DIS TINGUIS HE D SCHOL ARSHI P DONORS Val A. & Edith D. Green Foundation Allegiance to country, devotion to family, and commitment to community are the values that guided Val and Edith Green, who believed that true wealth is measured by the spirit of generosity. Born in his family’s home in Layton, Utah, Val Allen Green was the only child of Parley and Laura Green. He graduated early from high school and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He served in Germany and France before coming back to Utah to earn a degree in music theory at the University of Utah. After graduation, he rejoined the Air Force and was stationed in Louisiana, where he met Edith Derrick. Edith was born in Delhi, Louisiana, and moved to Arkansas, where she earned a degree from Henderson State University. Edith returned to Louisiana to teach middle school English when she was set up on a blind date with Val. The couple married in 1955 and had two children. Val took an opportunity to work in sales and marketing with the Coca-Cola Company and moved his family to Portland, Oregon. He had a very successful career with Coca-Cola, where he coordinated the company’s advertising and promotions for 14 states. He retired early in the mid-80s due to progressive macular degeneration, and he and Edith moved back to the Green family home in Layton. Guided by their values, Val and Edith established the Val A. and Edith D. Green Foundation in 1994 to support the people of Utah and the causes they care about. Val and Edith have passed those values on to their children, Val and his wife Elizabeth, and Holly and her husband Rodney, as well as their grandchildren Brody, Aaron, and Matthew. Since 2006, the foundation has awarded more than $4.5 million dollars to a variety of health care, education, medical research, and community organizations in the state of Utah. In appreciation of Val A. Green’s successful marketing career, the Green family established the Val A. and Edith D. Green Family Foundation Endowed Marketing Scholarship in 2000. In 2016, the Green family established the Val A. and Edith D. Green Foundation Endowed Scholarship in support of students in the Business Scholars Program. These scholarships honor bright, hardworking, and ambitious undergraduate students at the David Eccles School of Business.
