ALEXANDRIA RESPONSE FUND In February our community was struck with tragedy when a fire destroyed downtown businesses and apartments of local residents. The Alexandria Response Fund (ARF) was established to collect financial support from our community to help those in need. Through generous community support, we were able to grant $38,500 to help. Little did we know, the ARF would be used again so quickly when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Local organizations sprung into action to help those without childcare, food or employment. We have been able to grant over $101,000 to help the following non-profits as they continue their important work.

The Alexandria Area Community Foundation (AACF) is your foundation. Since 1992, the AACF has been providing innovative ways for area residents and businesses to give back to their community. Our mission to engage people, connect resources and build community, is working! In 2019, Alexandria was named the BEST town in Minnesota; what an achievement! Our commitment to education, healthcare, tourism and recreation, the fine arts, and business and manufacturing, all combine to make us an exceptional community. At the end of the day, however, I believe it’s the generous and compassionate spirit of our community members that really defines Alexandria. On behalf of the AACF, I would like to sincerely thank those who have supported us in the past and encourage your continued support. Together let’s continue to do great things! This is your community and the AACF is your foundation. Optimistically Yours, Josh Tatge, AACF Board Chair

RUTH MCDONALD AWARD IN PHILANTHROPY R CIPI NT While we were unable to celebrate philanthropy at our annual celebration this past May, we would like to recognize Jeanne Batesole and Vern & Judy Anderson as this year's Ruth McDonald Award in Philanthropy recipients. We will all gather in the future and celebrate their contributions to our community. Congratulations Jeanne and Vern & Judy!

Jeanne Batesole Jeanne Batesole’s love for Alexandria comes from her late husband Virgil who grew up on Lake L’Homme Dieu. After retiring in 1990 and moving to the area, Jeanne decided the best way to get to know people was by becoming involved. Jeanne has served such local organizations as the Alexandria Technical and Community College, Douglas County Historical Society and Theatre L’Homme Dieu. Jeanne has also been an active member of Lakes Area Professional Women and in 2010 she was recognized with their Spirit of Philanthropy Award. We are honored to present the Ruth McDonald Award in Philanthropy to Jeanne for her service and love of the Alexandria area.

Vern & Judy Anderson Vern Anderson, co-founder and previous President & CEO of Douglas Machine and Douglas Scientific, and his wife Judy have been married for 57 years and have lived in Alexandria since 1966. They have served our community through a number of organizations including the Unity Foundation, Douglas County YMCA and the Northstar Christian Academy and Sports Complex. We are pleased to present the Ruth McDonald Award in Philanthropy to Vern and Judy as a thank you to their commitment to the Alexandria community.

GIVING STRATEGIES

Field of Interest Funds A Field of Interest (FOI) Fund allows the donor to create a fund for a specified broad purpose. Donors with particular issues of concern or passion may focus their giving by setting up this type of fund. Funds are established with a simple letter of agreement between the donor and the Foundation. Examples of AACF FOI Funds Include: Alex Splash Pad Fund Jennie Hevern Fund Legacy Gardens Capital fund Ruth McDonald Fund

Scholarship Funds A Scholarship Fund Fund allows the donor to create a fund to assist area students in continuing their education. Donors can choose to set up a fund to benefit students from a particular high school or post secondary institution. Examples of AACF Scholarship Funds Include: Thomas J. Agency Funds

Getting to the Basics • Donor Advised Funds Establishing a fund is easy and allows you to give to any eligible 501(c)3 nonprofit organization A Donor Advised Fund of $20,000 can immediately begin to make grant distributions You immediately receive the maximum tax deduction that the IRS allows for that contribution Most assets can be charitably gifted to your Donor Advised Fund including cash, stock, real estate and life insurance

Legacy Society Dedication to the community can be demonstrated in several ways. There are those who are able to see the effects of the funds during their lifetime and others who make provision to provide for the community in the future. The Foundation's Legacy Society recognizes those individuals who have made a provision for a future gift to the Foundation through their will, trust, retirement or life insurance plan - as well as donors who have chosen to receive lifetime income, while providing for a future gift to their favorite causes, through a charitable gift annuity or charitable remainder trust.

This is Ruth.

Ruth talked to her attorney and made a plan to establish an endowed fund with the AACF to support health programming and families living in poverty. Her legacy will live on for years to come. How can we help you be like Ruth?

The Community Foundation currently holds agency funds for a variety of organizations including schools, churches, and a wide range of other nonprofit agencies. Some funds are permanent endowments, while others serve as a type of reserve fund for the charities. Examples of AACF Agency Funds Include: Father Alexander P.
