NMEA 0183 Interfaces The Actisense® product range has been designed to surpass NMEA 0183 specifications. As the technical complexity of reading NMEA 0183 data has increased, so too has our technical expertise. Actisense NMEA interfaces provide the intelligent interconnection technology that enables users to get the most out of their NMEA instruments and related on-board PCs or laptops. All Actisense NMEA products utilise advanced Opto-isolation circuitry that protects both the NMEA ‘talker’ device and the Actisense product itself. All Actisense NMEA products feature high quality screw connectors, angled to allow easy access to make wiring up simple and quick. Critically, our range of NMEA 0183 multiplexers elegantly overcome the major limitation of the NMEA 0183 system – that there can be only one ‘talker’ or information source on any NMEA 0183 data line.
www.actisense.com
What is ISO-Drive? The Actisense team have formulated unique ISO-Drive technology to ensure protected signal outputs. ISO-Drive provides a galvanically isolated output, making installation simple and free from ground loops. This substantially reduces the risk of damage and hazards in connected equipment. The ISO-Drive output is tolerant of all connection types (RS422, RS485 & RS232), making for easy installation of an NMEA 0183 data bus system. ISO-Drive outputs are separately isolated from each other and the input (listener) circuit and can ‘float’ safely up to 1500 volts D.C from system ground.

NDC-4 NMEA Multiplexer Flexible multiplexing, with preconfigured versions for Autoswitching or AIS operation. The Actisense NDC-4 and NDC-4-USB allow up to five Opto-isolated NMEA 0183 sources to be multiplexed into a single stream*. Two flexible ISO-Drive outputs allow two different downstream talker baud rates to be created, ensuring maximum system flexibility. The NDC-4 is flexible and powerful enough to be the heart of a simple system, or one of many Actisense products in a more complex system. It provides complete access to all NMEA 0183 data sources, configurable filters to remove unwanted data, as well as enabling an on-board PC to read and add to the combined data stream. Factory preconfigured versions enable the NDC-4 to be used out of the box for AIS operation (NDC-4-AIS) or as an Autoswitch (NDC-4-ASW). *Four inputs on the USB version, as the USB interface acts as the fifth channel, overriding the fifth OPTO input. Benefits • Multiplex up to five NMEA 0183 devices • Filter unwanted data • Five flexible versions available • Preconfigured versions for AIS and Autoswitch operation • USB kit converts an NDC-4 to an NDC-4-USB

NBF-2 NMEA Buffer The power to drive up to six NMEA devices, with the safety of total input and output isolation. The Actisense NBF-2 galvanically Opto-isolates and buffers NMEA 0183 data to drive multiple NMEA devices, such as chart plotters and radars. It is also ideal for safely interfacing an on-board PC to NMEA 0183 equipment on a vessel. Designed for use with all NMEA 0183 input and output types (RS422, RS485 and RS232), the NBF-2 produces an amplified copy on each of its isolated outputs. Galvanic isolation on the Opto-input and the ISO-Drive outputs ensure protection for both the source talker device and all listening devices. The NBF-2-GX, with seven glands offers the option to easily seal more connections. The Actisense NBF-2 and NBF-2-GX are invaluable in creating a safe and flexible NMEA data network. Benefits • AIS compatible • Protects connected devices • Simple installation • Seal more connections with the NBF-2-GX • Can be used to isolate between two PC systems

USG-1 USB to Serial Gateway Connect your boat’s data network to your PC with the safety of full electrical isolation. The Actisense USG-1 is the safest way to connect a boat’s data network to an on-board PC. It converts a USB port into a bi-directional serial port suitable for connecting to a marine standard NMEA 0183 data bus. The ISO-Drive output and Opto input provide full isolation, making installation simple and free from ground loops. The Opto input uses the Actisense isolation circuitry to protect any connected equipment from the most common system faults. The isolator can receive very low level differential signals that are often too small to be received by a PC serial port. The USG-1 overcomes all the problems of using a low-cost USB to RS232 cable from a computer store. It eliminates the risk of damage to the PC as it provides complete isolation. Benefits • Create a safe serial port connection to an NMEA 0183 system that may be on a different power circuit from the PC • Connect two PCs together that are on different power circuits • Provide a fully compliant NMEA 0183 port from a USB port • Receive low level differential signals that are too small to be received by a PC serial port • Free up PC serial/COM port for other uses

DST-2 Active DST Module Breathe new smart digital life into old or new transducers, with digital signal processing technology. The Actisense DST-2 Module is the perfect way to take analogue transducers into the digital age. When used with new or existing transducers fitted to a vessel, the DST-2 digitises depth, speed and temperature transducer signals into NMEA data to deliver best-in-class seabed tracking. When used with an existing installed transducer, the frequency of the DST-2 must match that of the transducer. Typical frequencies used by manufacturers are 150 kHz (common in the UK/EU) and 170 kHz & 200 kHz (more common in the USA). The module is ideal for operation with any NMEA 0183 compatible devices, such as chart plotters, radars or an on-board PC. In addition, it can be calibrated via a PC for various sensors and installations. Benefits • Digitises analogue signals into NMEA data • Use with any NMEA 0183 compatible device • Range of frequencies available • Flash upgradeable ‘future proof’ design • Can be calibrated • Trip data available with speed transducers • Designed to replace outdated stand-alone echo sounders • Generates the echo sounders ‘ping’

NMEA 2000ÂŽ INTERFACES & CONNECTIONS The introduction of the NMEA 2000 network system has brought with it many advantages such as lowering the overall cost of installing and configuring networks and the ability to share power and data on one cable.
Page 22
Actisense have developed a range of products to make the transition from NMEA 0183 to NMEA 2000 as smooth as possible. The Actisense Research and Development Team have created interfaces to enable NMEA 0183 devices to continue to be used with the new NMEA 2000 network. Actisense products can enable bi-directional transfer of NMEA 2000 data between a networked device and a PC, ensuring you get the most from your NMEA instruments. All Actisense NMEA products have Opto–isolated inputs and ISO-Drive technology outputs (special feature on page 4) making an Actisense product the safest choice available.

NMEA Reader The NMEA Reader PC software allows Actisense NGT-1 owners to view NMEA 2000 information directly from the NMEA 2000 network, helping users to easily identify potential problems. NMEA Reader is incredibly useful as it breaks down the unreadable binary NMEA 2000 messages into easy to read values. NMEA Reader is also very adept at displaying NMEA 0183 information, either through the Actisense USG-1 (see page12) or any other safe connection to a PC. This powerful diagnostic tool helps the user to understand and identify exactly which devices are active on the NMEA 2000 network, providing the details of each one.
Features Receives and displays NMEA 2000 messages Receives and displays NMEA 0183 sentences Provides detailed information on the currently selected message View multiple connections simultaneously Record log files of received data as EBL files for viewing with EBL Reader at a later date Access configuration options for both the NGT-1 and NGW-1 devices
EBL Reader The EBL Reader utility software allows any EBL log files recorded by NMEA Reader to be viewed. These recorded data files enable basic diagnostics and the analysis of NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183 network problems. This tool has been designed to make life easier for the installer and the log files can be viewed and analysed.
Features Displays log files saved by NMEA Reader of time-stamped NMEA 0183 sentences or NMEA 2000 messages Provides detailed information on currently selected message Displays text files of NMEA 0183 sentences
