Stormy weather causes del ays Golf Tournament qualifying for Resorters rounds Page 4
Finishing at the top by inches With four finalists and a tie for first, the 2011 Resorters Golf Derby was full of pure excitement as the sun began to set Tuesday night. The Derby started with 21 participants of all ages, but it was down to four by the 4th hole. Bryant Black came out in first by only a few inches after a chipping contest against Bennett Black to
decide the winner. Bennett Black and Chris Sholts took second and third place. On the first hole of the Derby, participants threw their ball in the air and hit it with a tennis racket. Fourteen participants who comDERBY Page 2

Bruce Leland (left) was the last player to tee off in the padded orange winter jacket and black gloves on No 3, while finalist and winner, Bryant Black (above), took a swing with a miniature club on the 4th hole.

pleted the hole in six shots or less continued to the next hole where a large white tarp was awaiting them a few feet in front of the tee box. For hole No. 2, golfers could either hit around, over, through or under the tarp with any of their three clubs. Players, like Bruce Leland and Bennett Black, chose to the hit the ball around the sheet with stellar results. Golfers with a score of five or less continued on to the 3rd hole. During this hole, the seven remaining golfers wore a bright orange winter jacket, which was zipped, hooded and equipped with fluffy black gloves. Leland did not make the final cut after missing his tee shot. Sholts assured his place as a finalist after coming back from a tee shot in the trees with a long putt for five. Bryant Black, Sholts, Tyler Whiting and Bennett Black broke tradition by all four making it to the final hole where they played the entire hole – apart from putting – with a miniature club. The downhill slope of the green at the end of the hole provided a problem for Bennett Black who was putting for par, but ended up with a six after three-putting. This score tied him with Bryant Black. During the tiebreaker, Bryant and Bennett chipped with the miniature club from the top of the green of the 4th hole. Though the chips were almost identical, Bryant’s ball crept passed Bennett’s by only a few inches, securing him first place. During the Derby, participants walked beside their caddies, three clubs dangling in their hands. They putted with irons, drivers or hybrids and the majority never wore shoes. As the sun set over the golf course, the finalists took their victory joyously and prepared themselves for the competitions that lie ahead.

Stormy weather puts a damper on Resorters opening Heavy rains cause delays in qualifying The 2011 Resorters golf tournament got off to a
rough start thanks to the storms that caused havoc all over the Alexandria area Monday morning. Eighteen-hole qualifying rounds were scheduled to start Monday morning but
did not get going until 1 p.m. The Men’s Executive and Men’s Senior Divisions got things started with a shotgun start. The Women’s, Masters and Junior 13-15 Divisions were scheduled to
tee off at 4 p.m. that afternoon. All of Monday’s qualifying rounds were shortened to nine holes. Qualifying for the Men’s Regular and Junior 10-12 Divisions on Tuesday morn-
ing were delayed by an hour as well as more rain and thunder rolled through the area. The Senior Men’s championship and Junior 13-15 championship flights began match play yesterday afternoon with a late start as well. The weather also prompted a rule change, with golfers not being allowed to hit their ball out of the sand traps. The stormy weather put a kink in the photo coverage for the qualifying rounds, too, with shotgun starts making it impossible to get the individual head shots in time for this edition of the paper. The Resorters staff will be taking the remainder of those photos at the start of match play today, and all remaining championship flight qualifiers will have their photos printed in tomorrow’s edition of the Resorters newspaper.

Nathaniel Adams is 10-12 medalist Nathaniel Adams of Maple Grove earned medalist honors with a 40 to lead the way in the Junior 10-12 Division qualifying rounds. Adam’s 4-over-par round began with a par, followed by a pair of bogeys. He then parred Nos. 13 and 14 before a glitch in his game put him five strokes over par. Adams quickly rebounded to birdie No. 16, then finished his round with a pair of pars.
Adams will play Logan Dubé of Hastings in the opening round of match play. Defending champion Lincoln Johnson of Chaska will take on Ryan O’Hara of Glenview, Illinois. Alexandrian Ben Doherty will face Blake Bloedorn, also of Alexandria, in today’s match play, while Christopher Adams of Maple Grove takes on Alexandria’s Joseph Bigger.

Augustana golfer Molly Leland has been named to the 2010-11 All-American Scholar Team, the National Golf Coaches Association has announced. All honorees must have a minimum grade point average of 3.5 and excel on the course. Leland, a junior from Alexandria, carries a 3.57 GPA as a mathematics major. She owned an 82.4-stroke average in 2010-11 and logged two top-10 finishes, including sixth-place honors at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championship. Leland was also named Academic All-NSIC.
Augustana won seven tournament titles in 2010-11, including the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championship and Central Region Championship. The Vikings were ninthplace finishers at the NCAA Championship.

opening first day finish of 70, then completed the tourney with his 68s for a total 10under-par 206 and a $2,000 purse. The former Division II AllAmerican from St. Cloud State finished his final day
with six birdies on the par-72 Minneapolis Golf Club, and a total of 16 during the threeday competition. This was Swedberg’s second Minnesota Professional Major championship, having won the State Open in 2009.

Defending champ, runner-up, medalist advance in Seniors Rust? Resorters Senior Men’s defending champion Jon Empanger of Chaska showed no signs of it while breezing to an easy 8-7 win over Tim Kulow yesterday. But neither did Greg Mattson of Becker, last year’s runner-up. He also cruised to an 8-7 opening match victory. Not every golfer in the division had such an easy time of it, however. Brad Hanson had to brave overtime – and the heat – before besting Don Mehasan of Alexandria. And Brian Bloedorn had to take his match to the 18th hole to hang on to his win. After the dust settled from Tuesday’s opening round, the field of 16 survivors included seven who qualified for the Senior Men’s championship flight last year – Empanger, Mattson, this year’s medalist Jim Arnold of Plymouth, Mike Fluegel of Alexandria, Jeff Pederson, Larry Petersen of Albert Lea and Michael
Flesch of Neenah, Wisconsin. Empanger is seeking his third straight Senior Men’s title to add to his five trophies in the Resorters Executive Men’s Division. He and the 15 others who hope to stop him will tee it up today starting at 1:12 p.m. from No. 1. Here’s a look back at yesterday’s matches. Empanger def. Kulow, 8-7 The defending champ didn’t waste much time against Kulow, winning Nos. 2 and 3 with a par and a birdie to surge to an early lead. Empanger shot ahead with a birdie win on No. 5 and added another birdie on the next hole to go 4-up. He closed out the front nine with flair, winning Nos. 8 and 9 with a par and a birdie. Two more Empanger birdies on Nos. 10 and 11 ended the match early. Petersen def. Motanich, 4-2 Larry Petersen took advantage of two bogeys by Mark Motanich on the SENIOR MEN Page 19

Barge, Berry share Pro-Am title
NORTHWIOCHOEDSS SANDW
Two golf pros with a combined 12 Alexandria Pro-Am titles to their names can add one more each as Mike Barge and Don Berry kicked off the 2011 Resorters Tournament by tying for first at the Alexandria Golf Club on Sunday. Barge, last year’s champion from the Hazeltine Golf Club, and Berry of Edinburg USA both shot 69 to finish one shot ahead of Brian Riner of Dick’s Sporting Goods and Herbie Champlin of the Dallas Country Club. Berry got off to a strong start with back-to-back birdies on six and seven. He bogeyed No. 9 to go into the turn at one under. He was even better on the back, birdying Nos. 12, 15 and 16. His only blemish came on 18 with a bogey. That was enough to put Barge into a tie. He rebounded from a bogey on No. 1 to shoot one-under on the front. Barge then went two-under on the back with birdies on Nos. 11, 12 and 13 and a bogey on 16.
It marked the eighth time Berry has earned at least a share of the Resorters Pro-Am title and the sixth time for Barge. It was also the second time these two shared the title after tying back in 2001. Alexandria head pro Ron Rebrovich was not far off the pace. He shot a 71 after going into the turn at one-under. Alexandria assistant golf professional Grant Hanson shot a 76. He bounced back from a 40 on the front to shoot even par on the back. 2011 PRO-AM PRO RESULTS – Mike Barge – 35, 34, 69; Don Berry, 35, 34 – 69; Brian Riner – 35, 35, 70; Herbie Champlin – 35, 35, 70; Steve Fessler – 37, 34, 71; Ben Meyers – 35, 36, 71; Eric Chiles – 37, 34, 71; Ron Rebrovich – 35, 36, 71; Jon Hatcher – 34, 37, 71; Adam Guilli – 36, 35, 71; Chris Romberg – 38, 34, 72; Jeff Sorenson – 38, 34, 72; Eric Toftner – 35, 38, 73; Shannon O’Neil – 37, 36, 73; Barrett Boe – 37, 36, 73; Aaron Jacobson – 38, 36, 74; Matt Just – 38, 36, 74; Tony Grimes – 36, 38, 74; Bill Israelson – 40, 34, 74; Kris Kroetsch – 38, 36, 74; Tim Johnson, 36, 38, 74; Lisa Grimes 35, 39, 74; Paul Kelly – 37, 38, 75; Sam Drodofsky – 38, 37, 75; Grant Hanson – 40, 36, 76; Nick Wimer – 37, 40, 77; Jeff Drimel – 40, 38, 78; Greg McCullough – 39, 39, 78; Jeff Olson – 41, 37, 78; Aaron McClay – 40, 38, 78; Nick Anderson - NC

Top seed upended Hunter Bruhn knocks off No. 1 The Junior 13-15 Division kicked off with a major upset as 16-seeded Hunter Bruhn of Buffalo was at his best in a 5-3 win over top-seeded Brent Haukom of Marshall. The high seeds advanced in five of the other seven matches on Tuesday as the Juniors get set to decide who will play in the semifinals on Friday when they tee off from the 10th tee at 8:39 this morning. Bruhn def. Haukom, 5-3 Bruhn was on his game from the get-go as he went par, par, birdie on his first three holes to go 3-up after starting on the back. He never cooled down as he highlighted his back nine with a birdie on the
par-3 17th. Bruhn came over to the front after shooting a 36 and continued to play steady golf. He parred Nos. 1 and 2 to move back to 3-up before taking Nos. 4 and 6 to end things early. The win for Bruhn came a day after he had shot a 45 in some tough conditions in his qualifying round. Haugen def. Franklin, 2-1 A birdie on the par-3 7th for Cole Haugen of Alexandria proved to be too much for Maple Grove’s Sam Franklin to overcome as Haugen earned the right to take on Bruhn in the quarterfinals today. Haugen was 3-up after parring Nos. 17 and 18 before making the turn to the front. Franklin never went away as he did the same with two par wins on

Defending champ George Mikesh of Scottsdale, Arizona is back, as is six-time champion Ron Clayton of Sarasota, Florida, who had the best qualifying score for the day at 36.
Clayton also owns a pair of Senior Division crowns. George Cliff of Mankato will be among those that qualified as well. Cliff is a four-time Senior Division champion. Alexandrians Tom Eidsvold, Jack Mathiansen and Loren Berg make up the local qualifiers.

Red Wing’s Giorgi beats heat, win for 68 medalist round A sizzling start on the back nine – including an eagle – lifted Mark Giorgi of Red Wing to medalist honors in the Resorters Men’s Championship Division. The 20-year-old Giorgi rose above the heat and wind, coolly drilling six birdies en route to a round of 68. His score was one off the pace of last year’s medalist score, a 67 carded by Alexandria’s Tyler Whiting. Giorgi’s first nine was a middle-of-theroad 38 but he caught fire after crossing the road with birdie, birdie, eagle, birdie and
birdie on the next five holes. A bogey on No. 15 slowed his pace but he closed out the round in steady fashion with two straight pars and a birdie for a round of 3830-68. That’s two strokes better than Giorgi’s qualifying round of 70 in last year’s Resorters. (Giorgi went on to lose 6-5 in his opening match to a red-hot Bennett Black.) Giorgi is hoping the medalist momentum will roll further than it did last year when Whiting was eliminated in the opening round by Brian Robley.

Men’s Division boasts two former champs, three Junior Division titlists Are you ready for some match play? The field of 32 hopefuls who made this year’s cut – a qualifying round of 76 or better – sure are. Although the division includes just two former champions – last year’s titlist Don Constable of Deephaven and 2008 champ Tyler Whiting of Alexandria – it’s still packed with potential. In addition to Constable, three golfers who advanced to last year’s quarterfinals are back for another go at it – Thomas Strandemo of Fargo, Geoff Klein of Mankato and former Alexandrian Jack Dressen of Edina (who won the Junior Division in 2004). Besides Dressen, two other Junior Division champs are hoping to add a Men’s Division title to their trophy case – Sean Halverson of Baxter (2007) and
Joey Shroyer of Victoria (2008). Several other tough competitors who have advanced deep into the tournament before include Eric Peterson of Benson (1993’s runner-up), Gordy Diekman of Alexandria, Chris Sholts of Alexandria, Ben Vangsness of Alexandria, Tyler Monda of Brainerd, Derek Swedberg of Alexandria, Alec Heinen of Edmond, Oklahoma and Paul Webskowski of Plymouth. The Black brothers, Bryant and Bennett of Alexandria, are also back in the hunt. The bar was set pretty high in qualifying. The cut, a round of 76, was one stroke off last year’s blistering mark of 75 but two strokes better than 2009’s pace of 78. All in all, the 2011 Resorters Men’s Division has a lot to cheer for – an exciting mix of young and veteran players, local

favorites, long shots and players looking for a chance at redemption. It all starts today at noon from No. 1.
CHIP SHOTS Tom Morris, Jr., in the 1868 Open Championship at Prestwick, made the first recorded hole in one. The oldest person in the world to ace was Otto Bucher. He was 99 when he scored a hole in one in 1985. And two 6-year-olds – Tommy Moore (1968) and Brittny Andreas (1991) – beat the odds, too.
Chances of making a hole in one if you’re not a pro: 1:12,600. No one knows why the warning shout of “fore!” is used all over the world, but it is known that the first person to shout it was a caddie named Herd, in 1854. One speculation is that it’s a shortened version of “beware before!” – which is shouted by the British army
artillery as a warning to the infantry in front of them. The infantry would lie down to let the cannonballs pass over their heads. Golfers are thus warned by fellow players that ducking might be a good idea. The human traffic is so heavy on the Fukuoka Golf Course in Japan that stopand-go lights have been placed at three holes.
The Nyanza Club in British East Africa (1950) allowed a player another ball, without penalty, if the first landed too near a crocodile or a hippopotamus. The wooden tee was invented in 1920 by Dr. William Lowell, a Boston dentist and golfer. Dr. Lowell wanted to protect his hands from becoming scratched. Golfers previous-
ly would make a small pile of sand or dirt for the ball. Near the end of a particularly trying round of golf, during which the golfer had hit numerous fat shots, he said in frustration to his caddy, “I’d move heaven and earth to break a hundred on this course.” “Try heaven,” said the caddy. “You’ve already moved most of the earth.”

first two holes to quickly go 2-up. Petersen padded the lead with a nifty birdie on No. 5 but Motanich rallied with a bogey win on No. 7 to cut the lead back to two. Petersen won the next hole with a par but lost the momentum when Motanich won No. 9 with par and No. 10 with birdie. With a slim 1-up lead going into the long No. 12, Petersen made his move, winning the hole with par and adding a birdie win on No. 14. Both golfers could only manage bogeys on No. 15 before Petersen iced the match with a par on the 16th hole. Hartmann def. Johnson, 3-1 It was one of the biggest turnarounds of the day. Trailing by three going into No. 12, Mike Hartmann pulled off a stunning comeback, winning the next six holes to defeat Randy Johnson of Marshall, 3-1. Hartmann’s amazing string had a rhythm to it: par, par, birdie, par, par, birdie. A different song was playing on the front nine. Johnson won four holes, Nos. 1 (birdie), 4 (par), 7 (birdie) and 9 (par) while Hartmann won just two holes – back-to-back wins on Nos. 5 and 6. After Johnson took No. 10 with a par, he appeared to be singing the right tune but Hartmann quickly changed the station to advance into today’s second round. Mattson def. Johnson, 8-7 Greg Mattson played nearly mistake-free golf against Darryl Johnson of Alexandria and it paid off with a big win. Mattson won six holes on the front nine with solid pars on Nos. 1, 3, 5, 7, 8 and 9. He kept the pressure on from there, winning No. 10 and 11 with
two more pars to escape the heat with a cool 8-7 victory. Bodelson def. Chesley, 3-1 Scott Bodelson of Burnsville jumped out to a big lead, faltered a bit in the middle of his match, but held on to defeat Robert Chesley of Mankato, 3-1. Bodelson won the first three holes with pars and took a commanding 4up lead with another par on No. 5. Chesley whittled away at the lead with wins on No. 7 (par) and No. 8 (birdie), but trailed by two at the turn. After halving the first four holes on the back nine, Chesley broke the ice with a par win on No. 14 to edge within one. Bodelson, however, hung tough. He won the next hole with a bogey, matched Chesley’s par on No. 16 and closed the match with a nice birdie on the short 17th hole. Feriancek def. Falls 4-2 Alexandria’s Rick Feriancek outlasted Bob Falls of Edina in a hardfought 4-2 battle. Feriancek won four holes on the front – Nos. 3, 5, 8 and 9 while Falls carded two wins – Nos. 1 and 7. Leading by two, Feriancek made a clutch par on No. 10 to go 3-up. Falls tried to battle back but could only match Feriancek stroke-forstroke on the next five holes. The match finally ended with Feriancek’s birdie on No. 16. Battey def. Zinn, 4-2 Judge Dave Battey of Alexandria fended off a last-minute rally from Byron Zinn of Spicewood, Texas for a 4-2 verdict. Battey dominated the front nine, winning six holes to Zinn’s one. A highlight was Battey’s eagle on No. 6. Battey padded his lead to 6-up with a birdie on No. 11, but Zinn staged a comeback, winning Nos. 13, 14 and 15 with par, par birdie to pull within
three. Battey closed the contest with a solid par win on No. 16. Hanson def. Mehesan, 19 holes Never give up. That was Brad Hanson’s mantra against Don Mehesan of Alexandria. Hanson never led in the match until the 19th hole. It was a closely fought battle from the get-go. Mehesan won the first hole with par, added another par win on No. 3, but lost No. 5 to Hanson’s par. Mehesan made a move on No. 7, a par to put him 2-up – a lead he held until the 10th hole when Hanson’s par pulled him to within one again. Mehesan answered with a par win on No. 11, but the seesaw match continued when Hanson won the next hole with par and finally evened the score with a par win on No. 13. Mehesan quickly broke the tie with a birdie on the next hole and held his slim lead going into No. 18. That’s when Hanson evened the match again with a par to force an extra hole – and complete his comeback. Arnold def. Kowalczyk, 3-1 Through the first nine holes, Jim Arnold of Plymouth and Larry Kowalczyk barely blinked. Arnold won No. 3 with birdie and Kowalczyk won No. 9 with par. Otherwise, it was even-Steven golf. The back nine told a different story. After Kowalczyk won No. 11 with par, Arnold caught fire, winning Nos. 12, 13 and 14 with a pair of birdies and a par to go back on top, 2up. They halved the next two holes before Arnold drilled another birdie on the short 17th hole to wrap up the win. Freeman def. Southland, 7-5
19
Bill Freeman started his match against Tom Southland with a bogey. It was just about his only miscue of the day. Freeman took control of the match early after dropping that first hole. He won Nos. 2, 3 and 4 with par, par, birdie and closed out the front nine with a trio of wins, all pars, to go 5-up at the turn. Freeman kept the pressure on with a birdie on No. 10. Southland managed a par win on No. 11, but it was too little, too late. Freeman iced the match with birdies on Nos. 12 and 13 for an easy 7-5 victory. Bloedorn def. Lodge, 1-up Three crucial birdies on the back nine propelled Brian Bloedorn to a 1up nail-biter against Dave Lodge of Champlin. Lodge prevailed on the front nine, winning four holes to Bloedorn’s two. Bloedorn refused to surrender, however, and came back with a birdie on No. 10 to draw within one. Both golfers matched each other’s pars on the next five holes. Trailing by one going into No. 16, Bloedorn knew he had to make a move soon and he did, delivering back-to-back birdies to steal the lead. The match ended on the 18th green with pars. Flesch def. Seashore, 4-2 Another hard-fought match in the Senior Men’s Division saw Michael Flesch slip past Gene Seashore, 4-2. Flesch won three holes on the front nine, Nos. 1, 6 and 7, while Seashore settled for two wins, Nos. 2 and 9. After swapping bogeys on Nos. 10 and 11, Flesch won the par-5 12th with a key par. Seashore could only match Flesch’s bogey and par on the next SENIOR MEN Page 22

Nos. 1 and 2 to inch back within one. He then answered a par win for Haugen on the 4th with a bogey win of his own on the 5th. The two halved No. 6 before Haugen put together his biggest hole of the day on 7. His birdie on the hole meant Franklin needed to take the next two to force a playoff. It didn’t happen as both players bogeyed No. 8 to secure the win for Haugen. Adams def. Brundell, 1-up It took all 18 holes but Maple Grove’s Nick Adams got the job done by outlasting Alexandria’s Devin Brundell on Tuesday. Adams survived a birdie win for Brundell on No. 7 as he hung on to a 1-up lead over the final two holes. Both players double bogeyed 8th before pars on the 9th gave Adams the win. The close outcome was a fitting ending to a back-and-forth affair. Adams held a two-hole lead after their first two on the back. Brundell rebounded from triple bogey on 11 to take Nos. 12, 14 and 17 with par wins. That gave him a 1-up lead heading into the front. Adams made his charge over the first five holes. He took No. 2 with a par and the 4th with a bogey to regain the lead. His par win on 5 then proved to be enough as he held on down the stretch. Mathews def. Amundson, 5-4 Alexandria’s Natalie Amundson proved she could hang with the guys by qualifying for the championship flight but saw her run come to an end on Tuesday in a 5-4 loss to Edmond, Oklahoma’s Cole Mathews. Mathews jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in this one. A birdie on 11 got him going as he took three straight holes. Amundson got par wins on Nos. 15 and 18 that were sandwiched around a par win for Mathews on the 16th. He put things away after making the turn. Mathews backed up a bogey win on the 1st with par wins on Nos. 2 and 3 to go 5-up. He would never give any of that back as he lived to fight another day. Heinen def. Maher, 7-5 Former Junior Division champion, Nick
Heinen of Edmond, Oklahoma, got his tournament off to a solid start as the No. 2 seed took care of Alec Maher of Hutchinson, 7-5. Heinen never lost a hole as he remained steady throughout the afternoon. He got birdie wins on Nos. 11 and 12 to start the day and took 16 and 17 with pars to go into the turn 4-up. Heinen continued to apply the pressure on the front. He birdied the 1st before parring No. 3 to move to 6-up. He ended his day in style, birdying No. 4 to secure his spot in the quarters. Buysse def. Johnson, 3-2 Alex Buysse of Marshall came back from an early deficit to outlast Alexandria’s Aaron Johnson after a big charge on the front. Johnson won holes 11 and 12 and was 1-up heading into the turn. That was when Buysse began to make his move. A par win at No. 2 evened things up before Buysse birdied the 4th to take his first lead. He followed that with par wins on the 5th and 6th. Johnson took the 7th with a bogey win, but Buysse secured the win with a par win on the 8th. Kranz def. Bigger, 19-holes Carter Kranz will always remember the way his 2011 Resorters Tournament got started after storming back for a win in 19 holes over Alexandria’s Lukas Bigger. The Sauk Centre golfer found himself down three with three to go on Tuesday against the third-seeded Bigger. That only added to the drama as par wins on Nos. 7, 8 and 9 forced a playoff. He carried that momentum into the extra hole as he kept his hopes alive. His win on the 19th hole marked the first time Kranz had led all day. Bigger started with wins on Nos. 10 and 12 and added a win on 17 as he led by one heading into the turn. He added to that cushion with par wins on Nos. 1 and 2 before the two each took one over the next two holes. Kranz stayed alive by pushing on Nos. 5 and 6 before mounting his comeback. Swedberg def. Hennessy, 5-4 Ryan Swedberg of Monterey, California used strong runs on the back and the front to secure a 5-4 win over Dan Hennessy of Alexandria. Swedberg trailed by one after No. 10 but got
wins on Nos. 12, 13 and 14 to take a lead he would never relinquish. Hennessy got wins on Nos. 16 and 17 but could not survive a slow start to the front nine. Swedberg took advantage of an opportunity on the first three holes. He got par wins on all three of them as Hennessy opened the door with three straight bogeys on the front. Swedberg then added a bogey win on the 5th to put the match away. JUNIOR 13-15 CHAMPIONSHIP FLIGHT TUESDAY RESULTS – Bruhn def. Haukom, 5-3; Haugen def. Franklin, 2-1; Adams def. Carter Kranz of Sauk Centre chipped from behind the 11th green yesterday during his opening round match in the championship flight of the Junior 13-15 Division against Alexandria’s Lukas Bigger. Kranz eked out a win in 19 holes. In other Junior 13-15 Division action, Natalie Amundson (left) of Alexandria mulled over her strategy for a dicey chip shot onto the 11th green. Amundson dropped her opening round match, 5-4, to Cole Matthews of Edmond, Oklahoma.

SENIOR MEN
from
two holes before Flesch wrapped up the win with wins on Nos. 15 and 16. Tessmer def. Syverson, 3-2 It was a classic stalemate. After Steve Tessmer of Hood River, Oregon won the first hole with a birdie, his match against Alexandria’s Gary Syverson couldn’t have been any closer over the next eight holes. They matched each other stroke for stroke. Then, on No. 10, Tessmer’s par broke the spell, giving him a 2-up lead. He moved to 3-up on the next hole with another par but Syverson sliced it back to two with a birdie win on No. 12. The suddenly seesawing match continued with Tessmer winning Nos. 13 and 14 with pars and Syverson claiming No. 15 with par to draw within three. The match ended on No. 16 with both golfers making par. Fluegel def. Rolfzen, 4-2 Early leads had a way of vanishing in yesterday’s heat. Ask Gary Rolfzen of St. Cloud. He won Nos. 1 and 3 with birdie, par to go 2-up, but Alexandria’s Mike Fluegel answered with a par win on No. 4. Rolfzen got his lead back to two with a birdie win on No. 6 but Fluegel ended the front nine in style, winning
Page 19 Nos. 7 (birdie) and 9 (par) to tie the match. Fluegel took his first lead of the day with a par on No. 11 only to lose it on the next hole to Rolfzen’s par. After that, Fluegel took command, winning the next three holes and halving Rolfzen’s par on No. 16 to clinch a 4-2 win. Prochnow def. Lende, 5-4 It just wasn’t Roy Lende’s day. He had one highlight – a par win on No. 3, but other than that, Dan Prochnow of Colorado Springs, Colorado made quick work of the match. Prochnow struck for four consecutive wins on Nos. 47, highlighted by a birdie on No. 6, and won No. 9 with par to take a comfortable 4-up lead at the turn. After halving the next three holes, Prochnow won No. 13 with par and ended the match a hole later by matching Lende’s par. Pederson def. Vipond, 5-4 Jeff Pederson played a steady round of par golf to defeat Tom Vipond of Woodstock, Georgia. He made just one mistake – a bogey on No. 6, which Vipond seized as his only win of the match. Otherwise, Pederson’s pars on six holes, Nos. 1, 4, 5, 8, 12 and 14 were good enough to win. He advanced into the second round a 5-4 victory.
