ike father, like son. The Junior 10-12 Division is filled with young golfers who no doubt developed a love for the game by following around their dads at an early age.
Wednesday’s action in the championship flight offered these fathers an opportunity to lend a helping hand and teach their sons how to handle the ups and downs that go with playing in a tournament setting. Getting a chance to spend some quality time with them on the golf course makes it an easy job. On the right, Logan

Five Alexandria golfers ousted Defending champ pulls out another hard-fought win After surviving three extra holes in the opening round, defending champion Jim Lehman Jr. squeaked past his second round opponent in 18 holes yesterday to keep his hopes of a repeat Resorters Men’s Division title alive. Also advancing were the 2004 Junior Division champion Jack Dressen of Edina and six other hopefuls, including Don Constable of Deephaven, who continues to sizzle after a runner-up finish in the State Am. It was a rough afternoon for Alexandria golfers: Both Hafdals, Jordan and Jesse, were eliminated, as was Chris Sholts, Bennett Black and Derrick Whiting. The lone bright spot for the local golfers was Brian Robley of Alexandria who coasted to a 5-4 win. The “Elite Eight” will duke it out in today’s
quarterfinal action that begins from the No. 1 tee at 1:24 p.m. Here’s a recap of yesterday’s action: Lehman def. Monda, 1-up It was one of the bestplayed matches of the day. And that’s why it was so close. Lehman was even-par on the front nine but only led Tyler Monda of Brainerd by one at the turn. Lehman padded his lead to two with a birdie on No. 11 but Monda answered with a par win on the next hole. Lehman nailed a birdie win on No. 13 and didn’t blink after that. Both men shot birdie, birdie, par, par, birdie on the final five holes, giving Lehman a too-closefor-comfort 1-up victory. Monda shot 3-under par on the back nine but Lehman matched that and his two wins did the trick. The 51-year-old from Plymouth will square off against Kyle Bahe of Annandale this afternoon.

Bahe def. Waldeland, 4-3 Bahe caught fire on the back nine against Eric Waldeland of St. Michael. Holding a slim 1-up lead at the turn, Bahe strung together wins on the first four holes on the back, thanks to par, birdie, birdie, par. Suddenly down by five, Waldeland tried to make a match of it with a par win on No. 14 but that was the end of the comeback. Pars on the next hole gave Bahe a 43 win. Strandemo def. Sholts, 1-up What a wild ride. The match between Chris Sholts of Alexandria and Tom Strandemo was more like a ping-pong match with the lead bouncing quickly back and forth through 18 topsy-turvy holes. and 16 with a par and a eagle followed by two more pars. Strandemo, however, won Nos. 11, 13, 15 and 17 with birdie, par, birdie, birdie so the match was all even going to the final hole. Strandemo ended it in fitting style – a birdie to capture a wild 1-up win. Both golfers played excellent golf. Strandemo was 1-under for the day while Sholts was just 1-over. Dressen def. Black, 2-up Former Alexandrian Jack Dressen got off to a quick start against Bennett Black of Alexandria, winning the first two holes with birdies. Black struck for one win on the front, a par on No. 4 and trailed by one at the turn. Dressen turned up the heat by draining a 15foot birdie putt on No. 11 to go 2-up and his bogey was good enough to take No. 14. Black tried to mount a comeback with back-toback wins on Nos. 16 and 17 to take the match to No. 18, down by one. But Dressen sealed the deal with a nifty approach shot that left him just six feet from the cup for an easy birdie. “It was an even match all the way,” Dressen commented. “Bennett played really well and neither of us could shake each other for the win.” Robley def. Smolenski, 5-4 Brian Robley of Alexandria never trailed in his match against Tom Smolenski of Minnetonka.

On the front side, he won Nos. 2, 3 and 5 before Smolenski finally stirred with a win on the par-5 No. 6. Robley won the next three holes to take a commanding 5-up lead at the turn. He coasted from there, dropping just one hole, the par-5 12th before putting the match away with a win on the 14th hole. Todora def. Hafdal, 3-2 Three straight wins on the back nine carried Dominic Todora of Woodbury to a 3-2 victory over Alexandria’s Jordan Hafdal. It was a very tight match in the beginning. Todora won the first hole with birdie but Hafdal tied it with a par win on No. 4. Todora surged back with a par win on No. 5 only to drop the next hole to Hafdal’s par. Todora’s par took No. 7 but Hafdal rallied with a birdie on the 9th hole to draw even at the turn. After swapping pars on the next two holes, Todora made his move, winning Nos. 12, 13 and 14 with birdie, par, birdie to suddenly go 3up with four holes left to play. Hafdal could only make par on the next two holes, which Todora matched to take a 3-2 victory. Klein def. Hafdal, 2-1 The other Hafdal match was even closer. Geoff Klein built a two-hole lead through the front, winning five holes to Jesse Hafdal’s three. Except for Klein’s pars on No. 4 and 8, all the wins came on birdies.

After swapping pars on Nos. 10 and 11, they both ran into trouble on the long 12th hole. Klein wound up winning the hole with a bogey and followed it up with a birdie win on No. 13 to go 4-up. Hafdal hung tough, however, taking Nos. 14 and 15 with birdie, par to slice the lead to two with three holes left. The turnaround stalled though when Hafdal had to settle for pars on No. 16 and 17. Klein matched it to preserve a 2-1 victory. Constable def. Whiting, 4-3 Donald Constable is showing Resorters followers what has made him such a tough competitor in high-level golf tournaments. In mid-June, he finished second in the Minnesota match play tournament (last year, he won it all). He also finished second in the State Am and missed qualifying for the U.S. Open by one measly stroke. He also won the North-South Amateur, placed in the top 10 in the Porter Cup and was a local qualifier for the U.S. Amateur. Constable is no stranger to the Resorters. He played in the Junior Division four or five years ago and would have played more except the date conflicted with the amateur qualifier. He’ll be entering his senior year at the University of Minnesota and his plan after finishing college is to seek his professional card. But first things first. Yesterday, Constable MEN

MEN from Page 4 found himself trailing by two after Derrick Whiting of Littleton, Colorado came out of the gate with birdies on Nos. 1 and 2. Constable fought back, winning Nos. 3, 4 and 5 with pars to steal the lead. The lead held through the front when both golfers shot nothing but pars. Constable kept the pressure on after the turn,
again winning three straight holes, Nos. 11, 12 and 13 with par, birdie, par to take a commanding four-hole lead. He continued his near mistake-free round by matching Whiting’s birdie and par on the next two holes, giving him a 4-3 win. On the day, Constable was 2-under par.
CHIP SHOTS The driver swing speed of an average lady golfer is 62mph; 96mph for an average LPGA professional; 84mph for an average male golfer; 108mph for an average PGA Tour player; 130mph for Tiger Woods; 148-152mph for a national long drive champion. The next time you hear someone say professional golfers are not athletes, clue them in on this. 1 mph of swing speed increase = 1.5mph of ball velocity increase = 3 yards of carry distance increase.
The ban was eventually lifted quite some time later, in 1502. Ever wondered where the golfing term “birdie” comes from? It seems we have an American named Ab Smith to thank. While striding around a course in 1899, he played what he described as a “bird of a shot”, which became “birdie” over time. (“Bird” was 19th American slang for anything really, really good. Kind of like “cool” is for us.)
Golf buffs may cry “Sacrilege!”, but thereʼs an alternative version of the game in existence. Invented in 1989, Golfcross uses big suspended nets instead of holes, and the balls are oval – like golf balls crossed with eggs. There are dedicated courses from New Zealand to the UK, if youʼre feeling adventurous. Thereʼs a long-standing myth that the word “golf” is an acronym of Gentlemen Only, Ladies Forbidden. Which is amusing, but unfortunately complete rubbish. The word actually stems from original 15th Century spellings that included “gouf”, “goulf”, “goiff” and “gouff” (indecisive lot, 15th Century Scots).
George Cliff of Mankato clapped his hands in frustration after a missed putt during his Masters’ Championship match against George Mikesh yesterday. Cliff, a four-time champion in the Senior Men’s Division, was edged out after 20 holes.
Golf was actually outlawed in Scotland in 1457. James II was the killjoy behind the ban – he was preparing for an English invasion and wanted his citizens to concentrate on useful hobbies like archery.
Dormie, the golf jargon word referring to a player decisively leading a game, comes from “dormir”, a word of shared French and Latin origin which means “to sleep”. In other words, the playerʼs so far in front he can afford to sleep.
There are 336 dimples on a regulation golf ball. The longest putt in history was measured at 140 feet and 2 3/4 inches on the 18th hole at St. Andrewʼs golf course. It was shot by Bob Cook on October 1, 1976. There are approximately 11,000 golf courses in North America. There are more than 50 million golfers in the world.

GIMMEE: Baby talk for “give me,” a putt of two feet or less that a friendly opponent declares does not have to be holed out. GOBBLE: A putt that unexpectedly lands in the hole. IN THE LEATHER: A putt closer to the hole than the distance between a putter’s head and its grip. In friendly matches, an opponent may declare such a putt a gimmee. MULLIGAN: A second shot off the tee, often permitted once in a casual round. Also known as a Shapiro. POT BUNKER: A small, deep sand trap. QUAIL HIGH: A long shot that has a low trajectory. RABBIT: A topped shot that bounces erratically. Also called a scooter. RAINMAKER: A ball hit underneath that goes straight up into the air. RUB OF THE GREEN: When a ball in motion is stopped or deflected by an outside agency. Another way of saying “tough luck.” SCLAFFING: Hitting the ground behind the ball, causing an embarrassing divot. SCOOP: A bad swing in which the club head has a dipping or digging action.
SKULLING: Hitting a chip or pitch shot too hard and sending the ball past the green. SKYWRITING: The act of making a loop or circle with the club head at the top of the backswing. SNIPE: A sharpl hooke dball that dives quickly. STONY: A shot where the ball lands close to the flagstick. STYMIE: In the past, this referred to the situation when one’s putt was blocked by an opponent’s ball. The rules have been changed so that the blocking ball can be lifted. Now the term refers to being blocked by a tree or other obstruction. TAKING THE PIPE: Collapsing under pressure at the critical stage of a golf competition. Also called choking. TIGER: Someone who is playing unusually well. WHIFF: A complete miss of the ball on a swing. Also called a fan. WHINS: A British term for heavy rough or brush. VIPS: Convulsive shakes that cause the player to badly miss a putt.
Amanda Woodhull of Minnetonka watched the flight of her ball off the first tee box on Thursday afternoon. The Gustavus-Adolphus golfer was on top of her game yesterday as she upended Alexandria’s Molly Leland 5-4. Woodhull hopes to take down another Leland today. She’ll face off with Class AAA champion, Maggie, this time around as the two battle it out with a trip to the championship match on the line.

Defending champ moves into semifinals Jon Empanger is one of four remaining in the Senior Men’s Division flight Defending champion Jon Empanger of Chaska had an easier time of it yesterday than he did in his first match,
putting him into today’s semifinal match against Norty Blanchard of Burnsville. Blanchard, on the other hand, had a hard battle to finally upend Jim Arnold of Plymouth to earn his spot. In the lower bracket, Greg Mattson of Becker and Gene Seashore of Lakewood Ranch,
Florida will face off. Empanger def. Ledebuhr 5-4 A pair of birdie wins sparked the defending champion to his 5-4 victory over Roger Ledebuhr of Eden Prairie yesterday. Things started slow for the two golfers as they shared the first three holes of play, but

After another knotted hole to start the back, the defending champ snatched up a par win on No. 11 and a birdie win on No. 14 to close out the match. Blanchard def. Arnold 2-up It was Blanchard’s birdie on the final hole of play yesterday that propelled him into today’s semifinal as he defeated Jim Arnold of Plymouth 2-up. Neither player could gain a strong foothold in this match with the early lead going Blanchard’s way on a birdie win on the third hole and a par win on No. 4. Arnold was able to erase part of that deficit he was in with a birdie win on six, but Blanchard secured a par victory on No. 8 to take a 2-up advantage heading into the back nine. The Plymouth player didn’t allow Blanchard any breathing room as he came through with his second birdie of the round on No. 10, once again halving Blanchard’s lead.

It was Mattson who ended the match after 19 holes as he won on a par. Seashore def. Peterson 2-1 It was a tale of two halves in Seashore’s win over Larry Peterson of Albert Lea. Peterson notched two birdies (Nos. 3 and 13) and four wins on the front nine to take a 2-up lead from Seashore at the turn. Seashore, who had won the opening hole on the front, then birdied No. 4, got his game going on the back nine as he won both 10 and 11 on pars to even the match. Nos. 12 and 13 were shared by the golfers, and Seashore took his first lead of the match since his win on No. 4 as he parred the 14th hole. Another two shared holes occurred before Seashore closed out the match with a par win on 17.
Blanchard again increased his lead to two with a par win on the 12th hole, and again it was Arnold barreling back to win No. 16 with a par to leave Blanchard with a tenuous 1-up margin. It was then that Blanchard’s second birdie allowed him to move on to today’s round. Mattson def. Fluegel, 19 holes It was a horserace between Mattson and Fluegel of Alexandria in the lower bracket matchup with the two players exchanging leads throughout the round and requiring them to play an extra hole. Mattson was able to grab the lead on No. 3 when he parred for a win, but Fluegel didn’t give him any time to breathe as he quickly evened the match with a par on the following hole. He jumped into the lead on No. 5 with another par win, but No. 6 went Mattson’s way on a birdie victory, once again tying things up. The two coasted through a shared hole on 7, but Mattson emerged as the leader after a par win on 8. Fluegel refused to give up and birdied the final hole on the front

Medalist upended Steve Seavall knocked Clayton Pike from competition in Thursday’s Masters’ Division action The Masters Division looks like it’s anybody’s to take after this year’s medalist was bounced from the field yesterday. Steve Seavall of Spicewood, Texas needed to be on his game to upend division favorite Clayton Pike of Billings, Montana. That’s exactly what he was as he played at 3-over par and took care of Pike in a 6-4 match. That opens the door for the rest of the field, including Alexandria’s own Tom Eidsvold. Eidsvold survived a close contest with Becker’s Gary Obele to advance to the semifinals today. The Masters will determine who will play for a championship when they take to the first tee box at 12:12 this afternoon. Seavall def. Pike, 6-4 The best way to describe Seavall’s game on Thursday would be as steady. The Texas product parred seven of his nine holes on the front, including the final five heading into the turn. Five of those pars were good for wins as Pike struggled to find his stroke and finished the front at 7-over par. He finally got one back with a bogey win on No. 11. By that time, it was too late. Seavall continued to put up pars on Nos. 12 and 13 before a birdie on 14 ended the
match with four to go. Eidsvold def. Obele, 2-1 Eidsvold should have the gallery on his side today as the Alexandria resident tries to slow down Seaval. Eidsvold is coming off a match that he never trailed in but never led by more than two holes against Obele. He took the early lead with a birdie on No. 4 before adding another hole on the par-5 6th. It was a game of give and take from there. Every time Obele won a hole back, Eidsvold answered. It’s a scenario that played out three times as Obele took Nos. 7, 10 and 12 before Eidsvold answered with wins on 8, 11 and 13. Obele again put a little pressure on his opponent by taking No. 15 with a par. The two halved the next hole before a par win by Eidsvold on 17 advanced him to the semifinals for a battle with Seavall. Mikesh def. Cliff, 20 holes The match of the day in this division was finally decided in 20 holes as Scottsdale, Arizona’s George Mikesh used a par win on No. 2 to complete a gutsy comeback win over Mankato’s George Cliff on the second playoff hole. Cliff got off to a great start on the back by birdying No. 10 to take a 3hole lead. He held that same lead after 13 before Mikesh started to make his run. Meyer was on his game on Wednesday as he birdied Nos. 12 and 14 on his way to playing the back at even par. That led to a 4-2 win over Alexandria’s Austin McCulloch. Bennett’s win over defending champion Nick Heinen in the opening round has him playing with a lot of confidence, though. Can he continue his run into the finals? Will another Freeman play for a title tomorrow? The answers to those questions will start to come when this group tees off of No. 1 at noon today.

Junior 10-12s pare down today The younger group tees off at 9:27 a.m. at No. 10 After a day of rest, the Junior 10-12 Division is ready to determine a couple of finalists who will play for a chance to hoist their first Resorters trophy tomorrow afternoon. One Alexandria player still remains as Grant Zwilling hopes to be the last one standing on Saturday. He has the advantage of playing on his home course, but he has to go through medalist Sam Franklin of Maple Grove to reach the finals. Franklin shot a 42 during his qualifying round on Tuesday and is coming off a 5-3 win over Andrew Lindberg on Wednesday. Zwilling edged Jack Dierks of Leawood, Kansas on Wednesday in a tight 2-1 battle. He took bogey wins on
Nos. 14 and 15 before doing the same on No. 17 to take the match. Hastings’ Logan Dube and Chaska’s Lincoln Johnson will fight it out this morning to join either Zwilling or Franklin in tomorrow’s final. Johnson had a little easier time of things in his 3-1 win over Alexandria’s Blake Bloedorn. He never trailed on Wednesday and took holes 13, 15 and 17 to ends things early. These four now have an opportunity to play themselves into a championship match when they take to the box this morning. They’ll be the first championship flight to tee off when they gather on the 10th tee at 9:36.

Vangsness 41st at MGA State Amateur Alexandria’s Casey Vangsness finished 41st after the final round of the 107 Minnesota Golf Association State Amateur Championship at Dakotah Ridge Golf Club in Morton, with a total 76-75-77-228. He made the day two cut by finishing 34th. Both Gordy Diekman of Alexandria and former Alexandrian Jack Dressen missed the cut after day two. Dressen came in with a 75-79154, while Diekman finished at 81-79-160. The cut was 153. Tom Hoge of Village Green Golf Club won the tournament with a three-day total of 67-6771-205, one stroke ahead of Resorters regular Donald Constable of Deephaven.
Decko ties AGC course record It was a good day for Jeremy Decko. The former Cardinal golfer and now golf pro, Decko shot an 11-under-par 61 at the Alexandria Golf Club July 6, tying the course record. That record, set by Brett Swedberg, another pro from Alexandria, was originally set in 2007. Swedberg shot 61 on back-toback days at the golf club, breaking the record that he and his brother, Brady, had set in the summer of 2004, just a day apart.
Alexandria’s Jesse Hafdal chipped onto the 2nd green during his match against Geoff Klein yesterday afternoon. Hafdal came up short in his bid to advance to the quarterfinals today when Klein edged him 2-1.

2009 EXEC MEN’S DIVISION From the July 19, 1972 edition of the Lake Region Echo… The Lakes Publishing Company of Detroit Lakes recently put out a folder entitled “Listening Rates for Golf”. It lists the rates for “sympathetic listening to descriptions of your golf game”. For a time limit of five minutes, the general rates are as follows for listening to: Long drives – 25 cents; Flubbed drives – 50 cents; Beautiful approaches – 75 cents; Long putts sunk – 35 cents; Short putts missed – 50 cents; Getting out of rough – 15 cents; getting out of bunkers – 45 cents; birdies – 85 cents; eagles – $1.15; almost a hole-in-one – $2.00. Qualified rates for a listening time limit of 15 minutes for describing 18 holes, hole-by-hole, as follows; Under 90 – $1.00; between 91 and 100 – $1.50; over 100 – $2.50; description of vacation golf – $2.50.
Special rates for hard luck golf, describing bad lies, unethical opponents, out-ofbounds, landing in rough, looking up, disturbances on tee shots, etc; just listening – 15 cents each; listening with sincerity – 35 cents each; listening to shots by opponents that were actually lucky – three for a dime. For “if” shooting, for example, “if the caddy held the pin”; “if I didn’t top the ball”; if the ball didn’t rim the cup”; “if I didn’t slice” the rates are a bit higher. These are very difficult to listen to and rates include 35 cents for five minutes and 60 cents for ten minutes. Hourly rates are also available upon request. Listening to “what’s wrong with the course” diatribes generally run 50 cents. Complaints about the clubhouse cost $1.00 each, but “what’s wrong with the members” complaints are on special this week at a dollar a dozen.

Defending champion ousted in Executive Men’s race Osakis coach Steve Tax tops Stefan Freeman to open up the division Osakis boys’ and girls’ golf coach Steve Tax of Sartell proved yesterday that he can do more than just teach the game. Tax, who guided the Silverstreak girls to a third-place finish and Kelsey Ross to an individual Class A title this past spring, blew the Executive Men’s Division field wide open by edging defending champion Stefan Freeman 1-up. Tax took his first lead with a par on 15 and held on through the final three holes to advance to the quarterfinals today. Waiting for him on the 1st box when the Execs tee off today at 1 p.m. will be Alexandria’s Brian Eidsvold. He is one of three Alexandria golfers who still have a chance to hoist that trophy at the end of the week. Donnacha

It appeared the lead would be short-lived when Tax faced a long 25-foot par putt on No. 16 but he sank it to halve the hole. “That was big,” Tax noted after the match. Both golfers parred No. 17 and bogeys on No. 18 ended the match in Tax’s favor. Tax has competed in the Resorters before but this is the farthest he has advanced into the

He took advantage of a bogey by Johnson with a par win that cut the deficit to three heading onto the back. Once there, he slowly chipped away at that lead. Freeman needed to just shoot par on the back to get the job done. His only birdie came on the 12th, but it did him no good as Johnson carded one of his own. Freeman’s wins came with pars on Nos. 10, 13 and 16 to tie things up late. Johnson answered with a par win on 17 before opening the door with a bogey on the 18th. Freeman took advantage with a par to force extra holes. It took a while, but he completed the comeback on the 21st hole to advance to the quarterfinals. O’Connor def. Butina, 6-5 Alexandria Golf Club Superintendent Donnacha O’Connor continued his run with another win over an opponent coming off a great round. O’Connor took down division medalist Todd Wagner on Wednesday and had to face an opponent in John Butina of Cottage Grove who won 9-7 on Wednesday. Butina didn’t hit a bad ball that day but struggled to get going from the get-go yesterday. O’Connor took advantage of that and built a big lead through nine. Bigger struck first with a birdie on No. 1, but it didn’t take Dilley long to answer. He carded a par win on the 2nd and birdie win on No. 6 to take his first lead. Bigger answered with a birdie of his own on No. 7, but the rest of the round belonged to Dilley. He picked up wins on Nos. 9 and 10 to go along with those birdies on 11 and 14 as he survived to play another day. Harris def. He then got another win on 7 to take a 1-hole lead into
the turn. That’s where Mohwinkel made a charge that proved to be the difference in the match. The oldest person in the world to ace was Otto Bucher. He was 99 when he scored a hole in one in 1985. And two 6-year-olds – Tommy Moore (1968) and Brittny Andreas (1991) – beat the odds, too. No one knows why the warning shout of “fore!” is used all over the world, but it is known that the first person to shout it was a caddie named Herd, in 1854. One speculation is that it’s a shortened version of “beware before!” – which is shouted by the British army artillery as a warning to the infantry in front of them. The infantry would lie down to let the cannonballs pass over their heads. Golfers are thus warned by fellow players that ducking might be a good idea. The human traffic is so heavy on the Fukuoka Golf Course in Japan that stop-and-go lights have been placed at three holes.

Birdies abound as the defending champion, a Gustie golfer, a three-time Resorters champ and a two-time state champion remain alive for today’s semifinals There was some hotshooting going on in the Women’s Division yesterday as the two foursomes carded 13 birdies and an eagle in the championship flight. The eagle belonged to Minnewaska graduate Sarah Roering, who claimed three of the birdies as well, while defending champion Maggie Leland of Alexandria had four, St. Louis Park’s Betsy Aldrich had three, Amanda Woodhull of Minnetonka two and Molly Noser of Rochester collected one. Pairings for today will be interesting to watch as they match Leland, a two-time champ, with Woodhull, a member of the Gustavus Adolphus golf team that finished second in the NCAA Division III Championships. In the lower bracket it will be the two-time state champion Roering
facing off against St. Louis Park’s Betsy Aldrich, who has three Resorters titles to her name. No matter how you slice it, the final four will be putting on a show today as they tee off on the first hole at 12:48 p.m. Ma. Leland def. Noser 5-4 The back nine must have held some special secret for the defending champion, Maggie Leland, who defeated Noser 5-4 yesterday as she carded three of her four birdies for the day on that nine. Leland’s consistent play found her slowly building momentum after the first two holes that were halved by the two players, winning No. 3 on a par. Her lead was shortlived as Noser carded her only win of the day – a birdie – on No. 4. From there, the two
players were deadlocked for the next three holes and it was Leland who edged into the lead on No. 8 with a birdie. She held that 1-up lead onto the 10th tee, but cleaned up on the back nine, recording wins of birdie, par, birdie for a 4-up lead, then ended it on No. 14 with her final birdie of the day. Woodhull tops Mo. Leland Molly Leland wasn’t as fortunate as her sister, falling to Woodhull of Minnetonka by a 5-4 score. It was a back-andforth match for the two golfers through the first five holes with Woodhull winning holes 1,3 and 5 on pars and the Alexandria golfer taking 2 and 4, also on pars. Woodhull, who tied for 36th in the NCAA Division III Championships while playing for the Gusties,

improved to 3-up at the turn as she won Nos. 7 and 8 and on a par and a birdie. Unlike Leland, Woodhull found the back nine to her liking, jumping ahead by four with a par on No. 10, then birdied No. 13 for a 5-up lead. Leland posted a par on the following hole to cut one point from Woodhull’s advantage, but the Minnetonka player finished off the match as she parred No. 14. Aldrich downs Cummings It was a fairly easy round for Aldrich, who burned up the course early as she opened with a birdie win on No. 1 in her 7-6 victory over

Bridget Cummings of Chaska. Aldrich added two more birdie victories on Nos. 5 and 6, sandwiched between par wins on Nos. 2, 7 and 8. She allowed Cummings just one hole, that a par win on No. 3, before the two-time Women’s Division champ took a 5up lead into the turn. On the back nine, Aldrich continued her march toward a spot in the semifinals as she won 10 and 12 on pars to close out the match at 7-6. Beckendorf of Blaine. Roering opened her match on a tear with two of those birdies, but saw Beckendorf slowly chip away at her lead as she parred Nos. 4 and 6 to tie things up. It was the Glenwood golfer who then stepped up, winning by par on No. 8 for a 1-up lead as they headed under the bridge. Starting out the back nine with a par win gave the future Colorado State University golfer a 2-up lead before she fired that eagle on the par-5 No. 12. She then cruised to wins of par and birdie to end her match 5-4, sending her to today’s round.
