"The best of people is those that bring the most benefit to the rest of mankind" – Prophet Muhammad PBUH In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Gracious.
UCSI School of Architecture and Built Environment (SABE) is getting better all the time, especially our Community Architecture Program. Take whatever measure you wish; our school is right up there with the best. The rapidly developing coronavirus crisis is dominating global headlines and altering life as we know it. This year is a bit challenging for us as we went through a lot during our journey. Students are rapidly adjusting to learning and socializing remotely. Students are rapidly adjusting to learning and socializing remotely. Many student are coping with feeling overwhelmed and frustrated as they adapt to the new normal. As classes moved online, causing anxiety for some has led to struggles with self-regulation, keeping up with content and feeling isolated from fellow students or others. The little things usually taken for granted are now appreciated. COVID-19 has transformed the student experience. It has forced students to self-reflect and appreciate strengths within themselves and others, and to develop an awareness of their social frailty.
1
We are justifiably proud of our students and its dedication to the community architecture despite all the challenges. Our precious students are a credit to themselves and their families in the way they conduct themselves, engaged with our community, with the spirit they bring to our school. We urge our students to continue to make the most of their talents, always do their best and to realize their full potential. What we sow now, we will harvest later. Sharing this knowledge and experience builds solidarity among students and emphasize their challenges to the global community as we all work towards Sustainable Development Goals.
Community events don’t have to translate into in-person events. As many have learned from navigating the coronavirus pandemic, virtual community events can be fulfilling and help keep people connected. This year, since everybody is in the same boat, our students making an effort into making these kinds of the accessible virtual community event. It is kind of exciting that the progress that’s being made won’t be unmade when the pandemic ends. With a virtual event, you can bring supporters and program participants together, wherever they are.
The extra and co-curricular activities provided in our Community Architecture Program give our students the skills needed to embrace these challenging times – to be innovative, creative, team players …. thinkers and also be part of the community. With exposure like this, we expect our students to be the leaders of tomorrow who will foster and develop the reputation which UCSI has earned through the years, as the best private University in Malaysia. Enjoy this journey and savour each event. We are, as always, humbled by the skills of our educators and the enthusiasm of youth.
Congratulations and thanks to the commitment of so many students and lecturers (Mr Amar and Ms Fateha especially), and hardworking students in this program. I am so honoured to have a good and efficient team for our Community Architecture. Special thanks and congratulations Ms President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer for being helpful and Once again I thank all our SABE’s lecturers for sustaining our school and making it such an enjoyable place to study and work - to our students, entire school staff and parents. In conclusion, we thank our friends and the businesses whose generous sponsorship enables us to print this magazine and run the project smoothly. Thanks go to every single student in this course, the committee, group leaders, respective lecturers from SABE and to all whom directly and indirectly contributed to this event.
"Thank you to all who have contributed to this great project,"

Welcome to the 3rd issue of Community Architecture Magazine! I'm so excited to start this new, amazing venture in my life and share with all of you over my experiences in Architecture field .To kick it off, this magazine was initiated as a compilation of students activities from Community Architecture in Diploma Programme, UCSI University. The objective of this magazine is none other than documenting our students works so that all can be shared, viewed and valued by our society, especially those in other Architecture schools. This is our special way to glorify our students for their resilience, experience, knowledge, and hard work as they continue to exceed every expectation that we set in their projects. Taking this into consideration, the selected theme for this year is “ISSHO” which brings the meaning of “together” in Japanese language. Grounding on the theme, we at Architecture Department, UCSI University anticipate students to work together in establishing network between them and our local community. We believe that this togetherness concept can be helpful to our students in recognizing their social responsibility, especially by incorporating their architectural knowledge and built environment. As a Praxis University, the network too could act as an important catalyst for forming a better community engagement in the future.
3
For this project, 98 students have collaborated with communities from 20 organizations and NGOs to promote the idea of green and sustainable development. Various informative events with a wide range of activities such as lectures, sharing sessions, and virtual games have been prepared and outlined for this year by our respective committee. Our students have shown tremendous efforts and did an excellent job in their works, thus we decided to include more inserts in this edition.
There's one more I should add here. Despite all the things that we have planned and succeed for this year, there are also unfavorable events. Due to Covid-19 outbreak in Malaysia, several projects were suspended, while the remainings are conducted virtually by the committee. We also know that our students were stressed in many aspects during this pandemic period and academic delays, but we’re so proud of them as they keep pushing themselves and lifting their friends during the difficult times. In the end, all projects that were held so far (in real-life or virtual) gained constant cooperation and participation from students. Well done, dear students!
Not only the students, I'm also privileged to have worked with most dedicated colleagues during this project. I would like to congratulate Ms. Syawallina and Mr Amar for doing a great job and putting up extra time and effort dealing with 98 students! Thank you.
To end this, a heartfelt gratitude also goes to all of us who have spent time and effort in making this magazine a success. We have done such an excellent job, and I truly hope that this magazine could help and inspire other people, especially our young architects and interior designers to keep contributing in community work and promoting a green and sustainable development in future. Looking forward to more projects! Till next time!

Assalammualaikum, (Peace be upon you). Alhamdulillah, thanks to God, who giving us the strength, knowledge, ability and opportunity to undertake this Community Architecture project. Without His blessing, this can’t be achieved easily.
'Berat Sama Dipikul, Ringan Sama Dijinjing' is a classic quote that can describe our situation now during this Covid-19 season where we as a human need to be together to take care of ourselves and others. Selfishness is not an option, togetherness comes naturally to our heart and society. Related to that, our Community Architecture project theme for this year is “ISSHO”, that has the meaning of togetherness, which is our main objective of this Community Architecture event. With the mixed of different semesters, different races, different religions, different ages and relationship between lecturers and students, this event is a unique event. We really respect and are proud of our team that have been set up to organise this event for 7 weeks during our short semester.
5
UCSI, School of Architecture and Built Environment (SABE) is always a good platform to help and engage with communities, especially with our Community Architecture Programme. We urge our students to continue making the most of their talents to do their best and to recognize their full potential. This is a lesson that is very hard to get anywhere else.
Congratulations and many thanks to the commitment given by all students, especially to the committee members, and lecturers, Ms. Syawallina and Ms Fatehah. I am so honoured to have a very good and efficient team for our Community Architecture project. I humbly would like to thank our Sponsorship Team that makes things run smoothly with the support from the sponsors. Thanks to the Publication and Media Team for undertaking one of the important tasks, producing our magazine. Big thanks to the Logistic Team for organizing transport, materials, and etc. Special thanks to the Event Team, Design Team, and not forget to our lovely President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and their assistant for making our event success and joyful.
In conclusion, with the spirit of “ISSHO”, we hope that our event will be the platform for people to still be together even in a limitation of new system and law because of Covid-19. Hope everyone gets the enjoyment of this event and becomes our best memory in the future. Cheers!

LIM PEI JING (President)
ISSHO is a word that derives from japanese, which means together. It also defines the work of all individuals at the same time and at the same place without differentiating race, region and background. We live as a community without any discrimination. It is my honour to be the president of ISSHO Community Architecture Projects. This magazine is important to provide wealth of information, inspiration, and creative ideas for readers. The magazine compiles all our projects for these 7 weeks. The Production project of this semester will be in various sites. The challenge of this project is to design innovative furniture for a community using recycled materials.
Recycling is one of the effective methods that reduces pollution caused by waste. Through this project, we hope that the students will know the importance of recycling and create the awareness of recycling to the public. Recycling is very important as waste has a huge negative impact on the natural environment. Harmful chemicals and greenhouse gases are released from rubbish in landfill sites.
“However difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at. It matters that you don't just give up”.

Sincerely congratulations to every committee and students of Community Architecture and also the lecturers who also contributed and assisted us through this whole semester and all the events that had been held. I look back from day one of this semester till its fruition, I would be delighted to say that it is not an assignment or task, it has been a great stage of bonding with everyone together, racing toward and fighting for the same goal. It is an honour to be selected as the president of Community Architecture. Thanks to all the students that are willing to give me a chance to be president.
I was not born to be a good leader but I will try my best to take full responsibilities for everything to play a good role in this position. My gratitude goes to those who gave their support and guidance to me throughout the project especially the committee and lecturers. Utmost thanks to all the lecturers for unwavering support and guidance for imparting your valuable skills and knowledge to us . Without the support and efforts from the committee and lecturers, this would not be accomplished. All of us have a pair of hands to help each other. We need to contribute what we have learnt to the community .
This project is new to all of us, we lack experience in planning events and construction knowledge. Each of us have to put a lot of effort and time into ensuring that we can meet the goals. Throughout the project, it was definitely tough and stressful dealing with COVID-19 and there is a lot of restriction yet all of us are still having a lot of fun.Through the process of preparation, hard work, facing and learning from failure.
I believe that our efforts, no matter how small, we still did well in our parts and contribute whatever we have towards the projects. Once again, I would like to thank all the sponsorship, committee and students that contributed to the project. We are truly grateful for your help along the way.

“ISSHO” means "Together" in Japanese. In Community Architecture 2020, students of different personality, races, we came from different states, even country being united to work together. It is tough for both students and lecturers to carry on projects during COVID-19. Due to this worldwide pandemic, we are not allowed to gather with huge number of people together, thus this drives us different from Community Architecture of previous years: we have different sites for the class, and literally everything must go ONLINE. However, we hope to deliver the message that although we are physically far apart from each other, but we are still working together as a team, having the same goal to achieve. I believe distance is not an issue for us being united.
Community Architecture project is a good platform for students to contribute back to the communities and society around us, encouraging the exchange of ideas, culture as well as cultivate the sense of interest and respect for different people groups in Malaysia. It also provides a valuable consciousness for students that architecture is way more than just design. This will help us to grow with a big heart and make us as responsible professionals in the future.
9
Recycling is the process of converting waste materials into new objects. Especially in society nowadays, people produce huge amounts of waste which causes greenhouse gases that harms our earth, so it is crucial for everyone to learn and take part in recycling. In conjunction to these, this semester we were assigned to design innovative furniture for a community using recycled materials. This will serve as an iconic feature and practical for the chosen site.
It was a great honour for being assigned as the vice president of community architecture 2020. Although I do have experiences of being a leader, it is the very first time for me and the president to lead the class with almost 100 students. However, I am very grateful to have a strong reliable committee team. Each department leader plays their role well in helping to push the impossible to possible. With the help of lecturers and all departments, things go smoothly even in the pandemic situations. We tried to work out solutions together hand in hand and yep, there are always more solutions than the problems we faced. I also believe that in every situation that we encounter, from hard skills to soft skills, we did learn something from that.
Finally, I truly appreciate everyone’s effort from every student to all lecturers. I would specifically thank Ms Echa, Ms Fatehah as well as Mr Amar. Thanks for your advice that guides us through the way. It wasn’t easy to handle the unexpected incidences and difficulties that were out of our plans, we couldn’t finish the projects given without your tolerance and enlightenment. Thanks for all students’ contribution and cooperation in every part of the project. We also present our gratitude to the sponsorships who support us financially. Each and everyone here is the reason that brings the projects to success.

This whole journey has been about coming together in adapting to the change forced upon us. Undoubtedly, the covid pandemic has affected every single person on this globe and our community architecture subject was no exception. This means that Community Architecture 2020 will inevitably be different from what was done before, and we have to find a way to instill meaning and purpose in the new Community Architecture. I think it’s safe to say that all of us have felt a little demotivated to press on with our project briefs. Nonetheless, our lecturers and students have all found a way to cope and to push through. It wasn’t a piece of cake but together, we held and lifted each other up.
For that, I’ll always be grateful to have been a part of our ISSHO Community Architecture 2020. We can remember this subject for all the negative things that were thrown our way or we can allow our circumstance to give us an opportunity to do something new and different. And together, we have done the latter. We have all come together hand in hand despite us being distanced and decided to put our best foot forward to do the best we can and to have as much fun as possible. We may be distanced but we are not distant.
11
This goes without saying but I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to lead a team to document every passing moment and checkpoints in ISSHO’s timeline. This magazine isn’t just pictures and ink on paper but is a culmination and amalgamation of our entire process and journey of ISSHO. I can’t thank my team enough because without each and every one of them this magazine wouldn’t have been possible. I am so grateful for my assistant editor, Ka Wei, for her hard work and contribution to the magazine that without it, our magazine would not be where it is today. I hope everyone who reads and goes through this magazine, will be able to journey with us. To live through what we went through and how we adjusted to the changes the pandemic has forced upon us. I hope you’re able to see that together, we truly and indeed are better.
And with that, I’m so glad to have had journeyed with all of you.

Our kin takes a liking to travelling in groups. We are social beings hence, we develop complex and different ways to communicate. Community Architecture makes us learn what we’re best at, taking advantage of our socializing abilities for Architecture. Our project brief is simple. We are to find any Non-profit organization for this assignment and design a bench designated for them. A bench that is environmental friendly, serves a purpose and function towards the organisation. This is a beautiful depiction of a community working collectively to give back to another community. The entire act is to allow everyone to develop team working skills. Originally, this assignment was to be done as a whole class; all 90+ of us visiting 1 organisation. However, due to the pandemic, we are all separated into groups of 5. Unfortunately, some weren't able to be physcially present at the site too.

In this project, there is a large variety of job scopes. Some of us negotiate with the founder of the site, some of us design and visualise the final product while some of us put our hands into work and forge the furniture. Lastly, the remaining members would document the entire process. It is unfortunate that we have to compromise from being one large colony of around 90 people to separate into smaller groups for this semester. Configured to fit the events of the pandemic and to keep ourselves safe, we have learned from working within a smaller tribe instead of one large group. Slowly but surely, all of us are finding the motivation and hope within ourselves to push through this semester. This subject is a gift to everybody who has been separated from the others, relearning again how to connect in a different way.

Given that the final product of our Community Architecture is a bench, thankfully, the Furniture Workshop subject is here to guide and aid us in what it takes to make a working furniture. The first assignment of Furniture Workshop taught us how to construct a simple yet functional design of a slot bench within a given dimension. The learning outcomes attained was basic designing and making of furniture with proper techniques using hand tools, power tools and woodworking machines. Our first step was to cut down the given wood planks into the given shape and dimensions. The second step is using tools such as chisels and rubber mallet hammer to remove the unwanted wooden planks. Finally, the wood planks are nailed and slotted to form a simple yet functional bench. Group 3A

With the skills and knowledge this subjected has gifted us we feel confident and motivated to conduct the final project for
Community Architecture. Smiles are adorned on each of
our faces along with our completed benches. It's safe to say that all members had fun and enjoyed this day at the makelab. It should be noted that this is one of the last few times our batch has come to the makelab before the implementation of CMCO. Upon receiving the unexpected news, apprehension and confusion filled our minds once again as we ponder the upcoming proceedings and outcomes of our project briefs from every subject. Fortunately, our lecturers wasted no time in dealing with the situation despite the news coming out of the blue. They assured us and amended our project briefs accordingly. However, feelings were mixed as we were forced to look forward to a future where we are back in our homes, in front of our computer screens. Nevertheless, our ISSHO community held and supported each other all the way through this sudden transition.

Community Architecture held its first class on 28th September 2020 and every subsequent Monday. The first class was a memorable one as it was the first time to be held physically after a number of virtual classes.
Initially, this semester's assignment 'The Production' would be held in various sites, conducted in 6 weeks together with a design workshop and virtual public engagement. All designs would be documented, built, and exhibited for public viewing to generate awareness on community architecture. Creativity of the students would be showcased in modifying recyclable materials.
Advancing with this plan, students proceeded to head to the site chosen for the project during Week 2. The task: to update the on-site group photo and design 'ISSHO' themed T-shirts. In addition, we had to produce a concept for our benches and a prototype model.

Unfortunately, due to the government’s announcement of the COVID-19 cases increasing, we had to stay home for the implementation of CMCO. Leading us back to online classes for an initial two weeks.
Since we were happy to have the final assignment of making the Gabion bench for the site and we are also looking forward to making the benches by ourselves, we were deeply sadden by the fact that we can no longer make the bench even though we were already preparing well to begin this task.
Following the events of the implementation of CMCO, our brief changed once again to adapt to the situation. A design proposal and video presentation was to be provided at the end of our project we can only provide the bench design proposal for our final assignment.
Thus, begins Week 3 Zoom class. And soon our 2 weeks of CMCO were up and extended for another 2 weeks again. Continuing our zoom classes. Before we knew it, this semester has already hit Week 6 and we had all gotten accustomed to doing things in front of our computer screens again. Of course, there were certain limitations such as not being able to meet physically as a whole group to work on certain aspects of the project however, that did not put a stop to the students designs, hard work and diligence in achieving the task at hand.

Description: The logo design uses line art to make the appearance look significant and straightforward. The waves and storms represent the hard times we go through in our lives especially the COVID-19 pandemic that is currently affecting us. The "ISSHO" boat signifies all of us in the same boat together. Emphasizing that collectively, we can fight through this global pandemic and steer the ship to a brighter place. This semester, all students were given the individual task to design our Community Architecture 2020_10 t-shirt. All of our students' designs showcased their creativity ,innovation and their own personal interpretation of the word 'ISSHO' and what the Architecture Community 2020_10 means to them. The students were then required to upload and submit their designs by a given deadline on padlet. After which each group was told to pick the best design within their groups. With the help of our committee members, the number of designs were narrowed down to the remaining top 3. This proceeded with an online voting session to choose the final design that can best represent us as ISSHO community. Once voting closed, Tan Jian Ting from publication team was announced as the designer of the shirt the majority of our batch liked. Its design is simple and minimalistic without being empty or void. It has all the necessary information of our project and represented us as a whole collectively. Thus, this design had been chosen as our official T-shirt.

As the saying goes, alone we can do so little, together we can do so much. In order to make our final event a great success, community architecture merchandise were sold. These included a minimalistic tote bag, monochromatic re-useable face mask, attractive and aesthetic badges. These merchandise were discussed and concluded by our committee members through meetings. In addition, the design department has spared no effort in designing these merchandise. Everyone in the design department has actively involved themselves in designing the snack’s packaging, pocket calendar and tote bag. The design of the merchandise is mostly finalized by the committee members in the design department or through online voting by the students.
Due to the pandemic on the rise again, our committee members have decided to overcome this situation by conducting the selling of merch through an online platform. In fact, the major reason for selling these merchandise is to promote ISSHO Community Architecture but at the same time raising funds for the bench project. However, in view of the pandemic period, the students are unable to build and construct the physical bench for the nongovernmental organization (NGO) that they chose to service. Therefore, the fund collected will be allocated for our final event Archi camp. For those who are interested in purchasing the merchandise or have any enquiries they can contact the person-incharge which has been shown in the post advertised on Instagram whereas for those who have made a decision to order the items, they'll be directed to the pre-order link.
“Coming together is a beginning, staying together is a progress, and working together is success.” This quote by Henry Ford has shown the current situation of us. Firstly, we've come together because of our Community Architecture class, then, we stayed for the discussion and planning of our event, and now, we work together to make all our efforts crowned with success.

14 NOV 2020 - 15 NOV 2020
2 D A Y O N L I N E E V E N T If there is a majestic way to end a semester like this, it would be an event. The equivalent of a spectacular firework show upon the sun-set if not better. 2 days of raw architecture fun, knowledge and experience. It’s aimed to unite outsiders and peers alike. Also it is aimed to be non-profit, making the commitments of us peers purely voluntary; by will, by kindness. Both days are packed with conventions, talks, activities and such. Almost as if there is something for everyone. The first day begins with an opening of Kahoot quizzes and icebreakers. Then we spend 20 minutes watching videos of selected bench designs. Progressing through is the event’s crux, two senior architect members would give a talk presenting the capabilities of sustainable architecture. After, an art competition. It is proposed that the theme would be abstract and fine art. One where the person does it himself and the other where members of the groups put their artwork together as pieces of a unique puzzle. A hint of recycling and sustainability should also be within the concept of the artworks.

Smaller unrelated icebreaker games and activities were spread out as the day progressed. Those were times where we cracked jokes, larked about and fathomed with each other.

Art, as one of the more beautiful things to look at, is an aspect to study in architecture. It brings meaning to our event to see what each and every student could work individually and in groups where they decide to share the same color palette while portraying different drawings.

As the ice-breaking sessions come to an end, the event has something prepared specially for us, two architects which we invited accepted to give a talk about sustainable and pandemic architecture. They showed what the world requires currently and what innovative methods have people come MR. LUCAS LOO ZE-XIAN

around to solutions to current problems. When the speakers gave speeches and talked about their past experiences and talked about innovative architecture, we were simply stunned by the only better intricate ways people brought up the table to ensure a better quality of survival for buildings. We were diligently interested in the topic, a flow of questions never seemed to stop. The methods were seemingly surprising and yet followed a procedure of logical outcomes and solutions.

Almost all students were deeply engrossed and interested in what they had to say as a stream of questions never stopped flowing. in community architecture. In the beginning, I thought the job was quite easy like collecting money from students and it was just like high school. But no, the job is more than the one I need to lead the fundraising and sponsorship team, and I feel super lucky to have a team who put in effort to help and

also people who keep helping me, Karif and Pei Jing, because I do not have any experience in all of these treasury stuff. "Firstly, it is an honour to be voted as the leader of the event team. I would like to thank all the committees and my assistant for being with me throughout the preparation especially during these hard times. As the leader of the event team, the most important aspect to me is to wish all the participants who took part in the virtual camp find every second of it interesting and are having fun with their fellow friends.I have learned that It is not easy to organize an interesting online event especially during the covid-19 pandemic. I now understand how such situations can be solved and our capabilities to adapt to the new environment. I believe that it was tough and stressful for all the committees and members in the past few weeks but I’m glad to see all of us are still having fun throughout the process of preparation and hard work. Once again, I would like to thank all the committees and students who contributed to the project and I hope to work again with everyone in the future,"

"Community Architecture this semester for sure was not what we expected nor were we prepared for. This pandemic has certainly changed our expectations and plans for this semester significantly. Surely, we had challenges due to all the SOP for the movement control order. We had to limit face to face meetings, making communication a bit inconvenient but we still worked through it. However, so many of the people in this class have managed to push through these obstacles, and that is great. Everyone has worked so hard to keep afloat in these difficult times, and those in charge have really been exemplary in surviving if not thriving in this pandemic.I truly appreciate this Derrick

"Community architecture is a subject that sounds like it’s fun. And it is fun. We get the opportunity to design a bench for the NGOs in our area, and it feels great to design a bench with some of my friends.Unfortunately, due to the pandemic and SOP reasons, our classes have to be online and it’s a problem to construct the bench that we had designed for the NGO that we’ve chosen. But we do manage to work this through with the help of our lecturers and classmates. It’s not easy, but I’m glad that we have found a solution for this subject. It’s definitely a good experience for Khar Hou

"Having the opportunity to lead the media team was a pleasure, but it has always been challenging for me. Having supportive team members has made it better. I can express myself creatively through visual editing of photos while getting out of my comfort zone and trying out things I have not tried before. Issho Community Architecture has always been about being together and going through hard times as a team. I am glad to say that the media department has made it to the end of the tunnel.
