RESORTERS Golf Tournament

ThursDAY,

AUG. 5, 2010

The Senior Div ision results elicited a variety of reactions. Pa ge 8

Dozens of golfers descended on the Alexandria Golf Club’s practice putting green to get in a few practice putts before the tournament began Wednesday night. The annual event is open, for a fee, to all competitors who enter the Resorters Golf Tournament.

Same last name, different brothers Vangsness, Black and Whiting take top honors in putting contest Last year, three of the final four competitors in the Resorters Putting Tournament included a Vangsness, a Black and a Whiting. Ditto for this year. But this time, different brothers took home the prizes. Instead of Casey Vangsness, Bryant Black and Tyler Whiting, the big winners were Ben Vangsness (first place), Bennett Black (second) and Derrick Whiting (third). Rounding out the top four was 13-yearold Peter Dierks of Leawood, Kansas. They outlasted a field of 64 contestants who showed off their putting talents at the Alexandria Golf Club’s

practice green Wednesday night. The putting was fast, furious and deadly as the single-elimination tournament narrowed down to the final four. Vangsness’ big win snapped a two-year winning streak held by

Tyler Whiting. Gift certificate prizes redeemable at the AGC pro shop ranging from $75 to $150 were awarded to the winners. As has proved to be the case in past tournaments, local golfers seem to hold an edge

Junior 10-12s down to final four Medalist, one Alexandrian still in the hunt

Alexandria’s Blake Bloedorn had to shoot his way out of the sand on the back yesterday. Bloedorn saw his title hopes come to an end after Chaska’s Lincoln Johnson picked up a 3-1 win to advance to the semifinals of the Junior 10-12 Division.

Medalist Sam Franklin of Maple Grove survived the opening round of the first Junior 10-12 Division championship flight Wednesday, defeating Andrew Lindberg of Coppell, Texas 5-3 to advance to tomorrow’s semifinal round. Alexandrians Grant Zwilling and Blake Bloedorn split their success as Zwilling defeated Jack Dierks of Leawood, Kansas, 2-1, while Bloedorn fell to Lincoln Johnson of Chaska 3-1. Logan Dube´ of Hastings was the final winner as he downed Christopher Adams of Maple Grove 1-up in 10 holes. Action for the 10-12 Division begins Friday at 9:36 a.m. on the 10th tee. Franklin downs Lindberg Franklin leaped to an early lead over the Texas golfer, winning the first two holes of the back nine on bogeys before Lindberg cut that deficit with a double bogey victory on No. 13. Franklin, however, was not happy to give away that hole, and came back with three

straight wins on par, par and double bogey to take the match 5-3. Dube´ edges Adams It took Dube´ an extra hole before he emerged with a win as the two battled back and forth. Dube´ went three up after the first three holes, but Adams slowly chipped away at that advantage, bringing the match back to even on No. 15. Dube´ grabbed the advantage on No. 16, holding it until 18, when Adams once again tied things up. On the first extra hole, neither player was able to get it done with pars, but Dube´ came away with the win to advance to Friday’s round. Johnson tops Bloedorn The Chaska golfer was the early leader in this match, earning a bogey win on No. 10, but Bloedorn evened things out with his own win on a bogey at 11. From there, Johnson won holes 13, 15 and 17 to end the match with a 3-1 victory. Zwilling defeats Dierks Both golfers began their match with equal play on No. 9, but Dierks JUNIOR 10-12 Page??

Only four remain Bennett, Meyer, Brandabur and Freeman take to the tee at Friday at noon Marshall’s Matthew Bennett continued to roll through the Junior 13-15 Division after being the last one to make the championship flight out of qualifying. Bennett shot an 82 on

Monday but has proven over the last two days that anything can happen in match play. One day after upending defending champion Nick Heinen 3-2, Bennett took care of

Alexandria’s Brandon Bistodeau in a tight 2-1 match. He’ll have a chance to play himself into the division finals if he can overcome Grady Meyer today when the final four 13-15 year old

Matthew Bennett pulled off another win yesterday after upsetting defending champion Nick Heinen on Tuesday. The Marshall product is playing some good golf as he beat Alexandria’s Brandon Bistodeau 2-1 to advance to the semifinals in the Juniors 13-15 Division.

juniors tee off on No. 1 at noon. Meyer def. McCulloch, 4-2 Meyer played a steady round of golf and just waited for his opponent to make bogeys yesterday morning as he handed Alexandria’s Austin McCulloch a 4-2 loss. Meyer was on his game from the get-go after teeing off on the 10th tee. He played the back at even par with the help of a couple birdies on both par 5s. That helped him make the turn with a threehole lead. McCulloch cut it to two after a par win on No. 1. Meyer was just too much, though, as he birdied No. 3 and got a bogey win on the par 3 seventh to wrap up the match with two to go. Brandabur def. Brundell, 2-1 Division medalist Tommy Brandabur built a five-hole lead at one point before holding on for a 2-1 win in a round that saw the Minnetrista native card five birdies against Alexandria’s Nick Brundell. a bit of a rough first five holes to win four straight before heading onto the front. Brundell led by a hole after a birdie win on No. 14, but Brandabur finished off the back at two under, birdying Nos. 16 and 18 to take back the momentum. He continued to blister the ball off the tee and grabbed two more birdie wins on Nos. 1 and 2 before Brundell answered with a birdie win on the third. He went on to make things fairly close, but Brandabur was too much in the end as another birdie put an end to the match on No. 8. Freeman def. A slip up on the 12th allowed Turnacliff to cut that lead in half with a bogey before Freeman began to run away with things the rest of the way. He got par wins on Nos. 14 and 16 before birdying 18 to take a commanding lead into the turn. Turnacliff got one back with a par on No. 2. It just wasn’t enough as Freeman picked up par wins on Nos. 5 and 6 to end things with three left to play. JUNIOR 13-15 DIVISION RESULTS WEDNESDAY Bennett def. Bistodeau, 2-1 Meyer def. Powerhouse field remains in Women’s Division The defending champ and her sister, a former titlist and a state champion remain alive Things are starting to get interesting in the Women’s Division. Maggie Leland, the defending champion and State Class AAA individual champ, and her sister, Molly, are both alive in the upper bracket for today’s championship flight, which opens on the first tee at 12:54 p.m. If Maggie can defeat Molly Noser of Rochester and Molly can defeat Amanda Woodhull of Minntonka, the two would face each other in tomorrow’s semifinal. In the lower bracket, Betsy Aldrich of St. Louis Park, who has two Women’s Division crowns to her name, as well as one from the Executive Women’s Division, ousted a former Women’s Division champion in Connie Sornsin of Goodyear, Arizona (2002, 2004). She is set to face Bridget Cummings of Chaska today, who

defeated Lauren Johnson of Alexandria. Glenwood’s Sarah Roering, the 2008 and 2010 State Class AA champion, earned a win over Alexandria’s Brynn Novonty and Heidi Beckendorf of Blaine downed another Alexandrian in Maxine Carlson. With those kind of powerhouse players still alive in the division, it’s shaping up to be an exciting finale. Maggie Leland def. Westerham A couple of bogeys were the only flaws in a nearly perfect round for the defending champion, who didn’t lose a single hole to her opponent in a 7-5 win yesterday. Leland got off to a spectacular start, birdying the first hole, then followed that up with a par win. The two split a pair of holes before Leland whipped out three straight holes with pars to go up five. From there the Augustana College signee added wins on Nos. 9, 12 and 13 to finish off a great start to her tournament play. Noser knocks off Todora It didn’t take long for

Noser to secure her win over Grace Todora of Woodbury, who was a no-show for her championship flight match. Noser played her match and birdied No. 7 along the way. Woodhull topples Lervick Woodhull saw her opponent, Brenna Lervick of Chanhassen, take the opening hole of their opening round match yesterday, but that was all the Minnetonka golfer would allow as she cruised to a 7-5 win. Woodhull proceeded to grab three straight holes with pars, then halving two and winning two of the final four of the front nine. She made the turn and proceeded on No. 10 with a birdie, putting up a par win, shared hole

and another par win to close out the match. Leland downs Dwyer Molly Leland was deliberate in her 5-4 win over Andrea Dwyer Wednesday, never faltering as she picked up wins on Nos. 3, 4, 9, 12 and 14 to move into today’s round. Both players were even after two holes, but a par on No. 3 got Leland started. She stayed 2-up until No. 9, when she gained another hole with a par win. The two golfers each parred the first two holes of the back nine, but a par win, followed by a halved hole, set Leland up for her final win to close out the match. Former champs collide

When two former Women’s Division champions face off, you know it will be interesting, and it was, as Alrich and Sornsin did battle in the opening round. Aldrich was the leader after a par win in the opening hole, but Sornsin quickly set things straight with a birdie victory on No. 2. But from there, Aldrich allowed the Goodyear, Arizona golfer just one win – that on No. 8 – as the two cruised through the next 11 holes, while picking up six of her own, all on pars, giving Aldrich a berth in today’s quarterfinal play with a 6-5 win. But after the two halved three holes, Cummings went on a run, starting with a birdie on No. 5 and taking seven straight holes for a 6-up lead. Johnson picked up her only other win of the match on No. 12, but with a par win on the following hole, Cummings closed the door on the match for a 6-5 win. as Beckendorf evened things up on No. 2, but Carlson came back for a 1up lead on No. 3. Two straight wins for Beckendorf gave her her first advantage of the night, but Carlson forced the match back to a tie with a par win on No. 6. A par for Beckendorf on the following hole gave her a 1-up lead, which would hold through the turn and No. 10. On the 11th and 12th holes, Beckendorf increased her lead to 3-up, finally closing out the match on No. 15 with a par win.

WOMEN from Page 6 Roering played par golf through the first nine holes, with the exception of a bogey on No. 7 and a birdie on No. 9, giving Roering a 5-up lead at the turn. She had won the first four holes to go up by four, then waited through a pair of shared holes, and a win by Novotny on No. 7 before rallying with two wins. On the back nine, Roering opened with a birdie to go up six, then saw Novotny return with a bogey win on the following hole. Novotny added a win on No. 13 with a bogey, but Roering closed out the match with a birdie on No. 15. Beckendorf tops Carlson With a 4-3 win, Beckendorf moved into today’s round. Carlson was the first to get the advantage, however, winning the first hole of play. From there, the two played back and forth golf

It didn’t take Empanger long to secure his first lead once he got there. He got par wins on Nos. 10 and 11 before birdying No. 14 to go three up. The two both parred the next two holes as Empanger held on for the win. Ledebuhr def. Zinn, 3-2 Another close match had Ledebuhr getting by Byron Zinn with a strong stretch of play on the back helping him move on to today’s play. The two went onto the back all squared up before Ledebuhr took his second lead of the day with a win at No. 11. He stretched that

lead to three holes with wins on 14 and 15 before the two halved No. 16 to end the match at 3-2. Blanchard def. Matanich, 6-4 Burnsville resident Norty Blanchard jumped out to a fourhole lead before Lake City’s Mark Matanich finally got on the board with a par on No. 7. By then, the tone had already been set by Blanchard. He took a three-shot lead into the turn and added to it with birdies on 10, 12 and 14 to secure the match, 6-4. Arnold def. Mehesan, 6-5 Jim Arnold of Plymouth dominated the front nine and coasted to a 6-5 win over Alexandria’s Don Mehesan. Arnold birdied the first and parred Nos. 2 and 3 to take a threehole lead before Mehesan got on the

board on No. 5. Arnold responded with four straight wins, including a birdie win on No. 8 to take a six-hole advantage onto the back. He added to that with a par win on No. 10 before Mehesan took No. 11 with a par. Arnold already had this one in the bag at that point as the two halved the next two holes and wrapped up the match. Fluegel def. Pederson, 24 holes Pederson came into match play as the second seed in the Senior Division after he qualified with a 74 earlier this week. Fluegel got the task of trying to knock him off and was up to the challenge on his home course. It didn’t come easy. Fluegel and Pederson battled into a sixth playoff hole before it finally ended. Mattson def. Falls, 4-3

Greg Mattson

Becker’s Greg Mattson used a dominating front nine performance to secure a 4-3 win over Bob Falls of Edina. Mattson posted pars on Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 5 and all of them were good for wins as he turned a one-hole deficit after one into a three-hole lead. Falls got one back on 6, but Mattson again picked up three straight par wins to take a commanding lead into the back. Falls didn’t give up. He cut a six-hole lead to four with a birdie on No. 14. It was just a little too late as the two halved No. 15 to end the match early. Peterson def. Flesch, 19 holes Larry Peterson of Albert Lea needed an extra hole to edge Neenah, Wisconsin’s Michael Flesch. Peterson trailed by two heading down the

stretch before a late rally forced extra holes. He got a par win on 14 before another par on 16 allowed him to tie things up. Both players carded bogeys on the following two holes before Peterson put the finishing touches on things on the first playoff hole. Seahsore def. Vipond, 3-2 Gene Seashore of Lakewood Ranch, Florida needed a strong performance on the back to secure the win over Woodstock, Georgia product Tom Vipond. Seashore pushed his lead to three with a birdie win on No. 11. Vipond responded with a win on 12, but two straight par wins by Seashore on Nos. 13 and 14 made things difficult for Vipond. He picked up a win on 15, but pars by both players on 16 ended things early for Seashore. SENIORS Page 17

Masters’ Division narrows Medalist Clayton Pike is still in the running for the title With the first round down, an Alexandrian, golfers from Arizona, Texas and Montana, and four other Minnesotans remain among the final players in the Masters’ Division for 2010. Leading the way was qualifying medalist Clayton Pike of Billings, Montana and four-time Senior champion George Cliff of Mankato, who both won their matches with 3-2 scores. They will lead Tom Hansen of Lakeville, Gary Obele of Becker, Tom Eidsvold of Alexandria, Steve Seavall of Spicewood, Texas, Dan Mohwinkel of Annandale and George Mikesh of Scottsdale, Arizona onto the first tee at noon today. Pike picks up win The Montana golfer found the course to his

liking today as he opened the back nine with a par win over Jim Fitzgerald of Montgomery, Texas. Fitzgerald rallied quickly to win by par on No. 11, but from there, Pike picked up a birdie win on 13 and a par win on 16 to take a 2-up lead at the turn. Starting their second nine on No. 1, both players halved the first three holes before Pike won No. 4 on a bogey and No. 6 on a par to take a 4-3 win. Seavall tops Gray Seavall found his stride early, birdying the first hole of his match against Thomas Gray of Minneapolis, and pars on No. 11 and 12 gave him a 3-up lead before Gray could get things moving. Gray, however, sliced into the lead with a par win before Seavall upped his advantage with a pair of pars. Evenly played action for the final three holes of the back nine left Seavall up by four at the turn.

He increased his lead as he parred No. 1, but Gray again shaved the advantage with his own par win. From there, Seavall came away with wins on Nos. 4 and 5 for a 6-4 victory and a spot in today’s action. Obele edges Riesberg It took 19 holes before Obele could dispatch his opponent, Ken Riesberg of Mesa, Arizona. Obele was the early leader, taking the first hole of the back nine, but Riesberg took control from there, winning three of the next five for a 2-up advantage. The Becker golfer closed out the first nine with a birdie win, however, cutting Riesberg’s lead to one. As they started the front nine, Riesberg increased his lead with a bogey and par win, but Obele soon retaliated, winning holes 4, 5 and 6 with pars to even the score.

Each player earned one more birdie win in regulation – Riesberg on No. 7 and Obele on No. 9 – sending the match to extra holes. It was Obele who picked up the win as he outplayed Riesberg on the first extra hole, winning in 19. Eidsvold stops Shriver The Alexandria golfer advanced to today’s round as he claimed a 31 win over David Shriver of Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Shriver was the first to gain ground in this match as he claimed No. 10 on a par, but Eidsvold was quick to return the favor on the following hole. Shriver again won, this time with a birdie on No. 12, but again, it was Eidsvold evening the match with a birdie of his own on No. 14. Eidsvold then added a par win to earn the advantage, but Shriver won holes 16 and 18 to

once again take the lead at the bend. Starting on the front nine gave Eidsvold new life and he took advantage of every opportunity, winning with pars on Nos. 1, 4 and 5 and capping off his successful run with a birdie on No. 8 to end the match. Mikesh upends Mathiasen It was a squeaker between Mikesh and Jack Mathiasen of Alexandria as Mikesh prevailed 1-up in 19 holes. Both players earned a par win in the first three holes of play before Mathiasen went up two on another pair of pars. Mikesh didn’t let things rest there. After sharing a hole, he won a par victory on No. 16 to cut Mathiasen’s lead to one, then evened the match on No. 1 with another win by par. Both players added one win apiece on the remaining regulation holes as Mikesh won No.

Two former champs spar Four-time Senior champ Cliff scratched out a 3-2 win over twotime Senior champion Dave Harris of Alexandria in the lower bracket. The Mankato golfer parred his first hole of the back nine to jump into the lead, then added to the advantage with a birdie win on No. 12. The former Cardinal girls’ golf coach then got into the action as he won No. 15 with a par, but Cliff wasn’t satisfied with a 1-up lead and laid claim to No. 16 on a par for a 2-up lead heading onto the front nine. Harris came through there, however, winning by birdie on No. 1, but again Cliff battled back, MASTERS

Freemans fill Executive Men’s Division Stefan, Bill and Jon all advanced to today’s round It was a good day to be a Freeman in the Executive Division yesterday as Stefan, Bill and Jon all picked up quick wins over their opponents to keep alive the threat of another all Freeman final on Saturday. Defending champion, Stefan, picked up right where he left off last year with an easy 6-5 win. Jon faired even better with a 7-6 win, while Bill took care of business with a 4-3 win over Chad Saice of Brooklyn Park. Stefan and Bill will be a part of the first group of Men’s Executives off

the first tee this afternoon at 1:12. Stefan will battle Sartell’s Steve Tax, while Bill locks up with Alexandria’s Brian Eidsvold. S. Freeman def. Gardiner, 6-5 The defending champ wasted little time putting Gardiner in a hole as he parred Nos. 10 and 11 out of the gate before birdying 12 to take a three-hole lead. He added another one to that with a par win on No. 14 before Gardiner finally got one back on No. 16. With a four-hole lead at the turn, Freeman continued to charge. He got a bogey win on No. 1 before pars on Nos. 4 and 5 put the match away. Tax def. Klongerbo, 5-4

an early deficit by taking three straight holes on Nos. 13, 14 and 15. Tax rebounded with par and birdie wins on Nos. 17 and 18 before making the turn onto the front. Tax took off from there. He parred Nos. 1 and 2 before a birdie on the third moved him 4up. He then picked up a bogey win on No. 4 to help secure the win. B. Freeman def. Saice, 4-3 Bill Freeman needed just 15 holes to get the job done yesterday as he built an early lead and held on for a 4-3 win over Saice. Freeman jumped out with par wins on Nos. 10 and 11 before moving 3up with a win on 14. Saice got two back with pars on the 16th and 17th, but a birdie on 18 gave Freeman some momentum going into the front. He jumped on Saice with another par win on No. 1 before taking Nos. 5 and 6 to secure the victory. Eidsvold def. O’Hara, 4-3 Eidsvold had an up and down round, but it was good enough to secure the win over Glenview’s Chris O’Hara in 15 holes yesterday. Both players strug-

gled to keep it under par through most of the afternoon. Eidsvold got a birdie win on No. 11 but also got three bogey wins and a double bogey win throughout the day. That helped him go 4-up through 13 holes. The two then halved Nos. 5 and 6 with bogeys to end the match. Abrahamson def. Tessmer, 7-5 Tom Abrahamson never dropped a hole in his match against Paradise Valley, Arizona resident Alan Tessmer as the Wayzata product cruised to the 7-5 win. Abrahamson got par wins on Nos. 10, 13, 14 and 17 to take a fourhole advantage onto the front. He took off from there, parring Nos. 1 and 2 before birdying No. 4 to put the finishing touches on the win. Adams def. Woodhull, 7-6 Maple Grove’s David Adams was just one over on the back as he took a five-shot lead into the turn and never looked back in his win over Minnetonka’s Duncan Woodhull. Adams never dropped a hole in the match. He took par wins on Nos. 11 and 12 before birdying EXECS

Tree trouble Maple Grove’s Christopher Adams found out the hard way the kind of tree trouble there is to get into at the Alexandria Golf Club. Unfortunately for Adams, his trouble came on the first hole of a playoff against Hastings’ Logan Dube. On the right, Adams tried to punch out only to have his ball end up even further under another tree. Dube ended up winning the hole and the match to advance to the Junior 10-12 semifinals.

EXECS from Page 10 the 14th. Two more par wins had him coasting before he ever reached the front nine. Once there, he continued to take care of business by just shooting par. His three straight fours on the front were good enough to secure the win over Woodhull. J. Freeman def. Bonstrom, 7-6 The wins continued to come easy for the Freemans with Jon’s 7-6 victory over Eagan’s John Bonstrom. Freeman gained an early lead by parring Nos. 12, 13 and 14 before Bonstrom gained back a hole on 16. Freeman responded by taking par wins on four straight holes before the two halved No. 3 to end the match. C. Johnson def. Rockers, 1-up Chad Johnson of Burnsville overcame an early deficit to win a tight battle with Shorewood’s Pete Rockeres. Rockers went up by two with a birdie win on the 10th and a par win on the 12th. Johnson answered almost immediately, winning Nos. 14 and 15 with a birdie and a par of his own. The two went onto the front all even after both players shot one-over par on the back. Rockers

responded first with a par win on No. 1 before Johnson took Nos. 4 and 6 to take his first lead of the day. Rockers answered with a win on the next hole, but a par win for Johnson on No. 8 proved to be the winner after the two halved No. 9. O’Connor def. Wagner, 3-2 The upset of the day came from Alexandria’s Donnacha O’Connor as he ousted the divisions’ second seed Todd Wagner. Wagner came into the day fresh off a qualifying score of 68. O’Connor carded an 85 during qualifying, but that’s why they play the game. O’Connor got the better of the Austin, Texas native on this day as he moves on to face another strong competitor in Cottage Grove’s John Butina today. Butina def. Sanders, 9-7 Butina was dominant in his match against Bryan Sanders of Hastings. He jumped out early with par wins on Nos. 10 and 11 before the two halved Nos. 12 and 13. Butina took the rest from there as he ended the match after just two holes on the front with par wins on Nos. 1 and 2. Dilley def. J. Johnson, 6-5 Alexandria’s David

Dilley got off to a torrid start and never looked back in his win over Chaska’s Jeff Johnson. Dilley won the first five holes by shooting one under. His birdie came on No. 13 before he added another par win on No. 16 to take a sixhole lead onto the front. Johnson finally answered another win by Dilley on the first hole with a win of his own on the second. By that point, it was too late as the two halved No. 3 to end the match. Bigger def. Gustafson, 7-6 Alexandria’s Jeff Bigger continued the trend of lopsided victories with a 7-6 win over Patrick Gustafson of Inver Grove Heights. Bigger started his round with a birdie and ended the back with two straight to take a fivehole lead into the turn. He kept adding on on the front, taking par wins on Nos. 1 and 2 before the two halved No. 3 to end the match. Haugen def. Gustafson, 6-5 Another Alexandria product, Chris Haugen, took care of business with a 6-5 win over Carlos’ Mike Gustafson. Haugen started fast with a birdie on the 10th and a par win on the 11th. He then went on to take five straight holes before making the turn.

Medalist Todd Wagner looked over his shot during yesterday’s round in the Executive Men’s Division. Wagner fell to Donnacha O’Connor 3-2.

Gustafson got a couple holes back on the front, but it was too little, too late as Haugen secured the win with a par win on No. 4. Harris def. Powell, 1-up

Summit, New Jersey resident Joel Harris needed all 18 holes to wrap up a win over Garfield’s Mike Powell. The two went back and forth all day. Powell jumped out early with

two straight wins on the back. He took a two-hole lead onto the front, but Harris responded with par and bogey wins on Nos. 1 and 2 to even EXECS

Both players then parred the next two as Harris held on for the narrow victory. Hagen def. Lueck, 2-1 Al Hagen of Harrisburg, South Dakota did not lead until 13 holes were in the book against Alexandria’s Mike Lueck. But when he finally got the lead, he held onto it. The two golfers were neck-and-neck before Lueck finally broke a tie with a win on No. 16. It’s a lead that lasted just one hole before Hagen evened things back up on 17. That’s how things would stay until the front. Hagen took the first of two straight holes on No. 4. The two then halved the next three holes and Hagen held on for the narrow win. T. Johnson def. Heimsness, 2-1 Thomas Johnson of Maple Grove took a twohole lead with a strong start to the front nine and never gave that lead back as he upended Woodbury’s Eric Heimsness, 2-1. Johnson birdied No.

Defending champ survives scare in Men’s Division A former champion fell, the defending champion survived a scare and a champion from another division rolled on in opening round play of the Men’s Championship Division Wednesday. Tyler Whiting of Alexandria, the 2008 titlist and this year’s medalist, was knocked out of contention by another Alexandrian – Brian Robley. Although Whiting’s

scorching qualifying round of 67 was eight strokes better than Robley’s, everything can change in match play and that’s what happened Wednesday as Robley eked out a 2-up victory. Last year’s champ, Jim Lehman Jr., had to go three extra holes but kept his repeat hopes alive. Meanwhile, Jack Dressen, a former Alexandrian and the

Resorters’ 2004 Junior Division champion, breezed to a quick 6-5 win. The action will kick up a notch today when

Eric Peterson of Benson followed his tee shot on No. 6 during his first round match against Chris Sholts of Alexandria yesterday. Peterson, who has advanced deep into the Resorters Men’s Championship at past tournaments, was defeated 5-4.

the “Sweet 16” starts from the No. 1 tee at 1:48 p.m. Here’s recap of yesterday’s matches: Lehman def. Peterson, 21 holes In a way, it’s a shame that an extremely well played, exciting round of golf was decided on a blown two-foot par putt, but that’s what happened in the LehmanPeterson battle. Sixteen-year-old Sam Peterson of Benson showed no signs of nerves going up against the defending champion, winning the first two holes with birdie, par. Lehman rallied with three straight wins on Nos. 6, 7 and 8 to steal the lead but Peterson’s birdie on the 9th hole made it all square at the turn. Peterson rolled in two more birdies on Nos. 10 and 11 to take his second 2-up lead but Lehman’s par took No. 13 and he once again deadlocked the match with a birdie on the short 17th hole. Both golfers swapped pars on No. 18, forcing extra holes. After pars on Nos. 1 and 2, the match came down to putting. Peterson had an advantage. He was looking at a six-foot birdie putt while Lehman was about 25 feet out. Lehman just missed his bird, leaving the ball on the edge of the cup for a gimme par. Peterson hit his downhill birdie try a little too firm, running it about two feet beyond the hole. He then missed the par putt coming back to bow out of contention. “We both played under-par golf the whole way,” said Lehman after the match. “Sam is a great young player, a natural. He hits it a long way and straight. I think he’ll win the Resorters one of these years.” Lehman added that this year’s field is bursting with young talent. He’ll face 20-year-old Tyler Monda of

Brainerd today. Lehman, 51, said he’s relying on his “maturity” to carry him farther along in the tournament. Monda def. Heinen, 3-2 Tyler Monda of Brainerd never trailed against Alec Heinen of Edmond, Oklahoma. He won the first hole, tied the next three and added a pair of wins on Nos. 5 and 6 to go 3-up. Monda’s birdie on No. 6 was for the highlight reel. He hit a left-handed chip shot from the left trees. Heinen sliced into the lead with wins on the next two holes but Monda took No. 9 to regain a two-hole advantage at the turn. The match bounced around a little from there. Monda really put on the pressure with a win on No. 15 to go 3-up. He then matched Heinen on the next hole to seal a 3-2 victory. Bahe def. Olson, 5-4 Kyle Bahe of Annandale likes the number “4.” That’s what he shot on seven of the first nine holes against Jon Olson of Hopkins. Four of those 4s – on Nos. 1, 4, 7 and 8 – gave him a 4-up lead. Olson’s par on No. 9 pulled him to within three but he could only match Bahe on the next two holes. Bahe’s par and bogey on Nos. 12 and 13 put him comfortably out front by five. Bahe closed the match on the next hole with another 4 to win it, 5-4. Waldeland def. Johnson, 2-1 Erik Waldeland of St. Michael fended off a rally from Alexandria’s Luke Johnson to live another day. Johnson drew first blood, a par win on No. 2 but Waldeland put together three wins on Nos. 3, 5 and 6 with a par and two birdies to go 2-up. Johnson crept to within one with a bogey win on No. 7 but Waldeland made birdie on the 9th

hole to take a two-hole lead at the turn. After both golfers birdied No. 10, Johnson made his move, winning the next three holes with two birdies and a par to steal the lead. Waldeland stopped the comeback by matching Johnson’s par on No. 14 and then mounted a counter-attack. He won the next three holes with par, birdie, par to notch a 2-1 victory. Sholts def. Peterson, 5-4 Chris Sholts of Alexandria had a fairly easy day on the course yesterday, coasting past Eric Peterson of Benson, 5-4. Strandemo def. Black, 3-2 Something must have fired up Thomas Strandemo of Fargo, North Dakota when he walked through the tunnel to No. 10 in his match against Alexandria’s Bryant Black. In front by just one hole, Strandemo kicked his game into high gear, carding three straight birdies on the back nine and adding a par win on No. 13 to jolt ahead by five. Black tried to get back in it with a birdie win on No. 14 and a par win on No. 15 but his par on the next hole didn’t do anything but give Strandemo a 3-2 win. Black def. Giorgi, 2-1 Bennett Black of Alexandria steadily built a three-hole advantage on the front nine and held on the rest of the way to upset Mark Giorgi of Red Wing. Black won five holes on the front – Nos. 2 (birdie), 3, 5 (birdie), 6 (birdie) and 8 – while Giorgi managed just two wins, Nos. 4 and 7. After the turn, Giorgi stormed back with three straight wins on a par and two birdies to square the match. Black, stunned but not out, made a clutch birdie on No. 13 to MEN

21

MEN from Page 20 regain the lead. His par on No. 15 put him 2-up and he matched Giorgi’s birdie and par on the next two holes to win it, 2-1. Dressen def. Woodhull, 6-5 Jack Dressen of Edina stormed out to a fivehole lead on the front nine and gave up just one hole on the day, No. 10, to coast to a quick victory over Alex Woodhull. Dressen made three birdies – Nos. 4, 12 and 13, which helped propel him to a 6-5 win. “I putted a lot better than yesterday, which helped,” Dressen commented after the match. Robley def. Whiting, 2-up This was a match that had Resorters fans buzzing: An up-anddown duel between two Alexandrians. On the front nine, it was all Brian Robley. After just six holes, he was 5-up. Whiting finally got his first win on No. 9 but trailed by four at the turn. The back nine, however, belonged to Whiting and he appeared on the verge of a miraculous comeback. Whiting won Nos. 11, 12 and 14 to pull to within one and then deadlocked the match

with a win on No. 15. Robley wasn’t about to let this one slip away, however. He won No. 16 to regain the lead, matched Whiting on the next hole, and won No. 18 to seal a stunning 2up win. Smolenski def. Gustafson, 1-up It was one of the most evenly played matches of the afternoon. Tom Smolenski of Minnetonka and Tanner Gustafson of Carlos both won three holes on the front nine. Smolenski took his third lead of the match with a birdie on No. 10 but Gustafson fought back with a par win on No. 13 to tie it. Smolenski regained the lead with a par on the next hole but couldn’t deliver the kill shot, settling for ties on the next two holes before Gustafson tied the match again with a par win on No. 17. Smolenski’s par on No. 18 was good enough to take the hole and the match, 1-up. Todora def. Vangsness, 2-1 Dominic Todora of Woodbury got off to a slow start against Casey Vangsness of Alexandria. Vangsness won the first hole with par, lost

the next hole to Todora’s birdie but then won No. 3 with par to take back the lead. Todora tied it again with a birdie on the next hole and moved into the lead for the first time with a birdie win on No. 6. After that, Todora just kept the pressure on. He won Nos. 7 and 8 with a par and a birdie to go 3up at the turn. Vangsness refused to give in easily, however. He won Nos. 10 and 11 with pars to narrow the gap to one. The margin stayed there until No. 14 when Todora’s par was good enough to take the hole and put him 2-up. Pars by both golfers on the next three holes gave Todora a 2-1 win. Hafdal def. Hanson in 19 It may not have been the best round of golf of the day – both competitors were well over par – but it was one of biggest nail-biters. Through the first seven holes, the only difference-makers came on No. 1, a bogey win by Grant Hanson, which was quickly erased by Jordan Hafdal’s par win on No. 2, and on No. 4, a par win for Hanson. Hafdal knotted the match with a par win on

No. 8 and took his first lead with a birdie win on No. 10. Hanson rallied for a par win on the long 12th hole and jumped back into the lead with a par on No. 13. The lead didn’t linger, however, as Hafdal’s par took No. 14 and his par on No. 17 put him out front. Hanson forced sudden death with a clutch birdie win on No. 18 but it was his last hurrah. Hafdal won it on the first extra hole. Hafdal def. Webskowski, 2-up Alexandria’s Jesse Hafdal, the numberthree seed in the bracket, had his hands full when he tangled with Paul Webskowski of Plymouth, the 30th seed. Webskowski surged out front with par wins on the first two holes. Hafdal stopped the bleeding with a par win on No. 4 but Webskowski answered with a par win on No. 5. Hafdal again cut into the lead with a par win on the next hole and then squared the match with a birdie on No. 8. Webskowski’s par on the 9th hole gave him a 1-up lead at the turn, which Hafdal erased

with a par win on No. 11. Hafdal took his first lead with a birdie on No. 14 and followed it up with a par win on No. 15. Webskowski held tough, however, by knocking in a birdie on the next hole to draw to within one. After both golfers swapped pars on the short 17th, Hafdal made par on No. 18 to win the hole and the match, 2up. Klein def. Conlin, 6-4 Geoff Klein of Mankato was a picture of consistency in his match against Riley Conley of Minnetonka. He shot nothing but 4s on the front nine and held a six-hole lead at the turn. Conley notched just one win on the front, a birdie on the second hole. After both golfers halved Nos. 10 and 11 with pars, Conley prolonged the match with a birdie win on No. 12 but time was against him. Klein matched his bogey on the next hole and Klein’s birdie on No. 14 ended the match, 6-4. Constable def. Lervick, 3-2 Donald Constable of Deephaven and Collin Lervick of Chanhassen were neck-and-neck

through the first 11 holes. Constable won two holes – Nos. 1 and 6 with par, birdie – but Lervick also struck for a pair of wins, pars on Nos. 9 and 10 to even the match. Constable broke the deadlock with back-toback wins on No. 12 (a birdie) and No. 12 (par) to go 2-up and then padded the lead with a key par win on No. 15. Whiting took the first lead on No. 4 and won Nos. 5 and 6 to go 3-up. Diekman whittled the lead to two with a win on the par-5 12th hole and got to within one by winning No. 15. All in the family Freemans make Resorters Golf Tournament a family affair championship flight in their respective divisions. Jon, Stefan and Bill all gave themselves a chance at a title by advancing in the Executive Division yesterday. Jon and Stefan battled for the Executive Men’s title last year before Stefan beat his brother in the 19th hole. Two of the generational bookends also qualified for their championship flights as Connie made it in the Masters Division, while Mitch did the same in his Junior Division. Mitch has already played his way into the semifinals with a 5-3 win over Garrett Turnacliff yesterday morning.

For a lot of people, Resorters week is about much more than just golf. That rings true for Alexandria’s Connie Freeman who, after golfing in the tournament for more than 50 years, has the fortune of playing with family members from all around the state this year. A total of seven Freemans are playing in the 2010 event. It’s a group that crosses three generations from Connie to Alex and Mitch in the Junior 13-15 Division. The Freemans aren’t just playing for fun; they’re in it to win it as five of the seven family members qualified for the

Mitch Freeman (right) teed off on the ninth box during yesterday’s Junior 13-15 Division play. Mitch is one of seven members of the Freeman family playing in this year’s Resorters tournament. He and Alex Freeman are the youngest of three generations represented. Mitch, much like the rest of the Freeman family, has proven to be a handful for his opposition in this year’s field. He punched his ticket to the semifinals of the 13-15 Division. Bill, Jon and Stefan all did the same yesterday with wins in the Executive Men’s Division. Alexandria’s Connie Freeman qualified for the championship flight in the Masters Division but came up just short in his quest to advance yesterday.

Barge wins annual Pro-Am Mike Barge of the Hazeltine National Golf Club came out of a strong field as the winner of the 2010 Sprint All-State Wireless/Alexandria Area Hotels and Hospitality Committee Pro-Am that kicked off Resorters week at the Alexandria Golf Club on Sunday afternoon. Barge shot a six-under 66 to edge 2009 co-champion Ben Meyers of the Medina Golf Club. Jeremy Decko and Brady Swedberg of AGC were part of a group of four pros who finished tied for third with rounds of 68. Decko was shooting for a share of his third straight Pro-Am title. Alexandria head pro Ron Rebrovich carded a 71 and finished tied for 11th. For the first 16 years of the Pro-Am, it served as the kickoff for the annual Resorters Golf Tournament, but moved away from that event in 2004. Byron Zinn of Spicewood Texas, above, wasn’t entirely pleased with his putt on the No. 5 green during his Senior Men’s Division match against Roger Ledebuhr. Zinn wound up losing the match, 3-2. At right, Alexandria’s Brandon Bistodeau (left) talked things over with a friend before putting on No. 17 during Junior 13-15 Division action yesterday morning.
