Message from the President ...

Building Relationships in 2017

Dave Kent

Chamber President

For 110 years, the Alexandria Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce has worked on behalf of its members to help make the area what it is today. We are blessed with a unique blend of manufacturing, tourism, retail, health care, educational, financial and agricultural institutions, strong law enforcement and fire departments, robust service organizations and caring residents. Others want what we have. Your Chamber recognizes this and works tirelessly to help us stay ahead of the competition. The Chamber board and staff have worked to identify goals and strategies to maximize the value we provide. A theme that emerged revolves around relationships. Engagement starts with relationships and shared purpose. The past two years have been marked with leadership changes in a

number of key community organizations. We as an economic community have an opportunity and a necessity to re-establish relationships, build new relationships and collaboratively work toward our shared vision of a community that thrives long into the future. For these reasons I have chosen “Building Relationships” as the 2017 Chamber theme. As legendary football coach Vince Lombardi once said, “Individual commitment to a group effort – that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.” Dave Kent, 2017 President Alexandria Lakes Area Chamber Board of Directors

Message from the Executive Director ...

A unified community is a thriving community

Tara Bitzan

Executive Director

2016 was a year of transition for the Alexandria Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce, and we are ready to head into 2017 with an energetic staff, an engaged and committed board, a strong and supportive membership, and a community full of incredible collaborators. This is an exciting year for the Chamber, as we celebrate our 110th year of serving the community – a business community that has long known that a unified community is a thriving community. Board President Dave Kent chose “Building Relationships” as the Chamber’s theme for the year (see his message on Page 4), and it couldn’t be more fitting. An intense strategic planning session created a clear vision for our organization for the next few years, and at the center of each of the four identified initiatives are relationships. You can see those initiatives on Page 4.

We will build collaborative relationships with other local entities because we know that individually we are all doing great things, but together we can have a greater positive impact on our community. We will foster positive, effective relationships between staff, committee members, board members and volunteers to create the framework for operational excellence. We will strengthen and improve all functions of the Chamber, including events and programming, to better serve our members, and make it easy for members to see the benefits of being part of the Chamber. We’re excited to build a stronger relationship with you in the year to come! Tara Bitzan, Executive Director Alexandria Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce

Upon Chamber Board approval, those positions are presented to legislators and government officials. The committee promotes legislation that benefits Chamber membership and serves to make Alexandria the ultimate destination to

The committee is currently in the process of discussing priorities, reviewing pending legislative initiatives, and visiting with elected officials to convey local priorities. Alexandria Area Young Professionals The Alexandria Area Young Professionals (AAYP) was established to “enrich the lives of the area young professionals in their 20s and 30s through networking, education and community involvement.”

The group offers opportunities for young professionals to meet other people in their age demographic, get involved in the community, learn more about the local area and enjoy social and networking opportunities. While it falls under the umbrella of the Alexandria Lakes Area Chamber

of Commerce, a person does not have to be a member of a Chamber member business to join this organization. The group hosts luncheons the first Thursday of every month. Other social, networking and community service opportunities are also held throughout the year. 2017 STEERING COMMITTEE Brian Walli, Chair Brenton, LLC Mariah Berry, Vice Chair Studio C Salon Susan Brown, Event Coordinator Bremer Bank Jana Schaumburg, Marketing Coordinator Signmax Melissa Amundson KXRA-KX92-Z99 Radio and VoiceOfAlexandria.com Katie Anderson Gate City Bank Marie Vatnsdal, Chamber Liaison Alexandria Chamber of Commerce

Pictured are (left to right) Mark Grandgenett, Alexandria Area Economic Development Commission president; Michelle, Kim, Tami, and Tyler Bredeson of Carlos Creek Winery; and Mike Doyle, Alexandria Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce president.

Business and Industrial Appreciation Day Carlos Creek Winery was the 2016 Business and Industrial Appreciation Day (BIAD) honoree. The honor, bestowed annually since 1984, is co-sponsored by the Alexandria Area Economic Development Commission and the Alexandria Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce with the purpose of saying “thank you for being a vital part of our community.” Recipients are selected based on the following factors:

~ Growth in number of employees and impact of the business on the job market. ~ Increase in sales and/or unit volume – an indication of continued growth. ~ Capital investment – an indication of commitment by the business to increase community capacity. ~ Community contributions – evidence of the investment of time, skills and resources to assist in community-oriented projects.

Carlos Creek Winery opened in 1999 and was purchased by Kim and Tami Bredeson in 2007. It has grown a reputation for producing award-winning wines, offering a popular venue for weddings and other special events, and for attracting 15,000 people to the area for its annual Grape Stomp celebration. For information on BIAD, call Marie Vatnsdal at (320) 763-1489. For more information on Carlos Creek Winery, visit www.carloscreekwinery.com.

Wake Up Alexandria! Wake Up Alexandria is a popular Chamber event that offers networking and business promotion opportunities the first and third Friday morning of every month. The events are hosted at a different business member location each time, from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. With at-

tendance typically at 75 to 100 people, the event offers a great opportunity for hosts to showcase their business and staff. Wake Up Alexandria is open to everyone – members and non-members. A “buck and a business card” get you in the door. The business card is for prize

drawings, and the buck is for the nonprofit of the day, also called the “Morning Moolah” recipient – a Chamber nonprofit member selected by the hosting business. Any Chamber member can give a 45-second announcement at the event, which is a great way to

share special promotions or information. The event ends with the Pot of Gold drawing (see next page for details)! For more information on Wake Up Alexandria, call Jess Ptacek at (320) 7633161.

Pot of Gold The Pot of Gold drawing is a highly anticipated part of each Wake Up Alexandria event (see facing page for information on Wake Up Alexandria). The Pot of Gold is generously sponsored by Chamber member businesses who donate business items, coupons, discounted services and gift certificates to add to the pot’s value. The sponsoring businesses are promoted through Chamber Eblasts and

on a display sign at every Wake Up Alexandria event. Every Chamber member is included in the drawing. If the member drawn is present, the business wins the Pot of Gold and distributes the prizes to its employees. Those employees then utilize the prizes included in the pot, with the hope that a business connection is made and a new customer or client is “won.”

If a representative of the business drawn is not present, the pot continues to grow until the next Wake Up Alexandria event. In 2016, the Pot of Gold was won four times, with total winnings valued at $5,974! For more information on the Pot of Gold, call Jess Ptacek at (320) 7633161.

The Runestone Chapter of Business Networking International (BNI) was the Pot of Gold winner at the September 2016 Wake Up Alexandria event. The pot was valued at more than $1,100!

I am most passionate about sharing the love of Jesus to my family, friends and community. A growing passion of mine is serving others; I want to instill this in the hearts of my children. Other passions include continuous improvement, both professionally and personally. I am blessed to have a career opportunity at Alexandria Industries that allows my passions to merge.

Describe your leadership philosophy.

My leadership philosophy became very clear the first time I heard Mark Deterding teach Servant Leadership. I had a “feeling” about leadership for many years but could not put it into words. The model of servant leadership speaks directly to my heart and passion for others. Developed through Mark’s Leadership Roundtable sessions, this is my purpose statement: to share Jesus’s love to my family and community through service, leadership and teaching.

What professional accomplishments do you take the most pride in?

During the 12 years of my banking experience, I started out as a teller/customer service rep, then moved to back office operations and compliance, and finally to consumer lending where I am today. This experience has enabled me to not only help our members but also to help educate them. Accomplishments outside of work would have to be becoming a firefighter and EMT.

Describe your community and volunteer efforts.

I have been a volunteer firefighter for the past nine years with the Glenwood Fire Department and have been very involved in fire prevention and education in our community and schools as well as fire instructing with MNSCU. I have been a volunteer for Take A Kid Fishing, Habitat for Humanity, and Special Olympics of MN. I also serve as an EMT on Glacial Ridge Ambulance.

Member Advisor II, Affinity Plus Federal Credit Union

What are you most passionate about?

Helping people! I wouldn’t be the person I am today without that drive to help people. Affinity Plus has allowed me to use that passion and drive to help our members in all sorts of environments. Improving the quality of life for people is my end goal. Whether it’s emergency services or helping someone with their financial goals, seeing that look of excitement or relief is what keeps my drive to continue helping in any way I can.

Describe your leadership philosophy.

Lead by example and live by the golden rule. Growing up, this is what my dad has taught me and how he led his company to success. Always treat others as you would want to be treated yourself. Over the years, I’ve learned how to take a step back and look at the big picture.

I think being an attorney is a professional accomplishment in its own right. I take pride in the work I do and in being able to help my clients through some of the best and worst times in their lives. I am also proud to prosecute for the city of Alexandria because every case is the chance to have an active role in improving public safety in the community.

Describe your community and volunteer efforts.

I am president of the Central Lakes Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors and a violinist with the orchestra. I am a member of the Board of Directors for the Viking Sportsmen and on the committee for the annual Youth Outdoor Activity Day. I am a member of Alexandria Rotary, Alexandria Area Young Professionals, and an alumnus of Leadership Alexandria. I also volunteer my time and music at various churches and the AAAA Theatre.

Attorney, Swenson Lervick Syverson Trosvig Jacobson Schultz Cass, P.A.

What are you most passionate about?

I am passionate about my family, my job, music, and everything this area has to offer. I am not originally from Minnesota, and I feel very blessed to have ended up where there are great restaurants, live music nearly every night, and an impressive school system for my children to attend. Though it sounds clichĂŠ, I am also passionate about honesty and justice and do my best personally and professionally to uphold and demonstrate both.

Describe your leadership philosophy.

A great leader needs to understand his own strengths and the strengths of his team and assign tasks accordingly. That way, he can focus on the direction of the overall project and trust the team to make it a success without having to be micromanaged. However, he is approachable and no job is beneath him if he needs to jump into the trenches to help team members or correct course if something goes unexpectedly awry.

Committed to building communities through excellence.

What professional accomplishments do you take the most pride in?

What are you most passionate about?

Going back to school while continuing to work and lead a team. I have an amazing wife who supports my endeavors. Going back took most of the little time we had, but she encouraged me to pursue my goals. This positioned me to get into the role I am in today. I hope one day my kids will see that you can achieve what you want if you are willing to work for it.

Describe your community and volunteer efforts.

I am a believer that kids and especially young boys need to have a positive role model in their lives. That is why a lot of my community involvement revolves around helping youth. I volunteer with the AWANA program at New Life Christian Church, teach firearms safety, and volunteer with Junior Achievement in District 206. I also am the president of Greater Lakes Area Safety and Health (GLASH).

I am most passionate about my family. My wife and I have six kids, four of which are adopted. It has been amazing how our family has grown and become stronger. The Leadership education I have gotten from Alexandria Industries has made me a better husband and father. I want to make sure all of our employees are able to work safely so they can go home and be with their families.

Describe your leadership philosophy.

I have been learning about the Servant Leadership model. It is amazing how leading with a kingdom purpose can have such a positive impact on not only yourself but also your teams and organizations. I have looked at my teams as family. It was always amazing to see how our teams come around each other in times of need. I have always tried to build that culture with my teams.

I’ve been blessed to watch our Y grow and expand since we opened in 2010. Through Y-USA’s leadership program, I am taking courses to achieve a Y-USA “Organizational Leader” certification. Working at the Y has provided opportunities to pursue a passion in health and wellness as in my current role as senior program director, where I oversee and am involved in our health and wellness department. Over the years, I have achieved several group fitness certifications.

I am most passionate about Y members. I love when a member tries a group fitness class for the first time and falls in love forever. I love seeing every age and level of activity trying to live a little bit healthier, and I am blessed to be part of that wellness journey. Members often cite staff support and enthusiasm as key factors in their achievement of greater well-being – knowing that keeps me motivated to exceed their expectations.

Describe your leadership philosophy.

Growing up on a farm taught me more than a few things, but perhaps what I can relate the most to my leadership style is: “If not you, then who?” Back then, that pertained to farm duties, but today, I find that by actively participating in operations, it drives the passion and the pulse for the work we do, the people we serve and the people I lead.

Even though I may have done education the non-traditional way (Accounting Diploma, then AS in Accounting, then AA, then BS in Accounting, still working on my MBA), I have continued and value my education. Through hard work and dedication, I strive to continue constant growth professionally every day.

What are you most passionate about?

Quality of life. Not just for myself and my family but for those around me and the community in general. Living by these values every day allows me to live a life of passion and quality. And football – Skol, Vikings!

Describe your leadership philosophy.

Traditionally, leaders are seen as the individual in charge of a team, but I think leadership is found through teamwork on every step of the ladder. Leaders are those who inspire those around them to exceed their personal best. Leaders of all kinds are driven by passion and personal responsibility, not rules and regulation. I strive to lead by example, lead with compassion, and lead with a smile of encouragement through difficult times.

Being a manufacturing engineer for Alexandria Industries for over nine years has allowed me to work with a variety of projects. I take pride in designing and building manufacturing machines that produce millions of parts. The combination of multiple engineering disciplines required to create the machines draws on skills I’ve acquired through experience and education. Collaborating between numerous departments and team members with a variety of technical skills allows for the successful creation of the machines.

Describe your community and volunteer efforts.

I enjoy volunteering with area schools, whether it’s at elementary schools, the technical college, or any level between. Programs such as Junior Achievement and Freshman Academy Network allow me to give back to the community and share my professional experiences. Being an advisory

committee member for Center for Applied Mechatronics at Alexandria Technical and Community College has allowed me, with Alexandria Industries, to offer an internship to a student. It’s rewarding to see students’ enthusiasm to contribute and learn!

What are you most passionate about?

As an engineer, I’m committed to continually developing new skills from education, training, and experience to stay prepared with creative manufacturing ideas that support the short-term and long-term goals of the company. At home, my passion is being a husband and a father; I enjoy spending as much time together as possible with my immediate and extended family.

Describe your leadership philosophy.

I utilize the servant leadership model. I lead by example; leadership to me means having my own set of values to live my life by and guide my decision making. I believe in empowering others by passing on my skills and experience to help them reach their own personal and professional goals. I bring a positive mindset every day, whether I’m spending the day with my family at home or with colleagues at Alexandria Industries.

What professional accomplishments do you take the most pride in?

My professional pride comes from working alongside my father, uncle, family friend, and dedicated employees providing our customers with outstanding service and products.

Describe your community and volunteer efforts.

Through our local businesses it is important to me that we donate, volunteer, and re-invest in our community. For 13 years I was a volunteer firefighter with the Garfield and Alexandria Fire Departments. The past couple years I have focused my time volunteering as a board member of the Alexandria Area Baseball Association, and as a baseball coach for local and traveling youth baseball teams.

Co-Owner, Alex Rubbish & Recycling Inc, Pro-Tainer Inc., and Douglas County Demolition Landfill Inc.

What are you most passionate about?

I am most passionate about my wife and kids, along with the continued success of our businesses, and my role as a youth baseball coach.

Describe your leadership philosophy.

Everything starts with your attitude. Maintaining a positive attitude and leading by example is a leadership quality I strive for. I believe in our team of employees to do what is best for our customers and products. I try hard to stay away from micro-managing, which makes it easier for me to make the right future decisions for our businesses to have continued success.

What professional accomplish- ing Nativity, teach cribbage at Senior Center, CEO of Ugly ments do you take the most pride Facial Hair Contest fundraiser for Male Cancer Awareness, emcee for St. Mary’s Casino Night, Jingle Bells, Love INC, in?

I take pride in being a husband, father, friend and financial associate at a healthy balance. I’ve helped many people from ages 18-96 be wise with their money, and helped them live generously. After 11 years as a teacher and being out of this career for five years, I love that I still get invited to former students’ graduation parties and weddings. I was part of the beginning partnership between the YMCA and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Describe your community and volunteer efforts.

Volunteer in son’s third grade class and daughter’s first grade class; organize Ultimate Frisbee Nights to join men for fellowship and non-profit collections; Love INC Development Committee member; AAHS Freshman Academy Network Coach; Leadership Alexandria participant; Santa for Seniors volunteer, tallest Shepherd at First Lutheran Liv-

and Awake the Grapes 5K.

What are you most passionate about?

I love connecting people. I want to be a “gatherer” and have “this person meet this person.” There are many amazing people in this community. Often people just think our world is a bad, scary place. I believe the opposite – that there are many amazing, supportive people. Let’s learn from each other, grow from each other, laugh with each other. It’s a cool feeling when you can connect two strangers for a new friendship.

Describe your leadership philosophy.

In the book ON FIRE, the author poses a question that resonates with me: “Is it more important to live a life of success or a life of significance?” I want to live a life of significance and make a positive impact. Are my wife and I leading our children in treating people respectfully? Do my kids know what it means to give back and think beyond themselves? Do my peers know significance is more important than success to me?

CONGRATULATIONS SHAYNEN...

May you have many more years of success and higher achievements. You have made us proud.

GOOD JOB!
