How are you using your leadership skills to better the community, workplace and family?
I enjoy sharing my various experiences, from past and present, with all the groups I’m able to interact with. There’s so much to be learned through these involvement opportunities, and the networking is invaluable.

What is your favorite thing about living in the Alexandria area?
Member of Calvary Lutheran Church, Alexandria.
Being able to grow professionally, spend time with family and friends, and enjoy my hobbies all within this community. The short and simple commute to work sure can’t be beat either!
Volunteer in a variety of local events throughout the year. Previous Involvement: Locally coached youth girls hockey with Alexandria Area Hockey Association for 4 years, and sat on the strategic planning committee at the Alexandria Golf Club. MATA PR Committee Chair for 4 years, member of AAOE Needs Assessment Committee, Great Lakes Athletic Trainers Association (GLATA) PR Committee (4 years), NATA Healthcare Administrators Work Group (2 years). Who has been the most influential person in your life?
Dr. Jeff Brand and Mike Doyle for allowing me to shadow them back in high school to see if sports medicine and orthopedics was a career direction I’d want to pursue … now I have the opportunity to work with both of them each day for the past 10 years! Also, my parents – Rick and Diane Nelson – for all their continued support as I’ve worked to achieve my goals.
Obtaining my MBA in Healthcare degree from University of St. Thomas, while working full time.

What is your community involvement?
Aside from working with members of the community on a variety of building projects, I have volunteered for a number of different organizations including Habitat for Humanity, The Salvation Army, The Maritime Museum, and the Alexandria Area High School. I am also an active member on the Alexandria Planning Commission.

What accomplishments have you succeeded with in your chosen career?
The biggest accomplishment for a young designer is becoming a licensed architect. I was able to achieve licensure within four years of college graduation and I am now licensed in Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota. Other accomplishments include having significant roles on various award-winning and high performing building projects, including the LEED Silver Alexandria Area High School, Living Word Lutheran Church (North Dakota AIA Merit Award) and the LEED Platinum Gorecki Alumni Center (University of North Dakota).

How are you using your leadership skills to better the community, workplace and family?
In the community, I am always looking for new opportunities to be involved or lead volunteer efforts with my peers. By serving on a city commission, I feel I am utilizing my knowledge, experience, leadership,
and decision-making skills to better the community at a governmental level. As an architect at JLG Architects, I strive to set a positive example as a leader and mentor to young staff on new or large projects. I am also becoming more involved in our company’s business development and marketing efforts, which means having a key role in the direction and success of the overall company. At home, my leadership skills are focused on being a strong and loving husband and father, and instilling in my two daughters strong family values, respect, and responsibility.

What is your favorite thing about living in the Alexandria area?
My favorite thing about living in the Alexandria area is by far the outdoor recreation. I try to enjoy as many outdoor opportunities as possible including sailing, golfing, sand volleyball, fishing, riding bike on the Central Lakes Trail, or just taking a walk in the park with my family and dogs.

Who has been the most influential person in your life?
The most influential people in my life thus far have been my parents. Both of my parents were teachers and, at a young age, they bestowed upon me a lifelong passion for learning. They also taught me, leading by example, the values of family, love, respect, and hard work. Without their efforts, I would not be where I am today, with great opportunities for growth and leadership in my career and community.

In addition, I hold a Master of Business Administration in Finance and Leadership, which has opened up an avenue for me to have a unique impact on our community and the world.

Although the many lakes, parks, hiking and biking trails, and attractions are amazing, it’s the people in this community that make Alexandria such an amazing place to live, work and play.

Although there have been many people throughout my life that have had a profound impact, I would have to say my wife Kimberly has been one of the most influential. Her love is selfless. Her joy is contagious. Her peace is comforting. Her patience is relieving. Her kindness is plentiful. Her goodness is freeing. Her faithfulness is addicting. Her gentleness is sweet, and her character radiates self-control. She is a blessing and an inspiration.

Alexandria is growing as a result of our community actively promoting its growth. It is exciting to be a part of this energy. Then, of course, there is also the awesome balance the area offers. It’s a terrific place to build a career, raise a well-rounded family, and enjoy the peacefulness or excitement the area continually offers, whether it’s our fresh air, lakes, or the arts.

I take most pride in helping individuals establish themselves in life, whether it’s building a business, buying a piece of real estate, or helping them create an estate plan to pass along the product of their lifelong accomplishments.

Great question! I’ve been fortunate enough to have a significant number of individuals positively influence me and the decisions I’ve made. My parents have been the most influential. Leading by example, they’ve instilled the principles of hard work and integrity. Then, of course, there’s my wife, the ultimate partner! There’s not enough room in the paper to state those reasons.

What is your involvement?
community
My involvement in the community includes professional and personal organizations and passions. I have been a member of AAYP for the last three years and have made many new connections while attending meetings and events. I am also currently on the Board of Directors for the Convention and Tourism Bureau of Parkers Prairie. Last year I also started coaching at Discovery Middle School. During the winter I coach eighth grade girls basketball and in the spring I coach seventh grade girl’s softball. Developing skills, encouraging joy and building confidence with the girls inspires me to be better in all facets of life. On a personal level I love the outdoors and fishing. Any chance I have to teach our youth how to fish and conserve our lakes is a bonus. I have also participated in a couple of kids fishing seminars at community outings.

What career accomplishments are you most proud of so far?
So far I am most proud of being awarded with General Manager of the Year for all Crossings by Grandstay Hotels in 2015. I have a huge passion for hospitality and I am proud of myself for earning a position as a general manager of a hotel. I feel blessed every day that I was able to reach some of my goals in such a short period of time. I have been the general manager at Crossings Inn and Suites of Parkers Prairie for three years now and I look forward to continued growth with my hotel.

How are you using your leadership skills to better the community, workplace and family?
In the community I feel my presence as a middle school basketball and softball coach I get the chance to teach and show the kids how to be a leader by setting a good example. That also trickles down to the parents of the kids I am coaching. In the workplace I use many leadership skills to run a solid team. I wear many hats as a general manager of a hotel, although I feel leadership to be one of the most important. I use my leadership skills to show and guide my team in the right direction for the overall scope of best in class hospitality at my hotel.

from each and every one before me to apply to the way we shaped the telethon in 2014. Each and every year the foundation is able to put together an amazing show filled with great talent from around the area in order to raise funds to provide meals and toys to families in our area that may be in need during the Christmas holiday.
My favorite thing about living the Alexandria Area is fishing and being on the lake. Not only is this one of my favorite personal things to do summer and winter, it also helps me a lot in my profession. Fishing has become a huge part of my day to day work at the hotel. I am always finding and thinking of new ways to attract out of town people to the area for fishing. One thing I am most proud of in this aspect is being able to be a part of bringing the PMTT Championship Musky Tournament to Lake Miltona this October. PMTT or Professional Musky Tournament Trail is a national tournament series for musky fishermen from all over the United States. To have this opportunity to bring this tournament to our small community is absolutely amazing! I also love being able to share that passion with guests that stay at my hotel. Knowing that they want to hear “the scoop” that day about the local fishing from me, makes me smile.

What is your favorite thing about living in the Alexandria area?

Who has been the most influential person in your life?
My most influential person in my life has been my mom, Polly Schuster. Not only has she been an amazing mother my entire life, she has molded me into the professional person I am today, teaching me great work ethic and how to be humble. My first real job was working as a housekeeper when I was 15 at a local Alexandria hotel that she managed. Seeing how she worked and watching what she did day to day gave me the drive to want to walk in her footsteps someday. As I worked up the chain at hotels in Alexandria, I knew my goal was to someday be the general manager at a hotel. I knew it took motivation, drive and passion to be a good manager. However, the way I saw my mom work I knew that is what I wanted someday. She helped me, coached me, and I still turn to her for helpful advice often. She is a huge reason I am who I am today, and for that, I am thankful.

What career accomplishments are you most proud of so far?
When I started with Viking Savings I was a credit analyst and have been fortunate to work my way up to my current position as a commercial lender. My experience working in the credit department has been very beneficial to my understanding of the needs of individual businesses. This has helped a lot when working with customers to help grow their businesses through structuring of financing. It is always fun to see a business grow, whether it is a start-up or existing business. You are able to build some real great relationships with customers and many have developed into great friendships!

We are very fortunate to have many great leaders in the community! Many of them have either directly or indirectly affected the way I try to handle myself in leadership roles I have had in the past or am currently in. As the executive director of the Jingle Bells Telethon in 2014 I had many great leaders ahead of me, I was able to take something
What is your favorite thing about living in the Alexandria area?
We have such a great community in Alexandria! What is there not to like from the people, businesses, and activities that this area has to offer. I was born and raised in the area and fell in love with the water as a child. I grew up in a neighborhood that had access to the lake and remember spending all summer around the lake from fishing to water sports. We spent as much time on or around the water as possible. I have met so many great people because of the lakes and what they bring to our community.
I grew a passion for fishing at an early age with all the opportunities that the area offers. You take the lakes for granted when you live here. It wasn’t until I went to college when I realized just how nice of an area that we have here!

Who has been the most influential person in your life?
I would say that my dad has been the most influential person in my life. The biggest thing that I have learned from my dad is hard work. At a young age my dad taught me the value of a hard work ethic. He was an educator and also ran a small business with my mother. When I was younger it seemed to me like my dad was always working, whether that was at home or on the job. He was a do-it-yourself guy. I thought that he could fix anything when I broke it! I learned many things from him and continue to do so today. Even though he was always busy, he always took time to do activities with us kids.
We didn’t need an award to know that our own Adam Barnett is awesome, but we greatly appreciate the Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce for recognizing all that Adam does to make life better for our clients and communities. Thanks to JLGers like Adam,

I love seeing our downtown shops buzzing with business and the public beaches and lakes overflowing with families. It is a priceless feeling!

My parents have been great role models for me, from childhood and continuing today. They have instilled in me the importance of God leading my life, teaching me humility and appreciation for all He has provided. It has made me the wife, mom, co-worker, friend, and business person that I am today.

Current: I am the United Way Board president and have been serving on the board for 4 years. In addition, I am on the Unity Foundation EUCSA committee and have served with that group for five years. I am a director on the National Convenience Distribution Association and sit on the Government Affairs committee for our industry. I also am blessed to teach second grade Sunday school at ACC for my 8-year-old son and am the team mom for my daughter’s DOB dance team. What is your favorite thing about living in the Alexandria area?
My husband Scott and I have called Alexandria home for 17 years and have loved it every day! It is a safe and positive community to raise our children and provides a variety of opportunities for them at any age. In addition, the people in Alexandria are wonderful! I have met so many people that have positively influenced my life in one way or another. You do not find that in most places! And of course we love the lakes!

Absolutely 100 percent being given the opportunity to work alongside my dad, Dale Erickson, at Henry’s Foods. Henry’s is a place that has been his passion for almost 50 years! He is the most dedicated and loved man in this industry in my mind, and I get to learn from him every day! Truly a gift!

Through dedication and passion in all that I do. My family, outside of my faith, is certainly my highest priority. They are my “why” in this world! Arianna and Maxwell are why I work so hard to make a difference in the community in which we live and for the team I am privileged to lead at Henry’s. It is important to me that my kids see the genuine passion
As I grew up: My Grandma Irene has influenced my life in more ways than I can list. Her love for others, her kind and passionate heart, her fight for life, her giving spirit, her genuine smile, and her ability to truly make everyone around her happy. She is 94 years young and we still visit almost every day! I hope as I live each day, a piece of what I have learned from her is with me always! In business: Peter Nelson, president at Glenwood State Bank, truly has been a blessing in my career. I feel his leadership during my years at Glenwood State Bank helped guide me to be the leader I am today. He led me with passion, faith, and commitment and believed in me to do great things! This is a loaded question. How can you pick just one person? Major mentors of mine include local businessmen to Steve Jobs, but the most influential of all would be Jesus. His lessons on loving and leading people are the foundation of who I am and what I believe. Without belief in His love and grace I would not be who I am or where I am today.

What career accomplishments are you most proud of so far?
The career accomplishments that I am most proud of are those requiring the defining of the undefined. At Douglas Scientific, we call these efforts “going into the prairie,” because an end-goal has been identified, but you may be starting with a blank slate and an undefined path for project completion. The process is seldom smooth and easy, but the challenges that are encountered and overcome are priceless. Examples of recent projects that I am most proud of include the creation and release of an online customer support portal and ondemand product training center to support customers in 17 countries, creation and implementation of an organizational export compliance program, technical training

It’s about God and people. There is no greater calling on our lives than how we live to honor the Lord and treat others. Hands down my greatest accomplishment is to be a part of a team that gets to touch the world right here from Alexandria! We get to develop and support instrumentation that literally helps scientists understand how to feed people better, how to personalize healthcare to improve people’s quality of life, and know what’s in our food to keep us safer. My team and I get to have that direct connection and build those relationships with people all over the world to make that happen – we get to be on the front lines of making that happen!

Personally – my parents. I was a strongwilled child and through hours of prayer and lots of spankings, my parents never gave up on me, loved me, and spoke truth to me even when the message hurt. What is your favorite thing about living in the Alexandria area?
My favorite thing about the Alexandria area is that even though we’re growing quickly, we haven’t lost our small-town feel. The level of activity in the community is high with a nice variety of things to do and ways to get involved, and you can still walk down the street and expect to have strangers smile, say hello, and lend a hand if you need it. We’re staying true to Minnesota Nice throughout fast growth, and that’s unique.

Who has been the most influential person in your life?
The three most influential people in my life have been my parents and wife – Darrel and Margaret Kalina and Haley Kalina (respectively). They live the values of honesty, perseverance, self-sacrifice, and friendship every day, and serve as living reminders that the pathway to success is paved with both hard work and genuine caring and compassion for the people around us.

My wife and I moved from the Twin Cities area to Alexandria about five years ago. We wanted to raise our family here and have the opportunity to become truly involved in a community. The ability to get involved has been rewarding and has provided us with many friendships and experiences. Most notably, I was previously involved in the Alexandria Rotary Club, serving as treasurer for two years. I also previously completed the Leadership Alexandria program. Currently, I am serving on the board of the Alexandria Area Community Foundation. I also serve on the St. Mary’s Board of Education and the St. Mary’s School Trust Fund Committee.

What career accomplishments are you most proud of so far?
I have been in public accounting for over 16 years now. My undergraduate degree is in accounting and I also have my law degree. I have always practiced in public accounting firms though and truly enjoy the pace, pressure and variety that comes with this profession. I serve nearly exclusively on the tax consulting and tax compliance side of the profession. I consult with clients and local professionals regularly on structuring business transactions in the most tax efficient manner. I am probably most proud of my involvement with the Minnesota Society of CPAs and various offices of my firm throughout Minnesota as a presenter for the annual Tax Advisor Update series. I present to CPA audiences across the state each October and November providing these practitioners with continuing professional education and training to equip them with an understanding of the legislative changes affecting our profession.

How are you using your leadership skills to better the community, workplace and family? I have really enjoyed the connections I am making in Alexandria at work, various organizations and at church. I think it is
important to remember that there is an opportunity everywhere we go to serve others. It might be serving on a committee, helping a colleague of mine understand a complicated tax situation or showing my kids the importance of volunteering. At a recent CliftonLarsonAllen leadership training series I attended, it became even clearer to me that serving others is the best way to lead. I continue to look for ways to serve others and for ways to improve upon how effective I am at this.

What is your favorite thing about living in the Alexandria Area?
The connections, the people, the vibrant business community, the charitable nature of this community, the warmth I feel at St. Mary’s Church, to name a few. Alexandria has so much to offer individuals, families, businesses and visitors. We have many beautiful lakes and countless outdoor activities to enjoy. I continue to be impressed with the new people I meet and the new experiences I have in Alexandria. It doesn’t hurt that my in-laws live in Alexandria and that gives my wife and me built-in babysitters at times!

Who has been the most influential person in your life?
My wife. I have known Katy since I was in preschool, believe it or not. We both grew up in Wadena. We graduated high school together, dated after college and then married. I have been best friends with Katy for a long time. She has been there for me as I have advanced in my career. She is there for me and our kids each tax busy season when I need to work long hours. She challenges me on issues and serves as a great sounding board. I am very proud of my wife and my family. Katy helps round me out and provides the perspective and guidance I need.

What is your involvement?
community
Community, to me, means a sense of belonging to something greater than you. Being actively involved and helping change is important to me. I’ve served on our mentorship group, helping new staff become acclimated to our district and community; the district staff development committee; and the Discovery Middle School leadership team. I participated in SEED classes, learning about diversity locally, nationally and globally. I served on our Community Respect committee, which gathered residents from the area of varying ages and stages of life to discuss the importance of Respect on all levels. I’ve served as Respect Retreat coordinator for years. I was on our Green Team and volunteered with the community Eco Fair. I am one of two Student Council advisors. Our group often collaborates with our local United Way. We work to help support our local food drop and most recently we are partnering for the Day of Caring. I was the advisor for another student leadership group when ninth graders were in our building. I serve on the Minnesota Middle School Association Board of Directors as an educational representative and am the silent auction committee chair. I serve on the Runestone Museum Board of Directors. I coordinated the 2015 Parade of Trees as part of the Christmas in the Fort event. My husband, Eddie and I love to bring our daughter, 2 ½ year old Hazel, and 10-month-old son Alex, to local events.

What career accomplishments are you most proud of so far?
I love what I do just about every day. My position as Dean of Students at Discovery Middle School comes with a lot of variety. I often say that I never know what any given day will bring, which is a part of the fun! In my career so far I would say one of my greatest delights is bringing the Day of Caring to the Alexandria area. This is a nationally recognized activity, not invented by me. I went to the United Way with this idea, and they were exceptionally receptive and helpful. It’s such a great way to give back and show how much our students care about the people in our community. We ran the first successful Day of Caring last

How are you using your leadership skills to better the community, workplace and family?
I’m sure if you asked my husband about my family leadership skills, he’d just say, “She’s the boss.” In the community and workplace, as well as at home, I think communication and a positive attitude are key to a being a great leader. Collaboration from all stakeholders is important. When I feel inspired to make something happen I seek out those around me that can help and support. I am currently working on a few ideas for both my neighborhood and our community that I think will bring happiness to others and help our community grow.

What is your favorite thing about living in the Alexandria area?
The feel of a small town with the modern conveniences of a bigger city. I like knowing people wherever I go. I love that I can raise my children in a family oriented area. I feel we are safe, cared for, and connected completely. The support of community within our schools, and everywhere is so powerful and around town activities are terrific. Also, I adore our town’s amazing Christmas decorations! When Broadway is lit up with decorated trees over the intersections and colorful lights at every turn, it is absolutely picturesque. It’s always made me feel I’m home.

Who has been the most influential person in your life?
My mother. She is a retired junior high English teacher and the mother of four. She and my father divorced when I was in my junior high years, and to see her face adversity with the grace and strength she did was amazing. She persevered through challenges greater than my mind could comprehend. She always remains positive and forward thinking. She is a pillar in our small community and is involved in everything she can be. Her faith is strong and her heart and mind are always open.

What is your involvement?
community
It is important for me to be involved in activities that allow me to see the ways in which people benefit from my efforts, and allow me to serve alongside family members. Previous involvement includes being part of the Lunch Buddy program, being a member of Lakes Area Professional Women and serving on the fashion show committee, assisting with children’s music at my church, and answering phones for the Jingle Bells telethon. While I spent the last year focusing on raising my infant son, I have remained active as a Team Captain for the Relay For Life of Douglas County, a fundraising event for the American Cancer Society. I also take advantage of opportunities at my church to get involved in one-time service projects to help our community in various ways.

What career accomplishments are you most proud of so far?
I am privileged to have many moments of pride throughout my 10 years with the American Cancer Society – from seeing cancer survivors realize at a Relay For Life event there is hope despite their diagnosis, to helping someone who recently lost a loved one recognize how they can turn their pain into productive action, to watching a community achieve goals it set for an event. A few proudest moments include helping volunteers with the Relay For Life of Douglas County turn a struggling event into the #6 per capita event in the country, being asked to serve on national workgroups to help make improvements to the Relay model, and being promoted three times in five years. My work is not easy; it is emotional, time-consuming, and takes me away from my family more than I would like. However, I am incredibly blessed to be living out my calling and look forward to the day I can say that my proudest accomplishment was to be part of the team that helped eliminate cancer as a death sentence once and for all.

How are you using your leadership skills to better the community, workplace and family?
and energy has a greater impact than trying to take on too many things. My son is 18 months old, but I am starting to choose activities for our family to serve our community in ways he will understand as he grows older. Giving toys to less fortunate kids at Christmas, sharing baby essentials with Birthright, and having him fundraise for Relay for Life with our team are ways I started teaching him about serving others. I am passionate about mentoring young women who are having babies so they realize they can work in a demanding role they love and still be incredible wives and mothers. I continuously look for staff and volunteers in my organization that have untapped potential and try to open doors for professional development the way others have done for me.

What is your favorite thing about living in the Alexandria area?
I grew up in Alexandria, and needed to move away to fully appreciate all this community has to offer. I love that the community takes pride in its history while still progressing toward the future. The growth of the community means I am always meeting new people and yet have the opportunity to build stronger relationships with people I have known for years. I moved back about two years ago. Now with a family of my own, I appreciate that this is a community in which families can thrive – with great schools, health care, and an abundance of opportunities to serve others in meaningful ways.

Who has been the most influential person in your life?
I watched my mother, Lynette Kluver, grow and develop in her professional career because someone believed she had skills and talent that would be a good fit for their organization. She taught me that family can still be a top priority at the same time you pursue a meaningful career. She has encouraged me to follow my calling and taught me to use my strengths. My mother is now a grandma and I realize all the ways she was preparing me to be a good mom someday. I am forever grateful for her example for both my parenting and career.

What is your involvement?
community
Much of my involvement and volunteering to date has been focused around my children’s activities. I assist teachers of the KICK Jr. Wednesday night religion class at First Lutheran. In the past, our family was involved in a mentorship program coordinated through Douglas County. We were introduced to a young, single mom and were able to be part of her life and her daughter’s life for a few years. We all enjoyed getting to know her and her daughter and having them over for dinner and events. It ended up that this year the young daughter is now a fifth grader and was able to be a fifth grade buddy to our second grade daughter. How rewarding to see and hear how mentorship can go full circle. Our family LOVES animals. We have a dog, two cats and a gecko. Sometimes I feel like we live in a zoo! We love to be around animals. Because of this our entire family volunteers at the Lakes Area Humane Society. It’s difficult for us to go there and play with and help care for the dogs and cats without bringing one home.

How are you using your leadership skills to better the community, workplace and family?
I try and focus on big picture ideas and plans and try not to get too involved in the details. Details are important but I feel it is also important to continue to ask “why” and look at what the overall objective is in anything that I do. I feel this is applicable in all areas of my life. In the workplace I try to do this to continue to focus on efficiencies and effectiveness and not fall into the trap of “it’s always been done this way” while working hard on making sure the details are the best way to achieve the overall goal. For my family this helps me to prioritize and put the most important things (the people) at the top of my list each day. I hope to get more involved and help improve our community by offering my skills and dedication to continually improve where we work, play and learn.

What is your favorite thing about living in the Alexandria area?
Reading is a passion of mine. I had the opportunity to lead a Jr. Great Books reading club with my son and some of his classmates a few years ago. This combined two of my great loves – books and kids. It was so fun to read books with these children and guide them on a discussion. I am also part of a book club of adult women. We try to get together monthly and discuss books we have read. This has challenged my book choices and results in some great discussion.
I love the “small-town” feel Alexandria provides but with “big city” opportunities. My husband and I both come from very small towns and it’s nice to live and work in a community where people are friendly and welcoming. At the same time I feel Alexandria is a growing and progressive community that provides so much opportunity. We recently took our son to register for ninth grade classes at AAHS and I was astounded by the options he has to learn and grow. I am so excited to continue to raise my children in this community.

What career accomplishments are you most proud of so far?
My involvement in helping three separate county public health departments integrate into a single five-county organization has to rank at the top of my list. It has been extremely challenging and difficult but also greatly rewarding. I love the people that I work with and that group has grown by adding the two other departments in 2015. Although I am not able to provide direct support to individuals that need public health services in our region, I find great satisfaction in supporting my

My dad – Chuck Grossman. He has always lived by the motto of work hard, be nice, and take time to play. No matter what he is doing, he does it 100 percent and with a smile on his face. As a young girl I watched him work hard but then set aside that work to play with my sister and I. He continues to do that with his grandchildren and is always so kind and positive to all he meets and knows.

What is your community involvement?
My position with BlackRidgeBANK gives me the time and flexibility to be involved in multiple organizations in the Alexandria area. Every year I volunteer time to organizations such as United Way and Habitat for Humanity. In addition to volunteering, I am a member of several local organizations including Viking Sportsmen, Ducks Unlimited, and Prairie to Woods Whitetails. I also served as the treasurer of the Alexandria Kiwanis Club for several years.

What career accomplishments are you most proud of so far?
In regards to my banking career, I am most proud of how I have transitioned into my current position as market president for BlackRidgeBANK. Through the course of my career, I was able to capitalize on several advancement opportunities. I truly enjoy coming to work every day, developing relationships with customers, and providing services tailored to each client’s needs.

the United Way allocation committee, or swinging a hammer for Habitat for Humanity, I look forward to opportunities to improve the lives of residents within our community. My skills allow me to promote a friendly and rewarding work atmosphere within my region. My hope is that through serving as a productive member of society, my children will learn from my example and be productive citizens as well.

What is your favorite thing about living in the Alexandria area?
I enjoy all of the outdoor activities that Alexandria has to offer. I am an avid outdoorsman and enjoy spending as much time as possible hunting and fishing in and around Alexandria. In addition, Alexandria offers many of the amenities of a large city, but still has a “small town” atmosphere. We are fortunate to have a multitude of job opportunities and a great school system.

My wife, Michelle. She has supported me whole-heartedly through my career and has always been there to cheer me on along the way. She is a great role model for our children and always puts the needs of everyone else before her own. She is dedicated to her job and is the most reliable person I know.

I donate my time to Vikingland Builders’ Construction Couture, the Titus 2 spring fashion show, and the Ann Manning fashion show in the fall. I’ve also donated my time and services to the Church of the Harvest Annual Spa and Fashion Night, and will be teaching for Community Education on braiding, which I’m very excited about!

I was also a national educator with a previous professional haircare company, traveling anywhere from Los Angeles to Manitoba, learning and teaching cutting and styling techniques to professional salons.

I love how welcoming the community has been to me. Alexandria is always growing and evolving, while still maintaining the small town feel.
I don’t have just one accomplishment that I am most proud of, I have many. My accomplishments are small but mighty. When I have a high school student tell me that they haven’t drank a soda pop all week after learning about how much sugar is in it or when a parent tells me that their new family favorite recipe is a healthy one we’ve made in class, these things remind me that I am making a difference in the lives of others.

My parents took a small, family farm and turned it into a very successful business. They’ve always helped guide me and have been a great support system for me. My brother Jason has also been a role model for me. He is very hard working and has a strong set of values, both of which make him a great leader. He is always there when I need advice or a good dose of brutal honesty! Growing up, I’ve always looked up to him.

How are you using your leadership skills to better the community, workplace and family?
I am using my leadership skills to better the community by teaching others about living a healthy life through a variety of different classes. I hope those participants inform
What is your community involvement?
I volunteer with ABE/Alexandria Literacy Project with adult women who want to learn English but do not have access to regular ESL classes. I am organizing a volunteer program called Open Doors to create bridges of friendship between volunteers and English language learners and their families. I was a mentor from 2010-2014 with my church young adult group in Elbow Lake, where I planned events for young adults and helped newcomers find a place to connect with others. When I moved to Alexandria in 2013, I started a similar group (Alex Area Young Adults, or AAYA). We play games, see movies, go out for dinner. It’s a no-pressure group that loves to have fun and make new friends. I work with homeschool families, teaching composition, literature and speech/ communication to students in grades 3-12.

What career accomplishments are you most proud of so far?
Having the opportunity to help students become lifelong, independent learners! I love to solve real world problems through teaching. I enjoy creating lessons and activities that break down complex skills into manageable pieces. The homeschool community values excellence in education, and I always strive to offer rigorous instruction yet leave room for students to grow at their own pace. Getting to know hundreds of students from third to 12th grade with diverse abilities and interests is an amazing opportunity.

I believe leadership recognizes the potential in people, encourages their dreams and gives them room to grow. That’s what I love doing for others, and that’s what my colleagues, students and family do for me. I strive to give people the gift of believing in them. I think we all can use leadership skills to encourage others to put their best self forward.

What is your favorite thing about living in the Alexandria area? Being around so many trees and lakes! Also, I’ve only lived here for three years, yet many people have opened their lives to me and offered friendship. I feel truly blessed to know the kind, hard working people of Alexandria and to call them my neighbors.

Being asked to serve on Nationwide’s Agent Advisory Council. In this position, I was able to speak directly with senior leadership at Nationwide, hear about the direction of a Fortune 100 company, and be able to share my input based on what I have discussed with other team members and clients.

Who has been the most influential person in your life?
Apart from my savior Jesus, my wonderful family, and my friends, the most influential person was probably a woman named Marian. She was the first person I ever tutored and the first refugee I ever met. After meeting her, I came home and told my mom, “I know exactly what I want to do with my life!” Becoming friends with Marian was a defining point. Our friendship set me on the path to teaching, volunteer work, and being aware of the “invisible” people around me.
Recently obtaining my Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) designation. It involved completing five rigorous courses over a three-year span, with each course consisting of a 20-question essay exam.

I am the most influential person in my life. I am the one who makes my decisions and I’m also the one who has to live with the consequences of those choices. If you ask me who inspires me, my parents and others in our community who work on fighting hunger.

That I can tell people Alexandria is “Easy to get to, hard to leave.” But in all seriousness, it would have to be the people. I often see my generation being magnetized to the metropolitan areas, but I couldn’t be happier than to live in Alexandria, where there are opportunities, smalltown values, and above all, wonderful people.

I am involved in several different organizations throughout Douglas County. I work with the United Way and Building Connections and Community Impact Coalition, which both work on bettering the community. I am a member of Alexandria Area Young Professionals and a Lunch Buddy mentor through the Alexandria Area School District.
I feel it is very important to be involved in your community to help us all grow and improve. I also believe it is a great way to introduce myself into the community and meet more people, as I am new to Alexandria.

I am currently an Elevated Educator with Moroccanoil, which is an elite professional haircare company that has a rigorous auditioning process and multiple trainings per year to stay up to date. I travel to other salons in Minnesota and teach various techniques in styling and braiding.
