What do I want to research? What is important to me in my practice? What do I want to improve within my practice?

ORIGINAL PROPOSAL

Focus - : Communication & Abstraction

Key themes/theories : Simplification, Semiotics, Symbolism, Visual metaphor.

Art movements - Constructivism, Fauvism, Cubism & Abstract Expressionism.

How do contemporary illustrators use forms of abstraction (both practically and conceptually) to communicate complex ideas?

OVER SUMMER

•

Key aspects of my Practice : shape, composition, colour, conceptual ideas/symbolism, simplicity, craft/the handmade.

•

The purpose of my Research Project : To gain a deeper understanding of the mechanics of image-making in order to develop my own practical skills, craftsmanship and discover a way of working that identifies with me as a practitioner.

HARMONY What is visual harmony? How is harmony constructed and deconstructed?

APPROACH TO RESEARCH • Key theme - Aesthetics • Psychology of human eye and mind - How do we see things? VISUAL PERCEPTION. • Balance, Rhythm, Shape, Colour, Form, Light, Movement.

Key Quotes Looking at images as a WHOLE

“No object is perceived as unique or isolated”, “Seeing something involves assigning it a place in the whole.” (Arnheim, R.)

“Relativity and instability of colour”, “interpendence of colour with form and placement; with quantity; with quality; and with pronouncement.” (Albers, J)

“In a balanced composition all such factors as shape, direction and location are mutually determined in such a way that no change seems possible, and the whole assumes the character of “necessity” in all its parts.” (Arnhiem, R)

“Man strives for equilibrium in all phases of his physical and mental existence.” (Arnheim, R)

FURTHER RESEARCH

The deconstruction of harmony.

“An unbalanced composition looks accidental, transitory and therefore invalid”, “Under conditions of imbalance, the artistic statement becomes incomprehensible”, We have the sense that the process of creation has been accidentally frozen somewhere along the way” (Arnheim, R)

The uncanny? Ugly aesthetics?

Art movements : Modernism, Constructivism, Abstract Expressionism…

Practical Response • Experimentation / testing : Creating illustrations using the process/mechanics of imagemaking I have learnt in my theoretical research e.g. Gestalt theory • Outcome? : Make two series of images - representing harmony and disorder. • What should be my content?
