TALKING WITH ECCO’S TREND MANAGER

STINE KOEFOED STADUM ECCO Trend Manager Tell us about your job at ECCO. As Trend Manager, I help find that place where our design ideas and inspirations meet upcoming trends in fashion. I focus principally on key areas of design, including seasonal silhouettes, colors and materials. I also take into account what’s happening in the world of fashion, as well as people’s moods and the times we live in. For example, this winter we have been working with deep reds, burnt oranges and dusty blues as new color directions. New materials are the very two-toned material that has a vintage character. All this reflects both our designers’ inspirations for the season, as well as our understanding of the way people’s moods and desires are influencing the overall world of fashion. Uniting this fashion sense with our Scandinavian design sense is precisely what lets ECCO create timeless, minimalist shoes that also fit in with the latest movements in style. How did you get into this line of work? I am trained as an Industrial Designer and I’ve actually had two positions designing shoes myself. I have always been passionate about lifestyle and fashion. I am curious about every aspect of the industry and the culture. This job lets me put together all my interests.

DESIGN NEVER SLEEPS

If you were talking to someone who had never heard of ECCO before, how would you describe the kinds of shoes that ECCO makes? I would say ECCO applies Scandinavian design principles to shoemaking, creating shoes with timeless design and exceptional comfort. And of course, to expect outstanding quality. We are the only major shoemaker to own our own tanneries and factories – and it makes a difference. What are three or four words that you think describe ECCO’s approach to style? Timeless. Less is more. Scandinavian. Modern.

DESIGN NEVER SLEEPS

Here is one of my favorite shoes from the Autumn/Winter 2013 collection. It’s a classic mid-cut boot that is versatile, perfect for every day. Formal shape but great casual look. Oiled camel suede leather gives it a nice vintage feel. This season, we have focused on infusing the collection with subtle but attractive color pops and this ECCO Biarritz perfectly represents this trend. Revisiting classic styles and adding unexpected twists is something we love to do in the men’s design team.

MARK RÖDEL Head of ECCO Leather, Brand and Design Can you tell us about your journey to your current position at ECCO? I have always worked in shoemaking. Then in September 2012, I joined the ECCO Leather team as Head of ECCO Leather, Brand and Design. Can you describe the range of leathers used in the Men’s Formal Collection? The leather itself is where our creative process begins. As a result, our approach is extremely creative, innovative and deeply attuned to the natural qualities inherent in the material. WELCOME TO WINTER IN COPENHAGEN

WELCOME TO WINTER IN

COPENHAGEN The theme of our shoot is winter life in the city close to our headquarters and our hearts. We want to give you a sense of how families live in this vibrant and creative place. Here, the coldest months are an opportunity to spend relaxed time with family, while also getting outside to enjoy the beauty and atmosphere of the city. So we ventured out to our favorite streets and parks. We played in the snow. And we were invited to spend time with our friends, the Merolli family.

WINTER AND THE MERMAID Most people today know “The Little Mermaid” as a Walt Disney film, but it began as a story by Hans Christian Andersen, the legendary Danish writer of fairy tales. The statue of The Little Mermaid resides on a large rock near Copenhagen’s Langelinie promenade, where she gazes longingly out to the sea. In the middle of winter she is especially lovely, so we paid her a visit and stayed to photograph our outdoor shoes and boots.

Giuliano Merolli is part of our ECCO production team. He and his wife Sophie run Agentur ApS, an agency representing fashion stylists, hair stylists and make-up artists around the world. They have two sons, Romeo, 6, and Theodore, 1½. They enjoy a life that balances the glamour of fashion photography with the down-to-earth pleasures of being a family.

IT’S A SMALL WORLD AFTER ALL

At ECCO, we believe the shoe must follow the foot. We also believe in giving kids space to be kids — to be playful, active and spontaneous. And we design our shoes accordingly. Every kids’ shoe we make is prepared to get physical. To be athletic and comfortable. To keep feet cool and dry when they are inside, warm and dry when they are outside. So no matter what kids are doing, playing soccer, skipping rope, bicycling, or just running across the school playground, their shoes are helping them stay ‘in the game’.

Niels Hancke has worked with ECCO on many photo shoots. His company, Productionhotel.com Aps, helps filmmaking and photography crews (including our own) find hotels for their shoots around the world.
