History

The annual Spencer Fox Eccles Convocation, now in its 34th year, launches the academic year at the David Eccles School of Business. It salutes Mr. Spencer Fox Eccles (BS ‘56 Banking & Finance) for his decades of unparalleled commitment to his alma mater and his vital role in working with his aunt Emma Eccles Jones to establish a $15 million endowment to benefit the University’s business school.

Spencer F. Eccles, chairman emeritus of the Intermountain Banking Region of Wells Fargo, holds a bachelor’s degree in Banking & Finance from the University of Utah and a master’s degree from Columbia’s Graduate School of Business. For nearly two decades as chairman & CEO of First Security Corp. (1982-2000), he carried on the Eccles’ leadership of the nation’s oldest operating multi-state bank holding company, a distinction it still held at the time of its 2000 merger with Wells Fargo. As chairman & CEO of the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation and a board member of five other Eccles family foundations, he is also one of the most active leaders in Utah’s philanthropic community.

Spencer Fox Eccles’ contagious enthusiasm and campuswide support for the University of Utah are legendary. He is a member and former chair of the U’s National Advisory Council and serves on the Eccles School Advisory Board as well as many other state and national banking and civic boards.
