A NOTE FROM OUR ASSISTANT DEAN
“A global pandemic instantly changed everything about the way in which we work, the way we view our work, and the way in which we manage our lives. Despite these changes, I’m proud to say that the BCS team, our students, and our employer and community partners refused to be reduced. In fact, we chose to thrive.”
Maya Angelou once said, “I can be changed by what’s happened to me. But I refuse to be reduced by it.” As the 2021-2022 academic year draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on all the changes we’ve experienced in the last two years. A global pandemic instantly changed everything about the way in which we work, the way we view our work, and the way in which we manage our lives. Despite these changes, I’m proud to say that the Business Career Services (BCS) team, our students, and our employer and community partners refused to be reduced. In fact, we chose to thrive. With appreciation and gratitude, I say, “Thank you.” The BCS team remains committed to our goals and primary mission. Our success shows in the numbers, data, and anecdotes which you will see in the pages to come. As a team, we would like to acknowledge our many colleagues and partners within the David Eccles School of Business, the greater University community, and our employer partners. We know that no single department or individual can do it alone. As we enter the 2022-2023 academic year, we are under new leadership. Welcome Dean Rachel Hayes! With Rachel’s leadership in the business school and President Taylor Randall presiding over the University, the best is yet to come. Yes, changes abound. We are not reduced. Instead, we are escalating to new heights! Stay strong and be safe. Katie Abby, Assistant Dean Business Career Services 2
OUR UNIQUE APPROACH EARNS RESULTS
What makes Business Career Services (BCS) at the David Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah so effective at serving students from nine undergraduate majors and six specialized master's programs — while meeting the recruiting needs of companies large and small, near and far? Our unique approach couples the efforts of two teams: expert coaches who focus on preparing students to select and prepare for career options and a professional corporate outreach team that assesses employer opportunities and connects those companies with the best-matched students time after time.

CAREER COACHING
RIGHT STUDENT, RIGHT JOB
CORPORATE OUTREACH
Whether you're a current student, a member of the alumni community with positions to share or new horizons to seek for yourself, or an employer vying for top talent in an ultra-competitive marketplace, Business Career Services has the tools and people to magnify your abilities and get you the results you want.
CAREER COACHING Informed decisions don't happen in a vacuum! Students benefit from career-boosting strategies that come from a coach's experience and know-how in today's rapidly changing work environment. Career coaches work with a defined portfolio of students, allowing them to give personalized and specific advice that helps students clearly define their value propositions and craft their personal stories — all to land that dream job. Along the way, they educate on options, explore paths and positions, review resumes, practice interview skills, and teach negotiation techniques. For Eccles School students, that's a lot of career firepower in your corner!
CAREER EXPLORATION IN THE CLASSROOM A newly created, one-credit course introduces freshmen and transfer students to career exploration techniques and sets them up to succeed in scoring experiential learning opportunities and beyond.
• Students are introduced to a model of self-discovery, including CliftonStrengths™, as well as exploration of the world-of-work relating to majors and industries, target locations, jobs and companies.
In 2020-2021, 1,300 students completed BCOR 1010 – Career Exploration taught by Business Career Services staff under the leadership of Dana Sowby, BCS Director of Student Education.
• Modules highlight decision-making skills and implementing a career plan and job search, while instructors focus on experiential learning opportunities in and outside the classroom. Students get the chance to network with alumni and employer contacts right from the start.
WE START ON DAY ONE. Business Career Services connects with students throughout their academic career — starting in their freshman year. Career coaches help students find their passion, develop a personalized career development plan, and assist them to clinch summer internships.
• Confidence grows as students exit the course with communications strategies and skills, a solid resume to leverage opportunities, and a personal career development plan to implement at while at the Eccles School – giving them a jump start to planning their academic and career journeys to after-graduation success.

CORPORATE OUTREACH Thriving companies offer exciting career opportunities. An extension of each employer’s recruiting arm, Corporate Outreach maximizes options to help our partners build the people teams that will propel them forward. Collaborating with companies from those along the Wasatch Front, businesses across the state of Utah, national corporations with footprints locally to cross-country, and international organizations seeking talent with top business skills, we work together to build brand awareness among students and build an applicant pipeline that pays off.
Scholars allow consulting students to tackle company challenges with a fresh eye and data-driven responses. Specialized Club Events — Introductions to student clubs, panels on sustainability and healthcare, connections with affinity groups such as ALPFA (Association of Latino Professionals For America), Out for Business (LGBTQ+ allies), AAPI-SIB (Asian American Pacific Islander Students in Business), and other skill- and major-focused groups, to create mutually beneficial relationships.
To fuel interest, employers post on the Handshake job platform, while BCS actively markets full-time career positions and internships through Instagram, LinkedIn, TV screens in the business buildings, newsletters, and faculty support. We connect recruiters, hiring managers, and alumni with the support they need to thrive, with periodic employer forums, expert-led workshops on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, and up-to-date information on hiring and compensation trends.

HISTORY 2020-2021: THE VIRTUAL PIVOT During the pandemic, Business Career Services moved rapidly to virtual solutions, embracing alternate methods of connecting students and employers. We hosted virtual career fairs, info sessions, and meetings with student clubs remotely, beefed up our web presence, and amplified our social media and newsletter messaging. The student originated and
produced “Hey U” podcast continued unabated, while the Eccles School supported Hope Corps, teams of interns who provided needed marketing solutions at no cost to local businesses whose plans were abruptly altered by the interruption of in-person services.
HEY U The Hey U podcast, made by students, for students, features interviews with employers and leaders to get the inside scoop on all things business — everything from landing a job to navigating your career path. Listen at Eccles.link/Hey U.
