BUSINESS CAREER SERVICES
ANNUAL REPORT
LETTER TO OUR STAKEHOLDERS AND PARTNERS
The 2019-2020 academic year was filled with events none of us could have predicted. Culminating with a global pandemic, Business Career Services faced an enormous challenge to fulfill its annual mission of strong placement between students and employer/community partners. Prior to 2020, the economy in Utah was thriving. With unemployment rates averaging 3% or less, many of our students were entertaining multiple offers for full time jobs and internships. Our team felt confident that all placement goals would be met or exceeded. All of this changed in an instant. Literally overnight. Despite having to modify everything about the way in which we work, Business Career Services remained fully committed to hitting our goals. Within the pages of this report, you will find amazing success stories. I am pleased to report that our students’ salaries continue to rise and our placement percentages mirror those of past years with much stronger economic conditions. It is said that within every crisis lies opportunity. That is certainly true for Business Career Services. The team found an opportunity to step up in a way many believed to be impossible. I am so fortunate to work with individuals willing to roll up their sleeves and do the heavy lifting necessary to produce strong results in the most challenging of times. My heartfelt gratitude for everyone in the David Eccles School of Business: students, faculty and staff. It continues to be an honor to work with you, and I find inspiration on campus daily‌even virtually.
Stay safe and be well, Katie Abby, Assistant Dean Business Career Services

CAREER COACHING Starting in January 2020, Business Career Services began distributing a satisfaction survey following each individual appointment. This decision was made by the management team to get a better sense of student sentiment. By the end of the May 2020, our office had 597 responses with a 95% positive
satisfaction rating. For every dissatisfied student, our management team made a conscious effort to close the loop and reach out to these people individually. Of the feedback we received, our office was able to make improvements to our internal processes to ensure that students have a positive experience.

STUDENT TESTIMONIALS “I felt like I was listened to. When someone genuinely cares, this makes a big difference! Also, all of my questions were answered, I was treated respectfully and I was given additional suggestions and helpful advice to help me even more. I was extremely satisfied and grateful for this appointment."
“Marcella has been wonderful to work with! She has provided great advice and direction. She even follows up to ensure things are going smoothly. I'm very grateful to have Marcella as my career coach!”
“Suzy is the most valuable employee at the U, in my opinion. She has helped me exponentially and comes to meetings so prepared and ready to add value. Honestly, Suzy inspires me, gives me good feedback, tells me when I am not looking at a problem the right way, etc.”

BCOR 1010: CAREER EXPLORATION David Eccles School of Business made a huge leap forward this year in enhancing our career planning culture – all incoming undergraduates now have a mandatory career class. Our inaugural year of BCOR 1010 included 864 students. In one semester, they went through the self-discovery, exploration, decision making, and implementation cycle. From completing CliftonStrengths™ to recognize and maximize their natural talents to connecting with nearly 70 alumni and employers to network and explore the different career paths. Students also received an early introduction to resumes, LinkedIn, and interview practice, as well as creating their own 4-year Career Development Plan. We anticipate they will have a more targeted approach, added confidence, and ideally, greater job satisfaction and income potential as graduates on their career journey!
EMPLOYERS Our Corporate Outreach division builds partnerships with employers from Utah, across the nation, and worldwide to provide Eccles School students a myriad of career options. Acting as an extension of company recruitment teams, it provides creative approaches to matching student talent to workplace needs, offers expert advice on employment trends, and works to build awareness of brands, jobs, and internships. Among the many activities, we host networking and hiring events, sponsor speaking engagements and panels, arrange workplace visits, coordinate classroom and individual projects for businesses, and create digital and on-campus marketing to keep students informed about opportunities.
