•BAKERY

Roers Family Bakery 320-763-4741 430 Broadway St., Alexandria

Roers Family Bakery is truly a family-run business, and has been since the Roers took over ownership in 1995. But they’ve been there, providing delicious baked goods to the people of Alexandria, since 1978.

Their striving to provide quality, old-fashioned products at an affordable price earned them the title of Best Bakery in the area. “Being sweet to you is our business” is their motto and they truly enjoy it.

“The customers are the funnest part of the business,” owner June Roers said. “You do the best you can for them and cooperate with what the customers are looking for.” The Roers are always

trying out new recipes and testing them with the public to see what sticks. Roers Family Bakery serves customers looking for event catering or a midmorning treat.

made,” Graf said. “The ingredients we use are top quality. And most importantly, the atmosphere of the brewery is inviting so everyone can relax while enjoying a delicious brew. We have extended hours beyond what was originally planned. It has been incredible.” Copper Trail offers beer, sodas, pizzas, snacks, off-

sale growlers and off-sale Crowlers. The brewery is on tap at close to 14 area locations and will soon be found in liquor stores. They also have special events with music, beer and also offer yoga. They post their events at www.facebook.com/coppertrailbrewing/.

•CRAFT BEER Copper Trail Brewing Company 320-763-7420 410 30th Avenue East, Suite 103, Alexandria www.coppertrailbrewing.com Copper Trail Brewing Company, owned by Adam Graf and Dave Gibbons, opened its doors Dec. 26, 2016. However, Graf and Gibbons began their business venture in 2014. Their motto, “Enjoy the journey,” has resonated since the inception of the brewing company, which is Alexandria’s fifth brewing company in its history and the first brewing company in more than 70 years. “Everyone is on their own journey in life, yet we’re all in it together,” Graf said. “And

while you’re at it, do your best to have fun on that journey and enjoy it.” The nine employees focus on the process to ensure the best product possible, he said. About 500 pounds of grains go into making each batch of beer. Graf said they have expanded the distribution, added additional serving tanks, added another fermenter and added a Crowler canning machine. “Nothing beats freshness and it can’t be much fresher than when you enjoy a brew 20 feet from where it was

•BREAKFAST Travelers Inn 320-763-4000 511 Broadway St., Alexandria www.travelersinncafe.com Travelers Inn has been serving Alexandria breakfast since the Prohibition era in 1928. People might walk into the Travs, as it’s affectionately known, and think it’s crazy busy. But for the 25 employees who work there, it’s busy as usual, general manager Patrick Sieve said. Brothers Jon and Kurt Sieve have owned the restaurant together since the early 1970s but it all started in their mother’s kitchen with her homemade pies. “Some recipes date back to the 1950s. They feel like a big warm hug when you’re eating,” Patrick Sieve said.

The Sieves have kept the business in the family and they’ve kept their focus on excellent service for their guests. “Whether it's a friendly handshake and a joke from the boss or a hug and a wave goodbye from any number of our legendary servers,” Patrick Sieve said.

“We firmly believe that we have the best kitchen and front of the house staff in the city.” The younger generation of Sieves are updating the restaurant in five stages. This past winter they completely gutted and redesigned the back section of Travelers Inn.

They are currently on phase two. “We believe we have the best breakfast because of our combination of quality of ingredients, quality of service and sheer speed in which we operate,” Patrick Sieve said.

Established in 1995, the Alexandria Papa Murphy’s Take ‘N’ Bake Pizza is determined to provide customers with great service. That great service combined with fresh ingredients and dough made from scratch, earned them the title of best pizza in town.

Papa Murphy’s offers carry out pizzas, cheesy breads, dessert pizzas and salads. To ensure the highest quality, one of their 23 employees hand shreds

their cheese every single day. Customers take the pizzas home and bake them in their own ovens at 425 degrees Fahrenheit – hence their motto.

Now boasting 27 employees, the Corral was opened in 1956, according to Sue Hawkinson, owner of the Corral.

When asked why she thought the ribs were voted the best in the lakes area, Hawkinson said, “They have been cooked to perfection for years and the recipe follows from owner to owner.” She added, “Arlene (the chef) continues to make the same sauce.”

The Corral is a fullservice restaurant and bar with a 300-seating capacity banquet facility. It also offers full off-site catering, Hawkinson said. “We are constantly making changes to our facility and menu to make it

the best it can be,” she said. Hawkinson also shared a fun fact about the restaurant – it’s made 7,000 pounds of potato salad this year and they are still counting.

“We are open seven days a week and strive to have both a family restaurant and a fun bar atmosphere,”

Carlsen said. “It’s a great place to meet up with your friends. Our staff will make your day.”

If you’re looking for the best Happy Hour in town, why not start with the original? “This has been the same Happy Hour since we started in 1996. We’re the original Happy Hour in town,” owner Andy Rassat said. Andy and Cammie Rassat have been serving Alexandria through their business, Raapers Eatery and Ale, for over two decades and the people have spoken. Raapers was voted Best Happy Hour and Best Catering in the area. “Our catering has really taken off,” Rassat said. “Catering is really fun for everyone. We love to do it.” But they certainly aren’t neglecting their in-house

Raapers experience. This past year they’ve done interior renovations to their dining room and they’re currently updating their back bar. They change up their menu at least twice a year, just to keep things fresh for their customers. With 26 beers on tap that are always changing, you’ll have plenty to choose from during the original Happy Hour.

The company’s story from their Facebook page: At Caribou Coffee, we believe this to be true: that if passion, hard work and excellence go into an endeavor, the outcome will be a quality experience, and therefore rewarding. In 1990, during an adventure through the Alaskan wilderness, our founders journeyed to the top of Sable Mountain. After a strenuous climb, they reached the summit and were rewarded with a sensational view: the boundless mounBest of the Lakes Area 2017

tains, a clear blue sky, and a herd of caribou thundering through the valley. That was truly the “aha” moment. The breathtaking panoramic view became the entrepreneurial vision for Caribou Coffee – a company that believes excellence is a product of hard work, and that life is too short for anything else. This vision serves as a guide as we strive to create a special experience for you here at Caribou Coffee. Now, we invite you as our guest along this path. •HEARING SERVICES Wales Hearing Aid Center “You’ll be hearing more from Wales.” 320-762-2505 1501 Broadway St., Alexandria Since hearing aid technology now accepts streaming from smartphone and iPads, they’ve lost their stigma and become techie tools, says Gregory Wales, owner of

Wales Hearing Aid Center. Hearing aids now transmit and receive wirelessly using Bluetooth technology, Wales said. Apple and Starkey have teamed up to

make devices interactive with Starkey hearing aids. That means sound from any Apple product can now feed wirelessly to both ears. If users misplace their hearing aids, their iPhone will find it for them, and their device can automatically switch to preferred settings at specific places like church, a restaurant, or a hockey game. Wales offers everything that concerns hearing aids and hearing testing in order to select and fit hearing aids. The business sells, programs and repairs hear-

ing aids and supplies batteries and accessories. The business began in 1974 and employs three (two are contracted). “We try to be the best we can be and have been working at it the longest,” said Wales, explaining why he thinks he was chosen best hearing services business. During the past year, the business has focused on informing the public more about hearing issues and how they relate to general well-being, Wales said.

•FITNESS CLUB •CHILD CARE Alexandria Area YMCA (320) 834-9622 110 Karl Drive, Alexandria www.alexandriaymca.com Voters chose the YMCA as the best place for their kids and their fitness. Why? “Because its facilities and staff are second to none,” said operations director Jackie Peters.

Children in its child care center enjoy spacious classrooms, an indoor gym and an outdoor playground, and access to the aquatic and fitness centers, she said. “YMCA child care teachers, lead teachers and aides are some of the best around – the planning and purpose they put into each lesson plan sets our program apart from the rest,” she said. Meanwhile, those who come to work out can use top-of-the-line cardio equipment, a walking/running track, group fitness programs in two studios, swimming pool and a nursery service for their children, Peters said. In 2004, a group of Alexandrians first talked about

bringing a YMCA to the area. In 2010, The YMCA opened its 56,000 square foot Maynard “Bud,” Sylvia, Diana, Neil and Bruce Peterson Program Center. The Y employs between 120 and 140. Its mission is, “To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body.”

This year, Dennis Lipp took over as interim CEO, and the YMCA plans to expand its child care services through a partnership with Knute Nelson. A fun fact? Basketball and volleyball were invented by YMCA employees in the mid- to late-1800s, Peters said.

•LOCAL ARTIST Leanne Larson of Art Bar 39

320-759-2039 3015 Highway 29 South Alexandria, Minnesota, 56308 www.artbar39.com Since it opened its doors in August 2014, Art Bar 39 in Alexandria has successfully held more than 1,000 art events. And, the company has branched into another location – Chicago, Illinois. According to Leanne Larson, owner and artist, Art Bar 39 offers a “creative space to connect, socialize and be inspired.” Larson said her goal is to expose many forms of art into the community by offering fun and affordable

hands-on events. This past year, Art Bar 39 welcomed its first full-time employee, Rachel Smith, who was hired as the general manager. There are 12 total employees, said Larson. Art Bar 39 hosts weekly Paint and Sip events at its studios, along with many other private events and birthday parties for children. It also offers an “open studio,” which Larson said is where anyone – adults and children – can come to the studio and make a

painting of their choice. No appointment is needed for the open studio, she said. “We also travel all over the area teaching painting classes and hosting parties,” said Larson. “We bring all the supplies, canvas, paints and brushes and the host provides the food and beverages.” In addition to owning and operating Art Bar 39, Larson keeps busy with her live wedding and event painting service. She specializes in painting live

during weddings, as the ceremony is taking place. She also paints custom and commissioned portraits and landscapes. For more information on those services, visit her website at www.canetoadstudios. com. Larson concluded by stating, “There are many fantastic artists in this area and I love being a part of this community. It is an honor to be recognized and chosen again this year.”

Andria Theatre Executive Director Ann Hermes. “In presentations we offer a variety of entertainment of improv, musical performers, reviews and historical shows.” It’s a big undertaking for a staff of 2.5 employees so that’s why local support of the arts is so important. With their support, the association was able to make significant improvements in the past year: The old spire that blew down in 1974 has been replaced with a beautiful new spire. The auditorium underwent a major remodeling from roof to ceiling to floor, which culminated in the re-

placement of old seats with newer ones from the CEC Entertainment remodeling at the Midway Mall Cinema. New carpeting was installed throughout the lobby and box office. A new sound system was added. The box office was remodeled and new staff was hired. Hermes added a “fun fact” about the Andria Theatre: “We have two unconfirmed mischievous ghosts,” she said.

•LOCAL COMMUNITY EVENT Art in the Park 320-762-8300 Held in July at 118 City Park Road, Alexandria Art in the Park has been a staple summer event in the Alexandria Lakes Area for more than 40 years. It is a volunteer-run fundraising event for the Alexandria Area Arts Association. And it is the only event people can walk, bike, drive or boat to as it takes place

at Alexandria City Park on the shores of Lake Agnes, said Joy Wrolson, box officer manager for the arts association. Art in the Park, which is typically held in July, features dozens of vendors with hand-made arts and crafts, as well as numerous live music acts throughout the entire two-day event. In addition, there are always plenty of food vendors onsite. “It’s the only event that brings art, music, dance

and visual arts together with free admission,” said Wrolson. She added that this past summer, the Art in

the Park committee made the decision to start jurying the artists.

Prosteam also provides commercial cleaning services. Owned by Scott and Sandy Grothe, the company has been in business for more than 35 years. “Our company has taken carpet cleaning to a very high level,” Scott said. He explained that they use a unique, patented system that is totally different from the traditional approach to what people think of for carpet cleaning. Cleaning starts with a special alkaline water

pre-spray, followed by an aggressive cleaning and vacuuming combo with a special machine made in Australia. This machine leaves all debris and dirt on top of of the carpet, while scrubbing each side of the carpet fibers. Following that, cleaners use a giant, truck-mounted steam extraction system that has three times the power, heat, and vacuum of a typical carpet truck, leaving only five percent moisture in the carpet for fast drying, Scott explained. “And because our truck is the only truck that can carry enough reverse osmosis soft water, your carpet is left with virtually no residue,” Scott said. That’s why Grothe Prosteam’s motto is “Insist on the big trucks.” “We want all of our clients to know that each job gets done with care and total professionalism,” Scott added. “No job is too big or small.”

Employees, he said, are one reason Bell was voted Best Bank. “Our team members treat our customers, and one another, as we would wish to be treated ourselves,” he said. “People see us as a part of the fabric of this community. They see that we appreciate them, and they become loyal customers who recommend us to others.”

Kids Andsodowe. Congratulations, Dr. Carlsen! Our very own Dr. Brian Carlsen from Alexandria Clinic was voted second favorite physician in the 2017 Best of the Lakes Area competition.

If you’ve ever brought your children to see Dr. Carlsen, you know why. He truly cares about kids, and he helps even the most nervous little patients feel right at ease.

We are honored and very proud to have professionals like Dr. Carlsen, who go above and beyond to care for our neighbors, working at Alexandria Clinic!

•LARGE COMPANY TO WORK FOR Douglas Machine

“Employee owned. Customer driven.” 320-763-6587 3404 Iowa St., Alexandria www.douglas-machine.com Employees enjoy working for Douglas Machine so much that they voted it the best large employer for two years in a row. The global packaging company offers its workers a health clinic, a stock ownership plan, training and development and an “open-book approach” to running the company. “Our employees are what makes our company strong,” company president and CEO Jon Ballou said. “Douglas employees know they are valued and that they are vital in the success of the company.”

Douglas Machine began in 1964 when Bud Thoen wanted to invent and build exceptional packaging machines. A $5 sale was the first recorded transaction for that fledgling company. Two years later, Vern Anderson joined him, and the company sold its first machine. Now more than 600 employees are guided by its mission, “To enrich lives by providing differentiated packaging automation and services.” It five key values are: Unwavering Integrity, Servant’s Heart, Ownership

Spirit, Continuous Innovation and Improvement. Douglas creates automated secondary packaging solutions for corrugated, shrink film and paperboard materials. It specializes in the design and man-

ufacture of case and tray packers, shrink wrap systems, cartoners, sleevers and palletizers. In the past year, it has launched three new products to provide more solutions to its customers and the industry.
