2019

Welcome to the Douglas County Fair Welcome to the 2019 Douglas County Fair. Our motto is, “Making memories to last a lifetime.” According to fair history, the residents of Douglas County decided in the late 1800s to hold a fair sometime after the harvest season. More than likely this event was held to exhibit the Don Kleine successes of President, community DC Agricultural Association residents for all to see. The 2019 fair continues that legacy with the hard work and support of many who desire to pass on the benefits of that early legacy to Douglas County and now many central and west-central Minnesota residents. A quote from the 1924 premium list: “The fair belongs to the people of Douglas County.” Indeed, this is your fair. Your fair is not owned or managed

by any government entity. Your county fair is put on by the Douglas County Agricultural Association. Any Douglas County resident can join. Dues cost only $5 per year and at the annual meeting all members can vote for the Fair Board members. It is the dedication of your current Fair Board and the support of many businesses and individuals that make your 2019 fair possible. One major change for 2019 is that the fair will run Wednesday through Saturday instead of Thursday through Sunday. After consulting key participants, and much discussion, the board voted to end the fair Saturday night. This change will allow a full day of activities each day throughout the fair. With this change, we will officially open the fair on Wednesday, Aug. 14. The gates will open at 8 a.m., buildings will open at 10 a.m. and admission will start being charged at 1 p.m. The fair will run until 10 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17. We will evaluate this change and remain open to evaluating what are the best days to hold the fair. The 2019 Douglas County Fair will feature four days of great entertain-

Big changes for the Old Schoolhouse

The school district is taking over programming at the schoolhouse this year By Karen Tolkkinen

Big changes are afoot for the Old Schoolhouse this year. Long a beacon for kid’s activities during the fair, the historic building will be used to showcase the Alexandria School District. “We are planning to pack the day full of activities for all of the days,” said Lynn Jenc, director of the district’s Community Education. “All four days will feature something completely different than what it’s been in the past.” Wednesday will be geared for adults, with an all-school reunion and an afternoon coffee connection allowing the public to meet school administrators. On Thursday, Compass child care program staff will organize the tallest Lego sculpture contest and crafts. They will also bring the modern equivalent of toys popular in 1952, the year the schoolhouse moved to the fairgrounds, such as hula hoops, Playdoh and slinkies. Grandparents might have played with those same toys when they were kids, and they can share their experiences with their grandchildren, Jenc said. Later that day, the district’s Food and Nutrition

Services will provide samples of food, while the evening will find community education instructors conducting short courses on homemade lefse, fitness, pet first-aid and design. Friday will showcase middle school and high school clubs, activities and programs throughout the day, including technology and robotics, physical and mental challenges, the arts and Healthy Voices Healthy Choices discouraging substance abuse. The Cardinal mascot will make an appearance. Saturday will focus on pre-kindergarten programs, all six elementary schools and transportation. Musikgarten teacher Karen Tolifson will sing and play the guitar and kids can dance. “It’s a great opportunity for kids to get the wiggles out,” Jenc said. Visitors will get a chance to see how the school teaches music, science and art. Later, a school bus will arrive, and staff will demonstrate the technology used onboard, such as GPS and tracking students, Jenc said. There is a chance that a vintage school bus will show up as well, to demonstrate how buses have changed over the generations.

The Old Schoolhouse once belonged to School District No. 59/475, Three Oaks School, in Leaf Valley Township between Garfield and Miltona. The district was established in 1875. The schoolhouse moved to the Douglas County Fairgrounds in 1952. Until the mid-1990s, District 206 took care of fair programming, and used it to showcase school projects and school history. A traditional one-room schoolhouse, it has traditional desks and a working bell. It has been well preserved. Since the 1990s, it has been primarily used for smaller group activities during the fair. Occasionally, over the years, retired teachers would come in to tell stories about teaching in a one-room schoolhouse.

Jenc said the programming is designed with the whole family in mind, from kids to parents and grandparents. Many activities will take place outside the schoolhouse, where

there is more room to run around, she said. “We’re very excited to showcase a lot of the district’s hallmarks of prides,” she said.

New foods, vendors at the fair for 2019

Deep fried chocolate chip cookies? Beer-battered deep fried fish? They’re coming, along with four new non-food vendors

A couple of new foods will be on hand during this year’s fair, one filling a void, the other adding to the general fair food decadence. Beer-battered deep fried fish will make an appearance, which is welcome, because there have been no fish offerings at the fair, said board member Darla Engstrom.

Maker Mark Lee, of the Twin Cities-based Firehouse Foods, said he uses local beers when possible to batter the fish. Then, to sink into a well of sweet calories: Deep fried chocolate chip cookies with whipped cream. The cookies are made fresh daily, then deep fried, Engstrom said.

They are made by Twin Cities-based Funkies Foods. New non-food vendors so far in 2019: •Selective TV, a non-profit, viewer-supported organization developed over 30 years ago to bring unscrambled television programming to Douglas County and the surrounding area.

10 Fair Essentials  2019  dcmnfair.com

•Sunshine Boutique from Lino Lakes, which sells a variety of women’s clothes. •Garrett & Garrett from Carlos, which sells novelties, toys and knives. •Who Has Buttons from Fargo, which sells custom buttons, coasters, clocks, and refrigerator magnets.

Halls of Magic Kevin and Janet Hall will perform their comedy and magic act that sent them to Las Vegas during the 2011 America’s Got Talent competition. The pair perform in Minnesota and Nevada. Kevin Hall dances, sings, twirls fire, saws women in half, turns

flat dolls into women, and a range of magic tricks. They have performed at casinos, resorts and the Mall of America. At the Douglas County Fair, they will perform on the 4-H Stage at noon on Wednesday and Thursday.

Local Livestock Eats Corn & Soybeans Grown by Farmers Locally

Livestock is the No. 1 customer of soybean meal, consuming 98% fo the soybean meal produced in the U.S.

Livestock is the No. 1 customer of corn, consuming just over 40% of the corn crop produced in the U.S.

The livestock sector contributes more than $16.4 billion to Minnesota’s economy.

Lawn mower demo derby

The clash of riding lawn mowers has proved so popular that the event is returning to the Douglas County Fair for the third straight year. This free event is planned for 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15 at the Grandstand. To enter, visit www.dcmnfair.com. Under the information tab, click

on “Competitions and Contests,” and scroll down. Derby contenders must be at least age 14. Those under age 18 must have parent/ guardian signed and notarized permission to participate. There is no entry fee, and prizes of $50-$300 go to the top six finishers.

This year’s beef at the 4-H food stand will be provided by the Douglas County Corn & Soybean Growers and their checkoffs. “To promote and create opportunities for the profitability and sustainability of Douglas County Corn and Soybean Growers while promoting agriculture and enhancing our rural quality of life.” Fair Essentials  2019  dcmnfair.com 11

Music every night ust 15 at 7 p.m. I Witness plays Thursday night, Aug This year, the Douglas County Fair will offer free live music every night, rain or shine on the Alomere Health Main Stage. “If it rains, we’ll move into the Runestone Community Center,” said Darla Engstrom, a Fair Board member. These regional bands have proven drawing power, such as St. Cloud’s Fabulous Armadillos, Minnesota country act Shane Martin

and local band I Witness. As it did last year, Tripwire will perform Saturday night. Look for them all at the Alomere Health Main Stage. Here’s the rundown: WEDNESDAY, AUG. 14: Fabulous Armadillos recreates songs from many musical genres, including country, Motown, heavy metal and 70’s soft rock. Their name came from a nickname for keyboardist Greg

This year, every night of the fair will feature music, from the Fabulous Armadillos to TripWire “Gary D.” Armstrong, once a member of the Bobby Vee Band, and they call their fans “Dilloheads.” They will play at 7 p.m. THURSDAY, AUG. 15: I Witness, a local classic rock band, performs music from artists ranging from Led Zeppelin to Adele. I Witness got its name because it rents a building that was once a Jehovah’s Witness church; it

is not, as some might think, a Christian band. Their show starts at 7 p.m. FRIDAY, AUG. 16: Shane Martin was a Top 5 finalist in the 2012 Texaco Country Showdown where he competed for “Best New Act in Country Music” at Nashville’s legendary Ryman Auditorium, hosted by LeAnn Rimes. regional shows per year, and his band consists of veteran musicians that have performed at some of the top country music festivals in the country, including Moondance Country Jam, Rockwoods Jamfest and Winstock. Martin will play at 7:30 p.m. SATURDAY, AUG. 17: Tripwire, a Fargo cover band, incorporates trampolines, choreographed moves and more than 10 instruments into its act. Their playlist veers wildly across genres, and includes the Rolling Stones and Bob Marley as well as Meghan Trainor and Taylor Swift. The group formed in 2004 and picked up two consecutive awards during the short-lived North Dakota Music Awards, “Best Rock Cover Band” in 2015 and “Favorite Rock Band” in 2016. Members Mark Arneson, Tim Melin, Lars Hegland, and Brandon Cummings all grew up in Minnesota, with Arneson the nearest, hailing from Fergus Falls. Tripwire performs at 7 p.m. ALSO ON SATURDAY Hailing from Long Prairie, Red Letter Band will bring its original country music to the Main Stage from 12:30-3:30 p.m. The six-member band began as a youth movement in a little country church, according to its Facebook page. Four of its singles have reached the top of the Inspirational Country Music charts, which tracks musicians who carry a message of faith, family and country. “Our goal is to be relational and personal through music,” Red Letter Band’s page says. “We are followers of Jesus Christ, which greatly influences our music.” Event times are subject to change – for the complete daily schedule, visit www.dcmnfair.com.

Tripwire will take the stage on Saturday, August 17 at 7 p.m.

Several demonstrations are on tap at Heritage Square at the fair this year, including making ice cream, churning butter, spinning woold, carving wood and weaving in traditional ways.

New for seniors at the fair this year Heritage Square is known for demonstrating the skills of past generations, and this year is no exception. On Wednesday, the Douglas County Historical Society will offer a demonstration potluck, including a range of “old time ways” such as making ice cream, churning butter, spinning wool, carving wood, or weaving, said organizer Kathryn LeBrasseur. “We call it a potluck as we do not have a definite schedule,” she said. “It will be a potluck of the old ways of doing things and you will take your chance on what to see at the time you stop by.”

The historical society will also bring pictorial displays of the fair’s origin, she said. Thursday is Senior Citizen Day, and the eight senior clubs of Douglas County will host programming at Heritage Square. On Thursday this area will be hosted by the County Committee on Aging, the county’s eight senior clubs. Local service and care providers will run booths from 11 a.m.-5 p.m., ready to share information about a range of services for seniors, such as fuel assistance, housing, in-home care and transportation.

Under the overhang will be the State Telephone Program with displays of the free telephones for the visually and hearing impaired and the State Legal Services for the Blind with visual aid equipment and information about how the visually impaired can remain independent in their own homes. At 2 p.m., a program on the stage will honor the county’s Outstanding Seniors and Century Farm family, followed by free coffee, cake and cold drinks. For each day of the fair, the Log Cabin at Heritage Square will feature ethnic

food demonstrations by Alexandria Senior Center volunteers from noon to 7 p.m.. Old favorites of lefse and rommegrot will return, LeBrasseur said, and there will also be German meatballs, rosettes, doughnuts and breads at various times. And this year, people can listen to music at Heritage Square without fear of rain or hot sun, thanks to a new overhang installed by the Fair Board.
