The Actor’s Actor No one could ever accuse Gary Oldman of being typecast. In 1987, film critic Roger Ebert described him as “the best young British actor around” and even now twenty plus years on he retains the crown of one of the actors of his generation. It isn’t just the critics who recognise the ability of Oldman, he is cited as an influence by many successful actors including Brad Pitt, Tom Hardy and Daniel Radcliffe. Conversely, however, although he has won and been nominated for multiple awards, he has been described as one of the greatest actors never nominated for an Academy Award. Aside from acting, he has served as a producer on several films, and directed, wrote and co-produced “Nil by Mouth” a film partially based on his own childhood, for which he was nominated for the 1997 Palme d’Or and won two BAFTA Awards. What sets Oldman apart is an edgy intensity that brings to life his portrayals of dark, ambiguous and obsessive personalities, often in villainous and unlikeable roles. His chameleon-like ability has meant that you forget Oldman the actor and become immersed in his character. His initial foray into the public’s consciousness came in the 1986 role of wayward Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious in “Sid and Nancy”. Following this, acclaimed roles as playwright Joe Orton in “Prick Up Your Ears” and a slick lawyer in “Criminal Law” cemented his reputation. The son of a welder and a housewife, Leonard Gary Oldman was born in 1958 in New Cross, London. Oldman has a sister – also an actress, Laila Morse – who’s most famous for her role as Mo Harris in Eastenders. As a student he was unremarkable, dropping out of school at 16 and finding a job as a store clerk. He only realised his vocation as a performer when he became a member of the Young People’s theatre in Greenwich. Although an 7
accomplished singer and pianist as a child, he gave up music to pursue acting. His inspiration being Malcolm McDowell’s performance in 1970 film “The Raging Moon”. However, Oldman has not given up music and can be seen singing and playing piano in the 1988 film “Track 29”, and tracing over pre-recorded versions of Beethoven’s music in “Immortal Beloved”. His direction was set when he won a scholarship to study a degree in theatre arts at the Rose Bruford College of Speech and Drama in Kent. Following his graduation, Oldman’s hard work and versatility meant he was kept in work in Glasgow in the mid 1980s, culminating in the lead role in the stage production of Edward Bond’s socially-conscious drama, “The Pope’s Wedding”. This received critical acclaim, earning him two of the British stage’s top honors: the Time Out’s Fringe Award for Best Newcomer of 1985-86 and the British Theatre Association’s Drama Magazine Award as Best Actor of 1985. He moved into television in the mid-to-late 1980s with his presence and ability present for all to see in one of his first screen performances as an explosive skinhead in director Mike Leigh’s telefilm “Meantime” (BBC, 1983). His uncanny ability for mimicry has ensured that he was able to take roles in Hollywood productions after mastering regional American accents 8
flawlessly. Oldman has played a plethora of characters from the dreadlocked drug dealer in “True Romance”, Ludwig von Beethoven in “Immortal Beloved”, a terrorist leader in “Air Force One” and disguised beyond recognition as the disfigured Mason Verger in “Hannibal”. More recently, he played the role of Sirius Black in several of the Harry Potter films, the role of George Smiley in the re-adaptation of ‘Soldier, sailor, tinker, spy’ and he has reprised the role of Lieutenant Gordon in three of the Batman films. Allmovie has described Oldman as “capable of portraying almost any type of character” and Anthony Hopkins, has described Oldman as “multi-talented”, and possessing “a great genius and flair for creativity”. An intensely private character, Oldman actively avoids the Hollywood celebrity scene. However, this hasn’t affected his success. As of 15 September 2011, motion pictures starring Oldman as leading actor or supporting co-star have grossed over $8.4 billion worldwide. Not a bad result for the ultimate actor’s actor.

As a perfect wheel/tyre combination, MANSORY adds forged rims with central locking system, and adding Michelin PS2 tyres 245/35 ZR20 and 305/30 ZR21, front and rear respectively.
The eye-catching Siracusa front section creates a striking apron with its optimised air inlets for better ventilation of the front radiators. In combination with the new bonnet, MANSORY generates additional downforce whilst creating an aggressive look. Newly designed side skirts are added to the wings, which steady the air flow between the axles and supply additional cooling air to the engine compartment through integrated ducts. The diffuser - fitted into the new rear spoiler, stabilises the rear during high speeds and alongside the rear spoiler, generates contact pressure at the rear axle. The body kit is completed with carbon blades that replace the rear window. Compared with the production series Ferrari 458 Italia, MANSORY uses carbon components - reducing the vehicle’s weight by approximately 70 kg. This ultra-light and high-strength material is already found in many applications of the production series Ferrari. MANSORY continues to apply this line by making carbon the main material of all body components. Each single aerodynamic design element of the surface is manufactured to fit perfectly. The interior also benefits from the MANSORY customisation. The MANSORY upholstery department combines the finest leather with Alcantara and exposed carbon. Master craftsmen apply their skills using leather that is extremely durable, yet exceptionally soft. This special grain and the perfect decorative stitching, convey a stylish elegance to the newly designed centre console. Another highlight is the redesigned sports steering wheel and the aluminium pedal system.
The chassis components are adjusted to the dynamic driving behaviour. Four sports shock absorbers combined with progressively wound lowering springs reduce the vehicle’s centre point of gravity by 20mm more than the production series model. As a result of an optimised engine management system, a sports air filter, and a sports exhaust system, not only is the engine performance increased, but also the car’s acceleration. Thus, the 8-cylinder engine generates 590 HP/434 kW and a torque of 560 Nm, accelerating the car in breathtaking 3.2 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h. The top speed is 330 km/h, also higher than the basic Ferrari model.

BRABUS high performance meets high-tech multimedia: The “iBusiness” represents the debut of a unique luxury sedan. The four-seater based on the Mercedes S 600 reaches a top speed of 211 mph and a peak torque of 1,350 Nm (995 lb-ft). This engine combines with an innovative multimedia system featuring the latest Apple components including two iPads that also control all functions of the S-Class COMAND system, providing state-of-the-art entertainment and communication technology on wheels, the centrepiece of which is an ultra-small Mac Mini computer. A 15.2-inch TFT display is integrated into the headliner and with the standard screens serves as the multimedia system’s display. USB 2.0 ports allow you to connect various peripherals to the Internet-enabled Mac. A special BRABUS app will be available shortly for iPad / iPhone. Music comes from a 64GB Apple iPod touch storing over 14,000 songs. The sound is reproduced either by the sound system or by Sennheiser Noise Gard headphones.
On the outside, the BRABUS “iBusiness” has a striking front fascia whose shape reduces lift on the front axle. Integrated auxiliary headlights and LED daytime running lights increase the safety factor. Custom-tailored aluminum sport fenders give the S-Class sedan a more extravagant look. The design includes shaped sill skirts featuring integrated entrance lights for added utility. They are activated by the keyless remote or by pulling on a door handle. The aerodynamic-enhancement concept is rounded out by the rear spoiler lip and the new rear fascia with centrally located reflector and custom cutouts for the quad sport exhaust system. The underside of the rear fascia also features integrated LED lights. The performance is controlled with custom-tailored solutions for tyres, brakes and suspension – offering sporty and agile handling and excellent ride comfort. Power-operated curtains provide privacy for the rear passengers and a colour-changing interior lighting system creates a serene atmosphere. Taking the Long View The design of contemporary homes has elevated the kitchen from narrow workroom to centre stage in open-plan living spaces. Many new homes have also been designed to take advantage of their settings; living spaces have been opened up with walls of glass looking out over water, countryside and gardens. It’s an exciting lifestyle change in the home; these are fabulous spaces in which to relax and entertain. But how do the practical demands of a kitchen work within a space that features a wall of floor to ceiling windows or glass doors folding back to open up the living space to the garden? 48
How to achieve the drama of a view from the kitchen sink; Pippa Frost talks to Stewart Carr
Stewart Carr of bulthaup-Winchester assures, “Always consider the view; don’t compromise and put the sink against a wall so that your back is to the view. “I always suggest positioning sinks and hobs within island units either facing or at right angles to the windows so that you, too, can enjoy the spectacular views as well as chatting to family and guests while preparing food.” However, neither do you want the view from your living area cluttered by the paraphernalia of an obvious kitchen. Stewart continues, “Choose a kitchen that’s minimal and architectural so that it ‘disappears’ rather than distracts from the view.
“A bulthaup kitchen is so quiet it’s unobtrusive. Simple, smooth, linear cupboards with handle-less doors can conceal larders and fridge-freezers, and sinks and hobs can be fitted flush to the worksurface.” bulthaup is described as architecture for living spaces. These are minimalist, precision-engineered, yet beautifully crafted kitchens that are timeless and almost appear to float. It is these qualities that make them ideal for a light-filled living space where the kitchen partly frames the view. Stewart continues, “Always use quality finishes such as walnut, oak, glass and dark aluminium to ensure that the kitchen complements the style and quality of the rest of the furniture in the living space, and so that the dining, living and kitchen areas all flow together.” Each property and every view requires a different response. Some local homes illustrate the importance of this. Stewart suggested the use of two low island units to maximise the stunning river views from a living space with full height windows on two adjacent walls. One unit incorporates the sink and equipment for food preparation, while the other includes the hob and oven.

Carried with style Although unadorned by any logo, the Birkin bag is one of the most recognised bags worldwide, coveted and feted in equal measure by both the fashion industry and public alike.

At one point, the bag was so highly prized, it was reputed to have a waiting list of up to 6 years – the longest for any bag in history. This demand has meant that the Birkin bag has a high reselling value in many countries especially Asia.
The bag has a lock and keys. The keys are enclosed in a leather lanyard known as a clochette, carried by looping through a handle. The bag is locked by closing the top flaps over buckle loops, wrapping the buckle straps, or closing the lock on the front hardware. Locks and keys are number-coded.
The Birkin bag is handmade by Hermès and named after the actress and singer Jane Birkin. Its prices range from $9,000 to $150,000 dependent on the type of materials used in its construction. The bags are distributed to Hermès boutiques in limited quantities, creating scarcity and of course exclusivity. As legend would have it, the Birkin bag was created when in 1981, Hermès chief executive Jean-Louis Dumas was seated next to Jane Birkin on a flight from Paris to London. The contents of her bag fell to the ground from the overhead locker, leaving her to scramble around to pick them up. Birkin explained to Dumas that she had had to use a straw bag as she had not been able to find a leather weekend bag she liked. In 1984, he created a black supple leather bag for her, based on an 1892 design. Since then, the bag has carried her name and become a fashion icon. Each bag is made to order and clients can choose to customise their bag with different hides, colours, sizes and hardware fixtures. There are also 98

The bags are handmade in France by expert artisans and maintain the distinctive signature saddle stitching, developed in the 1800s. Each bag is hand-sewn, buffed, painted, and polished and takes several days to finish. Leathers are obtained from different tanners in France, resulting in varying smells and textures. The Birkin more than justifies its price tag due to the meticulous craftsmanship that goes into each piece.

Crafted from the finest materials and manufactured in the UK to the highest possible specifications, there is no other snooker table that offers the professional tournament experience as closely. The table is immediately recognisable – the iconic silver design as seen in televised Ranking Tournaments all over the world until 2009. Modern, yet traditional, the table oozes quality and style. Since 1992, 8 different World Champions have been crowned on Riley tables, including greats of the game like Stephen Hendry, Ronnie O’Sullivan and John Higgins. Handmade by craftsmen in the UK, the Aristocrat Tournament Champion is constructed from specially selected mahoganies and hardwoods. This is a full size, 12ft tournament table and will be required to support around 1000kg of slate – painstaking care must be taken to ensure that all parts are crafted to exact tolerances and specification. Only the best Italian slate is used for the playing surface. Although the surface is supplied in 5 pieces for ease of installation, it is cut from a single piece of slate to ensure an exact match between sections and then laser honed to provide the smoothest surface possible. The table frames are designed with the unique Riley adjustable slate support brackets.
These ensure that the slate is properly balanced to the frame and that the weight of the table is evenly distributed – this is key to keeping the table level over time. The slate is covered with Strachan cloth, as specified for all professional tournaments and widely recognised as the best snooker cloth available today. Many players do not realise the effect that the quality of the cloth can have on their ability to impart side spin and screw on to the cue ball. When you use the very best, the result is a better playing experience and an ability to develop your game further than you would on a lesser table. The quality of the cushions will be a key factor in determining the professional’s opinion of the overall quality of a table. Poor cushion response can end a break just as quickly as a mis-cue. It is crucial that a consistent and predictable bounce is achieved. The best quality professional tournament rubber has to be used and it has to be cut to specifications laid down by the World Snooker Association – including the pocket openings. But more than that, the Tournament Champion is fitted with Riley galvanised steels for optimum response along the entire length of the cushion. Galvanised steel is a more rigid material than wood and professionals prefer the more consistent rebound that is achieved with this construction. The best wood, the best slate, the best cloth and the best cushions – none of this means anything if the table is incorrectly assembled and installed. At Riley they offer a full door-to-door concierge service. This means you place your order and they take care of the rest – wherever you are in the world. Their fitters have assembled the tables used in some of the greatest matches in professional snooker – they are used to creating a professional playing environment and will bring all of that experience to bear in every table they install. Riley take pride in
ensuring that the slate is levelled correctly and is installed square on the frame. It can take up to an hour to properly level a slate table and to make certain that the joints in the slate are flush and seamless – this part of the assembly is so fundamental to the eventual quality of the playing experience that their fitters will refuse to take short cuts – “nearly right is not really right.” They will not stop until the cloth is tight and even, and there are no distortions or imperfections on or under the surface – even if that means removing the cloth from the slate, re-cleaning and starting again. Cushions are fitted using Tournament templates as specified by the World Snooker Association and Riley fitters will carefully adjust these to make certain that the height of the cushion is at the optimum level – too low and balls can jump when rebounding; too high and balls can get stuck under the cushion. When they leave, the fitters will have created another masterpiece – solid, stylish and precision engineered. There is no substitute for a craftsman made and craftsman installed snooker table. For those wanting a more traditional feel to their games room, the standard Riley Aristocrat is available in a deep mahogany finish. Crafted and installed to the same standards as the Tournament Champion, the Aristocrat is also made in the UK and represents the top of the Riley snooker table range. It is not only available in the full size 12’ version, but can be purchased in 10’, 9’ and 8’ sizes to suit a variety of different room sizes. Simon Annand The skill of seeing beyond the skin and bone of a person, revealing the essence of their being takes a keen eye, the trust of the subject and an innate ability. Simon Annand’s work shows a world that is not normally seen and he is indebted to all the actors who have allowed him access into their private space before they go on stage to face an audience. From Cate Blanchett to David Tennant, his work takes its audience into a twilight world, inhabited by the few. His revealing shots strip away the theatrical veneer, providing a fascinating insight into the world of the theatre and the life and preparation of the actor.
For the last 25-years, Simon Annand has captured the stars of the theatre world, both in front of the curtain, and backstage. He has worked with many of the world’s leading theatre companies, including: The National Theatre, Royal Shakespeare Company, Glyndebourne, The Royal Court, Comedie Francaise, Odeon Theatre Paris, Moscow Arts Theatre, Theatre de Complicite and The Old Vic. Photography entered his life through a picture taken by a passing holiday-maker, when he was still a child. Annand gave the holiday-maker his father’s camera and he took a shot that marked a moment when the whole family were fully happy. The recording of this rare event for posterity, had a marked effect on him and led him to pursue a career behind the camera. 117
Twenty-two years later, whilst working in the bar at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, he chanced upon Griff Rhys-Jones giving a wonderful performance in Charley’s Aunt. His perfect comic timing and high energy kept the audience laughing and enthralled night after night. His pleasure in witnessing Rhys-Jones’ hold over the audience meant that he decided to take a photograph of him, without consent, from the lighting fly-tower. This became his first ever theatre production photograph. Annand then found the courage to ask Rhys-Jones if he could photograph him behind the scenes, just before he made his entrance, when he summoned the jolly bravado of the character. He then took this one step further, asking to photograph him again, this time one step removed from the stage. In the setting of his dressing room, Annand found him to be reflective, quiet and almost melancholy. The difference in energy fascinated Annand and these three images became the beginning of a book, ‘The Half’, which set out to explore an actor’s journey from the dressing room to the stage. ‘The Half’ is a term coined for the thirty to thirty-five minutes set aside to ensure the actor is fully ready and in place 5 minutes before the play begins. His intimate selection of photographs show a variety and depth, which captures the many different ways that actors choose to spend this sacrosanct half-hour before curtain-up.
