Congratulations to the winners of the Echo Press 2020 Best of the Best contest. This past July, we asked our readers to nominate the best local businesses, and we were overwhelmed with the response with over 6,900 nominations. Then in September we asked our readers to vote on the best businesses and tallied over 94,000 votes in 96 categories. The large response from the voters displays a passion to honor top businesses in our lakes area, which prides itself on individual and business achievement. Area businesses work hard to earn the support of not only the local residents, but also the thousands of annual visitors to our lakes area. This contest shows that area businesses continue to produce high quality products while delivering great customer service. Thank you to our readers for sharing their nominations and voting for their favorites, helping us recognize the area’s best. Diann Drew Echo Press Publisher

APPETIZER, BAR, PIZZA, HAPPY HOUR, OUTDOOR DINING, RESTAURANT, WINGS Angelina’s

1215 Hwy. 29 N., Alexandria 320-762-1324 Angelina’s Restaurant and Bar opened its doors in 1971. For the past 28 years, it has been owned and operated by Robbie Carlsen. Carlsen’s history with the restaurant, however, dates back to the 1980s. At age 15, his first job was as a dishwasher at Angelina’s.

The pandemic has been onerous for restaurants, but Angelina’s at least has a moment to shine. It won a whopping seven awards in the Best of the Lakes Area contest, including Best Appetizer, Best Bar and Best Pizza. Carlsen noted that he and his crew of about 50 employees strive to be both a family-friendly restaurant and also a fun bar for its customers. “Being chosen as ‘the best’ in several categories tells us we are doing right by our customers.”

DESSERT

Angelina’s is open seven days a week at 11 a.m. with daily specials and happy hour bar specials. “We have a wide variety of menu items, including our homemade garlic toast, pizzas, wings, steak, pastas, salads, wraps and much more,” said Carlsen. “And our catering service is used by many for weddings and special events.” Carlsen also noted that Angelina’s offers a private room to book for parties or private events.

Dairy Queen South “Happy Tastes Good.” 1701 South Broadway St., Alexandria 320-763-4556 www.dairyqueen.com For the second consecutive year, Dairy Queen South was voted to have the best dessert in the lakes area. Dairy Queen South has an expansive dining menu with burgers, chicken, appetizers and more. In addition to the franchise’s world-famous Blizzard treats, Dairy Queen offers ice cream cakes, cones and sundaes. It’s also one of several Alexandria eateries that offers its services through Food Dudes, a delivery operation.

RIBS, BBQ

Corral Saloon and Eatery

117 N. Nelson Street, Nelson 320-762-2416 “Great place to meet, eat and drink” The Corral Eatery and Saloon has been in existence since the 1960s, according to owner Sue Hawkinson. Hawkinson and her husband, Mark Scheller, are the seventh owners of the restaurant, she believes. They purchased it on Oct. 1, 2013 and have 27 employees. The BBQ sauce recipe used by the restaurant has been passed down

from owner to owner and that one of the owners, Arlene Schumacher, is actually still making the sauce, Hawkinson said. “The sauce is a tradition at the Corral Saloon and Eatery,” she said. The Corral is more than just a full-service restaurant and bar as it also offers catering and is a great place to host events. The significant changes made over the course of the last year, said Hawkinson, are due to guidelines put in place because of COVID-19. Those changes include masked employees, social distancing, 50% capacity and more. In a normal year, she said, the restaurant goes through about

4,500 eggs and about 4,000 pounds of potatoes to make potato salad, which is used in the salad bar, as well as for celebrations, events and at-home entertaining. Due to restrictions this year, however, many large events had to be cancelled.

“We have always taken pride in maintaining a clean and sanitized environment,” said Hawkinson. “We have put forth every effort to accommodate everyone in whatever possible way we can to minimize the risk and make people feel safe and comfortable at the Corral Saloon and Eatery.”

BURGER

Boulder Tap House 4961 Sanibel Drive, Alexandria 320-759-5622 When Boulder Tap House was first opened, the owners planned on only opening one restaurant. But now there are 10, including the one in Alexandria, and there is hope to open to a few more. The Alexandria Boulder Tap House, with its 46 employees, opened in 2016.

According to Jessica Clark, its general manager, the restaurant offers crafted burgers and sandwiches, along with tacos and crafted beer. “We have fresh, never frozen burgers that are made to order,” she said. Clark said the mission statement for Boulder Tap House is “to operate restaurants that consist of a fun, energetic team that is constantly thriving on exceeding our guests’ expectations.”

The company’s story from their Facebook page: At Caribou Coffee, we believe this to be true: that if passion, hard work and excellence go into an endeavor, the outcome will be a quality experience, and therefore rewarding. In 1990, during an adventure through the Alaskan wilderness, our founders journeyed to the top of Sable Mountain. After a strenuous climb, they reached the summit and were rewarded with a sensational view: the boundless mountains, a clear blue sky, and a herd of caribou thundering through the valley. That was truly the “aha” moment.

BREWERY

Copper Trail Brewing Company 205 Broadway Street, Alexandria 320-219-6688 “Enjoy the Journey” Opened in 2016, Copper Trail Brewing Company offers a variety of craft beer, along with entertainment and a chill place to hang out. Owned by Alexandria graduates Adam Graf and Dave Gibbons, Copper Trail, which boasts 13 employees, made a big change a year ago when it moved its taproom to a new and bigger location in downtown Alexandria. The move provided the brewing company with

more opportunities to grow and experiment. And even with all the challenges due to COVID-19, the downtown location has given them more room to meet those challenges and adapt the best way possible. Copper Trail beer, which is offered in the taproom, can also be found in six packs at liquor stores in Alexandria, as well as at many liquor stores throughout the state. Graf and Gibbons said they strive to provide not only the best craft beer and variety for their customers, but create an overall experience. And they also do their best to support their hometown community just as much as the community has supported them.

The business is locally owned and takes pride in bringing Mexican cuisine to residents in the Alexandria area. “Mi Mexico is a true fixture in the community, cooking up world class food and providing a festive place for groups to gather and enjoy quality time and quality meals,” the business said.

WINTER FAMILY FUN Andes Tower Hills 4505 Andes Road SW, Kensington 320-965-2455 Andes Tower Hill, a ski hill that has served more than a million skiers since the Anderson brothers opened it in 1981, was again chosen as the best place for winter family fun in the Best of the Lakes Area contest. “We’re appreciative of all the votes,” said General Manager Tom Anderson. “In the wintertime, people like to get outside. Sliding down a hill is really high on the fun list, whether it’s skiing or tubing or cross country skiing.” In addition Andes offers a cafeteria, a pro shop and rentals.

This year, they augmented the October snowfall with their snow guns and opened the bunny hill on Oct. 24. They announced it online that morning and 175 came just so they could say they went skiing in October. Hundreds more followed during subsequent days. “This is the first time we ever had a costume contest during Halloween,” Anderson said. One out of three customers travels from the Dakotas, and everyone is greeted by friendly staff – as many as 85 people work there. Recent improvements include paving Andes Road and a new run, called “Vegas Boulevard,” named after Tom’s late brother Jerry Anderson, whose nickname was “Vegas.” It’s a “cool little barrel run that goes through the woods,” Tom said. “It’s one of those runs that feels like you’re out in the middle of nowhere.”

On its Facebook page, iBeach Tan & Nails posts a parade of pictures of the fun, glittery and unusual fingernails it creates. Halloween nails incorporated spooky webs and blood drops, while a set of wedding nails used a small white flower and mini tiara. “We care about how you look!” the company says. “We are a team of dedicated and experienced nail techs here to give you the look that you need. We strictly focus on the quality of our service to bring you the most beautiful nails ever.” iBeach’s services include manicure, pedicure, nail enhancements, waxing and tanning. It maintains strict standards for cleanliness and sterilization.

The brewery offers beer tasting and beer by the glass and also has growlers and bombers, which are

As for Carlos Creek Winery being chosen as the best winery in the lakes area, owner Tami Bredeson said, “I think we were chosen because our business has touched the lives of so many in the area. Either through hosting a wedding or event, attending the Grape Stomp or Oktoberfest, bringing family and friends over when they are in town, or working here. We’ve been a part of many happy moments.” The winery also had the distinction of having the best wine selection. Bredeson said the winery makes

LIVE MUSIC/PERFORMANCE VENUE LOCAL COMMUNITY EVENT Andria Theatre 618 Broadway St., Alexandria 320-762-8300 “Excellent entertainment , miles from New York, right on Broadway” The Andria Theatre started in 1970, and its mission is to enrich people’s lives while providing unique per-

formance and educational opportunities. “This being a community theater, the area residents have a real feeling of ownership,” director Ann Hermes said. “When they attend, they are attending their theater.” Three full-time employees as well as two part-time employees staff the theater, which provides on-site and off-site entertainment, education and volunteer opportunities. Volunteer positions include ushers, actors, cleaners, assistant costumers, box office helpers and clerical helpers. “The present world pandemic has forced some significant changes on all,” Hermes said. “For the theater, we feel fortunate to be able to financially weather the pandemic thanks to a fundraiser spearheaded by Bruce Pohlig.” Shows are currently run at 25 percent of the building capacity, or around 80 people. Staff members

were furloughed for several months, cast sizes were cut and the youth education program was suspended until the pandemic ends. Though the theater also won best local community event for Art in the Park, the annual fundraiser was cancelled this year due to COVID-19. On a lighter note, Hermes shared a fun fact: Oscar-winning actor J.K. Simmons, who was also in Farmer’s Insurance commercials, has performed on the Andria Theatre stage.

RESORT

Arrowwood Resort & Conference Center 2100 Arrowwood Lane NW Alexandria 320-762-1124 https://arrowwoodresort.com/ “It’s just more fun at Arrowwood Resort!” That’s not just a slogan. It’s a big reason why it was selected as Best Resort in the Alexandria lakes area. Arrowwood Resort has been providing guests with fun memories since 1971. “We offer a casual atmosphere, great food, great service and we are the only one located right on the lake,” said Shari Prause, co-general manager and director of sales at Arrowwood. It’s also a major employer. Most years, staff ranges from between 150 to 300.

This year, because of COVID-19, the number of staff members has ranged from 11 to about 200. Besides providing a great getaway on Lake Darling with many activities, Arrowwood Resort also offers a golf course, executive putting course, and a full-service marina where boats and personal watercraft are filled with gas while guests eat and enjoy dinner inside and outside. It also has a full-service spa and banquet services all year long for any kind of event. Arrowwood started an exterior renovation in January and finished part of the project in May. The remaining portion of the lakeside and front side of the resort is set to be finished in the later part of 2021. Look for the fun to continue at Arrowwood next year. “2021 will be our 50th year,” Prause said. “Get ready for a celebration!”

Lake Country Meats opened its doors in 2013. It’s a family affair at the meat shop as the whole Cole family works there. It is owned and operated by husband and wife, Butch and Tracy. Their two children, Chandler and Alexis, also work at the family business. Tracy Cole said there are about 14 employees at Lake Country Meats, which offers a full meat counter, full smokehouse and custom processing of any wild game. “We hire a lot of high school kids, teaching them work ethic,” said Cole, who also noted that they feed their staff every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Lake Country Meats also has a deli where staff slices and packages sandwich meat daily

to ensure the best quality. The store also carries homemade salads, such as potato salad, macaroni salad, broccoli salad and a seasonal cookie salad, that can be ordered for special events. “Our customers appreciate the fresh quality meat and customer service they get from us,” said Cole. “We offer trusted products with consistent quality.”

WEDDING/PARY VENUE Gathered Oaks

4550 County Road 34 NW, Alexandria 218-979-2101 A wedding and event center nestled in the heart of lake country in Alexandria, Gathered Oaks opened for business in the summer of 2017. With a staff of about 16, it offers small and large-scale events and lodging for weddings or family gatherings, or a place for a unique stay while exploring Alexandria and the surrounding area. In 2019, Gathered Oaks added an on-site grain bin lodging option, which went viral in a video on TikTok. Gathered Oaks is owned and oper-

ated by a married couple – Anne and David Larson – and managed by their son and daughter-in-law, Andrew, who is the event and property manager, and Tessa, who takes care of sales and marketing. A fun little fact that Tessa Larson shared is that there are several other couples who are part of the Gathered Oaks family. “We do our very best to provide an extraordinary experience for couples getting married and their families, and all who join us here for the celebration,” said Tessa Larson. “We’re thrilled to be voted Best of the Lakes Area and hope that our standard of service and attention to detail is to thank.”

They currently have five employees, and four are members of the Roers family. Other than a few new cleaning

techniques, Roers said they haven’t changed much this year. “Still making all the old favorites and experimenting with some new creations,” he said.

BREAKFAST Travelers Inn Restaurant

511 Broadway St., Alexandria 320-763-4000 Originally established in 1928 and family owned since 1967, Traveler’s Inn Restaurant currently has 25 employees and continues to make improvements to better serve customers. “We’re just continuing to evolve our breakfast menu to cater to some newer customers as well as our traditional dishes that are always good,” owner Patrick Sieve said.

Some of these new options include lemon ricotta pancakes, breakfast tacos and avocado Benedict. The restaurant makes its food from scratch for a great value, providing efficient and enjoyable service to those who eat there. Like many businesses, Traveler’s was closed during the COVID-19 lockdown for around three months. The restaurant also added a back patio, which Sieve said they felt forced to do to keep people safer when they opened back up. “After seeing it up and operational, we realized that it would be made to stay for a while,” he said. “It worked really, really well for us back here.”

Michael B’s Resort Bar & Grill is the place to be. The popular restaurant was selected for serving the Best Dinner in the lakes area. It’s inside the VIking Plaza but also offers outdoor seating for beautiful mild days. D.Michael B’s – or DMBs for short – has a long history in Alexandria. It opened in 1985 and employs about 45. When asked why so many people selected DMBs for the award, owner Dave Bistodeau replied, “Well, all I know is that we work hard

BUFFET Pizza Ranch 1522 Broadway St., Alexandria 320-762-4010 Pizza Ranch, which opened in Alexandria in 2005, is owned by Dan and Tracy Gray. pickup – both inside and curbside. During the coronavirus pandemic, Gray said, Pizza Ranch has developed a safety plan, which includes masks, gloves for employees, optional gloves for customers and extensive cleaning checklists that are performed several times throughout the day. In addition, they have curbside pickup or contactless delivery options available. “Our customers love the ‘Buffet your way’ option,” said Gray. “The buffet always has a wide variety of food, but we are happy to make their favorites on request, which is unique for a buffet.”

every day to serve good food along with giving great service. We make our soups and sauces from scratch.” In the past year, the restaurant painted the exterior and is always making changes to the interior. A new attraction was recently added just outside its doors in the mall – Grandpa Rudy’s Little Western Town, a miniature display of the Wild West era painstakingly restored by Jeff Roste of Alexandria. It was created in 1957 by his grandfather, Rudy Barthel. The decision on where to put the 20-foot display came easily, as Bistodeau is a friend of Roste. Bistodeau said the town meshes well with the restaurant’s northwoods theme. DMBs had planned to celebrate its 35th anniversary this past July but then COVID-19 hit. But stay tuned. “We intend to celebrate next July – get ready,” Bistodeau said.

Although Pizza Ranch offers a variety of pizza, it is also known for its chicken. In fact, Gray said many cus-

tomers have suggested calling the restaurant Chicken Ranch because the broasted chicken is so delicious.

house, nursery, landscape design, landscape installation as well as home, garden and Christmas decor. They grow and provide annuals, vegetables, herbs, house plants, poinsettias, perennials, fruit trees, shrubs and shade trees. Owner Lynelle Brickweg said she thinks her business was voted Best Landscape/Irrigation and Best Florist/Greenhouse because of the variety of quality, healthy plants and trees they sell, and that their knowl-

edge helps customers maintain thriving gardens and landscaping. Depending on the time of year or what season it is, Colorful Seasons employs between 10-15 people. A fun fact is that Colorful Seasons uses 13 local greenhouses where they start growing their own annuals, vegetables, herbs and perennials in February-April. “Most people think the greenhouse at the store is our only greenhouse,” said Brickweg.

This year, Colorful Seasons saw many more first-time gardeners coming through their doors. Because of the pandemic, customers had time to garden and many were also interested in growing their own food. To keep customers safe, Colorful Seasons is sanitizing carts and using masks, plexiglass and directional arrows.

Raapers/The Catering Company Alexandria 320-760-6619

2020 was a tumultuous year for Raaper’s Eatery & Ale in downtown Alexandria. A fire destroyed the building in February. But the loss opened up opportunities. “Despite the loss of our building and restaurant, we have put all our focus on the Catering Company this past year and added a food truck to our business,” said owner Andy Rassat. “The show must go on and God is so good to us that he has opened doors that we thought were closed forever.” Andy and his wife, Cammie, feel blessed that people selected their business as the Best Catering Company in the Alexandria lakes area. When asked why so many people voted for them, Andy said, “I’m really not sure! We just continually strive to always do our best for our customers, maybe that’s the reason. No matter why we were chosen, we are honored to be selected as Alex-

for choosing Ellingson as your favorite HVAC, Plumbing and Electrical Company for the fifth year in a row! andria’s No. 1 caterer again. Thank you Alexandria! We miss you all so much.” Raaper’s first opened its doors in 1996 and the catering business was added in 2008. The Rassats remain optimistic about the future of the business, which is reflected in their business slogan, “Raaper’s/The Catering Company – you are only limited to your imagination.” It’s a full-service catering company that customizes each and every event. “We feature anything from boxed lunches, to extensive grazing tables, butler passed appetizers, buffet service, late night chef-assisted munchies and even our Raaper’s/Food Truck Nation service,” the Rassats said. “We specialize in weddings and corporate events, featuring on-site grilling and chef-assisted buffets.” The Rassats aren’t sure what the future holds for them. “But we do know that God has a big plan for us!” they said. “So we are trying to be patient and answer his call. Who knows? A bigger and better Raaper’s may be erected on Broadway in the near future. Only time will tell.”

It’s an honor to have the support of the community. It means the world to a team that always gives their best each day.

nine years of operating this old country store, which he remodeled into a convenience store, Lambert’s gas supplier and friend, Kurvin C. Fish, suggested that Don buy the Square Deal Oil Company. Don followed his advice and purchased the service station with a three-bay garage in Boone, Iowa. Using the knowledge from his store in Des Moines, Don converted the gas station into a convenience store. The Boone store was named “Casey’s” by using Kurvin C. Fish’s initials. The third store was built in another small community with a population of only 1,500 – Waukee, Iowa. This was the first Casey’s built totally from scratch and proved to be the best store yet. At this point, Don realized he was on to something

The Juettner Motors dealership was started in 1976 by Jack Juettner and has been owned by family members ever since. There are currently more than 40 employees. New and used vehicle sales within the Ford, Lincoln, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram models are the business’s main focus. Juettner Motors also offers a full-service department for gas and diesel vehicles, a parts department and a collision center for vehicle body damage. The business also donates to local groups and benefits. For example, the Car Care

Juettner Motors was one of the first dealerships in the country to combine two vehicle franchises under one roof. Dealers from all over the country contacted Jack Juettner for years after the business accomplished this to ask how he did it. Jacob Juettner discussed how selling a car includes many steps, including making the sales process go smoothly for the customer, being as transparent as possible, moving at the customer’s pace, providing the customer the information needed to make the best decision and avoiding the customer feeling pressured to buy something. “At Juettner Motors, we really are all about doing our best to provide our customers with the best experience in every department,” Jacob Juettner said.

They do it well. The business was selected as the Best Physical Rehab Facility in the Alexandria area. Heartland’s physical therapists are specially trained in treating musculoskeletal problems that hinder an individual’s ability to move and lead their daily lives. Such problems may result from overuse injuries, trauma, sportsrelated injuries, surgery, disease, and accidents. Dr. David Larson started treating

musculoskeletal system disorders in 1974 when Alexandria Orthopaedic Associates opened. In 2009, the business became Heartland Orthopedic Specialists, a better reflection of their growing patient area and expanding geographic reach. Heartland Orthopedic Specialists Physical Therapy started in 2004 with two therapists and expanded on their previous facility. In 2010, they moved into their current facility, over 2,600 square feet with a dedicated gym for rehabilitation exercises and cardio machines. Heartland’s rehab team — four physical therapists, two athletic trainers, a patient access representative, and a director — is supported by 10 physicians, six mid-level providers, and roughly 70 teammates. The coronavirus pandemic forced Heartland to enhance its safety practices to prevent the spread of the virus.

“Now, with these enhanced safety measures in place, we are providing the same high-quality experience

built a culture that is client-oriented and empathetic while also highly educated and passionate. Noonan offers semi-private personal training, a system of scheduled workouts that delivers high accountability, and one that provides clients a program tailored to their goals, likes and abilities. They also help develop athletic ability for students from third grade through high school. The pandemic has prompted Noonan Sport Specialists to make major changes to prevent the spread of Covid-19. They rearranged the gym space to create “workout pods” to maintain physical distancing. They doubled down on sanitization and cleaning protocols. And they offered outdoor training for clients who felt more comfortable outside.

CAR WASH Woody’s Car Wash 1223 Broadway Street, Alexandria 320-763-5473 “Get your shine on!” The 22 employees at Woody’s Car Wash take pride in their work. Woody’s was chosen once again this year as the area’s best car wash, and for owner Chris Wittkamp, the reason is simple. It is because of the quality of its wash. “We take pride in making sure all

vehicles get their shine on,” he said. “It’s the personal touch and hand drying that matters.” Not only does Woody’s offer a quality full-service car wash that includes hand-drying all vehicles, it also has six self-serve car wash bays, and four vacuums to clean the inside of your vehicle. It even cleans boat lift canopies. It all makes for what Wittkamp calls a family atmosphere at Woody’s. “We have fun working, and it’s very rewarding seeing a clean vehicle after our hard work,” he said.

Beyond the pandemic chances in 2020, Glenwood State Bank has hired several new employees while implementing online account opening and loan applications.. When staff began working from home because of the pandemic, they submitted themed photos of themselves or their families, McMahon

said. Staff turned those photos into slideshows for virtual staff meetings. “The slideshows helped us feel connected to our work family when we couldn’t all be together,” McMahon said.
