A Royal Welcome It is an honor to be Leavenworth’s 50th Royal Lady! I have lived in this town for a long time, but each day I celebrate this is my home. No other place I have ever visited has the unique set of qualities Leavenworth has to offer. From the four beautiful and distinct seasons to the amazing landscape, the Bavarian theme to the agricultural wealth of the area, Leavenworth truly is a miracle town! Anyone who knows me knows that I love to travel, especially to Germany. It never fails to amaze me that on my travels I frequently run into people who have visited and love our town. I love to hear the excitement in the voices of the people who have visited here, and the most common phrase I hear is “You are so lucky to live in such a beautiful place!” They are absolutely right. My life in Leavenworth has been blessed in so many ways. As a business person, I have benefited from the unique miracle of an authentic-looking Bavarian Village centrally located on a major highway in one of the loveliest states in our nation. So many people travel here from
all over the world because we offer something truly unique – a town that looks like it was scooped up from the Bavarian Alps and set down in a place with something for everyone. From festivals to skiing to rafting to wine tasting to hiking – we have it all! This is a great place to raise a family because of the clean air, beautiful surroundings and the community spirit. Even now that my children are grown, I am still enjoying the beauty of the hiking trails, lakes and many recreational activities of the area, including fabulous music events and fun festivals. The Autumn Leaf Festival has always been dear to my heart. I have been a participant in the parades for many years, driving my team of horses and wagon alongside locals in Dirndl & Lederhosen, floats and marching bands. I love how our Village shines in the eyes of all the participants and onlookers. Now, more than ever, Leavenworth offers the vision of a small town that dared to dream and achieve great things. I am proud and honored to represent our town this year as Royal Lady. I hope to see you and be sure to wave and say, “Gruess Gott!” Heidi Forchemer, Royal Lady of the Autumn Leaves 2013
Herzlich Willkommen You are most cordially welcome to the beautiful Bavarian Village of Leavenworth and we thank you for choosing to visit us! This lovely community has a rich and interesting history from our earliest days of logging and lumber mills when the Great Northern Railway tracks travelled right through the center of town. (Don’t miss the Leavenworth Museum, especially if you’re a history buff!) Agriculture has always been important to our heritage as well, and this region has always been world-famous for the pears and apples grown right in this valley. More recently, we have created a flourishing wine industry and local vintners are constantly planting interesting varieties of grapes to enhance their local wine production. Leavenworth has a wonderful variety of restaurants, bakeries and specialty food shops to appeal to every taste. Whether you’re crav-
ing a traditional bratwurst and sauerkraut on a bun or a romantic alfresco dinner experience for two, we can serve you. Looking for lodging? We can accommodate you with a great selection of Bed and Breakfasts, hotels, motels, cabins, condos and camping, ranging from worldclass hotels to tenting and everything in between. Because we are so perfectly situated in the picturesque eastern foothills of the Cascade Mountains, our four-season climate creates opportunities for all kinds of outdoor activities all year round. From a scenic round of golf along the Wenatchee River to a stroll in one of Leavenworth’s beautiful parks, to extreme rock climbing. We have it all! Hiking, biking, river rafting, dog-sledding, birding, cross-country and downhill skiing, tubing, sledding, snowmobiling, kayaking, horseback riding, fishing, swimming, or just enjoying the sun…the list is endless and so is the fun! Leavenworth has dozens of ways to entertain you including authentic Bavarian folk music performances in our historic Front Street
Park Gazebo, strolling musicians, world-class chamber music concerts at the Icicle Creek Music Center and live music and dancing downtown. Every year our own Leavenworth Summer Theater presents high quality musical theater performances in three different venues, as well as a Christmas season holiday presentation every winter. Don’t miss the annual outdoor performances of “The Sound of Music.” Trust me, you’ll want to see them all! So relax, tour the village, enjoy the art in the park, feast your eyes on our beautiful snow-capped mountains and make a few memories. Come and take part in one of our many festivals, come for a day, come for a weekend or spend as long as you can with us. Leavenworth has so much to offer, you’ll want to visit us again and again, and Leavenworth’s legendary hospitality will be waiting for you. Cheri Kelley Farivar, City of Leavenworth Mayor

If you’re visiting during one of Leavenworth’s many great festivals or on a weekend, parking close to downtown may be a challenge. Parking in the paid lots is your best choice for close to downtown parking. We advise against parking in private, restricted or reserved lots, however. Those places are visibly marked, so you shouldn’t have any problems avoiding them. Where is a good place to eat?
We are asked this question most of all and our response is always the same: What do you like? An

Festivals furnish year-round fun
Life in Leavenworth is a festival. In keeping with German tradition, the little Bavarian Village nestled at the foot of the Cascade Mountain Range holds Maifest, Oktoberfest and Christkindlmarkt every year. These events, along with exclusive festivals such as the Spring Bird Fest, Ale Fest, Bavarian Bike and Brews, Kinderfest, the International Accordion Festival, the Washington State Autumn Leaf Festival, our nationally recognized Christmas Lighting Festival and Bavarian Icefest give the Bavarian Village its rich character. The variety of activities and educational experiences at these events make visiting Leavenworth truly unique. There is something to celebrate during every season in Leavenworth, so bring the whole family and let the scenery, parades, music and food lift your spirits, and don’t forget to check our website for updates—www.leavenworthecho.com.

Were you surprised to be asked to be Royal Lady and why? I was so happy to be asked to be the Royal Lady of my hometown. What an honor! I grew up in Leavenworth and watched my town slowly change. It went from being full of familiar faces, to being packed with thousands of strangers. What was the most exciting part of your year as the Royal Lady? I am so proud of our community and what it has accomplished over the last 50 years. The Autumn Leaf Festival Association and the Royal Ladies have been instrumental in taking Leavenworth from a small, dying town and turning it into a thriving city with millions of visitors each year. The spirit and beauty of Leavenworth leaves a lasting impression on the memories of its visitors. What changes have you seen in our community because of the Royal Lady as ambassador for Leavenworth? My year was a very dramatic one for Leavenworth. In 1994, we had the big fires and the entire town was surrounded by flames. Leavenworth was on the national news daily. We were cut off from Seattle and they thought we were goners! Seattle was astonished when we showed up for the Sea Fair Parade. The pass had been closed for days. The country thought we were burning up and expected us to be a no show. You wouldn’t have believed the crowd. As our float passed with the sign “thanks for your support Seattle” the crowd rose in a standing ovation. We were loved. Many tears were shed at that parade.
Avian opportunities are everywhere! Make sure to bring your binoculars to the Leavenworth Spring Bird Fest. There’s lots to see. 6

Christmas Lighting Festival December 6-8, 13-15, 20-22
Leavenworth’s Christmas Lighting Festival is the standard by which all other Christmas Festivals are measured. A festival that truly captures the international flavor of Christmas, it has been honored by Arts and Entertainment Television, the Travel Channel and Home and Garden Television. A special early morning lighting ceremony was held a few years ago in order to wish the entire country a Merry Christmas on “Good Morning America!” live from New York at 7 a.m. eastern time. Whether it is a romantic carriage ride through the streets, a glass of Glüwein (hot spiced German wine) in the park, the smell of roasting chestnuts, singing along with the carolers in front of the Gazebo, shopping for a truly unique present in our gift shops that offer goods from all over the world, taking the grandkids sledding in Front Street Park, having your picture taken with one of our many colorful Christmas characters, or just watching the sparkle in children’s eyes when the lighting ceremony turns on the Christmas lights each evening, there is a special memory for everyone who has been to Leavenworth for Christmas. A Leavenworth Christmas is a delightful blend of old world and new world traditions that keep visitors coming back year after year. A Leavenworth Christmas is a special treat that brings out the child in all of us. And now, with

The Royal Lady of the Autumn Leaves, your royal hostess for 50 years The Royal Ladies of the Autumn Leaves has been a Leavenworth tradition for 50 years now. Starting with Martha Jensen in 1964 to the current Royal Lady Heidi Forchemer, it is a Leavenworth tradition. Each year, the Royal Lady is selected by special Autumn Leaf Festival Association Committee. The selection of the Royal Lady is entirely a secret. And this secret
must be kept until the Royal Lady is formally introduced to the community at the Royal Lady Banquet in March. It is such a guarded secret not even the family of the Royal Lady can know. What was the most exciting part of your year as the Royal Lady? The most exciting part of my year was hosting festival dignitaries from other communities during our own Autumn Leaf Festival and parade. I have always been very proud of what the people in our Upper Valley have accomplished. Not only do we live in a beautiful part of the world, but we also share this valley with active, accomplished, community minded people who have created a wonderland to share with others. It was an honor and pleasure to “show off” this community. What changes have you seen in our community because of the Royal Lady as ambassador for Leavenworth? Each Royal Lady will bring her own style to her year as ambassador for Leavenworth. However, the importance of her position is the “why” it exists. A lady is chosen because of her service to and personal knowledge of our community. These two attributes are both prized and fostered by any town striving to be strong and vital. If the citizens are proud of where they live and are willing to spend free time building community, then that town will be strong. The position of Royal Lady celebrates and brings attention to that which is good for our town: service and personal knowledge of our community. When Leavenworth created the position of Royal Lady, the town embraced these ideals and thus began the journey to where it is today: a strong, vibrant community that has much to offer.

Royal Lady Memories
Nancy J. Watson Royal Lady 2011 Were you surprised to be asked to be Royal Lady and why? I was very surprised. I’ve always felt our Royal Ladies represent all that is truly wonderful and unique about Leavenworth. So many of our Royal Ladies held true to the dream that Leavenworth was a wonderful place to live, raise a family and share the pride of our community. They made so many personal sacrifices to support everybody in our community and creat the welcoming atmosphere that The Bavarian Village is known for. What was the most exciting part of your year as the Royal Lady? I can still feel the excitement I felt as each community in the Northwest Festival Hosting Group’s welcomed our beautiful float and the Autumn Leaf and Royal Bavarian escorts to their parade. I was always treated as Royalty. What changes have you seen in our community because of the Royal Lady as ambassador for Leavenworth? The position of Royal Lady of the Autumn Leaves is much more than riding the float in the parades throughout Washington, Oregon, and Canada. In each of the communities where I represented Leavenworth I also spoke to groups of anywhere from 50 to 300 people. I represented Leavenworth in printed material as well as on television in many of those communities. Everywhere my escort and I went we were in trachten and were greeted warmly and with many questions. It still amazes me the number of people who have never been to Leavenworth. This statement usually always leads to a discussion of those nearby endorsing what a wonderful place it is and that they must visit.

What was the most exciting part of your year as the Royal Lady? The best and most exciting part was meeting the many people of different communities and festivals all over the state, Oregon and Canada. We all were promoting our towns and communities for tourism and to present our festival, showing the enjoyment of visiting our Bavarian Leavenworth. Although it is impossible to pick the very best festival as they were all exciting and colorful, I feel like the Spokane Lilac Festival was the crown jewel of them all. To see the support of the miliary at Fairchild Air Force Base was awesome. We had the privledge to have an event at the base. The pure enjoyment of hearing the excellent military band and singers as well. It was hard to keep the goose bumps in control. What changes have you seen in our community because of the Royal Lady as ambassador for Leavenworth? For awhile, the enthusiasm and support for the Autumn Leaf Festival and Royal Lady was waning. Now, it seems there is a surge of excitement again about our Bavarian Village and festivals. Our festival is a family affair and it is inspiring to see families enjoying our village and people who represent Leavenworth.

Based on the iconic movie musical, Footloose! explodes onto stage with exuberance, high octane dance numbers and unforgettable 80’s power ballads that will have you dancing in your seat and singing in the shower. This is the story of Ren McCormack, a Chicago teenager who is uprooted by tragedy and planted in a sleepy Midwestern town where - due to a terrible car accident - curfews are early, rock n’ roll is frowned upon, and dancing is straight up illegal! But as he makes friends and enemies in the town - including Ariel, the freespirited daughter of the outspoken local minister, and Willard, a farm boy with a heart of gold - they realize that they cannot be silent in the face of grief. They must toe the line, find their voice, and reclaim their right to joy, their right to dance. Fueled by such 80s hits as “Holding Out for a Hero”, “Let’s Hear It For the Boy” and, of course,

All performances are at the Festhalle Theater, located one block from the center of the downtown Christmas lighting festivities.

The Sound of Music makes the hills come alive By Ian Dunn Leavenworth Echo Editor
Since it began in 1994, the Leavenworth Summer Theater has presented “The Sound of Music” more than 300 times. It began on a small stage near the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery, delighting audiences from the very start. Set on an outdoor stage in the beautiful Icicle Valley, the show was a hit. LST organizers had expected it might run its course in few years, but it never happened. The timeless music, the compelling love story, the fine
performers and the beautiful outdoor setting just never got old with audiences, especially in the Bavarian Village of Leavenworth. Some years later, the show moved to the Ski Hill Theater, where it is performed today. No one can forget watching Maria begin the performance coming down the hillside behind the audience, singing “The Hills are Alive.” It is just the perfect setting for a musical set in the Austrian Alps. The show’s popularity is such that patrons come again and again. Some come to the show every year. When you see it, you’ll agree. It really is a local treasure.

Royal Lady Memories Sandy OwensCarmody Royal Lady 2008 Were you surprised to be asked to be Royal Lady and why? Yes, I was surprised to be asked to be Royal Lady. Even though I had been in the community for over 20 years, I wasn’t born and raised in Leavenworth, so being asked was very special and a huge honor for me. What was the most exciting part of your year as the Royal Lady? Three things were very exciting to me as Royal Lady; First, the enthusiasm of crowds at the parades was amazing. The second thing was the first award we won which in my year was first place for Community C & D Division at the Apple Blossom Parade and being handed the award by Linda Haglund, who was the Assistant Director General for Apple Blossom. Third, was my birthday that year, May 31, landed smack dab on the Starlight Festival in Portland and I never could have imagined such a special birthday. The crowds were so large the float could hardly inch along some of the streets. With great joy we brought home the Sweepstakes Award from that parade, which is voted on by the people watching the parade live and on TV. It was fun! What changes have you seen in our community because of the Royal Lady as ambassador for Leavenworth? Because of the Royal Lady acting as a goodwill ambassador for Leavenworth, people have an impression of warm hospitality and invitation to come and visit our community because we consider you family! I was really blessed to have been chosen and I will always cherish it!

Royal Lady Memories Wilda Ward Royal Lady 1984 Were you surprised to be asked to be Royal Lady and why? Certainly, I was surprised and honored to be asked to be Royal Lady because I was mindful there were many others more deserving than me. What was the most exciting part of your year as the Royal Lady? The most exciting part of my year was spending time with all the other festival friends and being a part of all the parades in Washington and Canada representing Leavenworth. What changes have you seen in our community because of the Royal Lady as ambassador for Leavenworth? I believe because of all the parades we attend, many of the spectators visit here all year long. We are well received along the route with, “We love Leavenworth.” The festival is a respected family affair, and for 50 years, has been an asset to the community. I hope the city, merchants and citizens continue to support it.

World class wines await visitors
Who would have imagined just a few short years ago that Washington would be challenging wine growing regions like the Napa Valley as home of the best wines in the world? But today serene vineyards have replaced many orchards and boutique wineries are producing award winning varieties to tantalize the most discerning palates. The state’s wine industry is roaring. In 1981 the state had 19 wineries. Today the Washington Wine Commission reports there are now more than 740 wineries in operation. Those wineries produce 12 million cases of wine, with an estimated retail value of nearly $500 million. The experts say the wine industry provides a total economic impact to the state of $3 billion. In Chelan County and the Upper Valley the growth has been proportional. From the handful of wineries 10 years ago, now more than 40 wineries, tasting rooms and vineyards dot the county’s landscape. Leavenworth houses at least 20 wine tasting rooms, with more in the outlying areas of Plain, Cashmere and Peshastin. What makes Chelan County wines unique when compared to French, Chilean, California and Submitted photo wines from Walla Walla is the inA charming group of young women offer a toast to the vintner at dustry’s newness when compared Wedge Mountain Winery to its competitors.

Valley wine makers experiment with both white and red varieties with equal curiosity and passion. It’s still too early to say which kinds of wines will establish a reputation in our region. Each variety continues to garner awards and high marks at wine competitions all over the world. Historically, this region has always grown grapes. But with the explosive growth in the industry, wine tastings are scheduled yearround and many wineries are open seven days a week. The most popular times to tour the vineyards are in early summer when the buds begin to break and in late summer when the grapes are at their fullest. But you won’t want to miss the wine stomping during the summer crush period or the wine-and-chocolate winter tastings. Of course, wineries aren’t the only attraction. Before vineyards this area was considered the Apple Capital of the world, and fruit

orchards still dominate the agricultural landscape. Fruit stands can be found all along Highway 2 from Monitor to Lake Wenatchee, and Highway 97 from Blewett Pass north. Tree fruit including apples, pears, nectarines, peaches, apricots, grapes and cherries are available in these picturesque stands, often tended to by their owners from early in the morning until dusk. You can also find locally produced jellies, jams and other food products like green lizard pickles at The Village Alps. Unique arts and crafts made by local artists are also found in these quaint local fruit stands. The Wenatchee valley is still a major world player in the production of apples and pears. Exports compete with places like New Zealand and Chile for an ever-expanding market now reaching places like the People’s Republic of China and Japan, where, for example, our Red Delicious is considered a delicacy. But the apple that put the area on the map is no longer the dominant variety grown here. Local growers have diversified their crops to produce every variety including a few that were created by some of the more innovative local growers. Another unique and popular fruit product, Aplets and Cotlets candy, is made right here in the valley. This world famous fruit candy is made in a broad variety of styles and flavors and tours of the factory in Cashmere are open to the public. Before the Bavarian Village theme, before summer theater, river rafting and Oktoberfest, farmers were turning the Upper Wenatchee River Valley into a rich agricultrual region. With irrigation, those innovative farmers turned a once-arid land into one of the premier fruit-growing areas in the country. As a result of their hard work and dedication, each spring the hills are filled with the sweet aroma of fruit blossoms. Today’s farmers, like the farmers before them, are finding innovative ways to make the land productive and to maximize the financial return from their efforts. W ine , B rews & P roduce Farmers reach out to tourists and visitors by setting up roadside fruit stands, gathering at farmers markets, or offering tours of their orchards and farms. But agri-tourism is more than just fruit stands and orchard tours. It includes wine tasting festivals, car shows, hay rides, petting zoos and even tours of an old fruit packing line. There is no need to leave the kids behind while you explore the local wineries. There are ample opportunities for the entire family to explore the world of agriculture in the Wenatchee River valley. So, if the kids ever asked you where an egg comes from, or you would like to taste a truly fresh pear, you might want to stop by one of the local fruit stands, check out one of the self-guided driving maps available at visitor centers. Tips for taking home your loot If you’re planning to buy in quantity, bring containers or boxes with plenty of packing material so that delicate cargo will make it home safely. Burlap bags sprayed with water are great for transporting corn. This keeps the sugars in corn from turning to starch. If you have a cooler, bring it! Keeping produce cool keeps it fresh. If fresh produce is what you’re after, shop for it last. You may also want to inquire about shipping. Some local growers will ship their produce year ‘round.

H istory
Colorful history goes back to 1800s
The story of Leavenworth’s first 100 years starts and ends with Icicle Ridge and the towering mountain range that shelters the town. The majestic landscape has remained the only constant. Its beauty and abundance drew in eras of eclectic characters who reinvented Leavenworth time and time again. The Early Years, mid-1800s The first people to roam Icicle Valley were the P’squosa, or the Wenatchi, as the settlers called them. They survived by fishing, hunting, picking berries, digging camas roots and other native plants. The salmon runs brought thousands of American Indians from all around the inland Northwest to harvest these great fish all along the Wenatchee River and Icicle River. The gatherings lasted weeks and included ritual dancing, trade, stories and contests. Mining brought an influx of people to after gold was discovered in what is now known as the Blewett Pass area in 1860. Of the hundreds of mines “The Hummingbird” continued production until 1975. The mining camps housed miners of all nationalities including Irish, Scandinavian, Chinese, German and English. Those in the camps depended on a small settlement in the valley, present-day Leavenworth, for shipping, supplies and liquor. The settlement was named Icicle, from the American Indian word “nasikelt” or “narrow-bottom canyon.”
Inn is located. The riverfront at the presentday Enchantment Park was the staging point for the area’s second biggest industry, timber. LaFayette and Chauncery Lamb, brothers from Iowa, arrived in 1903 to build the state’s second largest sawmill. The Lamb-Davis Lumber Company brought in a $2 million fortune after two years of business. At one point the company employed more than 1,000 men. Leavenworth’s streets were abuzz with saloons, brothels, a general store, a school and an opera house. The town was lawless until 1906 when an official city government and sheriff’s office were established. The area’s population exploded to eight times its original number, from 300 in 1900 to 2,500 in 1915, which is approximately the population in Leavenworth today. Between
1910 and 1920, the first hospital, library, cemetery, orchard, modern water system and irrigation district were created. Industry leaves, depression sets in, 1920s-1960s In 1925 the GNRC announced its plans to relocate its headquarters to Wenatchee and move its tracks away from Tumwater Canyon’s dangerous avalanches through Chumstick Canyon instead. The pullout was a heavy blow to the town’s economy. The sawmill closed a year later. Most of the river-accessible logs had been harvested and shipping was difficult with the loss of the railroad. The sudden loss of Leavenworth’s two driving industries, in addition to the first and second world wars, caused a mass exodus. Those who were able to find work depended on the U.S. Forest Service, schools,
the hospital, small businesses or logging operations. Life remained slow for 30 years. Leavenworth area residents enjoyed lighting the Christmas tree in the City Park and also baseball leagues, town dances and church events. A world-famous ski hill shook up the quiet times. A group of Norwegian settlers built a toboggan run and a ski jump in the late ’20s. Skiing became the new buzz in town, bolstered by the Leavenworth Winter Sports Club established in 1929. Spectators in waves of 10,000 a weekend came to watch the international jumping competition, which several locals won. The events stopped when international ski jumping standards changed in the mid-1970s. Project LIFE rescues town By the ’50s it was clear that
Railroad, lumber boom, 1890-1920s The first route across Stevens Pass was built by The Great Northern Railway Company (GNRC) in 1892. The townsite was across the river from Icicle and was named Leavenworth the same year rail construction began. Captain Charles Leavenworth, president of the Okanogan Investment Company, purchased the land in presentday downtown and laid streets parallel to the new tracks. The railroad was completed in the dead of winter 1893. It was the valley’s first connection to the west coast and everything east. Leavenworth became railroad central. Seven sets of tracks were laid downtown where U.S. Highway 2 is now. GNRC also built a roundhouse for turning engines where the present-day Enzian 36

H istory outdoor recreation was not enough for the town to make a living. Businesses were failing. Leavenworth was dubbed a welfare town and jobs were hard to come by. A group of residents banded together to find a way to end the 30-year depression. They were determined not to let their Leavenworth die with the ages. They looked to the alpine mountain scenery for inspiration. New owners of the Squirrel Tree Restaurant at Coles Corner, introduced the alpine theme in 1960 and constructed their neighboring motel in a Swiss alpine style. Others also began to facilitate the change. Townsfolk began Project LIFE (Leavenworth Improvement for Everyone) dedicated to create a community plan of action. In 1964 the Vesta Junior Women’s Club of
Leavenworth won a $10,000 national prize for improvements in Leavenworth. That and the savvy promotions of Leavenworth residents brought new attention and helped sustain the change. It was done without coercion and without government aid. On a summer evening in 1965 at the Tumwater Inn, the Project LIFE committees unanimously agreed to “go alpine” and officially commit to a Bavarian theme and by 1968, 14 buildings had been remodeled. Leavenworth will always be a work in progress. Beginning with the Autumn Leaf Festival in 1964 the town learned to develop new events every year. Leavenworth will host 19 festivals this year, as well as summer theater, art shows and outdoor recreation events that keep visitors coming back year after year.
Leavenworth Time Capsule Leavenworth’s First Centennial Time Capsule was buried in Lions Club Park in downtown Leavenworth six feet south of the flagpole rockery and six feet down under a capstone with “Leavenworth’s Centennial Time Capsule 2006 -2106” inscribed on the grass-level marker. Its exact location is recorded by surveyor’s descriptions, GPS latitude and longitude numerals, and recorded in historical archives. Its opening date is to be Sept. 6, 2106. The contents were selected to reflect Leavenworth’s daily lifestyle and historic past 100 years before the capsule’s opening. Selected items for burial included a 2006 telephone book together with a cell phone and directions for use, a pound of fudge with

T h e B a v a r i a n Vi l l a g e o f Leavenworth is one of the best known, best loved tourist destinations on the West Coast. Visitors love the story of the small eastern Washington town which reversed a pattern of decline and recreated its downtown into the vibrant, unique streetscape which you see today. However, as remarkable as that story is, it’s only one of many stories which Leavenworth has to tell. To fully understand and appreciate the uniqueness of this place, you are encouraged to visit to the Upper Valley Museum at Leavenworth. The Museum is pleased and proud to announce the opening of its newly renovated Exhibit Room in March, 2013. A partnership with the Wenatchee Valley Museum and Cultural Center and generous financial support from the Icicle Fund, City of Leavenworth, Chelan County, Community Foundation of North Central Washington, Projekt Bayern, and Leavenworth’s downtown merchants has resulted in a series of completely new exhibits. Archival photographs, unique artifacts, and well researched, insightful text describe the interplay of a stunning natural setting with an evolving community. Learn about
Leavenworth’s first residents, the Wenatchi people, and how this place helped sustain their way of life. Follow the efforts of early explorers and settlers, drawn by the lure of timber, minerals, rich farmland and jobs related to the railroad. Become acquainted with people who played a major role in Leavenworth’s development, including Captain Charles F. Leavenworth, founder of the town, as well as the well loved Dr. Hoxey and colorful sheriff Dude Brown. Leavenworth’s economy had its ups and downs over the years, and this story is given perspective in the Musuem’s new exhibits. Lastly, the story is told of how people here joined together to revitalize their community, beginning in the early 1960s and continuing through today. Artifacts on display include a rare and unique collection of artifacts that were personal possessions of Captain Charles F. Leavenworth, the man who gave the town its name. These items include a highly ornate ceremonial Masonic Lodge sword, with Captain Leavenworth’s name engraved on both the blade and scabbard. Other treasures include Captain Leavenworth’s 140 year old surveyor’s transit and wooden tripod stand, his silver pocket watch and a daily diary in his own handwriting.

Leavenworth’s Museum is located on the stunningly beautiful grounds of Barn Beach Reserve, in the historically significant River Haus. This 110 year old home has stories of its own to tell, stories which parallel that of Leavenworth itself. The house was originally built to serve as a summer home for the owners
guaranteed longevity, restaurant menus, local paintings and photographs of Leavenworth’s past and present provide a complete history of the fish hatcheries, plus several wine bottles from local wineries. Also included are personal biographies and personal items reflecting the style of living at this time. The 2,200-pound concrete vault is airtight and contains a collection of 44 items reflecting historical information about Leavenworth’s first 100 years. Care was taken to ensure timedecay prevention by transcribing current CD and DVD disks to archival disks that last 300 years. Care was taken to provide players with electrical connections and all paper donations are individually sealed in air tight archival envelopes to ensure time survival.
of the Lamb-Davis Lumber Mill, and for decades was owned by the town’s banker, R.B.Field. For a time it was owned by Ted Price, who played a key role in development of the town’s Bavarian theme, and for many years served as a bed and breakfast. Today, River Haus is the home of the Upper Valley Museum and Icicle Arts. You are invited to visit this house, absorb the outstanding views of mountains and river, and gain a deeper insight into Leavenworth’s fascinating history by strolling through our newly renovated Exhibit Room.

B avarian M agic Volunteers Create Bavarian Theme Leavenworth’s magic wouldn’t be possible without the hard work and dedication of an incredibly diverse group of people and organizations. In order to make sure that the magic never dies in our Bavarian Village, these people and organizations spend thousands of hours each year to make sure it all comes together. As always, it’s impossible to give all the credit where it’s due, but these select groups are truly the foundation of our village.
Royal Bavarians About 1972 a small group of men started meeting at what is now the Tumwater Inn to discuss how they could more formally support the goowill of the Bavarian Village of Leavenworth. About 1974, the Royal Bavarians were formed and recogized by the city of Leavenworth as the official hosts of the city. Orgiginal members were W. Owen Watson (first Kanzler in 1974), Lynn I. Watson, Lenard Smith, Wilfred Davy, Bill Garrett and Dick Stroup. Of the orginal six, two are still active members. The Royal Bavarians is a nonprofit organization and are registered with the state of Washington. They are active members of the Northwest Festival Hosting Group Association and follow their rules. The Royal Bavarians are the official hosts and greeters of guests in the city of Leavenworth. Their mission is to support the Washinton State Autumn Leaf Festival and escort the float to the various parades, especially those hosted by members of the Northwest Festival Hosting Group Association, assist the Royal Lady of the Autumn Leaves, support the Leavenworth Chamber of Commerce in their functions, twice a year clean a two mile stretch of U.S. Highway 2 in the Tumwater Canyon under the Adopt-a-Highway program and host our outof-town guests and festival VIPs at the Enzian Inn for the entire weekend of the Washington State Autumn Leaf Festival. Being a Royal Bavarian means being an ambassador for the Leavenworth community both home and away.
38
Autumn Leaf Festival Association In a town known for its festivals, the Autumn Leaf Festival is the “granddaddy of them all.” Royal Bavarians board members. In 1962, Leavenworth began its transformation to a facsimile of a Bavarian village. In 1964, the first Autumn Leaf Festival occurred… the original Leavenworth festival. Ever since that beginning, Leavenworth has celebrated the beauty of the fall season with an Autumn Leaf Festival. It’s still going strong after 50 years as we celebrate our golden anniversary. The Autumn Leaf Festival Association (ALFA) is the volunteer group that is responsible for putting on the festival in Leavenworth. Besides hosting the thousands of visitors who come every last weekend in September to view the Grand Parade (Leav- Autumn Leaf Festival Association members. enworth’s largest and one of the largest in the state) and to enjoy the beautiful fall weather, entertainment, and festive atmosphere, the ALFA organization also builds a float for the parade. That float, representing Leavenworth, is then taken to parades in cities and towns throughout the Pacific Northwest and Canada. If one has a float, one needs a queen of course. Just as the Autumn Leaf Festival is unique, so too is its queen. In Leavenworth’s case she is known as the Royal Lady of the Autumn Leaves and is chosen each March to reign over the festival the following fall. One of the things that makes her unique is that she is to be a “mature” lady (meaning over Musikkapelle, Leavenworth's hometown band. 50). The selection of the Royal Lady is a closely guarded secret only revealed at the annual gala dinner in March. Leavenworth welcomes floats and groups from all hosting cities including those in Oregon and Canada as well as Washington. Sonnenschein auf Leavenworth • 2013-2014

Find Karl
Kids, young and old, we need your help to find Karl, the oldest and biggest nutcracker at the Leavenworth Nutcracker Museum. Karl is kind of lost, and is wandering around the pages of the Sonnenschein. We need your help to find him before the other nutcrackers get worried. Can you find Karl? He is on at least 12 pages, including this one. Find the Karls in this guide and receive a "Find Karl" souvenir pin at the museum or the Leavenworth Echo! Karl’s image is used with permission of the Leavenworth Nutcracker Museum.
Teeing off at the Leavenworth Golf Course.
