TIRES

ave you looked at your tires lately? If your car has some mileage, chances are your tires are getting worn out. If you can see the wear without even asking for a mechanic to check the car, the time has come to change those tires. Nowadays, the best rule is to run winter tires during the cold season and summer or all-season tires during the warmer seasons. Still, there are rules to be followed. First, no matter how old the car is, if you intend to drive it fast or on long runs and if you want to keep it for a few more years, it is better to buy a good quality tire to replace the worn out ones on your vehicle.

An easy DIY project to transform your

dresser

A

re you tired of looking at your old dresser? Getting rid of it isn’t necessarily your only solution. In fact, you could give it a whole new look with only a little bit of effort. Here are some ideas for quickly transforming that old piece of furniture into a beautiful dresser.

Paint brushes to the ready Use paint to give your dresser a new identity. A pastel or saturated color? A warm or cool tone? A matte finish or glossy lacquer? All these choices will allow you to unleash your creativity. You could even choose a different color for each drawer, draw stripes or geometric shapes, or paint designs using a stencil. For an antique look, choose patina-effect paint.

Operation wallpaper Wallpaper is extremely popular at the moment; it’s perfect for transforming a dresser. You can use the same wallpaper for all the drawers or opt for different patterns. For example, if your dresser has several rectangular drawers, you could play with patterns and colors to create a patchwork effect.

DIY

If you don’t want to get into painting or wallpapering, you could update your furniture by simply changing a few details. Replace the drawer pulls with new ones and add moldings to the drawer fronts to give them extra character. Or use classy decals to give them your personal touch. Breathing new life into a dresser doesn’t take much time or money. What’s needed most to complete this project is a creative imagination.

How to accessorize your rooms with

A

style

harmonized palette of colors and beautiful furniture aren’t all it takes to create a great decor. You still need some well-chosen accessories to add the finishing touch. Drapes, lamps, rugs and cushions should never be chosen randomly; they make all the difference to how a room looks and feels. Here are some rules to follow when accessorizing your home.

Define your style Think harmony; for example, contemporary or industrial-style accessories in a rustic country decor would seem incongruous. Of course you can play with contrasts for an element of surprise, as long as you keep in mind that an accessory must still look natural in the room.

Think about the light Choose different accessories depending on whether you want to attenuate or accentuate the natural light coming into the room. For example, stainless steel door handles and mirrors reflect light, while wooden paneling and a wool carpet absorb it.

Be careful about color Choose accessories in colors that contrast with those of the walls if you want them to stand out. If you’d rather create a neutral monochrome effect, opt for accessories in the same tones as the room’s basic color scheme.

Consider proportions Accessories should be selected based on the size and dimensions of the room. Imposing accessories appear to dominate a narrow room, while small objects seem lost in open spaces.

Dare to be daring Do you think your favorite decorating magazine wouldn’t agree with your choices? Never mind what others think. Don’t be afraid to express yourself; the important thing is to create a room that suits you and that feels good to inhabit.

A distinctive

Paint

for the kitchen

eal estate agents say that the kind of backsplash you see in a kitchen is a good indicator of how well the rest of the house is finished. The backsplash is the wall space between the kitchen cabinets and the countertop. A good, high backsplash adds a classy finishing touch and also helps you keep the walls clean.

backsplash

You can update a bare wall or dated backsplash tiles by adding some color. Choose latex paint that’s specially designed for kitchens. Prepare the surface to be painted by cleaning with a strong degreaser. After a good scrubbing, you’ll have to apply at least two coats of paint.

Wallpaper Wallpaper is an affordable solution, but it has a more limited half-life as it tends to peel off over time. Opt for vinyl-coated pre-pasted paper to facilitate hanging and for easier cleaning and maintenance.

Tiles Ceramic and porcelain tiles are a popular choice. They’re inexpensive and easy to install and keep clean. Imitation stone and brick tiles, which are more porous, must be coated with a sealant before installation.

Mosaic tiling Self-adhesive mosaic tiling is a great option when the underlying surface isn’t even. These squares are flexible and offer perfect imitations of glass, stainless steel, or ceramic tiles. It’s easy to install; just cut it to size, remove the protective film over the adhesive, and then stick it on the wall.

The perfect kitchen countertop There are so many countertop materials available these days: ceramic, laminate, concrete, stainless steel, marble, and recycled paper. Given the abundance of choices, it can be hard to come to a decision when the time comes to choose redo your work surfaces. To help you out, here is an overview of the main materials available on the market.

Color If you want to choose from a wide variety of colors, go for ceramic, laminate, or solid-surface materials. Recycled paper and glass, granite, and concrete are also available in colors that allow you to customize your kitchen.

Maintenance Solid-surface materials, A combo of criteria

engineered stone, laminate, and stainless steel require little maintenance. Concrete and marble, on the other hand, require a sealer to be applied once or twice a year. Both granite and soapstone require regular maintenance.

Price Ceramic and laminate are affordable. Stainless steel, butcher-block style wood, and granite are also accessible for modest budgets, whereas recycled paper and glass, solid-surface materials, engineered stone, soapstone, and marble are all relatively expensive.

8 April 2015 • Spring Home Enhancement

Apart from the price, other factors can influence the choosing of a kitchen countertop. Ceramic is affordable but scratches easily, while butcher-block style wood and laminate don’t stand up well to heat. Recycled glass and paper are expensive but eco-friendly.

TO REORGANIZING

YOUR PANTRY

Your pantry’s a real combat zone? Your dry staples are spilling out of their bags, powdered spices cover the shelves, and there may even be a mouse in there somewhere. When your pantry is a total mess, you can never find anything, and when you do, it’s way past its expiration date. The time has come to solve this problem once and for all.

Sort Before reorganizing, a major cleanup is required. Empty the pantry and wash the shelves with a non-toxic cleaning product. Take an inventory of what you have; you may find that some foods are duplicated and some are no longer edible. Sort everything, discarding expired foodstuffs and setting aside for the food bank any unopened items that you’ll never use.

1

Store If you want your pantry to be an effective storage space for your food, it all has to be clearly visible. Use clear containers made of plastic or glass to store your various foods. Opt for square or rectangular containers, as they stack and store nicely; round containers tend to waste space. Place your flour, cereals, rice, and pulses in airtight containers to keep them out of reach of insects. If necessary, label the containers.

2

Organize Organize your shelves by category: macaroni with spaghetti, flour with sugar, dried basil with parsley. Alternatively, you can group together foods that you usually combine, such as pasta and tomato sauce. Place foods you use most frequently at the front of the middle shelves. Store candies, cookies, and treats high up, away from the children, and keep heavier bags and packages of food on the lower shelves to avoid accidents. So, now it’s time to get to work; you’ve got a lot to do!

The art of outdoor

A

fter all those long winter months spent indoors, the time has come to get outside and live in the sunshine and fresh air. Enjoying the backyard from morning until night, in a comfortable and stylish space, is within everyone’s reach. All it takes is a bit of imagination and some clever shopping.

The third rule

Outdoor living is much more than just a passing trend. Long gone is the era of the picnic table and folding lawn chairs set out in the middle of the yard. The deck is an extension of the home; it is a place to relax, cook, eat and entertain, without any sacrifices in comfort.

Be willing to pay for good quality. Of course, your budget will guide your choice of garden furniture, but there’s no point setting up an outdoor living area if it will all be sun faded and falling apart after a season or two. Bistro style metal furniture is fine for happy hour on the deck, but if you’re really planning on spending the summer outside, it is worthwhile to purchase durable and comfortable furniture.

The first rule

Decorating essentials

From living room to kitchen

Outdoor furniture has to be weather resistant. Teak wood is a favorite material, as it is extremely durable. Imitation wicker, made from synthetic fibers, has also been increasing in popularity for several years now. This type of garden furniture is elegant, resistant to the whims of Mother Nature, and easy to clean.

The second rule Garden furniture has to be functional. The modular sofa hides an integrated storage space for cushions; the dining table is extendable; and the cooking area contains all the amenities so you can avoid trips back to the kitchen – cooking grill, sink, side table to store dishes, and a small fridge.

Décor plays an important role on a deck. Just as in the rest of your home, the design of your outdoor oasis should reflect your tastes. Opt for rugs, cushions, and accessories that show your furniture off to advantage. Add a trellis or create a screen with plants for more privacy. Use different colored plant pots for garden herbs or to make a pretty annual flower garden. Hanging pots will also help define the space and create an impression of privacy. Lighting is another important element for outdoor living. Relaxed, soft lighting will help you to create a cozy atmosphere on long, hot summer evenings. You’ll also have to think about installing practical lighting as well, so you can see what you’re doing.

Discover the

HOTTEST DECORATING STYLES

A

re you searching for just the right home style that suits both your personality and your furniture? Here are two styles that deserve some recognition.

Newspaper Toolbox

The eclectic style

Scandinavian style

You don’t want to limit yourself to one trend? The eclectic style allows you to mix different decorating styles and artistic influences from around the globe. If done tastefully, you can combine materials, textures, colors, and eras. You’ll need to avoid a cluttered look. The trick is to know how to play with the contradictions while creating coherence. For example, you can choose different prints for each cushion, as long as they have the same base color. The eclectic style is good for daring people who want to express their personality.

You love wood, simplicity, and elegance? You should try the Scandinavian style; it combines these three characteristics to perfection, in addition to creating an impression of openness and light in every room. Utilitarian light-colored woods, such as pine or birch, are widely used for both floors and furniture. Light-colored paints, particularly white and blue, are popular for the same reason. Mirrors, glass accessories, porcelain, and silver are added to complement the decor. Of course, there are plenty of other decorating styles worth exploring. An exotic look evokes faraway places, and a tastefully done rustic style is never out of date. Retro is fanciful, and the contemporary look is uncluttered. So, what’s your style?

Grasses sold in pots at garden centers can be planted throughout the summer season. Don’t forget to respect spacing requirements, as some varieties need a lot of room. Most species like to be divided every three or four years and are much more vigorous as a result. Ornamental grasses are generally easy to grow. Most species prefer full sun and adapt to nearly all types of soil; very few species are shade tolerant.

andscaping specialists are unanimous in their opinion: ornamental grasses give yards a look of freedom and have an incomparable ability to play with natural light. Grasses bring a touch of lightness to landscapes with their gracious waving lines, and they contrast so wonderfully with other plants. They are also appreciated for the beauty of their flower heads and their overall look. There is no doubt that grasses are at their best in natural landscapes. However, they also lend themselves to many other types of settings. For example, you can plant them close to any colorful annuals as well as rose bushes. They will show each other off to advantage. Grasses remain spectacular right through the winter as well, so don’t make the mistake of cutting them back in the fall. They’ll be one of the wonders of your

Finally, a functional

LAUNDRY ROOM

E

ven though doing the laundry is never a fun task, it can be downright depressing when the laundry room isn’t even designed for the purpose. Here are some tips to help you organize a functional laundry room. • If possible, your laundry room should be near the center of the home, thus making it much more accessible for everybody chipping in with the chore. • Adapt the room to laundry-related tasks. Set up a work surface to fold laundry; it could be a simple countertop placed over your front-loading appliances. Install a line or rack for drying clothes that don’t go in the dryer, and clear an area near an electrical outlet for setting up the ironing board. • Organize as much storage space as possible, including shelves, cabinets, baskets,

and hooks. Use the space above the appliances and under counters. • Think ergonomics: Elevate your appliances to save your back; place them next to each other to facilitate the transfer of laundry from the washer to the dryer; use wheeled laundry hampers; and install recessed lights to ensure you have enough lighting. • Maximize small spaces with pocket doors, stacked appliances, a retractable clothesline or folding drying rack, and a foldup table. For a laundry room that’s as beautiful as it is functional, alternate open and closed storage spaces, and choose vibrant or soothing colors. Opt for colorful appliances and personalize the room with accessories that make it as welcoming as the rest of your home. 001136557r1

H

uman skin is a popular feasting ground for mosquitoes during the summer months, especially when the heat and humidity are high. However, some plants can help you thwart these annoying insects without having to resort to commercial repellents. That is good news for gardening enthusiasts who prefer not to use chemical-based products. The first step to a mosquito-free back yard is to not attract them in the first place. Don’t leave around containers of standing water. Stagnant water is where mosquitoes breed, so store empty containers upside down and cover raincollecting barrels with a thin layer of netting. Citronella is known to be a good natural mosquito repellent. The essential oil extracted from this aromatic plant contains molecules that repel insects, which is why mosquitoes detest its lemony smell. Other mosquito repelling plants are lemon thyme, bee balm (horsemint), basil, pelargonium (geraniums), and verbena. The more the plants are exposed to the sun, the stronger their perfume is. Night-time watering also helps. The best places for these plants are in pots on window ledges or in containers on your deck. Some gardeners also like to grow these mosquito-repelling plants in flowerbeds and in large vegetable plots.

Treat yourself to the

yard of your dreams UPGRADE in STYLE Roof deck You don’t have enough space to create the deck you’d like? Well, you’ll just have to build it on the roof – if that’s feasible, of course. Picture yourself sitting comfortably, enjoying the scenery, the natural light, and cooling breezes. So, how will you make the most of your deck: cozy summer evenings with friends or just hours of outdoor relaxation?

Water garden Nature lovers will love the idea of creating their very own ecosystem by constructing a beautiful water garden behind the house. A large pool, various water plants, and some fish will turn your backyard into a real paradise. Think big and add some water fountain jets and a lighting system to showcase this oasis of tranquility.

“For Quality Concrete & Masonry Construction”

Outdoor kitchen Still haven’t found just the right place for your barbecue? Building an outdoor kitchen would certainly solve the problem. It will take some beautiful weatherproof furniture, an outdoor fridge or a couple of refrigerated drawers built into an island (which could also be used to store dishware), one or two extra burners, some green plants, and an ice maker for the bar area. You could even purchase an outdoor heating system so you can enjoy your summer kitchen longer. Are you feeling inspired?

A

re you thinking about undertaking a major landscaping project in order to transform your yard? Here are some great ideas to inspire you.

HEAT: A CAR BATTERY’S WORST ENEMY

I

ntense heat and overcharging are two factors that can substantially reduce the life of a battery. Heat causes the liquids contained in the battery to evaporate, which in turn causes damage to its internal structure. Heat also has an accelerating effect on the chemical reactions required for batteries to function, which means the batteries produce more power at a higher temperature. On the other hand, overcharging is often the result of a poorly functioning voltage regulator. You can, of course, have your battery checked by a professional in order to ensure that it is in good working order. However, a simple do-it-yourself test can save you a trip to the garage. The first step is to use a multimeter to check if the charge

is at the right level – it should be between 12.5 and 12.7 volts at rest and between 14 and 14.7 volts when functioning. Your battery will have to be replaced if there seems to be a problem. Otherwise, a visual inspection could help you detect a problem before it occurs. Check that the sides of the battery aren’t swollen, which would be an indication of aging or overcharging. Ensure that no debris or moisture has accumulated between the terminals, as either could divert the electrical current and drain the battery. Keep an eye on the positive terminal as well, where an accumulation of sulfate could indicate an internal problem. In general, a car battery should give optimal output for four or five years.

WASHwithout YOUR CAR scratching the paint

N

ow that summer is on its way, car owners will start hauling out the bucket and sponge and hose for a bit of car washing on a Sunday afternoon. Sweet paradise! However, did you know that the majority of people do more harm than good to their car’s paint job simply because they aren’t aware of a few basic rules? First of all, never, ever use home cleaning products, such as dish soap or laundry detergent, on your car. These detergents are not designed for sheet metal or high gloss paint and should never be used for this purpose. There are loads of soaps on the market specifically designed for washing cars. The next thing to remember is to always use a microfiber cloth when washing your car. After all, you don’t want to spread the dirt around and rub it into the surface of your paint with a wash mitt or brush, do you? You should also avoid using circular motions when washing your car. That way you won’t make spider web-shaped grooves on the paint’s surface. After you’ve got your vehicle looking like new, think about applying a paint sealant. This step is best left to a professional who will be able to recommend the appropriate product for your vehicle and your requirements. A good sealant can protect your car against damage from rock fragments and other debris for two full years, making it a great investment.

MAKE WAR ON

I

STAINS

f you live in a place where winters get rough, then the inside of your vehicle gets subjected to some pretty harsh treatment There’s no respite from snow, mud, sand and road salt. First of all, it’s essential to have the right products. Car specialty stores and big box stores have entire aisles of products dedicated to automotive care. Be sure to use the appropriate products. Use gentler products when cleaning leather and leatherette. This product includes a protective coating that restores suppleness to leather. The use of foams designed to penetrate deep into the upholstery is a must for fabric seats. Applying a sealant will help protect these surfaces after they’ve been cleaned. Cleaning carpets is simpler but it requires much effort. Vacuum to remove as much embedded debris as possible. Next use a specialized product or, in the case of bad stains, a steam cleaner. A water and vinegar solution can work miracles when it comes to road salt stains. If the stains don’t disappear straight away, repeat the process.
