Gateway to the Mighty Mississippi

ark Rapids is the undisputed Gateway to Itasca State Park and the south entrance is a 19-mile drive from Park Rapids north on Highway 71. The east entrance is only a couple miles farther north of the south entrance, and then another mile or so west on Hwy 200 – you’ll ďŹ nd it easily at the junction of Highway 71 and Hwy 200.

P

On the drive north from Park Rapids on Highway 71 visitors can ďŹ nd several quaint shops and recreation areas to stop at along the way. Also, some fabulous restaurants are located just off of Highway 71 that are sure to satisfy any appetite. Itasca State Park encompasses Lake Itasca, the ofďŹ cial source of the Mississippi River, and a scenic area of northern Minnesota that has remained relatively unchanged from its natural state.

Established in 1891, Itasca is Minnesota’s oldest state park. Today, the park totals more than 32,000 acres and includes more than 100 lakes. Stand under towering pines at Preacher’s Grove. Visit the Itasca Indian Cemetery or Wegmann’s Cabin, landmarks of centuries gone by. Camp under the stars, or stay the night at the historic Douglas Lodge or cabins. Explore Wilderness Drive past the 2,000-acre Wilderness Sanctuary, one of Minnesota’s seven National Natural Landmarks. But the main attraction will continue to be walking across the headwaters of the Mississippi River on stones at the mouth of Lake Itasca. But there are plenty of other activities to do at the park. Other outdoor activities include taking an excursion boat on Lake Itasca, exploring along Wilderness Drive, biking or hiking along more that 30 miles of designated trails, ďŹ shing in one

Mary Gibbs Mississippi Headwaters Center The Mary Gibbs Mississippi Headwaters Center opened in 2005 and affords a “river of stories for guests. The visitor center is named after the brave young park commissioner, Mary Gibbs. The “Rivers of the World sculpture is the focal point, interpretive signs identify the earth’s waterways and the Centennial Plaque, Time Capsule and International Peace Pole also engage visitors.

the area’s attraction for thousands of years. The changes in transportation are documented through the eras – from Native American travel and trade, to US settlement and expansion to logging. Along the trail to the Headwaters, kiosks draw guests to learn the river’s story with a natural history angle. Park visitors become attuned to its aquatic species, birds, animals, exotic species and plants.

Douglas Lodge One historic landmark that has welcomed visitors to the park since the beginning of the 20th century is Douglas Lodge. The lodge, a twostory pine log building at the south end of Lake Itasca, has been serving guests since 1905. Few changes have been made to the original lodge, which was built with green, newly cut pine logs harvested in the park.

Jacob V. Brower Visitor Center Outdoor exhibits in a portico allow the center to be open 365 days a year and as visitors enter the portico, they are greeted by quotes from the park’s premier explorers – Ozawindib, Henry Schoolcraft, Jacob V. The Jacob V. Brower Visitor Center – the largest visitor center in any of Minnesota’s state parks – starts its ďŹ fth year of service in May. The 13,000square-foot facility has exhibits on the Ojibwe, explorer and pioneer history of the area around Itasca. Land surveyor Jacob Brower lobbied hard to designate this area as a state park in 1891 to protect the pines from logging.

river excursion C

anoeing is prevalent along the rivers throughout the Park Rapids area. Fishing, swimming, camping and photography enthusiasts will especially enjoy a serene river excursion. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) recommends planning a canoe trip. The local Forestry office on Highway 34 west in Park Rapids and the Park Rapids Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce on Highway 71 south have free maps available. Most people paddle two to three river miles per hour. In addition to sunscreen and bottled water, don’t forget to bring life jackets – state law requires that every person on board have a personal flotation device. Several canoe outfitters are located in the Park Rapids area that provide complete camping and canoeing equipment as well as maps and transportation to and from local access spots. Tubing is also available for those who don’t want to canoe.

Crow Wing River Trail The Crow Wing River is an excellent river for canoeing. The nearly 115-mile river is perfect for family excursions. Quieter stretches of the Crow Wing make excellent swimming and fishing spots. Numerous campsites dot the forested riverbanks on

6

the journey southward. The Crow Wing River flows from a chain of 11 interconnected lakes, which begins near Nevis and Akeley. The river joins the Mississippi River at Crow Wing River Park just south of Brainerd. There is no usage charge at any of the public access sites to the river, but a nominal camping fee is charged at countyadministered campsites. While there are many starting points on this trail, here is one suggestion: head to a carry-in access point roughly two miles south of Nevis on County Road 13, between Seventh and Sixth Crow Wing Lakes. Launch from there, and then paddle on the Crow Wing River through Fifth Crow Wing Lake. There is a short portage right around the Fifth Crow Wing dam and over County Road 33. Follow the river until it crosses County Road 13 once again. A public access is located on the river’s left bank. For more information, contact the Wadena County Parks Department at 218-631-7604 or the DNR at 888-646-6367.

Headwaters River Trail After checking out Itasca State Park, it’s time to paddle on the Mississippi at the Headwaters River Trail. In its first 90 miles, the Mississippi River winds through ancient lakebeds, glacial hills, wetlands, nine large lakes and narrow valleys of spruce. Rapids dot the entire river, which offers great walleye, northern pike and muskie fishing. Public rest areas are found along the route for rest, picnics and

exploration. There are also designated campsites that may be accessed from the river. Two state parks, Itasca and Lake Bemidji, offer the visitor many amenities. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources advises paddlers to have some canoe skills and patience as there are “rocky riffles, snags and beaver dams to be maneuvered around.” For more information, contact the DNR at 888-646-6367 or Itasca State Park at 266-2100. Canoe route maps are available at area Chambers of Commerce or DNR Forestry offices.

Bemidji

N ORTH to

BEMIDJI

"ACK WOODS BACK ROADS emidji is the first city on the Mississippi. The name of the city is an Ojibwe term meaning “waters crossing waters,” which refers to the Mississippi crossing lake Bemidji and flowing north before turning south and east.

B

The city offers a compilation of reasons to visit and enjoy the natural lifestyle of the community. Bemidji is located north of Park Rapids on two major U.S. Highways: Highway 71, running north and south and Highway 2 running east and west. About 12,000 people live in this city, situated on Lake Bemidji and Lake Irving, which are both fed by the Mississippi River. Including students and summer visitors, Bemidji has a rotating population of at least 16,000. Bemidji has a large movie theater and a professional theater that presents musical performances as well as variety shows. Other area amusements include golf, bowling, bingo, miniature golf, horseback riding, a waterslide, a go-cart track, racquetball, a rollerskating rink and high school and university sports. Winter recreation is provided by a curling arena, two municipal skating rinks and Buena Vista Ski Area. There are eleven area parks to enjoy, and public beaches are maintained at Diamond Point, Nymore and Cameron parks. Shopping opportunities abound in the quaint downtown district and at the mall on Paul Bunyan Drive.

Tall tales and tall timber Bemidji claims the birth of Paul Bunyan, which makes sense since Bemidji is the First City on the Mississippi River - the river that legends claim Paul created! The legend of Paul and his mighty Blue Ox, Babe goes on and on and the stories of his super powers just get bigger and better. There are giant statues of both Paul and Babe built right on the shores of Lake Bemidji to mark the spot where Paul was born. Descendants of old-time loggers say that this is the exact spot where the five giant storks delivered Paul to his parents. The huge statue of Paul

(18 feet tall and weighing 2.5 tons) stands on the shore of beautiful Lake Bemidji. Next to Paul stands a fiveton statue of Babe.

Monsters lurk in Bemidji area waters The city of Bemidji lies in the epicenter of some of the most productive muskellunge waters in the country. Every year numerous muskies over 48” long are caught, photographed and released by anglers plying their trade on the many lakes that contain sizeable muskie (or musky) populations in the Bemidji area. Closely related to the northern pike, the mighty muskies that terrorize most all other fish in northern Minnesota lakes grow to be larger and are generally more aggressive than their northern pike cousins. The battle gear required to take on these denizens of the deep is highly specialized and an experienced guide can provide tackle, rods and reels and of course inside knowledge.

FOURTH OF JULY Speaking of “rockets red glareâ€? and ďŹ reworks and “bombs bursting, the Bemidji Fourth of July celebration lasts for about ďŹ ve days based on what day of the week July 4th falls on. The Jaycees Water Carnival serves up heaping helpings of organized fun. Fireworks, a grand old summer parade, carnival and kids events are the big highlights! It’s also a great time of the year for the family to enjoy the simple pleasures Bemidji has to offer and to check out all of the summertime fun at the hundreds of lakes and picnic places in the area!

The local guides take a lot of pride in giving their clients a top-notch ďŹ shing experience with the goal of providing them the opportunity to catch that ďŹ sh of a lifetime. Typically all a customer needs is a ďŹ shing license and some rain gear. The guide will provide everything else, including of course, some great ďŹ shing tales! So how big do some of these bad boys and bad girls get? Several ďŹ sh over 50â€? have been taken, close to the coveted state record of 60 pounds plus. And again, most muskies are photographed and released back into the lake to become fatter ďŹ sh for ďŹ sherfolks to catch-andrelease next season.

Curling Bemidji claims to be the curling capitol. Over at Eveleth, about 150 miles due east of Bemidji is a huge-hockey-stick-and-puck erected on the main drag marking that city as Home of the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame. There is no giant curling-broom-and-rock erected on the main street of Bemidji, yet, but don’t be surprised if it happens. Bemidji has long been a spawning ground for champion curlers. It is also fast becoming one

It serves as a resource for the artist, art enthusiast, art buyer and the community. The Main Gallery displays national, regional, group and solo shows, while Gallery X2 shows small exhibits and works of emerging artists. Each gallery features a new exhibit each month from February to December. Organizations in the area include the Bemidji Symphony Orchestra, Bemidji Community Theater, Paul Bunyan Playhouse, Headwaters School of Music & the Arts and Headwaters Science Center.

The community of Lake George is perhaps known best for its blueberry festival and the lake is known for great fishing. It is located six miles east of Itasca State Park on 71/200 towards the Kabekona Corner.

Concordia Language Villages

The lake itself is a spring fed lake and a great place to catch pan fish, walleye, northern pike and bass. The water is clear, clean and inviting. The Jack Weinmann Family Memorial Guest Quarters at St. Francis Lodge on Lake George opened in 2010. The retreat center for nuns started out as a vision and prayer of Sal Di Leo, a man raised by Catholic nuns in the 1960s.

Visit the unique educational and cultural grounds of Concordia Language Villages in Bemidji. Students come to live the culture and speak the language of 14 different countries with five permanent villages located in Bemidji: Norwegian, German, Finnish, French and Spanish. Special events to the tradition of the village you’re visiting are available. International Days give the public an opportunity to visit and experience the villages.

Sanford Center The Sanford Center, located on the south shore of Lake Bemidji, is a signature sports and entertainment facility. It is home to the Bemidji State University hockey teams. The center is approximately 185,000 square feet and includes all amenities required to host concerts and other community events. It can hold a variety of civic, convention and entertainment events.

Laporte Laporte is perhaps best known for its local winery, the Forestedge Winery. The winery has an art festival each summer with wine tasting and arts and crafts. This year it’s scheduled for Aug. 20-21. The Paul Bunyan Trail also passes through town and there is a trailhead. The town is located in Lakeport Township and nestled into the southeast corner of Garfield Lake. Laporte literally means the door, or the gate, in French.

Each summer, the small town hosts a three-day festival that is focused on blueberries. This year it’s scheduled for July 29-31. The festival includes a blueberry pancake breakfast, a blueberry ball and a blueberry square dance. There is an educational booth on blueberries. A pie sale, a pig roast, and the Firemen’s Bean Feed are also great fun. There is a quilt show, an arts and crafts show and a flea market. South of Highway 71, on Payne Lake is the Lake George Community Park. Swimming beach, baseball field, picnic tables, picnic shelter, playground, toilets and public access.

ackensack is located on the eastern shores of Birch Lake. Within a 10-mile radius, there are 127 lakes, a state forest and the Chippewa National Forest. Wildlife such as deer, black bear, bald eagles, ďŹ shers, porcupines, timber wolves, coyotes, bobcats, loons and more can often be seen.

Hackensack is located in Cass County – about 50 miles north of Brainerd and 50 miles southeast of Bemidji; in fact, just 10 minutes from Leech Lake. The population of Hackensack is under 300 but it continues to be active. Every day at noon, the ďŹ re siren is blown.

History

The Hackensack area was originally ďŹ rst inhabited by Ojibwa Indians in 1884. In 1903, Bye Bartlett and Curo came to the area from Hackensack, N.J. and named this area after the New Jersey town. Logging was the main industry at the time and a railroad ran through Hackensack, where the Paul Bunyan Trail is now used for cycling and other recreation.

Tourism Families vacation in Hackensack to get back to the basics by renting a cabin at one of the family-friendly resorts. There is plenty to do in the Hackensack area, from hunting to ďŹ shing to spending time on the lake or having a campďŹ re. Paul Bunyan’s sweetheart and wife, Lucette, has a statue in Hackensack, standing guard over the town. While the town explodes with

visitors during June, July and August, visitors come year round to see the fall colors in September and October and take in the annual sawing competition. In the winter, visitors come to ice ďŹ sh, snowmobile or cozy up to a warm ďŹ re.

Paul Bunyan Byway Nationally designated in 2005, the 54-mile route passes through Hackensack. The route has wide paved shoulders perfect for walking, strolling, hiking or running. Several public accesses and two public beaches provide plenty of chances to ďŹ sh, boat, swim, ski and play in the sand. The byway has 14 interpretive panel kiosks dotting the byway route that offer a little truth and a little lore about the history of the area, as seen through the wink and wit of Paul Bunyan.

Welcome to the Hackensack area! Home of Paul Bunyan’s Sweetheart ~ wife of 172 years ~ Lucette! She stands guard over the town.

Walker WORLD SAW COMPETITION The carvers invited to participate in the World Saw Competition at ArtisTree Fields have championed other national and international events. This year the World Saw Championship Competition will be held Labor Day weekend at ArtisTree Fields two miles south of Hackensack on Highway 371.

It is the wood as well as the shape and size of the log that can make or break an artist’s design or vision. In competitions, competitors are assigned their log in a

log lottery but they will often swap with other carvers to ensure they will get a log that will enable them to realize their idea. If the log of choice is not available they better have a back up design. Pine is the most common while some artists prefer cedar and redwood; carving them is said to be like cutting though cake. The harder the wood the greater the strain on the saws and the arms, shoulders and backs of the carvers.

The World Saw Championship Competition Labor Day weekend at ArtisTree Fields is a four-day event, Sept. 1-4. The competition includes a masterpiece carving along with quick carves. All art carvings are auctioned to the public. This Labor Day there will be more exciting and amazing additions to the event. Come enjoy this great family event.

Prices Subject to Change

It is the carvers themselves, part athlete, part artist, part entertainer, that carefully and quickly bring out the creations from the wood. Purists in the craft use only the chainsaw, the tip, the sharp (top) side of the chain, and the side of the chain. Depending on the size of the bar and chain and the part of the bar used, an artist can achieve surfaces that are sander smooth. This is called the “All Saw” competition. Many artists also use sanders, power drills and rotary tools such as Dremels. Some burn detail or color into the wood with hand held torches or use paint to enliven their sculptures. To ensure protection and enhance shine and beauty almost all artists apply a protective coating to their art.

Besides being a good place to enjoy the outdoors, the small town offers plenty of other attractions with two theaters. Many artists also make their home in Akeley. Among them is a chainsaw carver, just west of town on Highway 34. The former school now includes a public library, archery range and a used clothing and furniture shop. During the summer of 2010, a community garden was established near the former school. Several organized events throughout the summer lead ATV riders

through the managed network of trails in the Paul Bunyan State Forest. Culinary opportunities include a local family style restaurant, an ice cream shop, a nearby German eatery and a burger joint tucked away in the woods. Grab a pizza or gas up at the convenience store and be sure to shop the quaint antique shop just across the street. The many resorts around the lake-rich area offer amenities and shopping for a vacation to remember.

Fall is also a popular time to visit the Park Rapids area, with plenty of places to hike, canoe, ďŹ sh and bike. Driving around for a look at colorful trees in the fall is also a popular activity.

The railroad arrived in 1884 and the city was named as the county seat of Hubbard County in 1887. The local economy is based on tourism, agriculture, logging and light manufacturing with a strong service sector. Tourism in the area was a thriving industry starting in the late 1880s. Most came to the area via the railroad with the resorters picking up their guests at the train depot and transporting them to their respective resorts. The resorters would use roadways as well as waterways to the resorts.

The downtown reconstruction and revitalization project is many years in the making, with several committees making decisions about streetscapes and other details over the years. Construction was completed on the northern four blocks of Main in 2010 and side streets will be completed in 2011.

!REA 3TATE &ORESTS he Minnesota Department of Natural Resources manages state forestlands for all types of outdoor recreation, including camping, mountain biking, off-highway vehicle riding, hunting, fishing, trapping, hiking, horseback riding and picking berries and mushrooms.

T

The DNR is only one of many landowners in these forested areas. Please be aware of private property boundaries while enjoying the scenic beauty of state forestlands.

Paul Bunyan State Forest Divided into two units, one north and one south, the Paul Bunyan State Forest offers miles of hiking trails and trails for off-road vehicles, as well as areas for snowmobiling, horseback riding and mountain biking. Hiking trails include a segment of the North Country Trail, part of the national North Country Scenic Trail, begun in the 1960s to connect the Appalachian and Pacific Crest trails. Through efforts of the Itasca Moraine Chapter of the North Country Trail Association, the trail has been extended from the Chippewa National Forest to Steamboat Pass, near Spur Lake in the Paul Bunyan State Forest, a total of 21.4 miles from state Hwy 64.

Huntersville State Forest Huntersville State Forest boasts approximately 150 miles of logging trails, which are open for motorized and nonmotorized use. The forest is located in northern Wadena County, roughly 12 miles southeast of Park Rapids. Five campsites are found in Huntersville State Forest. All offer picnic tables, fire

24

Minnesota Destinations 2011

rings, firewood, toilets and well water. Most have nice swimming areas adjacent to the campground and canoe landing. A 22-mile horse trail, featuring two loops and a river crossing, starts at the Shell City Horse Campground.

Two Inlets State Forest The Two Inlets State Forest is located in Becker County. From Park Rapids, take Highway 71 north 10 miles to CSAH 41. Turn left, travel 1.5 miles and then turn right. The Richard A. Gartner Memorial Hungryman Forest Campground and Day Use Area is one mile north on Co. Rd. 88. Boat accesses are provided on Hungryman and Cedar lakes. Pack a lunch and head to the Cedar Lake Picnic Area. The South Two Inlets Forest Road traverses the forest from east to west. It is open to public travel. Two Inlets Lake provides very good fishing for all warm water species.

Chippewa National Forest Trails The total Chippewa National Forest acreage is 1.6 million acres, with 660,000 acres managed by the Chippewa National Forest. The Chippewa, the first ever National Forest, is over half water and its terrain is a result of the glaciers that blanketed northern Minnesota 10,000 years ago. There are over 700 lakes, 920 miles of streams and 150,000 acres of wetlands. The Forest is home to the largest breeding population of bald eagles in the lower 48 states. It has been inhabited by peoples for thousands of years and is home to logging history and Civilian Conservation Corps sites.

Two Inlets State Forest Trails Over 26,000 acres set in a landscape that’s gently rolling to hilly, with scattered lowlands. Two Inlets Trail provides over 27 miles of snowmobile trail that connects to other area trails. Two Inlets Lake provides good fishing. This state forest is known for excellent hunting of deer, ruffed grouse and small game. Indian Creek Water Impoundment provides habitat for waterfowl. Located about 10 miles north of Park Rapids west of Highway 71.

Smoky Hills State Forest Trails Rolling-to-moderately steep slopes characterize this nearly 24,000-acre forest. Smoky Hills offers 30 miles of snowmobile trails and exceptional hunting for deer and grouse. South half of the forest is good for fall foliage viewing. Pick fruit and mushrooms. Located 10 miles west of Park Rapids off Hwy 34.

Huntersville State Forest Trails This 16,448-acre forest has rolling-to-flat land, famed for its jack and Norway pine mixed with aspen, spruce, tamarack and northern hardwoods and clear streams. The major attraction is the beauty of the Shell and Crow Wing Rivers that flow through the forest. The excellent boating and canoeing route traverses 80 miles of river. There are two canoe outfitters in the area. Wilderness campsites occur at three-to seven-mile intervals. Located south of Park Rapids, off Hwy 87 on CR 25.

Paul Bunyan State Forest Trails Over 72,000 acres of terrain

that’s rough and hilly, with many tiny ponds and bogs. Paul Bunyan State Forest has 50 miles of groomed snowmobile trails and 15 miles of ungroomed trails. The hiking and cross-country ski trail located near Mantrap Lake is two miles in length. Located just north of Akeley on Hwy. 64.

White Earth State Forest About 160,502 acres of the forest is rolling hills and lakes, 4/5th of which is variegated forest and 1/5th is lowland brush and marsh. Almost all of this forest is within the boundaries of the White Earth Reservation. The Shuttlebug Nature Trail is popular for summer hiking. It has 70 miles of marked and groomed snowmobile trails. Here are several routes into the White Earth State Forest: 20 miles north of Park Rapids on Hwy 71, then west on Hwy 113; 14 miles east of Detroit lakes on Hwy 34 then about 15 miles north on Becker 37; six or seven miles east of Waubun on Hwy 113; and 20 miles east of Mahnomen on Hwy 200.

Smoky Hills State Forest Located 10 miles west of Park Rapids, the Smoky Hills State Forest was established in 1935 to perpetuate forest management and fire protection. Presently there are almost 24,000 acres of land within the boundaries of the state forest. The southern portion of Smoky Hills offers an excellent opportunity to view fall colors on its rolling, forested slopes. While there is no designated campground, camping is permitted with some conditions. Contact the DNR for complete rules.

Park Rapids

,AKE #OUNTRY 3CENIC "YWAY The Lake Country Scenic Byway is an 88-mile corridor along Highway 34 between Detroit Lakes and Walker with a spur north from Park Rapids on Highway 71 to Itasca State Park. Following the Lake Country Scenic Byway, visitors discover many places to explore: Itasca State Park, the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge and Leech Lake. Along the lake-dappled countryside, they will view winding rivers, forests and a patchwork of farmland. Experiences for travelers can include fantastic ďŹ shing, north woods hiking, scenic biking, golďŹ ng and more. In a pleasing twist, you’ll ďŹ nd that two of the largest locally owned and operated music festivals in the entire nation are not far from either end of the Lake Country Scenic Byway.

Heartland Trail The Heartland Trail is an old railroad bed that starts in Park Rapids and travels through Dorset, Nevis, Akeley, Walker and ends up at Cass Lake. It is a 49 mile multiple use trail, open to non-motorized use during the spring, fall and summer for bicycling, hiking and in-line skating. Users can expect to see a wide variety of wildlife and wildowers along the way. In the winter, the Heartland Trail is part of a network of groomed riding trails in the area.

The Paul Bunyan Trail The Paul Bunyan Trail is a bike trail and snowmobile trail that starts at Baxter and includes 69.6 miles of paved trail to Walker, 39.5 miles of unpaved trail that weaves and bobs between Walker and Bemidji and then ďŹ ve miles of paved trail from Lake Bemidji State Park to Co. Rd. 20 across the Mississippi River trestle to 5th and Gould. The total trail length is 110 miles and when completed, the Paul Bunyan State Trail will also connect with the Blue Ox Trail forming one of the longest rail to trail conversions in North America – 210 miles.

D ETROIT LAKES 9EAR ROUND FUN ormer Mayor Larry Buboltz once said if you’re bored in Detroit Lakes during the summer, go to the doctor because there’s something wrong with you. He may just be right.

Detroit Lakes plays host to a wide assortment of entertaining activities, events and festivals — regardless of the time of year. Spring months can find you searching through booths at the Street Faire at the Lakes for the perfect treasure, or looking in the treetops for the one-of-a kind bird during the Festival of Birds. Spring is one last chance to take in a breath of air before the never-ending summer events begin. Summer, which doubles the population of Detroit Lakes,

hosts the area's largest festival with WE Fest and celebrations like the Northwest Water Carnival. Not to mention the endless swimming, boating, biking, golfing and hiking that can be done at any time. Detroit Lakes boasts 412 lakes within 25 miles and a mile-long beach. During the winter, a village of fish houses can be found on Detroit Lake and snowmobilers can find miles and miles of trails starting in Detroit Lakes. And regardless of the season, there’s always trails through Sucker Creek Preserve and Dunton Locks for hiking, cross country skiing and just simply enjoying nature. There’s also plenty of quaint shopping to do and several coffee shops to rest at and meet some friends for coffee.

Detroit Lakes WHITE EARTH POW WOW

SHADY HOLLOW FLEA MARKET

The White Earth Pow Wow is Becker County’s oldest, continuous event.

Do you yearn to find unique, one of a kind treasures? Are you a fan of the PBS Show Antiques Road Show? If you answered yes to any of the poised questions above, then there is only one place to visit this summer, and that is the Shady Hollow Flea Market!

In the past there have been 700 or more dancers and 20 drum groups. Organizers are expecting good numbers this year as well. The 143rd annual event will be held Friday through Sunday, June 10-12, in White Earth village. The powwow will begin Friday, June 10, at 10 a.m. and traditionally starts with the veterans flag raising and pipe ceremonies. These ceremonies will be repeated Saturday and Sunday, June 11-12, at 10 a.m. Dance warm-ups have traditionally started at 7 p.m. Friday. This is a cultural event and everybody is welcome to attend and share the White Earth Nation’s cultural activities. The powwow grounds are located near the reservation tribal headquarters in the village of White Earth. Last year’s celebration fea-

tured a couples dance, men’s chicken dance and grass dance, and women’s jingle dress dance. The grand entries are traditionally at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. There will be numerous food and craft vendors at the powwow grounds all three days. The committee traditionally serves a free feast on Saturday and Sunday at 5 p.m. The powwow is open to the general public, and there is no charge to attend.

Shady Hollow Flea Market, located about five miles south of Detroit Lakes on Highway 59, is one of the largest flea markets in the area. The 15-acre flea market extraordinaire boasts over 100 booths. Customers come from South Dakota to Iowa; Minneapolis to Fargo — a wide array of people is always the best part about the flea market.

its finale, Labor Day weekend Sept. 5. The three-day Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day weekends are always big for the market. The flea market is usually very busy early in the day when the “serious” shoppers come out. Then it builds up again in the afternoon when the more casual treasure hunters arrive. The best part about coming out early in the season, is you get the first pick of a variety of items. From stoneware collectibles to unique baseball cards, it is always first-come, first-served at the flea market. For more information, visit the Internet web site: www. shadyhollowmarket.com

People like the asparagus salesman, or the weed wreath lady or the caramel popcorn vendor. They are the ones that make flea market shopping a breath of fresh air. Shady Hollow opens May 29 and is opened every Sunday throughout the summer until

2OLLAG S Thresher Reunion very Labor Day weekend since 1954, generations of threshermen and women have gotten together to relive the tradition of the good old days and bring the past to life, for the enjoyment of young and old alike.

E

The annual Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion near Rollag will be held Sept. 2-5. This year is the “Year of the Bulldog,” since it will feature Avery (and New-Way) engines. The Avery Company was an farm tractor builder, famed for its undermounted engine, in that the tractor more resembled a railroad engine in a farmer’s field, than a conventional farm steam engine. The company put out a large line of products, including steam engines beginning in 1891. The company started with a return flue style, and later went into the undermount style replete with pugnacious bulldog on the smokebox door. The annual Steam Threshers Reunion is a great family occasion. Here’s an idea of what to expect: As you enter the reunion grounds, located at Rollag

34

Minnesota Destinations 2011

— about 10 miles south of Highway 10 off Clay County Road 32 — you will cross an old railroad track. But this track is far from being abandoned. It is actually used exclusively by Engine No. 353, a 500-passenger steam locomotive that travels the 2.5-mile track around the reunion grounds several times daily. A short distance away, at the north end of the exhibit grounds, you will find a fullyoperational, Model 21 steampowered shovel moving gravel, and on Gunderson Pond, a small tugboat pushes logs to the Briden-Roen sawmill to make lumber. These are just a few of the demonstration exhibits found on the Rollag grounds. In the 17-acre exposition area on the southwest end of the grounds, there are a variety of exhibits, everything from a vintage Parker merry-goround — powered by steam, of course — to a rare Prony Brake demonstration, which can test the maximum horsepower of an engine. A working blacksmith shop, log cabin museum, print shop, mercantile and general store

are just a few of the many exhibit buildings located on the grounds. There are daily demonstrations of equipment that uses real horsepower — the four-legged kind — starting at 10 a.m., along with a steam-powered lumber-sawing at the sawmill, a steam hammer stamping souvenir plates and a variety of other machine demonstrations going on continuously throughout the grounds. But the fun isn’t all for the mechanically minded. There’s women’s activities including skill demonstrations of everything from lace-making to cloth and basket-weaving, kiddie rides and activities (including the merry-go-round), constant musical entertainment, and, of course, food. Several area churches will serve full meals at scheduled meal times, and there will also be short-order fare served throughout the day. There are daily parades; a style show each day; steam and gas threshing, lumber sawing, and a number of other demonstrations. And then there’s the live music. If you need to step in from the heat, occasional rainfall or coal smoke, you can usually find some type of live music program taking place in just about any building, at just

about any time of day. Starting in the early hours of the morning, music starts in Nelson Hall on top of the hill, you can see square dancing doing on directly behind the Nelson, and in the afternoon you can see the Style Show in the TMB building and grab a bite to eat at the same time. Scattered about grounds, you will always find musicians ‘jamming’ with each or under a gazebo, in the Print shop, or just under the shade of a tree. There is an admission fee for those over age 14, which includes all entertainment, rides and demonstrations. Food and souvenirs are sold separately. All proceeds from the event are put back into WMSTR to maintain the grounds and machinery. The Rollag reunion gates open at 6 a.m. daily, and stay open well into the evening. All evening programs and musical entertainment are free, and there are free rides on the full sized train, one mile around the show grounds. There are free rides on the small train. There are free shuttle wagons to ride around the large show area as well. For more information, visit the WMSTR web site at www.rolag. com or call 218-937-5404.

WHAT WILL THE MINNESOTA FISHING OPENER BE LIKE? Will the weather be friendly for anglers? Will the boat motor start? Will the walleyes bite? Is there enough bait? Those questions are traditionally on the minds of anglers and bait dealers as they ready for Saturday, May 14. Most answers won’t be known until shortly after Friday turns into Saturday at the stroke of midnight — and anglers can get onto their favorite lakes once more. Then, anglers can catch and legally keep northern pike, walleyes and lake trout. DNR Fisheries staff members collect walleye eggs and sperm for the hatchery at Dunton Locks County Park. The momentum picks up when the weather warms. The Becker County Sheriff ’s Department boat and water safety ofďŹ cers install marker buoys in the channel of Big and Little Detroit lakes prior to the opener. Like anglers, the deputies are

also preparing for the angling and boating season. Boaters are advised to be especially careful during the opener because water temperatures are cold. Anglers should wear life jackets while in their boats instead of just laying them near their seats. If you happen to fall out of the boat and you’re not wearing a life jacket, chances are you’re going to have a tough time getting back into the boat. Anglers and boaters should also abstain from consuming alcohol until back on land, since drinking not only dulls a person’s action, but also hastens hypothermia if in the water for a prolonged period of time. And it’s a good idea to test the operation of your watercraft, especially the motor, before going out onto the lakes. Bass opener for most of Minnesota (outside the Iron Range) is May 28. The muskie season opens June 4. The Big and Little Detroit population is doing well. Muskies are also found in lakes Sallie and Melissa as they are able to move downstream through Muskrat Lake.

Perham/New York Mills

P*OURNEY THROUGH 0ERHAM .EW 9ORK -ILLS ERHAM/NEW YORK MILLS area welcomes you /TTERTAIL 6ERGAS AND 7ADENA

erham is the center for surrounding agriculture and tourism in East Otter Tail County. You’ll find plenty of restaurants, bars, antique shops, gift shops, and grocery stores.

P

Little Pine and Big Pine Lakes are just north of Perham and there’s a lot of development going on in the area. It has been predicted that the lake country in central Minnesota (including all or portions of Becker, Otter Tail, Douglas, Hubbard, Cass, and Crow Wing Counties) will be the fastest growing segment of the state in the next 10 years— surpassing the growth of the Twin Cities suburbs. The newly renamed Heritage Festival (formerly the Perham Pioneer Festival) takes place each year the third weekend in August. For nearly 40 years the festival celebrates the first settlers of the area with folk art demonstrations, re-enactment events, and concerts by Folk and Bluegrass musicians in a beautiful setting of log buildings on the prairie. Summer 2011 will bring another year of International Turtle Races to Perham. Join in the fun every Wednesday, rain or shine, June through August at 10:30 a.m. in the City Hall Park. Be sure to pick up your turtle souvenirs and t-shirts at the information center near the races.

EAST OTTER TAIL FAIR RETURNS IN 2011 Perham is host to the East Otter Tail Fair, which will take place this year on July 21-24. For over 100 years, the fair has been a time of family fun. The 32-acre fairgrounds are located on County Road 8 in the heart of Perham. This is a traditional county fair, complete with livestock barns, 4-H exhibits, and commerce/industry booths. The midway is a kaleidoscope of color with modern carnival rides and games.

/TTERTAIL a growing lakeside city Ottertail is located on the eastern shores of Otter Tail Lake on Highways 78 and 108. It is one of the fastest growing communities in rural Minnesota. One of the city’s most prominent landmarks is the giant otter statue. The city’s “petâ€? otter is a 10-foot-high, 14foot long creation from 1,200 pieces of welded steel. Hidden inside the critter is a time capsule containing community information and photos. Every summer thousands of people ock to the small town of Ottertail for the annual Smokin’ Iron Truck and Tractor Pull. The two-day event is hosted in the city’s center, on a track located behind the water tower off of Highway 108.

This year’s Smokin’ Iron event will be held on Friday, June 17 and Saturday, June 18. Over 80 pullers from across the nation will participate in this summer’s event. On Friday evening, August 12, the Ottertail Rod and Gun Club hosts the annual demolition derby. Hundreds of spectators ďŹ ll the derby area near the Ottertail water tower, off of Highway 108. The derby is the ofďŹ cial kick-off for the city’s summer celebration. On August 13, the day after the demo derby, is Ottertail’s summer parade, one of the largest small-town parades in the area. The annual Otter Fest Parade is planned to coincide with a day full of community-wide activities, and ďŹ reworks light up the sky at night.

PHELPS MILL HOST TO AREA’S LARGEST ART AND CRAFT SHOW

Small town known for big things

The annual Phelps Mill Festival will be held on July 9-10, 2011. The show is held at the Phelps Mill Park, near Battle Lake—one of the most charming spots in Minnesota. There is family fun and entertainment for all ages.

Located on Highway 10 between Perham and Wadena, this rural community is home to the “world’s finest fishing boat” at Lund Boat Co. and garners national attention every year for the Great American Think-Off.

Held yearly on the second weekend in July, the festival brings together both artists and artisans in a display of various high quality works. Adding to the intrigue of the peaceful setting of the park is the participation of guest performers appearing on stage and around the grounds.

Each year the Great American Think-Off solicits the opinions of arm-chair philosophers from across the country. This year’s question is “Does poetry matter?” Four finalists will be chosen from hundreds of essays submitted to debate the question in front of a live audience at the New York Mills school on June 11. The winner of the debate is crowned “America’s Greatest Thinker.”

The main attraction of this event, of course, is the talent of many diverse artists and crafters. From fine art, to jewelry, to country crafts, there is something here for everyone. For more information, check out: www.phelpsmillfestival.com.

Other annual summer events include the July 1 Lund Mania fishing tourney and town celebration, the Corn Feed Festival and Finn Creek Summer Folk Festival, both held in August. New York Mills has a rich history of blending agriculture, industry and the arts, with all three prevalent in daily life.

MOTORBIKING FOR A CAUSE: RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE RIDE The Ronald McDonald House Benefit Motorcycle Ride is held the second Saturday in June each year. The event draws hundreds to the town to benefit a good cause and is among the largest charity motorcycle rides of its kind.

FINN CREEK FESTIVAL CELEBRATES FINNISH HERITAGE This annual festival that takes place during the last weekend of August celebrates the Finnish heritage and culture that are deeply rooted in the New York Mills area. What began as a family farm southeast of NY Mills has turned into an outdoor museum featuring a country school, church, summer kitchen, dipping well, granary, sawmill and log corncrib. Other activities during the festival include entertainment, demonstrations, grain threshing, crafts and tractor pulls. This year’s festival will take place August 27-28.

“BIG SPLASH” IS A WET, WILD WATERPARK WONDER

VIKINGLAND BAND FESTIVAL Every year, on the last Sunday in June, the streets of Alexandria come alive with the sound of music.

One of the biggest indoor waterparks in the nation is at the Arrowwood Resort and Conference Center, located about four miles north of Alexandria on Lake Darling.

On June 26 the Midwest’s finest high school marching bands gather in Alexandria for the Vikingland Band Festival parade competition. Summer parade bands are at their peak in June and pull out all the stops as they perform on the city’s extra-wide main street.

This waterpark wonder is 38,000square-foot. The water park offers a wide variety of water activities, including waterslides, a “Lazy River” floating inner tube ride, a lily pad water walk and a tropical whirlpool spa and waterfall. There’s also a children’s play fort in a zero-inchentry pool.

The Vikingland Band Festival parade begins early afternoon Sunday and proceeds along Broadway from 4th Avenue to 15th Avenue. For information about the band festival call the Chamber at (320) 763-3161 or visit its website at www.alexandriamn.org.

For more information, call (320) 7621124 or visit the Big Splash Website at www.arrowwoodresort.com.

4TH OF JULY — WATCH FOR A STORM! Although there are several fireworks displays around the area on the 4th of July, one of the most spectacular is Star Storm. Those who go to Lake Darling near Alexandria on July 4 will enjoy a spectacular 20-minute fireworks display set to music. The annual display, which is designed to be enjoyed either from land or from the lake, is organized by Arrowwood Resort. Folks can watch the show from the front lawn of Arrowwood, which overlooks the lake, or they can boat over to see the display. Watchers are encouraged to tune into KXRA-FM, 92.3, for the show.
