Source of the Krka river and the Krka Cave

What to do?

The Krka river originates in a large and wide pocket valley near the settlement of Gradiček. Beside the Ljubljanica river, the Krka river is the most typical river collecting the water of numerous small rivers and creeks. It is the largest right tributary of the Sava river. The popular River of Love TV series was shot near the source of the river and in the settlement of Krka.

The Krka Cave opens up above the source of the Krka river, north of the village of Gradiček. It is a horizontal cave, from which underground water occasionally emerges after heavy rain. It is 220 metres long and 30 metres wide. The ceiling is formed by aligned thick rocks. A 30 metres long siphon lake is located at the end of the hall. • See the source of the Krka river and the Krka

Cave with a guide; • Find the Proteus or “Human Fish”; • Treat yourselves with a picnic basket by the source of the river; • Take the River of Love path; • Refresh yourselves by the dreamy Krka river; • Walk over the Bridge of Love.

Tufa barriers on the Krka river in the Loka Park

Of all the Slovenian rivers, the Krka river is renowned for its high carbonate content. Since Krka's flow is very slow, calcium carbonate is excreted from the water during particular conditions, creating an “armour” around plants. Tufa is the youngest rock and is also being used as construction material.

Relax and admire the beauty of the magnificent tufa waterfalls or row down river and over tufa waterfalls in a canoe or kayak.

Natural baths are located in the Loka Park. There is also a wooden pier, benches and a log cabin with a bar in the park. The park is also home to four waterfalls which descend over tufa barriers. What to do?

• Relax by tufa barriers in the Loka Park; • Have a refreshing drink or tasty pizza in the near pizzeria; • Organise a picnic in the Loka Park upon prior agreement; • Refresh yourselves in the Krka river; • Row down tufa barriers with kayaks.

Vantage points:

Obolno, Polževo, Pristava, Gradišče

The Obolno vantage point is the highest peak in the municipality, since half of Slovenia can be viewed from it. The hill could also be called an arch or a bend, since it differs from the rounded land of the Gorenjska region. Cycling and hiking trails go up and down to the vantage point, and the peak may also be reached by car.

You can dine at the Obolno Agritourism Farm.

Five hiking trails lead past the village of Pristava nad Stično (Lavrič trail, Roman trail, Virida trail, Badjur trail and the Comfortable and Homelike loop path), part of which may also be done by bike. In the area you can visit the church of Saint Lambert on Pristava, and the Partisan Lodge stand on the top of Pristava with two monuments situated in its vicinity; the first is dedicated to the memory of fallen soldiers, while the other was erected after Slovenia gained independence. Do not miss the orientation point on the top of Pristava.

4 farms joined on Pristava under the name Pristava Tourist Village, which offers visitors plenty of adventures in the embrace of an intact nature. You may reach the Polževo vantage point on the forest educational path Following the trail of the Višnja Gora Snail, which starts from Višnja Gora and continues on part of the Jurčič trail all the way up to the Church of the Holy Spirit on Polževo (630 m). The path is always ascending, but is not too steep. You may dine at the Polževo Inn. During the winter we recommend having fun on a ski slope near the inn. The location may be reached by car. Each year in September, the local association organises the “Krevs race” on the Kriško-Polževo plateau.

Gradišče above Stična and Šentvid with the

mountain hut “Lavričeva koča” is a characteristic place of interest in the vicinity of Ivančna Gorica and is very popular for daily recreation. The Church of Saint Nicholas lies on top. Each year, several events are being held on the hill, among which the most popular is the Festival of chainsaw sculptors. Nice views open up toward

Ivančna Gorica and a part of the mountains of the Dolenjska and Notranjska region.

Cvinger (Virsko mesto)

Virsko mesto or Cvinger lies on a low mountain range above Vir pri Stični, where the hamlet Vrh is situated with the Grofija Homestead. Its surface area is 21 hectares and is 800 metres long and 400 metres wide. The town is surrounded by a more than 2 kilometres long and up to 6 metres high wall.

It was settled and fortified at the end of the 8th century B.C. It was one of the largest community centres of the Iron Age in the Dolenjska region, where they buried their dead in tribal and family burial mounds. Around 125 burial mounds were found in the area, which become one with the countryside through the millennia. The academic Dr. Stane Gabrovec, who led excavations on behalf of the National Museum of Slovenia in the first half of the 20th century, made Cvinger a world-renowned site.
