APPETIZER Pike & Pint Grill

“Handcrafted food made with passion always!” 320-763-7468 110 30th Ave. W. Alexandria, MN www.pikeandpint.com With appetizers such as lobster nachos, pike corn dogs, fired-up shrimp and ahi tuna bibb wraps, Pike & Pint Grill was this year’s choice for best appetizers by voters in the Best of the Lakes Area contest.

Pike & Pint Grill was started in 2015 by Kent Kopp and his wife, Rita. With 35 years of experience in the restaurant industry, Kopp founded the grill with the goal of giving guests the opportunity to explore handcrafted foods and regional craft beers. In addition to appetizers, the restaurant’s staff of 40 employees provide lunches and dinners, a happy hour, and custom catering. Pike & Pint Grill will also soon be launching some fun, new, crafted cocktails. Locally owned and operated, the staff at Pike & Pint Grill believes in taking pride in its products and the dining experience it provides.

BAKERY Roers Family Bakery 320-763-4741 430 Broadway St., Alexandria, MN “Being sweet to you is our business” The building that houses Roers Family Bakery has been a bakery for 130 years, but the Roers family took over in 1995. At just six employees, the team is made up of four Roers family members and two others. Owner June Roers called the bakery a “full scale bakery,” offering bread, rolls, wedding cakes, cookies and lots more. The bakery was chosen as the best in the lakes area because the business has very good customers, she said. “We do the best we can to make the best products we can. We make everything from scratch.” The bakery is always working on seasonal products and new products to see what customers like. The less popular items are taken out of the collection. This time of year, pumpkinflavored food is common. “The customers are the funnest part of any business,” June Roers said. “You do the best to please your customers and hope they come back and become your friends.” The business remembers its customers, including ones who only visit during the summer. Customers turn into extended family, she said. 8 Best of the Lakes Area 2019

BAR, CATERER, DINNER, HAPPY HOUR, LUNCH, PIZZA, RESTAURANT, WINGS Angelina’s Restaurant & Bar 1215 Hwy. 29 N., Alexandria, MN 320-762-1324 Angelina’s Restaurant and Bar opened its doors in 1971. For the last 27 years, it has been owned and operated by Robbie Carlsen. Carlsen’s history with the restaurant, however, dates back to the 1980s. At age 15, his first job was as a dishwasher at Angelina’s. Over the years, the restaurant has seen many changes. This past summer saw the addition of the outdoor, two-story patio. “It turned out beautifully,” said Carlsen, who noted that he and his crew of about 50 employees strive to be both a family-friendly restaurant and also a fun bar for

its customers. “Being chosen as ‘the best’ in several categories tells us we are doing right by our customers.” Angelina’s is open seven days a week at 11 a.m. with daily specials and happy hour bar specials. “We have a wide variety of menu items, including our homemade garlic toast, pizzas, wings, steak, pastas, salads, wraps and much more,” said Carlsen. “And our catering service is used by many for weddings and special events.” Carlsen also noted that Angelina’s offers a private room to book for parties or private events.

BEER SELECTION, BLOODY MARY, BURGER DJ’s Tap House & Grill 3007 Hwy 29 Suite 103, Alexandria, MN 320-335-2206 “Something different.” DJ’s Tap House, opened since August 2015, offers a wide variety of menu items but it is well-known for some special, unique items. Owner Doug Jaskens said one of those items is the huge DJ’s Tap House House Bloody, which is a 22-ounce drink topped with a slider, bacon, a rib, chicken wing, potsticker, cheese curds, jumbo shrimp, beef stick, pickle, olives, pepperoncini, cube of cheese and an orange, lemon and lime slice. And he said that DJ’s uses a house recipe for the Bloody Marys as well as for the salt they rim glasses with. Another menu item unique to DJ’s that is a favorite of customers is the restaurant’s flagship burger – the Rippin’ Raz, which features jalapenos, cheese curds, applewood smoked bacon,

cream cheese and its own raspberry sauce. A few other fan favorites include the Gouda Mac Burger and the Peanut Butter Jealous Burger. “We like to keep our food fun and different with quality products,” said Jaskens. “We source our beef locally, never frozen and it’s sealed in small, two-pound packages to guarantee the freshest beef.” Jaskens said DJ’s, which boasts about 40 employees, is also known for its beer selection. It has 32 tap lines that include two nitro lines, two cider lines and two sour lines. “For the first four years we were open, we were able to tap a new beer every other day,” said Jaskens. Craft beer, along with creative cocktails, a large wine selection, creative food options, great atmosphere for anyone, outdoor seating with fire tables and a new yard game area off the patio is why Jaskens believes DJ’s Tap House was chosen as a Best of the Lakes Area winner.

BREAKFAST Traveler’s Inn Restaurant 511 Broadway, Alexandria, MN 320-763-4000 Why do people like going to Traveler’s Inn Restaurant?

BREWERY

Copper Trail Brewery 205 Broadway St., Alexandria, MN 320-219-6688 The name Copper Trail was made to reflect the memory of friends around a bonfire sharing craft beers. This was the spot where everyone came to share their story of the path they were on. Copper Trail is meant to be a reminder to “Enjoy the Journey!” It was a big year for Copper Trail Brewing Co. and its 12 employees as the brewery moved from its original location in the Willow Creek Complex, which opened in 2016, to

It could be the mouth watering, made-from-scratch food at a great value. Or it could be that customers can get in and out really fast. Or it could be the impeccable service. Or maybe the fact that the restaurant is always adding trendy, new items to the menu while keeping customer favorites. Whatever the reason, the restaurant has a long reputation as a local favorite. “It’s been a lot of fun!” said owner Patrick Sieve. “We’ve been saying that we are ‘Alexandria’s most recommended

restaurant’ for years and years and feel that statement still holds true to this day. It’s really like ‘Cheers’ without the alcohol. One of the best parts about living in a community like ours is the familiar faces we all see on a daily basis and Travs is a perfect spot for that.” The restaurant, established in 1928, has 25 employees, and it keeps making improvements. In the last year, it moved into its “phase three” remodeling work and both of the bathrooms were upgraded with a classic subway tile/hexagonal penny tile look.

a bigger and better location in downtown Alexandria. Now located a block from Big Ole and the Central Lakes Trail, Copper Trail Brewery’s new space is a 150-seat taproom with an additional outdoor patio. Its production has grown to a 15-barrel brew house. And with the new system, owners Adam Graf and David Gibbons said Copper Trail will be able to keep the beers that are fan favorites on tap while having the ability to do more experimental beers. The brewery also rolled out its new six-packs of 12-ounce cans at liquor stores this past Thanksgiving. Copper Trail offers a variety

of craft beer that is brewed right on site. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and the taproom is a comfortable place to enjoy time with friends and family. Both owners are hometown guys from the Alexandria Lakes Area and graduated from Jefferson High School in 2005. They both went to college at North Dakota State University to get their graduate degrees, but are both proud to be keeping Alexandria their home. Graf and Gibbons said they wanted to thank everyone who voted for Copper Trail and they are appreciative for all the support they’ve

received from their hometown community. “We hope we were chosen the best brewery in the lakes area because of our great quality of beer of course, but also because of our taproom atmosphere,” said Graf. “We wanted to create a place where people could come, relax and enjoy a freshly brewed beer with others.”

Offering dine-in, takeout and catering/large group orders, the 35 or so employees at Pizza Ranch strive to give service from the heart to all of its customers. That’s a tall order when the restaurant – in business since 2005 – serves more than 1,000 pieces of chicken and more than 200 pizzas on a daily basis. Its customers know exactly what to expect, and Pizza

Ranch has been delivering, so to speak. And in 2020,

it promises some exciting changes.

“They look so great and were beyond pleased with the results,” said Sieve. “We brought in some very chic sinks and put up some breathtaking wallpaper, thanks to Nancy Sieve. Slowly but surely we have freshened the joint to an above satisfactory grade.”

According to operating partner Andy MacDonald, Lure Lakebar was chosen as the best in the area because of its outstanding customer service combined with a great view of Lake Le Homme Dieu and wonderful live music. The full-service restaurant also has space for group events. A fun fact about the business is that its bar top is made of concrete and weighs more than 3,000 pounds.

PLACE FOR SUMMER FAMILY FUN Casey’s Amusement Park 1305 N. Nokomis NE Alexandria, MN 320-763-7576 Todd and Kathy Elmer bought Casey’s Amusement Park in 1998 from its previous owners and kept the name. Todd said the park started sometime in the 1980s. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, Casey’s offers go-karts, miniature golf and bumper boats. “We offer great family fun for all ages,” said Todd, pointing out that kids as young as 2

can ride on a go-kart with an adult and can drive a go-kart by age 4, and they have had miniature golfers as old as 96. “It’s very satisfying to see families have a great time.” In a typical summer, they hire about 45 part-time employees. In 2020, Casey’s will add a special go-kart track to the three it already has, Todd said. This one is a drift track that provides a very slippery surface for greater thrills. It also has 36 holes of miniature golf and a few arcade-style games inside. Casey’s can handle large groups, he said. One year, Douglas Machine brought 650

employees to the amusement park. A FUN FACT: Casey’s oils its tracks with vegetable oil

bought in bulk from Sam’s Club. The oil saves on tires and equipment, Todd said.

PLACE FOR WINTER FAMILY FUN Andes Tower Hills 4505 Andes Road SW, Kensington, MN 320-965-2455 Andes Tower Hill, a ski hill that has served more than a million skiers since the Anderson brothers opened it in 1981, has long been the place to be every winter, and readers have chosen it as the best place for winter family fun in the Best of the Lakes Area contest. It is much more than the only place in the region for downhill skiers to pursue their passion. It offers multiple ways to slide down the hill, from snowboarding, snow tubing and cross country skiing to snow shoeing, and rentals to boot. In addition there is a cafeteria and a pro shop.

18 Best of the Lakes Area 2019

People come from far and wide to Andes Tower Hill, with one out of three customers traveling from either North Dakota or South Dakota. When they arrive, they are greeted by friendly staff – as many as 85 people work there – and go about making lifelong memories. Its mission is to have people feel better about themselves after they leave Andes Tower Hills than before they came. Helping in that regard this year will be several improvements, including the paving of Andes Road, and the addition of a magic carpet conveyor lift in the tubing area, three new snow guns and a new run, called “Vegas Boulevard,” named after the late Jerry Anderson.

RIBS Corral Saloon & Eatery 117 North Nelson St., Nelson, MN 320-762-2416 Known as the “Meeting Place,” the Corral Saloon and Eatery in Nelson is conveniently located five miles from Alexandria, Carlos, Forada and Osakis. Now boasting 27 employees, the Corral was opened in 1956, according to Sue Hawkinson, owner of the Corral. When asked why she thought the ribs were voted the best in the lakes area, Hawkinson said, “They have been cooked to perfection for years and the recipe follows from owner to owner.” She added, “Arlene continues to make the same sauce.” The Corral is a full-service restaurant and bar with a 300-seating capacity banquet facility. It also offers full off-site catering, Hawkinson said. “We are constantly making changes to our facility and menu to make it the best it can be,” she said.

Jake’s Bikes opened in 2009, but owner Jake Capistrant’s dream of opening his own shop started 27 years ago when he began working at The Bike Shop in downtown Alexandria. This past year, another dream became reality when Jake’s Bikes moved to a bigger and better location that Capistrant said will help enhance customers shopping experience. The hiring of what he called his “awesome team” will help guide customers through their bike-buying process. The mission at Jake’s, said Capistrant, is to “provide you with the means, opportunities and inspiration to ride bicycles.” Jake’s Bikes, with its eight employees, offers bike and accessory sales, service and rentals, area experts in bike trip plan-

Creative Touch Boutique

Woody’s Car Wash

516 Broadway St., Alexandria, MN 320-762-8786 Creative Touch Boutique was started 18 years ago by Pam and Dan Botker, and they were joined three years ago by daughter Amy Lesnar. Together they have transformed the store into a shopping destination for home décor, clothing and gifts. The store’s goal is to create a great shopping experience for its customers, and to find cute, comfortable and affordable clothing for all. It carries women’s clothing and accessories, including jewelry and shoes, as well as exclusive Minnesota clothing for men, women and children. The boutique’s sales have increased tremendously over the last three years, enabling

Creative Touch to grow its staff from just three employees to 10. Amy will be leading the business into the future with an emphasis on social media marketing and website sales. “Our lives seem to be busier than ever and people don’t always have time to shop in person, so we have developed a pickup option on our website for our local customers to purchase their items online, and then pick them up at the store when they have time,” she said. Creative Touch is open seven days a week and has extended hours Monday through Friday for people to shop after work.

“Get Your Shine On” 1223 Broadway St., Alexandria, MN 320-763-5473 The 22 employees at Woody’s Car Wash at 1223 Broadway in Alexandria take pride in their work. In fact, their motto is “Get Your Shine On.” Woody’s was chosen once again this year as the area’s best car wash, and for owner Chris Wittkamp, the reason is simple. It is because of the quality of its wash. “We take pride in making sure all vehicles get their shine on,” he said. “It’s the personal touch and hand drying that matters.” Not only does Woody’s offer a quality full-service

car wash that includes hand-drying all vehicles, it also has six self-serve car wash bays, and four vacuums to clean the inside of your ride. It even cleans boat lift canopies. And, Woody’s provides something that is in very short supply in 2019 – full service on gas. It all makes for what Wittkamp calls a family atmosphere at Woody’s. “We have fun working, and it’s very rewarding seeing a clean vehicle after our hard work,” he said.

EYE CLINIC Eye Associates of Alexandria 320-763-4321 1610 Broadway St., Alexandria, MN “We are the Eye Guyz!”

32 Best of the Lakes Area 2019

Why did customers select Eye Associates as the Best Eye Doctor in the lakes area? “Our professional staff sincerely cares about people and their eye health by creating a warm environment, utilizing the latest technology and techniques, to maximize the patient experience,” said owners Dr. John Hoven and Dr. Jeremy Anderson. Hoven and Anderson are the third owners of a business that’s been around since the 1940s. They took over in 2001. The clinic has five doctors and 18 staff members offering comprehensive eye care for all ages, infants to the elderly;

urgent care for eyes; management of medical and surgical cases; and fitting of contacts; along with the area’s largest optical boutique. In the past year, Eye Associates has added a state of the art piece of equipment that allows the associates to deliver same day eyewear to single vision eyeglass wearers in the lakes area. A couple of fun facts about the business is that the ladies outnumber the guys, 21 to 2. The business also has the region’s only OpticWash station, which is a “car wash” of sorts for eyewear and jewelry.

Owned by brothers Paul and Tom Hedine, Hedine Jewelers specializes in jewelry repair and cleaning, custom designs, diamonds, engagement rings, precious stones, watch repair and more. As third-generation jewelers, they see a lot of loyal customers whose parents and even grandparents shopped at the store. GIFT SHOP

Scandinavian Gift Shop

“Celebrating Scandinavian Culture Since 1983” 604 Broadway, Alexandria, MN 320-763-6363 If there is a city befitting a business that concentrates on all things Scandinavian, Alexandria would be near the front of the line. Doris and Wally Miller must have thought so, too. They launched the Scandinavian Gift Shop in 1983. Today, owners Heidi Bergerson and Sandy Sheets are continuing those traditions. The sisters bought the store in March 2011, and operate it with the help of two part-time employees. In the store, customers will find all sorts of unique items and a variety of products from all five Scandinavian countries.

“We take pride in, and really enjoy helping our customers find that special item,” Bergerson said. “Our customers are simply the best, and we feel so lucky to have such a wonderful customer base.” They also have a new website, www.scandinaviangifts. com, designed to reach their Nordic-inspired customers who live outside of the Douglas County area, and new products such as Topaz boots and Sofa Wool, both from Norway. The Scandinavian Gift Shop is also where customers are liable to hear “mange takk,” which we understand means something along the lines of “thank you very much.”

HARDWARE STORE Ace Hardware

“Ace is the Place with the Helpful Hardware Folks!” 320-763-5200 406 Broadway St., Alexandria, MN Once again, Best of the Lakes Area voters have given thumbs up to Ace Hardware, a place to buy tools, get keys made, to color match paint and to get glass cut. “It’s our employees, the advice they offer and the help they give and their friendliness,” said owner Rocqui Gustafson. “We have what I feel is a very good staff. They care and they try to be helpful and attentive.” Ace started in Alexandria in 1963 and employs 17, plus 10 in its Long Prairie locations. They try to keep a bright, clean store that is well organized and stocked, Gustafson said. And they’re always open to

change, such as new products and new technology. One new thing: They now make not just metal house keys, but programmable keys and fobs with the buttons that car owners would get from the dealer.

“We’re not just cloning keys anymore,” Gustafson said. Also, it is going to stock Benjamin Moore paint again starting this spring.

FUN FACT: Sometimes, when the weather is nice, the employees fire up a Traeger grill. They have made zucchini apple pie, she said.

HOTEL/MOTEL Holiday Inn Alexandria “True hospitality” 5637 Hwy. 29 S. Alexandria, MN www.holidayinn.com

The Holiday Inn, located just off 1-94, offers the perfect location for travelers. In addition to 148 cozy, comfortable rooms, Holiday Inn also offers a full recreation area that includes a swimming pool, kid’s pool, whirlpool, sauna, game room, fitness room, and areas for volleyball, basketball and floor hockey. When

guests get hungry, there is no need to leave the building as Willy T’s Tavern and Grill is right there serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. The hotel also has six rooms available to accommodate holiday parties and meetings. According to Andy Erickson, marketing and sales director, Holiday Inn was chosen by readers as the best hotel in the area because it makes guests feel right at home with its comfortable and newly remodeled rooms, friendly and knowledgeable staff, and locally sourced restaurant and bar. “The Holiday Inn staff treats their guests with a caring attitude, and makes them feel like they’re at a home away from home,” he said. “We understand the importance of customer loyalty, and the best way to have a loyal customer is to give them a great experience during their stay. The staff at the Holiday Inn feel more like friends than employees.” When the Holiday Inn was built in Alexandria in 1969, it was one of the first to incorporate the Holidome concept, which featured a pool and recreation area. After switching to being a Park Inn for a while, the hotel became a Holiday Inn again in 1994.

MEDICAL FACILITY Alexandria Clinic 610 30th Avenue West, Alexandria, MN 320-763-5123 or 1-800-646-4220 “Our passion and purpose is to strengthen and nurture the health and well-being of our family, friends, neighbors, and communities, through every season of life.” Alexandria Clinic, a division of Alomere Health, sees over 270,000 appointments per year.
