Through its charitable investments, their mission is to support the growth and vitality of our communities. One of the largest utility-endowed foundations in the United States, the Foundation has awarded a total of $58.5 million to nonprofit organizations since 1988. Last year the Foundation awarded over $1.2 million to local nonprofit organizations and in the past decade has given the University of Utah nearly $1 million in contributions. For over a decade, Rocky Mountain Power Foundation has awarded at least five scholarships annually through the David Eccles School of Business’ Opportunity Scholars Program, a program serving students from socio-economically challenged backgrounds. Regional District Manager Alene Bentley has served on the Opportunity Scholars Board for nearly a decade. The Foundation has been an invaluable part of this program through their generous scholarship contributions, helping more than 50 students attain their dream of a college education.
Individual Donor Francis Armstrong Madsen Family The Francis Armstrong Madsen Endowment was created in 1987 with a $1 million gift from the family of Francis A. Madsen. At the time, this was the largest gift ever received by the school. The gift was made by Francis’s widow, Louise Wallace Madsen, and their five children: Richard H. Madsen, Francis A. Madsen, Jr., Robert A. Madsen, Peter William Madsen, and Mary Louise Madsen Rawlings. All of the Madsen children are graduates of the University of Utah. Francis Madsen graduated from the University of Utah in 1928, where he played football and was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity and the Alpha Kappa Psi business fraternity. A prominent businessman in Ogden and Salt Lake City, he established Sterling Furniture in 1928. He later merged this company with the original Madsen Furniture Co., which was founded in 1875 by his great-grandparents.
