The Derby win ne pictured on pa rs are ge 17

Alexandrians dominate Resorters Derby Jesse Hafdal topped the field of 33 in the annual event Call it home field advantage. Alexandria golfers claimed four of the five top spots in the 2010 Resorters Golf Tournament Derby Tuesday night. The big winner was Jesse Hafdal, 20, of Alexandria, who outlasted a field of 33 contestants to claim the top prize. Derby host Brian Vangsness made the golfers work for their glory. The players’ first obstacle on the first hole was trying to hit the ball while on their knees. Those with the best scores were allowed to advance and two additional golfers were given a second chance in a playoff. This time, the players had to hit the ball with their backs turned to the hole and with their left hand on the left side of their body. The

two that made it closest to the hole were also allowed to advance. The next task was to hit the ball from behind a tee, through a narrow passage of trees in deep grass up a slope. Those who advanced were then blindfolded with a towel when trying to make it to the next hole. The playoff after this task was to hit the golf ball with a racquet. The final challenge: The competitors were spun around in circles while keeping their foreheads pressed against a baseball bat. The players had 10 seconds to collect themselves and hit the ball after the bat spin. In addition to Hafdal, the other Derby winners were Casey Vangsness of Alexandria, second place; Grant Hanson of Cottage Grove, third place; Bennett Black of Alexandria, fourth place; and Chris Sholts of Alexandria in fifth place.

It was all fun and games – and a bit of skill – during the annual Resorters Golf Tournament Derby last night. The host of the event, Brian Vangsness (above), enjoyed blindfolding the players with a towel while they tried to tee off from one of the holes. The Derby began with a challenge that brought the competitors to their knees while trying to swing the club from the No. 1 tee. Another fun Resorters tradition – the Putting Tournament – will take place at 6 p.m. tonight on the Alexandria Golf Club practice green. Golfers can register for the event up to the time the putting starts. The participants will be gunning for Tyler Whiting of Alexandria, who has won the single-elimination event for the last two years.

Defending champ upended Nick Heinen was topped by Matthew Bennett in opening round of Juniors’ 13-15 The upset of the first day came in the Junior 13-15 Division when Marshall’s Matthew Bennett took down defending champion Nick Heinen of Edmond, Oklahoma. That means there will be a new champion as the field now looks wide open. Alexandria’s Brandon Bistodeau will have a chance after beating Hunter Bruhn of Buffalo, 3-2. Tommy Brandabur could be the biggest beneficiary of Heinen’s loss. The Minnetrista native shot the low round in qualifying with a 70 before backing that up with 4-3 win over Morris’ Jordan Kolden. Nick Brundell of Alexandria will battle Brandabur for a spot in the final four after Brundell earned a 4-3 win over fellow

Alexandria resident John Vogeler. Austin McCulloch and Grady Meyer each earned 4-3 wins over their first-round opponents, as well. McCulloch took down Alexandria’s Lukas Bigger, while Meyer beat Maple Grove’s Nicholas Adams to advance. The two will now battle each other for a spot in the semifinals when they tee off the 10th tee box at 9:06 this morning. The narrowest victories in the division came from St. Cloud’s Mitch Freeman and Elk River’s Garrett Turnacliff as both players won 1-up. Freeman took a two-hole lead into the turn and held on late to upend Matt Ostdiek of Lakeville. Ostdiek tried to rebound as he took the first two holes on the back to break even. That’s how things stood after 13 before Freeman took Nos. 14 and 16 with pars. Ostdiek won with a par on No. 17, but Freeman held on as both players parred No. 18. Turnacliff had to hold

Defending champ faced tough competition in Juniors’ 13-15 Division Tuesday Defending Junior Division champion Nick Heinen had his hands full after a couple of low qualifying rounds proved that there was plenty of talent to go around in the Junior 1315 Division. Tommy Brandabur of Minnetrista went out and proved to be the best of a group that had

nine players shoot in the 70s. Brandabur carded a 70 to earn medalist honors. Garrett Turnacliff of Elk River wasn’t far behind with a 72. Heinen, of Edmond, Oklahoma, did not shoot a qualifying round after guaranteeing himself of a spot in the championship flight with his win last year.

Alexandria’s Maggie Leland and Minnewaska’s Sarah Roering shared the stage as the two competed for Team Minnesota in the 2010 Minnesota-Wisconsin PGA Junior Cup Matches in Eau Claire. The two seniors, both state champions this year, weren’t the only big name golfers on the girls’ team as Class AAA players Betsy Kelly of Forest Lake (4th), McKenzie Neisen of New Prague (2nd), Steffi Neisen of New Prague (5th), Mary Sweeney of Woodbury (9th), Taylor Wells of Rochester (47th) and Class AA players Anna Laorr of Breck (3rd), Jordan Price of Byron (4th) and Alyssa Kalthoff of Albany (12th), along with North Dakota’s Liz Strom of Shanley (2nd in Class A) were also on the star-stud-

ded list of competitors. Leland and Roering dropped their fourball match to Jenna Peters of Kohler, Wisconsin and Erika Pfaender of Pewaukee, Wisconsin 1-up on day. Minnesota, however, won the overall fourball match competition 7-5. On day two, Roering picked up a 5and-4 win over Pfaender, with Leland falling to Lisbeth Brooks of Waunakee, Wisconsin 4-and-3 as Minnesota dropped the singles matches battle 14-10 and fell short in total team points to Wisconsin 19-17. This is a border battle between the top 24 high school players from the Minnesota section and the Wisconsin section, using a Ryder Cup team format.

Wagner grabs medalist honors in Executive Men’s Division Defending champ gets free pass into championship flight for today Todd Wagner of Austin, Texas played like someone who has every intention of contending for an Executive Division title during his qualifying round on Monday. Wagner shot a fourunder 68 and hopes to carry the momentum of that round into his match with Alexandria’s Donnacha O’Connor, who shot an 85 in qualifying. Anyone who hopes to hoist the Executive Division trophy at the end of the week will have to go through defending champion Stefan Freeman of St. Cloud. Freeman chose

EXECUTIVE MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP UPPER BRACKET

not to shoot a qualifying round after he secured his spot in the championship flight with a 1-up win over his brother, Jon Freeman, in 19 holes last year. Jon is also back this year after shooting a 73 on Monday. Alexandria’s Chris Haugen posted a strong score to lead a pack of seven Alexandria golfers who made the cut for the championship flight. Haugen shot a 71, while Dave Dilley, Bill Freeman, Brian Eidsvold and Jeff Bigger all carded 76s. The Execs tee off on the 10th box today, starting at noon with Freeman taking on John Gardiner and Steve Klongerbo battling Steve Tax in the first foursome. EXECUTIVES

The Worldʼs Longest Golf Course is the International Golf Club in Massachusetts, a long par 77, 8325-yards, from the tiger tees. The Worldʼs Highest Golf Course is the Tactu Golf Club in Morococha, Peru, which sits 14,335 feet above sea level at its lowest point. The Longest Hole in the World is the 7th hole (par 7) of the Sano Course at the Satsuki Golf Club in Japan. It measures a long 909 yards. The Worldʼs Largest Bunker is Hellʼs Half Acre on the 585-yard 7th hole of the Pine Valley Course in New Jersey. The Worldʼs Largest Green is that of the 695-yard, 5th hole, a par 6 at the International Golf Club in Massachusetts, with an area in excess of 28,000 square feet. When the golfer feels the ball make impact with the driver face, the ball has already been hit and is actually 14 inches away on its trip down the fairway. No matter how fast you may think the bodyʼs neurons and brain can process information, the impact between the driver and the ball is much faster! What this means also is that if you have a golfer who likes to feel the ball on the face to ʻwork the ball,ʼ that golfer better move quick! Balls travel significantly farther on hot days. The ball velocity, launch angle and backspin amount will NOT change as temperature increases or decreases, but a golfer with a 100mph swing speed will carry the driver eight yards longer for each increase in air temperature of 25°F. Changing a driverʼs face angle 1 degree changes shot direction by 5 yards. At a carry distance of 200 yards and all other swing factors being equal, changing a driverʼs face angle by 1 degree results in a side-to-side change in shot direction of five yards. This is the main reason face angle is such a powerful fitting aid for accuracy improvement. There is no such thing as over spin on a golf ball at the moment of impact. Even when using a putter, the ball leaves the clubface with some backspin. Only when the ball settles on the ground and begins rolling will the backspin reverse and turn into over spin. The driver swing speed of an average lady golfer is 62mph; 96mph for an average LPGA professional; 84mph for an average male golfer; 108mph for an average PGA Tour player; 130mph for Tiger Woods; 148-

152mph for a national long drive champion. The next time you hear someone say professional golfers are not athletes, clue them in on this. 1 mph of swing speed increase = 1.5mph of ball velocity increase = 3 yards of carry distance increase. Golf buffs may cry “Sacrilege!”, but thereʼs an alternative version of the game in existence. Invented in 1989, Golfcross uses big suspended nets instead of holes, and the balls are oval – like golf balls crossed with eggs. There are dedicated courses from New Zealand to the UK, if youʼre feeling adventurous. Thereʼs a long-standing myth that the word “golf” is an acronym of Gentlemen Only, Ladies Forbidden. Which is amusing, but unfortunately complete rubbish. The word actually stems from original 15th Century spellings that included “gouf”, “goulf”, “goiff” and “gouff” (indecisive lot, 15th Century Scots). Golf was actually outlawed in Scotland in 1457. James II was the killjoy behind the ban – he was preparing for an English invasion and wanted his citizens to concentrate on useful hobbies like archery. The ban was eventually lifted quite some time later, in 1502. Ever wondered where the golfing term “birdie” comes from? It seems we have an American named Ab Smith to thank. While striding around a course in 1899, he played what he described as a “bird of a shot”, which became “birdie” over time. (“Bird” was 19th American slang for anything really, really good. Kind of like “cool” is for us.)
Dormie, the golf jargon word referring to a player decisively leading a game, comes from “dormir”, a word of shared French and Latin origin which means “to sleep”. In other words, the playerʼs so far in front he can afford to sleep.

There are 336 dimples on a regulation golf ball. The longest putt in history was measured at 140 feet and 2 3/4 inches on the 18th hole at St. Andrewʼs golf course. It was shot by Bob Cook on October 1, 1976. There are approximately 11,000 golf courses in North America. There are more than 50 million golfers in the world. Americans spend more than $600 million on golf balls every year.

Men’s Division includes three champs, three sibling rivalries, 13 young guns And they’re off! Thirty-two hopefuls in the Resorters Men’s Championship Division will begin match play today at high noon from the No. 1 tee. It promises to be an exciting shootout with plenty of young guns (13 are still in their teens), three former champions (Jim Lehman Jr. back from last year, the 2008 champ Tyler Whiting, and Jack Dressen, a 2004 titlist in the Junior Division), and 11 golfers who call the Alexandria area home. The field includes three local pairs of brothers – the Blacks (Bennett and Bryant), the Hafdals (Jesse and Jordan) and the Whitings (Tyler and Derrick). Besides Lehman, a few other crafty Resorters veterans

made the cut again, including Geoff Klein of Mankato and Eric Peterson of Benson. The qualifying was tougher this year. Golfers not only had to contend with the heat and humidity on the course but also the blistering pace of play. It took a 75 round to qualify – three strokes better than last year’s 78 mark. This year’s medalist is Tyler Whiting, who carded a 67.

Alex Woodhull

Tyler Whiting is Men’s medalist Air Force officer-intraining flies high with 67 round Tyler Whiting of Alexandria has hardly golfed this summer. He’s been down in Alabama completing Air Force officer training. In fact, the 23-year-old hadn’t even picked up a club until two weeks ago but his golf game is still flying high. Whiting, the 2008 Resorters Men’s Division champion, fired a 67 during

qualifying to earn medalist honors. He did it with three birdies on the front nine, beginning with a dazzling 50-foot putt from the bottom of the green on No. 3. Two other early birdies, on Nos. 6 and 9, were offset by only one miscue, a bogey on No. 8, to put him 2-under at the turn. Whiting played the back nine just as consistently, carding three birdies on Nos. 14, 15 and 18 and shooting nothing but pars on the rest of the holes. As good as his 5-under par qualifying round was, he’s done better. He’s shot a 66 in the Resorters before. Whiting said he was hit-

ting the ball straight off the driver but it was his putting that made the difference. Whiting has two brothers golfing in this year’s Resorters – an occasion that hasn’t happened in at least a decade, he said. Derrick also qualified for the championship bracket with a 74 while Jason’s qualifying round of 80 placed him in the third flight. Whiting’s 67 was one off last year’s pace, a 66 shot by another Alexandrian, Bryce Hanstad, the 2007 champion in the division, who was eliminated in last year’s quarterfinals.

Straight away, but fairway drops sharply. Tree-filled roughs can create a lot of problems.

Elevated tee, elevated green with a dipsydoodle in between. Cavernous bunkers left and right protect the “Texas” green.

A relatively short, but dangerous finishing hole. Out-of-bounds on right and thick wooded area left make accurate tee shots crucial.

You’re a neighbor, not a number. No one takes care of you like a State Farm Agent.

New champ guaranteed in Masters Clayton Pike leads the way in qualifying for Masters’ Division The absence of sixtime defending Masters champion Ron Clayton opened up the door for plenty of other golfers to earn medalist honors heading into the first round of match play today. Clayton Pike of Billings, Montana seized that opportunity on Monday when he carded a 76 to edge a group of seven players separated by just three shots. Plenty of Alexandria residents are in the running to hoist the Masters trophy at the end of the week. Jack Mathiasen finished qualifying just one shot

CHIP SHOTS If only they made a golf ball that floats: The top brand of golf balls regularly played: Titleist (29 percent), Top Flite (12), Wilson and Maxfli (7 apiece), Precept (6) and others (40).

Ping as in ca-ching: The top five club manufacturers played with on a regular basis: Ping (20 percent), Callaway (16), Taylor Made (13), Titleist and Wilson (8 apiece).

Playing by the honor system: Bob Brue, on the future of the Senior Tour: “In 30 years we’re going to be in our 90s. We will play three-hole tournaments for $900,000, and the one who remembers his score wins.”

Who said it was a non-contact sport? In 1934, Bobby Cruickshank literally knocked himself out of a chance tow in the U.S. Open. On the 64th hole at Merion Cricket Club, his poor approach hit a rock and bounced onto the green. Elated, he threw his club into the air – it landed on his head and knocked him out.

Tip your hat to these Derby winners The winners of the 2010 Resorters Derby played Tuesday night at the Alexandria Golf Club were (left to right) Jesse Hafdal in first place, Casey Vangsness in second, Grant Hanson in third, Bennett Black in fourth and Chris Sholts in fifth.

Defending champ, two more titlists make the cut Maggie Leland, Betsy Aldrich and Connie Sornsin are in the women’s championship Defending champion Maggie Leland of Alexandria is hoping to win her third Women’s Division title in the Resorters Golf Tournament, and if her qualifying round is any indication, she’s on the right track. Leland, who won the title last year and in 2007, shot a 1-underpar 71 during the qualifying round, tying Betsy Aldrich of St. Louis Park for medalist honors. Aldrich is one of several talented players in the championship flight, having won the Women’s Division crown in 2003 and 2008. She also is the

Executive Women’s Division champion (not being held this year) from 2007. Connie Sornsin of Goodyear, Arizona is also among the players to reach the championship flight. She claimed Women’s Division titles in 2002 and 2004. Leland, the State Class AAA champion, is not the only Alexandrian to qualify as sister, Molly, also made the cut, along with Lauren Johnson, Brynn Novotny and Maxine Carlson. Glenwood’s Sarah Roering, the 2010 State Class AA co-champion, is among the qualifiers as well, having shot an even-par 72. The women take to the tee today, Wednesday, at 1:48 p.m. from the No. 1 teebox.

Defending champ gets bye through first round Jon Empanger’s opponent did not play yesterday, giving the Chaska golfer a free pass into today’s action A defending champion has never had as easy of a time advancing past the first round of match play as Chaska’s Jon Empanger did yesterday afternoon. The six-time champion (five executive titles, one senior title) was slated to play Apple Valley’s Todd McNamara in the first group to tee off at noon. The only problem was McNamara never showed up. Empanger used the day as another practice round as he advanced to the second day by forfeit. That was just part of an exciting first day of match play in the Senior Division. Three of the 16 matches were not decided until the 18th, and three more needing

Mark Matanich

Seashore edged Klick in 20 holes. The Senior Division will kick off its action at 1:12 this afternoon from the first tee.

Kiger def. Tessmer, 19 holes This back-and-forth battle between Alexandria’s Burke Kiger and Hood River, Oregon’s Steve Tessmer wasn’t decided until Kiger finally put Tessmer away on the 19th hole. Kiger built a one-hole advantage after three with a birdie. That was the first of three straight holes he took before Tessmer got one back with a birdie on the par-five sixth. The two-hole lead for Kiger after that was the biggest lead he would hold for the rest of the day. Tessmer stuck with him with a par win on No. 9 to head into the turn down by just one. It didn’t take him long to even things up on the back. His par on No. 10 was good for a win after Kiger doubled. They halved the next two holes before Kiger broke through again with a par win on No. 13. Tessmer got that back with a par win of his own on 15. The two halved the remaining three holes in regulation before Kiger lived to play another day by winning the first playoff hole. Ledebuhr def. Hanson, 3-2 Roger Ledebuhr of Eden Prairie used three strong holes on the back to overcome Alexandria’s Brad Hanson in what was a very close match up to that point. Neither player led by

more than one hole until Ledebuhr parred no. 15 to go up by two with three to play. He then birdied No. 16 to end the match. He stayed close enough on the front to make the charge on the back. Hanson led by one going into the turn, but Ledebuhr won Nos. 10 and 11 to take his first lead of the day. Hanson never led again as Ledebuhr finished strong to finish him off. Zinn def. Schenkelberg, 1-up Byron Zinn of Spicewood, Texas came a long ways to play in the Resorters and he survived a close match against Brooklyn Park’s Al Schenkelberg to live to play another day. Neither player led by more than one hole after No. 6. The two went back-and-forth on the back, with Schenkelberg parring No. 11 before Zinn did the same on No. 12 to move back to one up. Again, Schenkelberg parred No. 14 for a win before Zinn answered right back with a par win on 15. The proved to be enough as both players bogeyed No. 16 before parring Nos. 17 and 18. Blanchard def. Brabant, 3-2 Burnsville resident Norty Blanchard took a four-hole lead over Maple Lake’s Bob Brabant through the first six holes and never looked back in a 3-2 win on Tuesday afternoon. Blanchard was steady after bogeying the first hole as he got par wins

Don Mehesan of Alexandria blasted out of the sand near the No. 5 green during his opening round match against Allan Pint in the Senior Men’s Championship yesterday. Mehesan advanced into today’s second round with a 5-4 victory.

on Nos. 2 and 4 before back-to-back birdies on five and six gave him a nice cushion. Brabant cut that lead to three with a birdie on No. 9, but Blanchard was just too much down the stretch. He birdied Nos. 10 and 14 before a bogey on No. 16 was good enough tie the hole and take the match with two left to play. Matanich def. Strassburg, 19 holes Mark Matanich of Lake City used a birdie on the first playoff hole to put away Clear Lake’s Al Strassburg in a close match. Matanich birdied the first two holes on the back to go two up after the two were even at the turn. The two bogeyed the next two holes before Strassburg broke through with a birdie on the par-five 14th. He then used a par win on 16 to even things up with two to go. A bogey and a par by both brought them into extra holes, where Strassburg took care of business early to secure the win. Mehesan def. Pint, 5-4 Alexandria’s Don Mehesan turned an early one-hole deficit into a two-hole lead by the turn. He never looked back from there as he finished off Brooklyn Park’s Allan Pint with a birdie on the 14th. Pint struggled to get much of anything going on the day as three doubles SENIORS

Empanger leads Senior qualifiers Some things remain the same as defending Senior Men’s Division champ Jon Empanger returns for a shot at his second consecutive title in this division. He showed that he was in fine form as he grabbed medalist honors during qualifying with an even-par 72. The Chaska golfer also won the Executive title in 1993, 1997, 2004, 2007 and 2008. Empanger will have former Executive Division champion (1998, 2001) Joe Klick of Albert Lea in his field for the championship flight after Klick qualified with an 83 on Monday. Jeff Pederson of Haymarket, Virginia was Empanger’s closest competitor during their qualifying round. Pederson shot a 74, while Michael Flesch of Neenah, Wisconsin and Norty Blanchard of Burnsville carded 75s. The Senior Division was well represented by local golfers heading into yesterday’s first round of match play. Six Alexandria residents made the field of 32, with Don Mehesan and Brad Hanson qualifying

SENIORS from Page 20 and a triple accounted for wins on three holes for Mehesan. Arnold def. Kulow, 4-3 Jim Arnold of Plymouth overcame a rough patch in the middle of the front nine to take down Marshall’s Tim Kulow through 15. Kulow turned a two-hole deficit into a one-hole lead with three straight wins on Nos. 5, 6 and 7. Arnold bogeyed all three of those holes but played even through six holes on the back to take back control of the match. His par wins on Nos. 14 and 15 gave him the victory. Pederson def. Golden, 43 Haymarket, Virginia’s Jeff Pederson used two birdies and a par on the back to pick up wins and secure a 4-3 victory over Alexandria’s Mike Golden. Pederson led by at least two through the back after winning Nos. 7 and 8 with pars. Golden took just one hole after that, a par win on No. 14, as he shot five over through seven holes after the turn. Fluegel def. Hartmann, 3-2 Alexandria attorney Mike Fluegel made his case after the 7th hole: No more wins for his opponent, Mike Hartmann of Red Wing. Fluegel took the first lead with a birdie on No. 2 but Hartmann countered with a

par win on the next hole. Fluegel got back in front with another birdie win on No. 6, only to drop the next hole to Hartmann’s par. That’s when Fluegel laid down the law. He won Nos. 8 and 9 and with pars, matched Hartmann’s pars on the next four holes and then struck for a birdie on No. 14 to go 3-up. Both golfers shot nothing but pars on the next two holes. Case closed – a 3-2 win for Fluegel. Mattson def. Dibble, 7-6 A fast start powered Greg Mattson of Becker to a quick win over L. Thomas Dibble of Bloomington. Mattson won the first hole with a birdie and his pars on the next four holes put him comfortably out front, 5-up. Dibble matched Mattson’s par on No. 6 to stop the bleeding but couldn’t do any better than pars on the next three holes to remain trailing by five at the turn. Mattson didn’t dilly-dally. He won Nos. 10 and 12 with par, birdie to close out the match, 7-6. Falls def. McFarlane, 1-up Bob Falls of Edina never trailed in his match against Alexandria’s Dave McFarlane but it still took him 18 grueling holes to ice the win. Falls won No. 1 with birdie but McFarlane answered with a birdie win on the next hole.

Falls came right back with a par win on No. 3 and went 2-up with a par win on No. 4. McFarlane cut into the lead with a par win on the par-3 No. 7 but Falls’ bogey was good enough to take the 9th hole, putting him 2-up at the turn. McFarlane again drew to within one with a par win on No. 10 but his bogey on No. 12 dropped him two back. The rollercoaster match continued with McFarlane winning No. 13 with par and Falls taking No. 14 with par. The next two holes were stalemates and then McFarlane forced another hole with a par on No. 17 to draw within one. The match ended in bogeys on the 18th green. Flesch def. Lende, 1-up Mike Flesch of Neenah, Wisconsin held off a late flurry from Roy Lende of Livingston, Montana to claim a 1-up win. Lende jumped out to the early lead with wins on Nos. 1 and 3. Flesch didn’t cave in, however, and lashed back with three straight par wins on Nos. 4, 5 and 6 to steal the lead. He padded his advantage to two with a par win on No. 8 but Lende took No. 9 to trail by just one at the turn. Flesch’s pars were good enough to win the next two holes and, up by three, he was poised for a quick win. But Lende fought back. He

Good Luck to all Resorters Participants!

won Nos. 12, 14 and 15 to deadlock the match. Flesch earned a key par win on No. 16 to regain the lead and it held when both golfers parred the final two holes. Petersen def. Anderson, 3-2 Dave Anderson of Eden Prairie battled tooth-andnail against Larry Petersen of Albert Lea in the front nine. Anderson won three holes – Nos. 2, 4 and 7 with pars – while Petersen also won three holes, Nos. 1, 8 and 9 with three birdies. All square at the turn, Petersen prevailed on the back nine. He won No. 10 with birdie, matched Anderson stroke for stroke on the next four holes and then went 2-up with a par win on No. 15. Petersen closed out the match in a style – a birdie win on No. 16 that gave him a 3-2 victory. Seashore def. Klick, 20 holes Seashore almost saw a four-hole lead after 11 disappear as Klick made a late charge to force extra holes. Seashore was 3-up with three left to play when he ran into a little trouble. He bogeyed Nos. 16 and 18 and sandwiched a par between them on 17. That opened the door for Klick, and he took advantage, parring Nos. 16 and 18, while birdying the

par-3 17th. That completed the comeback as Seashore was forced to win it in extras. After both men parred the first extra hole, Seashore put Klick away on the 20th hole to advance. Both golfers played solid golf. Seashore shot even par for the day while Klick was 2-over. Vipond def. Johnson, 5-4 Tom Vipond of Woodstock, Georgia didn’t waste time against Randy Johnson of Marshall. Vipond won the first two holes with bogey, par and notched a trio of wins on Nos. 5, 6 and 7 with bogey, par, par to go 4-up. Johnson stopped the assault with a par win on No. 8 but still trailed by four at the turn. Vipond’s par was good enough to win the 10th hole and he coasted from there, matching Johnson’s pars and bogeys on the next four holes to seal a 5-4 victory.
