WEDDING GOWN styles for 2019
With all the information available to brides from magazines and social media, it’s easy to be overwhelmed when it comes to making all those decisions for your big day. One of those will be selecting your gown. First and foremost – this is a very personal decision, so you need to look at styles that are uniquely you. Here are a few of the most popular trends on the runways for 2019 to give you some ideas.
royally inclined
The wedding of Megan Markle inspired gowns with boat neck and off-the-shoulder necklines, as well as clean and minimal silhouettes. Along with those clean lines, the royal wedding has also returned tiaras to the line-up.
big bows
Although they have always been popular, this year oversized, structured bows that turn into trains; loops to tie straps and metal versions.
romantic sleeves
Billowy fabrics with a Victorian inspiration are high on bridal wish lists. Nothing like your mother’s gown of the 80s, these sleeves also have exaggerated trims; modular, layered panels and accentuated shoulders in lengths from cap sleeves to full-length.
jumpsuits/bridal minis
Yes, jumpsuits. They’re featured in styles for the wedding after-party, including flowy and bohemian, all-over lace, cigarette pants and peplum overlays. Jumpsuits are also perfect for reheasal dinners or for casual weddings. Another after-party look, minis in metallics with feather trims and vibrant color pops are what’s hot for that second wedding dress.
geometric designs
Some designs will see the floral lace and sweetheart necklines replaced by geometric patterns and shapes, whether it be in the straight lines of the cut to the details of the fabric, cutouts and trim.
jewel tones
Even though pastels are still popular, 2019 will see a rise in jewel tones in embroideries and metallic accents, as well as ombré skirts.
shrugs
Perfect, especially for the fall and winter seasons, shrugs and wraps are a perfect accessory for your wedding gown.
glitter
Dresses boasting sparkle can come in any design. Over-the-top beading, reflective confetti or just sparkly fabric all are part of this season’s line-up.

When it comes to your
WEDDING DRESS, white isn’t your only option If, at a time in the past, the boldest move you could make when it came to the color of your wedding dress was to pick off-white instead of a pristine snowy shade, that’s simply no longer the case. Like most rules, the one that dictates the color of your wedding dress is meant to be broken—and more and more brides are taking the plunge. Read on for some inspiration. Did you know that the white wedding dress has only been popular in North America since the nineteenth century? Before then, it was customary for the bride to wear—you guessed it—a colorful dress! Today, the brightly colored dress is making a comeback and designers from around the world are reinventing this vintage trend. While shopping for a non-white wedding dress
might have been a tricky task a few decades ago, boutiques are now stocked with gowns in every color of the rainbow – and then some. Whether you’re in the market for an electric pink ball gown or an emerald green A-line, your local bridal boutique is sure to deliver the goods. On the fence about your color choice because you fear you’ll shock your guests by choosing an unconventional gown? Remember that this is your day and that you have the final say on what you wear. That being said, there are ways to compromise: you could incorporate a colored sash or veil in your look or choose an all-white dress with colorful stitching. So, will you let your true colors shine through with your dream wedding dress?

halterneck
Updated with a sleek, sophisticated feel, the halterneck dress returns, giving off-the-shoulder and strapless wedding dresses a run for their money.
light fabrics
This year, light, airy fabrics are everywhere. Stay clear of thick, compact materials, which weigh down the silhouette. Embroidered feathers are a great way to add an ethereal touch to your gown.
bold black
Black has been making an appearance on runways worldwide. While most designers use it in small 6 I Do! Bridal Guide 2019
touches (on hats, sashes or gloves, for instance), some are daring to unveil all-black dresses.
crop top
Midriffs were on show again on runways as the crop top made a return. Designs included clean, polished crop tops and matching skirts.
show-stopping shoulders
Bare shoulders are on trend. Popular dress styles include strapless, halter and off-shoulder.
daring necklines
Transparency and lace are popular this season, as are illusion neck-
lines (covered by a light, sheer fabric) and deep, plunging V-necks. Corsets are as essential as ever.
3-d details
These days, the biggest names in haute couture have been showcasing a variety of dresses featuring 3-D floral embellishments.
metallic
Sparkly shades of metallic fabric from champagne to rose gold make for eye-catching appeal, giving brides an option to stand out a little more than a white dress, but not as daring as a color.

Embrace a
classic look
Classic is the name of the game for 2019. This year, brides will will opt for a more natural look, one that highlights their best features with a bold accent, such as wine colored lips and faux lashes.
rosy hues
Hues from burgundy to soft pink, the rosy colors are perfect for this year’s bride and complement every face. Try using a soft color on cheekbones, but add in classic ruby red lips.
dewy skin
Brides will be avoiding matte foundation on their special day and instead will be opting for more luminous skin and an all-over glow.
bronze eyeshadow
Bronzed lids are taking the place of more daring colors when selecting eyeshadow. The range of colors to pick from will amaze you – from metallic to matte brown, you can create a smoky eye in a more simplified style. This eye color looks good on all faces. 8 I Do! Bridal Guide 2019
give them wings
Whether you decide on a bold look with a thick line or a thinner, more subtle look, winged eyeliner is this year’s special touch for your eyes. If you’re uncertain about using liquid liner, you can substitute strong sweeps of charcoal eyeshadow.
bold eyebrows
Bold brows have been in style for a few years and still looks good today. Striking shaped brows will give your face an unforgettable look.
bandeau hairpieces/ headbands
Accessorizing hair with bandeaus and headbands that glitter give the bride a Meghan Markle-inspired look. Not as strong a statement as a tiara, but still brings to mind a regal feel.
bold hair accessories
Towering headpieces, large hats and oversized flowers were seen on runways as hair accessories, making a bold statement.
relaxed hair
Softly gathered hair or half-upsweeps with a few loosely hanging tendrils give brides a relaxed, nocare look. Intentionally messy hairstyles give you an effortless look.
bangs/ center parts
Bangs give a bold, chic look and can be styled in many ways, from a blunt, short cut to long and wispy. Center parts had a strong showing during the Fall 2019 Bridal Fashion Week. The style can be sleek and pulled back or with more volume and less structured.
waves/low bun
Big waves and curls will give you a more glamorous look for your wedding, while the low bun paired with a statement necklace will show off the neckline of your gown.
touch-up kit To make sure your makeup stays in perfect style, prepare a touch-up kit to keep you looking fresh. Include a handkerchief, lipstick, blotting tissues and a compact powder.

be smart about beauty preparation
A
ll eyes are on the bride and groom on their wedding day. Feeling beautiful and dapper can boost a couple’s confidence and ensure they look back on their wedding photographs and videos with pride. Certain beauty basics and makeup and hair strategies can help any bride look spectacular on her wedding day. The following are some do’s and don’ts of wedding day beauty preparations.
DO employ the services of a professional hairstylist and makeup artist. Professionals have the experience and tools of the trade to help you to look your best. From contouring to make your face seem slimmer to enlarging the appearance of small eyes, some tricks of the trade are best left to the pros. DON’T forget to schedule a trial run. Make this appointment several months before the wedding day so you have ample time to work with your stylists and experiment with colors and hair arrangements to fit your personality and the style of your gown. Take plenty of pictures and notes so you will remember what needs to be on hand for the wedding day. DO allot enough time for the wedding day beauty appointment. If you will be going to a salon, block out two or more slots instead of one. This way the stylist does not overbook and will not feel rushed. Many brides opt to have stylists come to their homes. There may be an extra charge for this service, but it may be well worth the cost. DON’T wear too much under-eye concealer or one that is too light of a shade. This can draw more attention to problem areas than remedy them. DO wear a little extra makeup than you are accustomed to wearing because it will show up better in photos. However, do not wear so much that you look clownish. A makeup artist can help you achieve the right balance. 10 I Do! Bridal Guide 2019
DON’T make any drastic changes to your appearance right before the wedding. This includes changing your hair color or texture, extreme tanning, using colored contact lenses, or chopping off all of your hair. It’s better to wait until after the wedding to change your style. DO bring a veil, headpiece, hair extensions, and any other accessories to your hair consult. This enables the stylist to practice working with these items. DON’T tweeze or wax brows too close to the start of the ceremony. Redness and swelling are common side effects of tweezing and waxing, and they can be difficult to mask with makeup. Instead, take care of hair removal a day or two prior to the wedding. DO exfoliate your skin prior to the wedding. This doesn’t necessarily mean you should endure a harsh fruit acid peel or another procedure. You can exfoliate with a gentle washing of your skin with a nubby washcloth to remove any dryness and errant flakes. Moisturize well to ensure a smooth palette for makeup application. DON’T have bridesmaids wear makeup that is bolder than yours, especially red lips. No one should upstage the bride. DO experiment with any products you haven’t used before to test for allergic reactions and see how well they wear. DON’T forget that men need a little help as well. Exfoliation and moisturization can help dry skin. Guys should use a new razor and plenty of cream before shaving to avoid irritation. A dusting of finishing powder can banish shiny noses and foreheads for photo-ready faces. Chances are more photographs will be taken of a newlywed couple than at any other moment in their lives. Certain beauty do’s and don’ts should be followed so couples put their best faces forward.

three-piece suit
Back in style, although never really gone, is the three-piece suit, sophisticated and well-tailored. And the best part? As your wedding day transitions to evening and formal to casual, just remove the suit jacket and push up your sleeves to relax at the after celebration.
try tweed
Slim cuts and contrasting colors in tweed can give you a unique twist and add fun and personality to your attire.

slim fit
Think colorful! Vibrant suits that range from purple to bright blues and burgundy to green are taking the place of tradition grey and dark blue.
Straight or tapered legs and a slim jacket will emphasize your upper body and give a masculine silhouette.
mix texture and color
Tennis shoes, a trend that was very popular, has found its way out. Think smart and sophisticated, making sure to match the style of your outfit.
Don’t be afraid to implement a varity of shades and colors to help you stand out. Textures, colors and patterns can be mixed and matched to give you an individual look. Use the same cloth for the groomsmen but in different shades and colors. Even subtle differences will stand out.
snappy shoes
fitted shirt
A loose-fitting shirt might be a little more comfortable, but having your shirt fit will help keep your outfit looking polished.
fun socks
Don’t forget your feet! Socks are a great way to bring out your personality, so grabbed a fun, patterned pair that coordinate with your attire!

Will you get married in a
necktie
or a
bowtie?
You popped the question, got a yes, and now you’re planning every detail of your wedding day. Future husband – it’s time to think about what you’ll be wearing when you exchange your vows! The dilemma is quite real: will you choose a necktie or a bowtie to finish off your look? Here are some thoughts to help you make this important decision. The bowtie: a classic. You can’t go wrong with the traditional bowtie. Match it with your tuxedo for a sophisticated look, or dare to be different with a velvet, knit or wooden bowtie that matches your wedding’s color scheme. Show stopping looks guaranteed in any case. The tie: a more relaxed option. Thinking of getting married in a suit and tie? Go for it! The good old necktie has become a popular option for the modern groom. From the distinguished traditional version to more avant-garde options, ties are available in endless patterns, colors and textures. You’re sure to find one that fits your personal style to a T. Have you decided yet? If you’re still on the fence, ask a stylist or knowledgeable salesperson for advice. D005911267

Choosing the perfect When it comes to accessories that complement your wedding dress, your shoes are arguably the most important. You want your footwear to both reflect your personal style and be comfortable enough to wear as you dance the night away. Choose your dress first. You’ll want to match the style of shoes to your dress. Make a statement. Shoes are a great way to add a pop of color to your wedding attire.
Five ways to
Make sure they fit. The best time to shop for shoes is in the late afternoon. If they’re comfortable after a day of work, they’ll fit perfectly on your wedding day. Don’t experiment with high heels. If you’re not used to wearing heels, don’t attempt to wear them at your wedding. There are many flat and wedge styles that make beautiful – and comfortable – bridal shoes.
accessorize
Jewelry and accessories have the power to take your weddingday attire from dainty to absolutely dazzling. Here are a few runwayinspired trends to try for your big day. Earrings. Asymmetrical earrings are all the rage this year, with some brides even choosing to sport a single, bold dangler. Feathers and other boho-chic touches are also on trend. Pearls. Pearls are making a comeback. Include them in your ensemble with earrings, a necklace or pearl-embellished gloves. 14 I Do! Bridal Guide 2019
wedding shoes
Shoes. Decorate your feet with elegant ankle-strap shoes. This season’s most popular models are delicate and feminine and bear a resemblance to anklets. Black. All-black accessories are popping up in wedding-themed fashion shows the world over. Surprise your guests with a black necklace, broach or belt. Embellished gloves. Long or short, gloves are definitely trending this season. Choose a pair that’s embellished with lace or rhinestones for an elegant, romantic touch.
Bring them to your dress fitting. If your dress is long, it’ll need to be adjusted to the height of your shoes. Break them in. Wear your shoes around the house to avoid any nasty surprises on the day of your wedding. If they’re tight or uncomfortable, bring them to a shoemaker to stretch them out a bit. Lastly, don’t forget to book a pedicure before your wedding. Nothing looks better in stunning shoes than prettily pampered feet.

Fresh take on an old
custom
You’ve probably heard the 19th century bridal rhyme: “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, and a silver sixpence in her shoe.” Are you thinking about incorporating the associated traditions into your wedding but want to do so in a modern way? Here are some fresh ideas.
You put your trust in each other... ...now put your trust in us!
something old
Create a display of vintage photos of loved ones Incorporate your grandmother’s pearl necklace into your hairdo Create a brooch bouquet from vintage brooches and jewelry to carry instead of flowers
something new
Find some cheeky lingerie to wear under your dress – it can be your little secret If you’re not the type to wear jewelry, have rings tattooed on your fingers Have a custom perfume blended just for your special day
something borrowed
Rent a designer gown instead of buying a dress you’ll only wear once Borrow your parents’ wedding song for your first dance If a married friend has a similar style to you, ask to borrow her veil
something blue
Forget a French manicure and paint your nails bold blue Wrap your bouquet with a blue handkerchief or ribbon If you’re wearing a ball gown, add a layer of blue tulle Given how the rhyme ends, why not tape a quarter to the bottom of your shoe for extra luck? Be sure to choose one minted the year you’re getting married. Afterwards, you can save it as a memento and someday lend it to a loved one as their own something borrowed.

create your own wedding website Wedding invitations traditionally include a few different cards and a whole lot of information. If you’re planning a wedding and want to cut down on the amount of paper you send, a wedding website is the perfect way to communicate with your guests. What needs to be on the invitation. All basic information about your wedding needs to be on the invitation. This includes the full names of the bride and groom to be, the location of the wedding and the date and time it’ll take place. Traditionally, your parent’s names would also be included, but if you’re paying for your own wedding, you can take or leave this tradition. Include the URL to your wedding website so people know how to access it. RSVP cards. Your guests need a way to tell you whether or not they can make it to your wedding. You can include this with your 16 I Do! Bridal Guide 2019
invitation, or have people respond on your website. Both options are acceptable, but keep in mind that some of your older guests may not understand the lack of a response card. What to put on your wedding website. Use the website to let your guests know about accommodations, the gift registry and directions to the venue. You can also include some photos of the two of you, introduce guests to your wedding party or add local fun facts for people from out of town. Building a wedding website is easy and often times free. Use one of the following host sites: withjoy.com minted.com weddingwire.com theknot.com Alternatively, you can build your wedding website using Wordpress.com; they even offer a free wedding theme.
WEDDING INVITATION ESSENTIALS Here’s a list of things you’ll need to include in your wedding invitations: The save-the-date card This optional piece to the invitation should be sent out 6-8 months before the event. It’s especially important for destination or multi-day weddings and include the following: The names of the bride and groom The date of the event The city in which the wedding will take place The invitation card The invitations should be sent out 6-8 weeks before the wedding and should contain: The date and time of the wedding The location and schedule of the reception Driving instructions The wedding’s theme, if applicable An indication of whether or not children are welcome Contact info (email address, website, phone number) The RSVP card It’s crucial to include an RSVP card with your wedding invitations so that invitees can confirm whether or not they’re able to attend the event as well as indicate if someone will be accompanying them. Be sure to provide a self-addressed stamped envelope.

These days, a wedding makes use of so much more than just a basic invitation. Invitation suites, which include the invitation, reception card, response card, directions, accommodations card and weekend itinerary, have become very popular along with save the date cards. In addition, wedding event branding pieces, such as signage, menus and napkins, have become part of the repertoire. This year, features such as geometric cutouts, color-blocking, wax seals, custom artwork and watercolors, will be found on all paper products used for weddings. Brides have turned to Pinterest and Instagram for inspiration or everything from invitations, menus and custom monograms to cakes, allowing couples to customize their wedding brand. Welcome baskets or gift boxes for guests, particularly for destination weddings or events where the majority of guests had to travel far, are being personalized with itineraries, maps, local treats and small gifts tailored to fit with the couples’ brand.

A beautiful
bouquet for every bride
A wedding bouquet is a statement of your style and unique to you. If you’re planning your wedding for 2019, check out the trends in wedding flowers this year.
big and bold
Bright, bold-colored flowers with a deep tone paired with lush greenery is one of the styles for 2019 as brides select layers of flowers. Orchids in trailing oversized bouquets with intense textures and unusual shapes will stand out.
tradition still in style
Some brides are electing to step away from the wild style of arrangements, instead turning back to more traditional bouquets with delicate ribbons and cascading greenery to accentuate traditional blooms.
unique flowers
If you’re looking for an all-white bouquet, why not consider something a little less traditional and fill your bouquet with freesia and lily of the valley rather than white roses and peonies. The change would allow you to still hold to tradition while stepping away from the mainstream stems. 18 I Do! Bridal Guide 2019
minimalist
A bouquet of just a few stems with a less extravagant arrangement might suit your style a little better. One flower to consider – carnations. While normally used to fill in around other, more dominant flowers, carnations can be found in a variety of colors and have a wonderful, but not overwhelming scent.
solo stem
Looking for an idea that really stands out? How about a single stem of your favorite bloom? Having just one flower in a field of greenery gives your floral choice a chance to really bloom.
tamed boho
Playing off boho bouquets that are wild and eclectic, this year’s version is somewhat tamer. Still filled with overflowing greenery and wildflowers, these bouquets will be slightly smaller and more controlled.
magnolias
A magnolia-only bouquet may be simple, but their big blooms and large leaves are not short on visual impact.
succulents
Found in colors from light or dark green, blue and even purple, succulents are a stunning addition to your bouquet. They also won’t leave petals in your wake as the evening progresses.
cotton
Looking for a bouquet that’s a little more rustic chic? Try adding in stems of cotton to ensure your bouquet stands out no matter what the season.
stay green
A bouquet of all greenery might fill the bill if you are searching for that untamed look. Select your favorite foliage, vines and stems to combine.
shaped for you
The perfect bouquet is one that highlights your attire without stealing the spotlight. Try a round style if you’re on the petite side, keeping it simple, delicate and short. Look at cascading styles if you’re a tall, thin bride. The long stems will highlight your waist. White is good if your dress is colorful, but not great for white or offwhite.
How to wear a
boutonniere Many grooms choose to follow the tradition of wearing a boutonniere on their wedding day. If you’re about to put a ring on your sweetheart’s finger, read on to find out how you should wear your boutonniere. First off, know that this accessory isn’t an essential part of the groom’s traditional attire and that many prefer to opt for the subtler handkerchief. If you do choose to say yes to one, here’s how to wear it: Attach it to the lapel of your suit or jacket Always pin it on your left side, above your heart Choose a delicate or magnetized fastener to avoid damaging your jacket Make it match your bride’s bouquet (this is not optional!) Match it to your wedding’s color palette WHO SHOULD WEAR IT? If the groom decides to wear a boutonniere, all male members of the wedding procession must follow suit. This means that the important men in the groom’s entourage – his father, godfather and groomsmen, for instance – should all sport the boutonniere with pride.
Non-floral
boutonnieres Traditionally at weddings, women wear corsages while the groom and other men sport floral boutonnieres. The people wearing them often include the groomsmen, the couple’s parents and grandparents and any other family members that the bride and groom want to honor. Here are some ways to put a fresh spin on the tradition.
Ornaments made of twigs: a shooting star, a heart or a simple wreath made of dried twigs would be eye-catching.
Wedding reception This year, decor is all about bold colors and unique pairings as floral arrangements for weddings mix texture, mix-and-match palettes and a return to elegance.
evolved rustic
Popular for years, rustic weddings will have a new flair as they add a little more traditional feel.
Feathers: they can be as colorful as flowers but are unexpected and whimsical.
Herbs and fruit: berries and herbs look elegant while still being fresh and green. Colorful buttons: you can make unique boutonnieres and corsages with an assortment of buttons. Wooden tees: if the bride and groom are avid golfers, tie a few colorful tees together with a bow.
floral ideas
The industrial look is very popular, but it is being combined with classic flower arrangements and lush greenery. Centerpieces will not be the towering masterpieces, but rather a lower, more graceful grouping.
bold centerstage
Brighter, bolder colors will be the backdrop for many weddings, with an emphasis on oranges, reds and jewel tones.
Large greenery arrangements will have flowers interlaced, and although fewer, blooms will be bold.
draping
Draping greenery garlands along tables as well as railings gives the reception room a striking look. Look for greens such as silver dollar eucalyptus, seeded eucalyptus, Italian ruscus, salal and Nagi greens.
making a statement
This year’s floral architecture moves away from the traditional arch and makes a move toward large floral arrangements such as flower walls or hangings. These are also a great backdrop for photos as well. Dahlias are expected to be the flower of the year, taking advantage of their wonderful jewel tones. Ranunculus and peonies will still be in style.

Beautiful
wedding cake trends
From metallic to ruffles to whiteon-white, wedding cakes for 2019 are more beautiful than ever. Here are a few of the trending designs for this year.
naked cakes
Naked Cakes are easily recognized by a barely there outer layer of frosting, which leave the interior – whatever fillings you might choose – on display. It’s especially popular for rustic or more relaxed wedding receptions.
ruffled cakes
Sugary ruffles around the exterior of your cake give it a light, airy feel that doesn’t need much extra detail. You can have it finished with fresh flowers or a few sugar flowers, either between tiers or on top, although it’s beautiful on its own.
geometric cakes
Decorating your wedding cake with geometric patterns such as squares, chevrons or stripes can give your cake a more contemporary flair. Keep your colors simple so they don’t compete with the design. 20 I Do! Bridal Guide 2019
metallic cakes
Trending toward art deco, metallic cakes are perfect for any style reception and include delicate gold embroidery and geometric shapes. If you’re looking for something a little less dramatic, opt for some fine edible glitter. This gives your cake a nice soft glow.
white-on-white cakes
Always the perfect choice, whiteon-white cakes have a classic feel all their own. But all white doesn’t have to be boring. Quilted fondant, jewel embellishments, and piped embroidery can give it an updated style.
rosette cakes
Create allover texture with sugar roses, but stick with white, ivory or a light blush color to help it retain its elegance, and maybe cover just one layer with the rosettes so that it doesn’t overwhelm you.
ombré cakes
Blending colors from yellow to orange, from red to light pink or even from ivory to white can give your cake an artistic look.
monogrammed cakes
Personalize your cake even more by having a custom monogram placed on your cake, whether in one place on a plaque or ringing your cake for a modern, geometric design.
The benefits of using
local vendors
Local vendors are a smart choice when planning your wedding ceremony and reception. Once you make the decision on where you will hold your wedding, you can begin to look at local vendors. Being familiar with the area, local vendors will be able to handle the tasks involved with the wedding without needing directions. Wedding photographers, for instance, will know the best places to stage photos, while other vendors most likely have preexisting relationships with representatives of venues, keeping your wedding day less stressful. Shopping local also ensures more personalized service, as well as more individualized attention, than you might find with larger retailers. Keeping your wedding local allows your vendors to meet with you more frequently to make sure that your wedding is the way you want it to be. It also makes dropping off deposits, attending meetings, and making fitting appointments easier.

photograhpy trends you’ll love Whether you spend two weeks or two years planning your wedding, it’ll be over in the blink of an eye. To ensure you capture the event with beautiful photographs you’ll appreciate for a lifetime, take a look at these inspiring wedding photography trends: Reportage/documentary. Couples are leaning toward more sociable and informal ways to celebrate their weddings, allowing them to focus on their guests rather than details. This photography reflects that style as these photos have a more candid and natural look than traditional shots. While your photographer will likely still cue you for some pictures, they’ll be using smaller, less obtrusive cameras to capture the little details, such as the emotions on faces, from your wedding ceremony and reception.
22 I Do! Bridal Guide 2019
Second shooters. A second photographer is becoming more common and allows for photos of both the groom and groomsmen, as well as the bride and bridesmaids to be photographed at the same time. First look photos. A father’s first glimpse of the bride in her gown, or the groom’s first reaction when he sees her have become a wedding must-have photo. Drone photography. If your wedding is taking place in a beautiful outdoor location, a drone can create awe-inspiring photos that are impossible to get from the ground. Since photography drones are basically miniature helicopters with cameras attached to them, be sure to hire an experienced and licensed operator to avoid disaster. Aerial shots can help capture the excitement of the day and can give the photographer different angles to work from.
Day-after photos. The stress of the wedding day can reduce the number of shots taken on the wedding day, so couples are adding in day-after sessions. This allows the couple to have photos in a different location and allows more time to find that perfect shot. Yes or no to social media. Couples are split over the use of social media. Some are unhappy to find their photos posted on social media before the day is over and they’ve had a chance to see them. It’s not unusual for the couple to request that no one post any pix until the day is over. On the other hand, there are couples who want to see the photos guests are taking of the wedding or the reception and have created their own hashtags for guests to upload photos to Twitter or Instagram.
How to plan a
kid-friendly
wedding
Are there children on your wedding-day guest list? If so, make sure the event is as fun for them as it is for the adults. Hire a babysitter. Employing an experienced babysitter will allow parents to fully enjoy the day themselves. A good rule of thumb is one babysitter per five children, but will vary depending on the kids’ ages. During the ceremony. Don’t seat all the kids together. Instead, ask that parents keep their children close by to ensure they stay calm and quiet. During the reception. Take care of your young guests as soon as they arrive. If the reception is taking place outside, set up bouncy castle or an obstacle course. Makeup artists, clowns and magicians are other options to keep the little ones entertained.
Get Stronger
Together
During the meal. Keep children in mind when planning your menu. They’ll prefer dishes like chicken or pasta. Also, request that they be served first – to most kids, a five-course meal is a long, boring affair. Help them stay patient by providing some toys or coloring books.
Join Together and Split the Enrollment Fee* Locally Owned and Operated
901 State Hwy 29 N Suite 140 Alexandria, MN 320-759-1887 *Each person pays 50% of full enrollment fee. Monthly membership fees also required and vary by location. Not valid with any other offer or discount. Valid at participating locations only. No cash value.
During the evening. Make sure the children have access to a quiet, comfortable spot where they can play while the adults finish their meal. You may also want to bring a few movies for the little ones to watch when it starts to get late. 001812585r1

UNIQUE wedding reception ideas If you’re getting married, but the thought of a traditional wedding reception leaves you cold, try one of these fun alternatives:
brunch reception
For early birds, a morning ceremony and brunch reception is the way to go. Ask your preferred breakfast spot to cater and then serve all of the breakfast classics with espresso drinks to wake your guests up. Just because it’s early in the day doesn’t mean you have to have a dry wedding — mimosas anyone?
backyard barbeque
If you prefer to spend your Saturday nights drinking beer and hanging out with friends, why not have a backyard wedding? Find a caterer that specializes in barbeque and get dirty with some ribs or pulled pork. Serve local craft beers and set up some old-fashioned lawn games.
cocktail party
Do you find banquets a bore but still want to dance the night away? Host a cocktail party! Your venue can pass around lots of appetizers and you can create a signature cocktail for the night. With this type of reception you can use a smaller space to accommodate your guests. 24 I Do! Bridal Guide 2019
upscale reception lounge
Create a space with comfy couches and chairs for your guests to relax between dances. Fill with soft pillows to soften the lounge area.
high-end welcome bag
Include miniature bottles of wine or champagne in your welcome bags along with maps and snacks. Or flavored coffee or tea.
unexpected guest book
Instead of a traditional guest book, have a photo jigsaw puzzle made and have your guests sign the pieces. Or set out an engraving tool and a silver tray for guests to write a special message.
confetti/petal drop
Highlight your first dance with a confetti or fresh petal drop for an extra touch. It makes an impact for your guests as well as giving your photographer a great shot.
reception escorts
Have your guests escorted to their seats by ushers rather than using table seating cards.
keepsake escort cards
Skip the paper cards that let your guests know where they’ll be seated. Instead, give them some personality. Why not try cake pops with guests names and table numbers in icing, engraved glasses, a wall filled with lollipops with names and table numbers or even an engraved flower vase.
cocktail greeting
If you’re holding your reception in the same place as the wedding, why not greet your guests with a cocktail before the ceremony? Stick with something light such as tea or mimosas as well as non-alcoholic drinks.
great guest baskets
If your ceremony is outdoors, provide some inexpensive sunglasses and sunscreen as well as bottled water for your guests as they arrive. Is your outdoor reception in the evening or on a breezy day? Try including a pashmina to keep the coolness at bay.
wedding reception
goodies to keep the party going If you’re worried about an empty dance floor at your wedding reception, why not treat your guests to wedding favors that’ll get them in a festive mood?
bubbly duo
Give your guests a bottle of sparkling wine to open during the evening and attach a jar of bubbles to complete the gift. Kids in attendance will have a ton of fun with the bubbles while the adults raise their glasses. For breathtaking photos, request that attendees blow bubbles as you start your first dance.
slippers
Put slippers at your guests’ disposal. As the evening progresses, those in high heels will be happy to have something more comfortable to wear on the dance floor.
late-night bites
Whip up a homemade treat to munch on as the evening nears its end. Lay out cookies, chocolates or assorted candies for the sweet-toothed among your guests, and prepare seasoned popcorn (try dusting it with curry, paprika or chili powder) for those who prefer a salty snack.
diy cocktails
Give each guest a personalized glass to take home. Include a miniature bottle of liquor and a note inviting them to create their own cocktail. All that’s left is a trip to the bar to find some mixers.
Traditional to
Unique
and everything in between. Trust your wedding day too!

Host a
cocktail party reception
Rather than a sit-down full scale meal, many couples are opting for a cocktail style reception. Here are a few reasons why.
more customization
There are more options to customize your reception the way you’d like. Appetizers/food stations can be set up or have the appetizers presented by circulating servers. You can serve mini variations of your favorite foods. Appetizer stations can assure that all your guests receive some of the delicious food. When servers carry trays around, they are often besieged by guests before they are barely out of the kitchen and many people may be left out.
mingle with guests
Not being seated at special tables allows the bride and groom more opportunity to mingle with their guests as well as your guests being able to mingle. Providing high top tables and lounge seating gives people a place to relax.
more celebration time
Not needing to wait for everyone to finish a sit-down meal allows everyone to begin dancing and celebrating much sooner, since cocktail receptions take much less time.
inform guests Make sure to let your guests know that this will be a cocktail reception. Finding food variety Serving smaller bites at your event out there will be no meal allows for a greater variety of foods once they attend can turn on your menu, giving your guests happy guests grouchy. the opportunity to find something perfect for their tastes.
creative decor
Being able to mix and match the decor with different styles of furniture for the lounging areas allows you to be more creative with the decor for your evening.
26 I Do! Bridal Guide 2019
venue flexibility
Since tables and chairs are not needed, couples have many more venue options and are able to fit guests into smaller areas.
back-up plan
Be prepared in case your appetizers go quickly. Pizza or other quick
snacks can be your go-to for those hungry guests.
seating options
Make sure to have a variety of seating. Younger guests may enjoy the high top tables for holding their drinks and appetizers, while older guests may prefer to sit, so don’t forget a few tables and chairs for them. Sofas and chairs set in groupings make a great place to relax.
easier on the budget
Many times, cocktail receptions can be easier on your budget than a sit-down meal since you won’t be paying for chairs, linens or centerpieces. You won’t need as many tables for a cocktail party either. Keep in mind that what you serve may impact your budget.
non-traditional start time
If you plan for a 2 p.m. reception, guests will realize that they should make sure to have lunch before attending, while a 7 p.m. start will indicate they should have dinner before arriving. If you plan your cocktail party for between 4 and 6 p.m., guests will be expecting something more to eat.
Tips for a crowd-pleasing
wedding meal Putting together a wedding menu that aims to please everyone is no easy task. Here are a few tips to maximize your chances of success.
Trust the experts. Don’t be afraid to ask your caterer for suggestions. If you’ve hired a chef, include his or her specialty dishes on the menu.
Avoid strong-tasting meat. Not everyone is a fan of lamb, game meat or fish. Poultry, on the other hand, is usually a sure bet. Provide more than one meal option if you can.
Have a plan B. If there are children, picky eaters or people with dietary restrictions among your guests, try to accommodate their preferences as much as you can. They’ll definitely appreciate the thought.
Mix it up. If you’re serving beef as a main, consider vegetarian appetizers or seafood hors-d’oeuvres. Avoid serving the same protein in more than one course.

Reasons to choose a
fall wedding
There’s a lot to love about an autum wedding – warm colors, cozy fall drinks, natural decor and crisp air. Here are some great fall wedding ideas.
Create a welcome table for your fall guests with coffee and blankets if you are holding the ceremony outdoors.
Create escort cards with colorful fall leaves instead of the standard paper.
fall colors
s’mores treats
Not just pumpkins, but many other gourds are available, along with beautiful fall leaves to help create wonderful tablescapes and decor for your wedding.
warm welcome
Beautiful autumn leaves are a great inspiration for a fall wedding. Think jewel-toned color palettes that include plums and burgundys, rusts and golds, with pastel and neutral accents. You can finish off your style with touches of metallics like copper and bronze.
How about serving s’mores around a fire – not your average reception snack!
wild bouquets
beautiful temperatures
Bouquets filled with eucalyptus and dahlias is a wild and loose design that will give your wedding and reception an extra wow factor. If you love the rustic look, try using barrels that hold those bouquets.
apple candles
Use apples as a place card holder or add a few small decorative branches act as a placecard holder.
seasonal cocktails
Fall has such wonderful flavors so why not incorporate them into a cocktail such as appletinis, apple pie moscow mules, hot toddys or cranberry margaritas. 28 I Do! Bridal Guide 2019
caramel apples
The perfect fall treat, pass out caramel apples to guests for snacking with their cocktails. Summer may be hot and winter frosty, but autumn has the perfect temperatures for an outdoor wedding.
leaves instead of rice
Have your guests toss a handful of colorful fall leaves instead of rice as you leave the wedding. It will make for a more colorful and unique photo.
who needs cake?
Skip the cake and instead create a dessert table with fall favorites such as apple, cherry, and coconut cream pies, coconut cake, and cranberrywalnut bars
foliage cards
gourds aplenty
comfort foods
Perfect for a fall wedding, tomato soup and grilled cheese shooters or mini burger sliders and beer make great snacks.
fireplace fun
You can have a cozy fireplace burning during your cocktail hour to enhance the fall ambiance.
a little bit country
Give your country-themed wedding a kick by using cowgirl boots as flower vases.
Ways to save on your
dream wedding Traditional weddings can be costly. Here are some ways to save money while still having the wedding of your dreams. Limit your guest list: only request the presence of the people that matter to you. Avoid inviting distant relatives you never see. Find a beautiful location: art galleries and botanical gardens are venue options that won’t need extra decorations. Choose a restaurant: not only will the food be better, but you’ll also have all the tables, chairs and linens you need. Only serve beer and wine: or if cocktails are your thing, create a signature drink to offer your guests. Get a deal on the dress: buy your dress at a sample sale, or consider renting or buying a used one. Minimize your florist bill: use candles as your centerpieces instead of flowers. Make your own wedding album: find a photographer that will give you all of the day’s pictures on a flash drive and use an online tool to create your own photo book.

Plan a beautiful The idea of getting married during the winter might sound rather bold, if not outright grim. But winter weddings actually have quite a few upsides. Think cozy fireplaces, mugs of hot cocoa and beautiful white snow, as well as some lower costs for planning for an off-peak wedding. Here are a few ideas to consider when you plan your big day.
winter color palette
You may think a winter wedding means using a red and green palette. Nothing could be further from the truth. Gorgeous dark emerald and plum colors, cream and berry tones, sophisticated silver and gold or classic black and white. There’s no limit to your selections.
seasonal flowers
Winter can limit your selections for floral displays, but that doesn’t mean settling for less. Why not try some brunia berries – small silver balls that make the perfect accent in a winter bouquet, or hypericum berries – oval shaped red or green berries that are festive and colorful. Pinecones, roses, succulents and manzanita branches all give your wedding florals a unique touch. 30 I Do! Bridal Guide 2019
winter wedding apparel
Faux fur wraps, long sleeves, high necklines and dramatic capes are in fashion and can give you and your wedding party a warm, but stylish look. Add in some details reminiscent of a romantic winter wedding – twinkling lights, deep hues, snow dusted landscapes – by wearing sequined gowns in flattering fishtail silhouettes or simple sheaths for your celebration. The groom and groomsmen have unlimited choices for a winter wedding. Opt for warm sweaters or cardigans in place of suit jackets, or add in sweater vests and heavy wool jackets.
romantic decor
Add fairy lights to your reception and candles to light walkways outdoors. Don’t forget to light exterior trees. You can use candles, tea lights and lanterns both indoor and outdoor to give your wedding a romantic feel. Don’t forget to plan your wedding ceremony earlier in the day or you may run out of light before it’s over.
food
We all know how wonderful a warm winter meal can be. So why
not plan for some comfort foods at your wedding? Look at warm and creamy soups such as tomato, clam chowder or seafood bisque to start and complement your menu with winter produce such as sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes or squash. Desserts can be reminiscent of the season as well with warm apple pie, gingerbread, chocolate fondue or a hot cocoa bar, complete with miniature donuts for dipping.
cake
If you opt for traditional cake, think about a dark chocolate caramel cake or red velvet. Maybe use some flavors of the season such as white chocolate or peppermint.
signature cocktails
Hot-buttered rum and white Russions make the perfect winter cocktail for guests. Or think peppermint or cranberry-laced cocktails to celebrate the season.
wedding favors
You can keep winter in mind when selecting favors for your guests as well. If you opt for a hot cocoa bar, give guests their own customized mug as a gift. Pine-scented candles, mulling spices or candy canes are all good choices.

Things to consider when planning
destination weddings
Have you long dreamed about getting married on a tropical beach or at a countryside villa in Tuscany? The size of a destination wedding can vary, from just the couple to a full wedding celebration, complete with more than one party over a long weekend. Wherever you decide to tie the knot, here are a few things to consider when planning your destination wedding.
wedding. While it may not be a problem for all of your guests, it’s important to understand that a jaunt to Europe, a week-long all-inclusive trip to the tropics or even a weekend in the next town over isn’t in everyone’s budget. People might find it hard to get time off from work and older guests may have difficulty traveling.
package deal
A smaller invitation list allows you to invite just your closest family and friends or no one at all, if that’s what you choose. You can avoid inviting those family members that no one can get along with.
Many resorts have begun to offer wedding packages that include complimentary services of an on-site wedding coordinator to take care of all the essentials – marriage license, cake, officiant – and take the stress off you. The coordinator can organize activities for your guests or arrange for spa services. If no complimentary coordinator is on site at your destination, you can hire a coordinator to take care of all the details and avoid unnecessary headaches.
not all can come

long distance complications
Long distance complications. Selecting a destination that doesn’t offer wedding services may leave you struggling through red tape to arrange wedding details long distance, especially if it is in a foreign country. Even another state may have different rules for getting a marriage license. Hiring a coordinator who specializes in destination weddings
can help you navigate the hurdles that can come with the locale.
less expensive reception
Having a smaller guest list can mean spending less money than on a traditional reception near your home. One thing to remember, though, because the reception might cost less, you still need to factor in the expenses of traveling and possibly paying for the guests’ hotel rooms, food and some other expenses. If money is a concern, look at countries that have a favorable exchange rate, or even domestic locations.
multi-day affair
Be sure to show your guests you appreciate them traveling to be with you by organizing a few group activities for them, either before or after the wedding. You can plan a welcome breakfast, for example, or an excursion to take in the local sights. Also, think about how you’ll transport wedding essentials to the destination. If you’re traveling by plane, it’s best to pack wedding attire, rings and gifts in your carry-on bag.
honeymoon:
a destination with your name on it If you want your honeymoon to be everything you’ve always dreamed of, choose your destination carefully. Whether you’re outdoor enthusiasts, insatiable foodies, hopeless romantics or something in between, there’s sure to be a little corner of paradise that suits you to a T. Here are a few ideas. Romantic. Paris is the poster child of romantic honeymoon destinations. From exploring Montmartre hand in hand, to contemplating the Seine, to immortalizing your love on the Pont des Arts, the City of Lights has infinite potential for tender moments. Venice, with its gondolas, palaces and art scene, is another option for a romantic getaway. Fall under the spell of Casanova’s hometown, where some of history’s most famous love stories were set.
Epicurean. San Sebastian in Spain is internationally renowned for its culinary scene. With one of the highest concentrations of Michelin-rated restaurants in the world, honeymooners definitely won’t run out of spots to enjoy a romantic dinner. Mexico, Vietnam, and Italy’s Amalfi Coast are also excellent choices for a flavorful honeymoon. Intimate. If your idea of a perfect honeymoon involves you, your new husband or wife, and no one else, fly away to the Maldives! Located at the center of the Indian Ocean, this republic encompasses more than 1,190 islands, most of which are uninhabited. You’re sure to find a secluded spot where you can enjoy turquoise waters and endless white sandy beaches.
BEAUTIFUL view of LAKE MINNEWASKA

Adventurous. If you’re always on the hunt for new experiences, Iceland may be just the destination for you. With its wide-open deserts, awe-inspiring volcanoes and numerous hot springs, this Nordic paradise is the perfect place to explore and relax with your better half. The Peruvian Andes, the Moroccan desert and the Japanese Alps may also have what it takes to satisfy your thirst for adventure.

Eleven steps to planning
the perfect wedding Every couple wants their wedding to be absolutely flawless. Achieving perfection, however, requires quite a bit of organizing. Here are a few things to remember when planning your big day.
4. Send out invitations. The earlier you send out your save-the-date cards and invitations, the better. Be sure to ask invitees to RSVP. This is also a good time to designate bridesmaids and groomsmen.
1. Choose the date. Make sure your closest friends and family members will be able to attend. If your sister’s pregnant or your best friend is planning a trip, choose your date strategically to avoid disappointment.
5. Draw up a floor plan. Make sure to visit the venue as many times as you need to. If you’re planning to hire a band, display a slideshow or organize a karaoke session, confirm that the location allows it.
2. Draft the guest list. Make a list of all the people you’d like to see at your wedding. But keep your budget in mind, as more people means higher costs. 3. Make your reservations. It’s a good idea to book the venues for your ceremony and reception as soon as possible, especially if you’re getting married during the summer. Popular venues are often reserved up to a year in advance.
34 I Do! Bridal Guide 2019
6. Decorate the venue. Get in touch with your florist and decorator to discuss your ideas and ask for advice. If you’re on a tight budget, consider taking care of the decorating yourself – just make sure you start early. 7. Choose an MC. Who will be the master of ceremonies for the event? Someone you know, or a hired pro? Also think about the music: band or DJ? 8. Shop for your attire. Don’t forget about makeup and hair trials,
and start shopping as early as possible so you can find all the best deals. Also think about how you’ll accessorize your outfit for the ceremony. 9. Go to the jeweler’s. Choose your wedding bands wisely – after all, you’ll be wearing them for the rest of your life! 10. Choose the menu. Is your goal to please as many people as possible or to step off the beaten path? Do you need to plan vegetarian options or kid-friendly snacks? Determine what type of meal will be served at your wedding, and don’t forget drinks and desserts. 11. Immortalize the day. Photobooths and disposable cameras are great for capturing candid memories, but you’ll probably want to have a professional wedding photographer on location as well. Lucky for you, your loved ones will be in charge of planning the bachelor and bachelorette parties. Make sure they know what you like!
