PREPARATION
MERCHANDISE The cost for constructing gazebo was always an unknown since we do not have any single experience on construction. We did survey and query from few specialists, out of our expectation, the cost for it had exceeded our budget. This grievous issue had been brought up to the meeting as the sponsor we received is limited. Event Team had come out with few proposals for fundraising, succeed of that, merchandise selling was selected to be the main event for our fundraising.
MERCHANDISE
PREPARATION STAGE: Numerous meetings had been conducted within Event Team to discuss and decide on the making of merchandise. To be innovative and creative, subsequently to attract more buyers, laser-cutting products was proposed and accepted among Event Team. FINAL DESIGN AND PRODUCT FOR SALE: Days and nights of generating ideas, typology of products can be differentiate into few categories such as geometric beast series, abstract geometry series and Avengers assemble series. All of the items were using laser cutting technique and also laser engraving technique to enhance to design. Addition of that, materials for the products can be select between plywood and acrylic to have different sense of texture and aesthetic value. Moreover, we did offer a magnificent standing model – Millennium Falcon as our special product, hoping to attract buyers to contribute to our budget. After all design process and publicity process were said and done, marketing event was started and pre-order can be made started on 26th of October. We also provide customize service which allowing buyers to have their desire design. On 29th of October, a merchandise booth had been set in our campus to have a physical sale and also indirectly promote our project thus having their support.
THE SITE-TIKL
BACKGROUND OF TIKL SMTKL is a government-aid technical and cluster school located in Bandar Tun Razak, Cheras, Kuala Lumpur and it’s the oldest technical school in Malaysia that was founded in 1926.The establishment of TiKL can be traced back in 1926. In 1927, The Federated Malay State Government Trade School was created after the Federated Malay States government wished to train skilled workers in technical fields.
THE SITE - TIKL
SITE ANALYSIS Architectural site analysis, is the process of evaluating a particular locations physical, mental and social characteristics with the ambition of developing an architectural solution that will both address and enhance its internal and external context. "To develop a project of any merit, its site must first be measured" Every site is unique and will consist of many complex elements such as: varying topography, trees, plants, activities, and weather patterns to name a few. All of which will and should influence an architect’s design process and decision-making. The appropriate analysis of these elements will initially help determine the buildings(gazebo) placement, orientation, form and materiality, but then later go on to influence its structure, sustainability and procurement route. Site analysis was in the form of presentable diagrams which providing a very vital foundation and crucial starting point for any architectural project. These diagrams data are like pieces of puzzle,

Overcrowded
Gazebos especially near the hall is also used for students to do quick revisions during their exams month. Four gazebos cannot fit for hundreds of students at a time.
Some students requested for the gazebos to not have benches. Traditionally sitting on floor brings a sense of relaxation.
Students of TIKL has requested for a gazebo that allows more privacy space for the meeting session with families and friend.
During activities such as exams and meeting parent session, TIKL students feel too crowded in existing gazebos and requested for gazebos with more space.

A BREATHING GAZEBO
First prototype model (1:20 ) was done to study and proceed to next phase efficiently.
The “Eco Gazebo” was a project presented by Team A students from Ber:SAMA Community Architecture UCSI 2018. In regards to the name “Eco”, the main concept was eco-friendliness” since our intention was to rebuild the community by not causing any harm to the environment. Essentially, there were 3 main points behind the concept: reusing old materials as nonstructural elements, reducing the use of new materials while simultaneously being eco-friendly and economical, and incorporating green elements to enliven the gazebo. The idea of the concept was inspired by several projects by TYIN Tegnesture Architects. For instance, the Safe Haven Library and the Klong Toey Community Lantern. The core value of TYIN Architects focuses on the adaptation of situations, which can be globally implemented. Furthermore, their construction techniques were best suited for our project. Most of their construction materials utilized are non-structural, including bamboo and iron wood.
After the first class meeting on 1st Oct, the designated students carried out the first site visit to TIKL accountably on 3rd Oct in order to conduct site analysis according some issues like site location, zoning, sun orientation and etc.
DESIGN WORKSHOP On the 13th of October, each group was allocated to work together with students of Technical Institute Kuala Lumpur (TIKL) through the gazebo design process. Five TIKL students were picked to join each group . After an ice breaking session with the students, we interpreted our concept of the gazebo’s design and showed them its strengths. Apart from that, we had also undergone a discussion session, addressing the issues confronted by the students and the parents about the insufficiencies of the gazebo. To our surprise, the five students actively gave and shared suggestions for helping us solve technical difficulties we would face while building the gazebo. In general, the students of TIKL collaborated well with us to construct a model for the presentation task at hand. Using the model as visual aid, the presentation was held among the group leaders before the end of the workshop to mainly discuss the design’s exterior, interior and furniture. Through this workshop, we were able to learn and gain some technical knowledge from the students of TIKL, as well as our lecturers: Mr. Brandon and Ms. Echa. Additionally, the students got the opportunity to firsthandedly experience the architecture design process.
PREPARATION
It took approximately two weeks to finalize the design of our gazebo. Yoong Chian, Team A representative presented the design during a class presentation and received fairly good reactions. Moreover, useful feedback and suggestions from theclass were given.
Team A members kickstarted the project by developing and sharing innovative ideas. Ultimately, our core value was to serve the community to the best of our ability by rebuilding and reforming the incomplete. Acknowledging the requirements of the students and teachers of Sekolah Menengah Teknik Kuala Lumpur, we decided to build a gazebo of quality in terms of functionality and flexibility. Our intention was to build a space with functions extending beyond than just a shelter. Based on our site analysis, we concluded that the most suitable and appropriate place for our gazebo would be beside the school canteen. In keeping with the theme of the environment, hence the name “Eco Gazebo”, the primary concept was undoubtedly “environmental friendliness”. The main ideas behind the concept conveyed reuse, reduction and replenishment. The concept was inspired by the TYIN Architects, who produced astonishing public spaces using raw materials. Instead of damaging existing elements of the school, we tried to reform and give them a new life, just like the worn out gazebo beside the canteen. Relating to the idea of ecofriendliness, we managed to utilize recycled products as our construction materials such as a tetra pak roof, wood pallets and old tyres. As a matter of fact, using recycled materials helped us avoid additional expenses that our sponsors could otherwise cover. With the aid of the students from SM Teknik KL, we collaborated to improve the gazebo’s design and produced some sketches during the workshop. As a result, the product would not be a fancy, lavish gazebo but more so a cost-effective, ecofriendly one. Right before the construction commenced, we did several presentations for our lecturers to highlight potential arisen issues of the construction process. It would be relatively tough for us because of its time consumption. We made changes to our design due to some technical problems but we managed to overcome them in the end. For approval, some of us went to SM Teknik KL to present our ideas to the principal.
CONSTRUCTION
Site clearance on 22nd Oct and it is the site for the designing gazebo.
Firstly, a site clearance on our site with a 3m x 3m area was performed, excavating a depth of 15cm below ground level. Next, a contractor erected the wooden formwork. Holes for the installation of columns were dug out before adding the concrete foundation. Wood sticks were put across the wooden formwork to ensure the columns were placed at a 90 degree angle. To ensure maximum height and perpendicularity, a bubble leveler was also used. Then, reinforced steel bars were installed between the form faces. The form was later filled with poured reinforced concrete. After the concrete set, it was paved properly before the removal of the formwork. The concrete hardened after 3 days. The column was cut with an engravement of an L- shape at the end for the installation of beams. The beams achieved horizontality by again, using a bubble leveler.
The beams and columns were then joined by not only using brackets and nails but also with nuts and bolts. Rafters were installed before the roof using silicon screws; known for their waterproof properties, thus being rust resistant. Later, the sides and facade of the gazebo were built by using different sized plywood pieces and pallets. The sides of the gazebo were built in an anti-clockwise order; starting with right side, to the facade and finally ending the construction with left side of the gazebo. Flower pots were hung from the sides of the gazebo and placed inside for aesthetic purposes. Lastly, shellac finishing was applied for further beautification. Inside the gazebo, benches, a table and stools were placed. The benches were made using pallets sitting atop tires and joined using bolts , nuts and screws, whereas the table was made up of plywood and pallets. Finally, the stools were built by Team C.
FINAL INSTALLATION After lots of hard work, the construction of the gazebo had eventually come to an end. During the last few days of construction, we still had not installed our facade even though the deadline was fast approaching. Due to the constant heavy rains during the two weeks, our progress was considerably delayed. We felt nothing but frustration and demotivation as we watched the rain pour. In spite of the poor weather conditions, the members still found hope in finishing the project before its due date rather than to give up. With the help of our lecturers, we recognized our mistakes and solved them together throughout the entire process. We went for site visits nearly every single day, even on a public holiday to help out with the construction. Unexpectedly, we managed to accomplish the impossible; on the day before the due date, the 4 facades came close to completion. The time pressure had given us the motivation and confidence to complete the project on time. We sanded the surface of the gazebo and carried out several tests to ensure the structure could withstand potential technical issues. We placed and arranged our wood and tire furniture in the gazebo and decorated the exterior with potted plants for enlivenment. As a result, the overall outcome was brilliant! To us, we were beyond satisfied with how the gazebo turned out; it was an absolute miracle!
On behalf community architecture year 2018, special thanks to Mr Munzir for his selfless action by lending us a hand on construction of gazebo and standing by us for this BER: SAMA project. Though it was tremendous rain involuntarily, he kept working for the gazebo and no words to describe his sincere selflessness.
The gazebo caters a serene and tranquil ambience to have a rest.
Team A members were in high spirit after completion of gazebo and we gained alot during the process.
OPERATION BEAUTIFY GAZEBO WRITTEN BY QUTREEN KHAIRUL
THE CREATION Upon the announcement that only one gazebo was to be built instead of four, new tasks for each group were immediately allocated. The priority for Tam B, C, D was to decorate and enhance the identity of the TIKL institution’s compound to the best of their ability. By improving an existing element of the institution and promoting a refreshing change in the school’s individuality, Team B had the privilege of beautifying and reviving the gazebo located beside that of Team A. Since the existing metal gazebo looked unattended to and worn out, it was a prime objective to bring life and therefore, evoke attention to the area the way it perhaps did in its newly-launched state. A new air of exuberance, excitement and invitation would be exuded by bringing vibrancy into the gazebo, restoring it to create the quintessential lively environment and depict the flamboyance of the TIKL students.
PROCESS Step 1- Brainstorming Ideas
DULL AND DREARY: The metal gazebo located in close proximity to the school canteen and Team A's gazebo (under construction during the time at which the photo was taken) presented an air of mediocrity, indifference and blandness; a contradiction to the effervescence of the TIKL students. .
Team B commenced on the project, starting off by suggesting ideas on different potential ways the area could be decorated. From whimsical pavement art to colored plastic bottle decorations, rustic wood wall hangings to upcycling jean pants into quirky planters and roof cutouts to wall paintings, each group member made it a point to provide their input and demonstrate their collaborative efforts. Recurring themes of tropical accents, vibrant contrasting colors, geometrical patterns, juxtapositions between light and shadow and the use of eco-friendly materials were seen among the many ideas proposed. With a conclusion formed and a proposal letter written, the group filtered out all the options and had come to the decision to paint a distinctive mural design adjoining the floor and the wall to show connectivity between the two spaces. Additionally, the sides of the gazebo plastered to restore its original footprint shape.
Step 2: Prep-work
SANDING AWAY: Team B members use sand paper to remove the outermost layer of rust and old paint on the steel structure for a fresh, vibrant color to be painted on. For the reason of the relatively-large area, manpower is required to complete this aspect of the prep-work.
Inter-group roles within Team B were immediately allocated among its members once the proposal letter was submitted to the heads of TIKL. To provide feasible working surfaces; a smooth blank canvas on which the mural would be painted and restoration work to be executed, participation and collective efforts must be established. The Team B members were further divided into small groups, entrusted with handling the tasks of dismantling the existing old chairs and table, cleaning moss on the wall, clearing the surrounding area by picking grass and rocks off the ground, plastering the sides of the gazebo, sanding the steel structure and repainting the wall white. Notwithstanding the labor-intensive task, the prepwork was completed within two days of site visits and rather efficient at that. The space looked significantly better once all the impurities were cleared off, not to mention the liberation of being able to vision the possible elements added to the gazebo and its surrounding area was undeniable. It displayed a sense of optimism; hope for a never-before-seen ebullience to be established.
Step 3: Painting
Once completing the prep-work, the rest of the time up to the day in advance of the launch event was spent diligently painting. Time slots for the group’s diverse schedules were arranged; either the members chose to go during the morning or in the afternoon. Despite the difficulties in sorting out the availabilities of 27 group members, Team B managed to embark on the task at hand with great effort and drive; some members were even present at the site during times of inconvenience.
GETTING HANDS DIRTY: Tidying up the space by pulling grass and picking up leaves and rocks from the ground to reveal a cleaner, more attractive floor.
The work commenced by planning out the design of the mural in Michelle’s (Team B leader) sketchbook and using inspiration pictures for aid. Vivacious colors of red, orange, yellow, green and blue would be used to truly encapsulate the desired atmosphere of the gazebo. The geometry, symmetry and repetition of the shapes in the design epitomized modernity while still retaining the elements of piquancy and youth. In addition to the wall art, a revival of the dull gray roof of the gazebo was to be undertaken. Drawing inspiration from a rainbow, it was decided to accentuate the roof’s curved shape by painting it in rows of different repeating colors. Unlike the wall mural, less time was spent on the planning of the roof’s design as it was more so a decision of spontaneity. However, due to time constraints, it was almost unachievable to build furniture and make planters. Furthermore, the uneven surfaces of the brick paver made it impossibly difficult to paint on the design of connectivity that was originally proposed, not to mention the lack of floor space. Therefore, prominence had to be placed on the designs of the wall and roof themselves. Amidst the painting process, a delay in work was ensued as a result of the constant daily rains. These uncontrollable conditions presented huge obstacles for the team members. However, Team B managed to find the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.
Step 4: Final Product
FIRST STROKES: Starting to paint the first strokes of the curved roof in rows and contained within the lines of the wall mural design, warm and cool colors are applied.
In spite of the struggles the team endured, whether it be unfavorable weather conditions or time constraints, the group as a collective was exhilarated to be able to leave their mark in the form of works of art. The restored area was almost unrecognizable; evoking a new air of vivacity and brightness. After two weeks of intense work and having to frequently be present at the site, Team B's efforts have finally paid off, just in time for the final launch event.
PAINT STAINS, SWEAT AND TEARS: Team B members demonstrate a great deal of collaborative effort in this labor-intensive task. Time, tenacity, manpower and copious amounts of thinner are necessary for the completions of the roof and wall mural
FINISHING TOUCHES: Cleaning up lines, drawing the “Community Architecture” logo and painting the sides of the plastered floor black to cover up the coarseness underneath.

FURNITURE WORKSHOP
WRITTEN BY CHERILYN & PRISCILLA
Step 1 : ThinkTank As the decision to scrap off the idea of building 4 Gazebos , to building one Group 3 were tasked to design and build the furniture for the gazebo . To go with Group 1’s gazebo design , Group 3 chose to apply what we have learned in this semester in Furniture Workshop class into use . Step 2 : Make the furniture As we had the instruction manual for the design of furniture that we were building , everything was smooth sailing . We got large planks of plywood from the same supplier and we began construction almost immediately. Split into groups of 6 , each cluster of students were tasked to make a side table and a bench . Everything was done before sunset . Step 3 : Sand and Paint protective coating After the pieces were completed , they were sanded to smooth out the rough surfaces . Then , top portion of the benches were painted with black paint to give it a more mysterious outlook whilst leaving the legs of the benches bare . The side tables was left bare in comparison to the benches to compliment both the Gazebo and the benches . After the paint has dried , all the pieces were coated one last time with a protective coating to preserve it from the elements . Step 4 : Branding We wanted to leave a mark , that we helped build this amazing gazebo unfortunately the laser printer broke down right when we needed it . So we resulted to creating stencils of the logo and spray painting it in a sparkling silver paint . .
PORTABLE FURNITURE Furniture plays a very unique yet important part of various humans activities , which enriches the lives of the humans . Furniture can be a product of design and is considered a form of decorative art. In addition to furniture's functional role, it can serve a symbolic or religious purpose. It can be made from many materials, including metal, plastic, and wood. Local culture uses a variety of woodworking joineries in its furniture. For the gazebo , we had the students of TIKL requesting to have a serenaded space for siting and also some space for storage . So we came out with some interesting furniture ideas for the gazebo, such as a table some stools and also place for storage. In the process of making the furniture , Team D members used only timber and woodworking joineries . Joinery is a part of woodworking that involves uniting together pieces of timber or lumber, to produce more intricate items. Some wood joints employ fasteners, bindings, or adhesives, while others use only wood elements. By shaping various pieces to fit perfectly in unison and locking in place . The characteristics of wooden joints - strength, flexibility, toughness, appearance, etc. - derive from the properties of the materials involved and the purpose of the joint. Therefore, different joinery techniques are used to meet differing requirements. For example, the joinery used to construct a house can be different from that used to make puzzle toys, although some concepts overlap.
In addition , there are two types of woodworking joineries – traditional woodworking joints and non traditional woodworking joints. Cross lap woodworking joinery is majorly used in our furniture design. Cross lap joinery is a joint in which the two pieces are attached by removing a section from each at the point of intersection so that they overlap.
THE CENTRALIZED GARDEN WRITTEN BY HUI LING
GLAMORIZING
TEAM D MEMBERS, SOONG EN AND YI QI WENT TO THE GARDENING STORE TO BUY THE PLANTS.
WHILE TEAM A, B AND C PURSUED THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE GAZEBO, REFURBISHED THE ABANDONED GAZEBO, AND BUILT FURNITURE, TEAM D WAS ENTRUSTED OF THE TASK TO ENHANCE THE SCHOOL COMPOUND BY MAKING A GARDEN ON A PIECE OF UNUSED LAND SET BETWEEN TWO BLOCKS OF CLASSROOMS WITH A SQUARE PLAN. THE EXISTING LAND INITIALLY HAD A FEW PLANTS SURROUNDING A FERN, WHICH LOOKED DULL AND LIFELESS. THEREFORE, IT WAS TEAM D’S OBLIGATION TO PROVIDE A REFRESHING LANDSCAPE OF FLORAL AND GREEN VIEWS FOR THE STUDENTS AND TEACHERS OF TIKL AND PROMOTE THE ATMOSPHERE OF BEING CLOSE TO NATURE.
Precedents CENTRALIZED GARDEN A DECISION WAS MADE UPON MEETINGS, DISCUSSIONS AND THE DESIGN PROCESS. THE IDEA WAS TO CREATE A GARDEN OF SIMPLICITY THAT DREW ATTENTION TO ITS CENTER; AN AREA OF CENTRALIZATION WHERE STUDENTS COULD SIT AROUND, CHIT-CHAT AND RELAX. ACCORDING TO THE RESEARCH DONE OF THE SITE CIRCULATION, IT SHOWED THAT BUILDING PAVEMENTS IN THE GARDEN WOULD IMPROVE THE CIRCULATORY MOVEMENT FOR WHICH THE STUDENTS COULD WALK THROUGH. IN ORDER TO REDUCE PROJECT COSTS AND ALSO IN KEEPING WITH THE THEME OF REDUCING ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT , UNWANTED TYRES WERE PLANNED TO BE UPCYCLED INTO PLANTERS FOR PLANTS. FIRST OF ALL, WE STARTED THE PREP -WORK BY RELOCATING THE FERN THAT WAS IRRELEVANT TO THE PLANNING OF THE GARDEN. FROM PENCIL TO SHOVEL, T-SQUARE TO HOE; DESPITE EVERYONE BEING INEXPERIENCED GARDENERS, OUR WILLINGNESS TO LEARN AND TRY HAD GIVEN US THE MOTIVATION TO COMPLETE THE TASK. THE SPIRIT AND TEAMWORK OUR TEAM DISPLAYED WERE THE KEYS TO THE SUCCESS OF OUR PROJECT EXECUTION , AS QUOTED BY HELEN KELLER, ”ALONE WE CAN DO SO LITTLE, TOGETHER WE CAN DO SO MUCH.” AFTER THAT, WE PROCEEDED WITH THE MARKING OF THE COORDINATION WITH ACCURATE MEASUREMENTS.
I. PREPARATION
II. PURCHASING THE PLANT A GROUP OF MEMBERS WENT TO A PLANT NURSERY IN CHERAS IN SEARCH OF POSSIBLE SUITABLE PLANTATIONS FOR OUR GARDEN WITHOUT OVERSPENDING OUR RM500 BUDGET. AFTER A PERIOD OF TIME, WE HAD CHOSEN TO INCLUDE 50 SMALL PLANTS, 5 MEDIUM-SIZED PLANTS AND 1 2-METER TREE, WHICH COULD GROW UP TO 6 METERS ONCE FULLY-GROWN. WE FINALLY TRANSPORTED THE PLANTS WITH THE HELP OF THE TIKL SCHOOL VAN.
III. PLANTING AFTER TRANSPORTING THE PLANTS TO TIKL, WE STARTED TO PLACE ACCORDING TO PLANNED PATTERN. AS WE HAD VARIOUS SIZES AND COLORS OF PLANTS, WE EXPLORED BY BRINGING FORTH NEW IDEAS ON DIFFERENT KINDS OF PATTERNS AND ARRANGEMENTS OF COORDINATION TO FULLY INCORPORATE THE PLANTS AND PROVIDE THE BEST AESTHETICS FOR THE GARDEN. FOR ADDED DECORATION, WE USED RECYCLED MATERIALS SUCH AS TIRES AND WOOD PALLETS TO SEAMLESSLY BLEND INTO OUR LANDSCAPE WHILE INCORPORATING ECOFRIENDLY ELEMENTS. EVERYONE IN TEAM D FULLY DEMONSTRATED THEIR COMMITMENT TO THEIR RESPECTIVE TASKS AND EVEN THOUGH IT RAINING, THE ENTHUSIASM WE RADIATED ENSURED WE FINISHED THE TASK ON TIME. FOR THIS REASON, IT ONLY TOOK APPROXIMATELY 2 DAYS TO COMPLETE THE ENTIRE PLANTING PROCESS.
IV. PATHWAY AND FENCING INSTALLATION SUCCEEDING THE WORKING OF THE PAVEMENT, WE LAID DOWN THE WALKWAY MADE OF PLYWOOD PANELS AND CUT BY TEAM C. WE MARKED OUR EXACT COORDINATION USING STRING, FOLLOWED BY THE LAYING OF THE PLYWOOD PANELS. MUCH TO OUR SURPRISE, THE WET SOIL CAUSED BY THE RAIN MADE THE JOB MORE EFFICIENT AS IT TOOK LESS EFFORT FOR US TO PLACE THE PLYWOOD PANELS RIGIDLY INTO THE SOIL. LASTLY, WE INSTALLED FENCES AROUND THE AREA TO MAKE THE GARDEN LOOK MORE PLEASING TO THE EYE AS WELL AS PROVIDING A SENSE OF ORGANIZATION. THIS GARDEN MAKING PROJECT CONCLUDED WITH THE PLACING OF TEAM C’S BENCHES IN THE MIDDLE OF THE GARDEN.
V. FINISHED EVERYONE’S COOPERATION AND EDICATION THROUGHOUT THE PROJECT WAS AN UNDENIABLE REASON FOR THE ASTONISHING OUTPUT. IT WAS A GREAT EXPERIENCE FOR US AS ORDINARY STUDENTS TO GIVE BACK HE KNOWLEDGE WE HAVE LEARNED IN SCHOOL TO THE COMMUNITY.

To mark the end of the Community Architecture project including the gazebo construction, restoration, beautification works and furniture production, an official event ensued as a celebration of all the efforts demonstrated among the Semesters 4 and 5 students alike for the prior two months. Not only was it the aim to showcase and celebrate our endeavors but to also create an atmosphere of excitement for the launch of the gazebo. Considering the fact that the event was targeted mainly towards the people of TIKL, it was necessary to provide them an insight into our core values and expectations as UCSI students by presenting an introduction to the Community Architecture project and the architecture course as a whole. Furthermore, several past works of Architecture and Interior students were displayed in the hall as a presentation and exhibition of our capabilities. All things considered, it was a day to honor the collaboration and between the two institutions; SABE UCSI University and SM Teknik KL and celebrate their budding interinstitutional relationship.

“We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us.” Qutreen Khairul (Event Team)
If the two-month Community Architecture course has taught me anything, it is to not be reluctant to take risks and not let your apprehension hinder you from gaining new life experiences. I realize the value of surrounding myself with people of difference from the community no matter the age, calibre or race. They aid us in building character and providing a fresh perspective on approaching issues. In the eyes of the youngest student in the semester, I believe that architecture not only involves building habitable structures but it also encourages the building of relationships and highlights the importance of human interaction. For the reason of the evident collaborative efforts demonstrated throughout this eight-week period, I would like to express my eternal gratitude to everyone involved in the project. Thanks you all for making Community Architecture an experience to remember!
REFLECTIONS
“ Individuals play the game, but teams beat the odds. ” Arafa Binti Islam (Logistics Team)
Serving the community through my knowledge of architecture provided me with a platform to showcase my talent and transform my thoughts and knowledge into a more practical aspect. As a member of the logistics department, we strived together on achieving one common goal as a team. We not only managed to create an atmosphere of fostering friendships and loyalty; but also, with our diverse talents, weaknesses, communication skills, strengths and habits; we strived together to overcome a great deal of hurdles coming our way. If it wasn’t for this teamwork, it would have been a lot more complicated job to accomplish what we have achieved today. I never came across the fact that the working environment of an individual has a great deal of impact on the work productivity. But one thing that I realized during the project building phase was the fact that all of us were classmates, working in an extremely friendly environment, it was for the mini breaks, the short gossips and the friendly nature among all of us classmates that help us overcome the tiredness and fatigue and it actually motivated us to work harder with a fresh mind. This not only helped us in completing our project well on time but it also boosted our morale and confidence, eventually having the highest level of satisfaction, with a will power to indulge ourselves with more projects of the similar type.
“ The wonders of working in a media team for Community Architecture. ” Daniel Loo Kye Wern (Media Team)
Volunteering in the media team for Community architecture was a fun and active bunch to join. We explored many ways in the media team to capture and captivate people to absorb within the adventure of what Community Architecture truly brings. Strategies and tactics to bring as much viewers to follow us through as we grow. We focus on the moment of the activities and achievements of our work, sharing with them all the way from the smallest details. Starting from the TIKL students, UCSI students, school teachers, lectures and the participants who joins in our family. Through highs and lows, due to various impromptu events, we dedicated ourselves to be presenting there to catch such important moments to carry as much footage to deliver Community Architecture History. Values were created in our department. Dealing with people such as parents, teenagers and working social adults. I truly want to thank Jun Ming, our Department Leader, to put in such dedication to keep the team in line and input creative knowledge to our media team. He is a great friend to share our experiences together throughout our duties. Lastly, I would like to thank Ms Echa, Mr Brandon, Kuhann and the other Department leaders with other volunteers who put their efforts to make our project a success. BER : SAMA
REFLECTIONS
“ Life is like a rainbow, you need both the sun and the rain to make it’s appear. " Siaw Yong Shen (Design Team)
Paint is a living language for me. At the beginning, my idea was not to paint the roof of the antiquated and prosaic gazebo. It’s transformed from my initial idea of recycled plastic bottles with colouring liquid and then ties them together to create a stunning topographical shade gazebo for the students. Unfortunately, owing to the scarcity of time and budget, painting the roof colourfully is the best solution for me. In fact, my idea to paint strips of colours on the roof is to wish the students to pass their exams with flying colours as colour is a power which directly influences the soul. Time flies, the outcome of the vivid gazebo is inevitably splendid, yet not forget the griever and sweats of the members who helped me a lot painting the roof, sacrificing their precious time. It is a memorable and unforgettable experience for each of us serving the community and representing architecture field. Briefly, this colourful and refreshed gazebo speaks thousand words that hard to be described. Hopefully, the users of the gazebo will have an enjoyable moment by staying under the gazebo.
“ Communication is the golden key to success. ” Lee Mei Shin (Media Team)
Everyone has their own duty to do in each team. Being in the media team, most of the time we think that the footage we took were not god enough because there are eight of us were taking and doing the same task. But eventually, I realized the beauty of different angle, produced different views and told a different story. Even in life, we can look at things in different perspectives. Inside every single picture has a soul, which freeze and capture the moment that we had, joyful or sadness; anger or sympathize, it is part of live that ever cannot be removed. There were many difficulties faced during the 7 weeks journey. Many of us have no idea and experience on what, where and how we were going to design and build a gazebo by ourselves to contribute to the community. There were ups and downs. In the beginning, we were strangers, put together as a group and did not know our group mates well which leads to lack of communication with our group mates and leaders. This caused a little annoyance and conflict, and it made us did twice the job required. As the days passed, the more we worked with each other, the iceberg between us began to melt. Throughout this whole experience, I came to a realization that group work and good communication are very important to make any project and group work successful.
