Donald Constabl e defend 2010 Men returns to ’s Division championship
Five of seven 2010 champions returning Tournament action begins Wednesday All but two of last year’s champions will be back to defend their 2010 Resorters Golf Tournament titles as the 90th annual event gets under way Sunday, July 31 at the Alexandria Golf Club. MEN’ S DIVISION With a most impressive resume, Donald Constable of Deephaven will return for another Men’s Division championship run. Constable, who most recently won the 108th MGA Amateur Championship on July 20 at the White Bear Yacht Club, was a senior golfer for the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers, tying for 42nd at the NCAA West Regional tournament this spring. He was named to the PING All-Region team by the Golf Coaches Association of America and was a second team All-Big Ten performer, having posted five top-10 and 10 top-20 finishes in 12 tournaments. He was also the 2010 MGA Player’s champion. Last year, Constable defeated Jim Lehman Jr. of Plymouth 6-4. Lehman, the 2009 champ and 2010 qualifying medalist, is not in the field this year. But Constable is not the only player with an impressive pedigree. Former Alexandrian, now from Edina, Jack

The 2010 Resorters Golf Tournament champions were (left to right) Donald Constable, Men’s Division; Jon Freeman, Executive Men’s Division; Jon Empanger, Senior Men’s Division; Lincoln Johnson, Junior 10-12 Division; Matthew Bennett, Junior 13-15 Division; Sarah Roering, Women’s Division; and George Mikesh, Masters Division. Dressen was the 2004 Junior Division champ, and has since gone on to play for the Creighton University Bluejays golf team, where he just finished his junior season. Dressen is CU’s first golfer named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team since 2008. He averaged 79.3 strokes per round, including two of par or better, with a low of 71. He played in 11 of 12 events and 28 rounds overall, including three top-20 finishes. He was 41st in the recently
completed MVC Championships. Rochester’s Greg Peterson owns the 2001 Resorters Men’s Division championship and is among the field vying for a crown. Along with Peterson, Jerry Rose of Sarasota, Florida will be competing in the Men’s Division. He has titles from 1979, 1983 and 2000, while Eagan golfer Tyler Whiting, formerly of Alexandria, was the 2008 champion.

Constable is Men’s champ

Donald Constable is back to defend his 2010 Men’s Division championship.
Donald Constable of Deephaven played nearperfect golf at the Alexandria Golf Club last year to win his first-ever Resorters championship. The high heat and humidity didn’t wilt his game a bit. The 21-year-old senior at the University of Minnesota knocked off a tough defending champion, former Alexandrian Jim Lehman Jr. of Plymouth, in the final match with a crisp 6-4 victory. “It was a lot of fun,” said Constable on getting his first Resorters trophy after mowing through four opponents, Collin Lervick of Chanhassen (3-2), Derrick Whiting of Littleton, Colorado (43), Dominic Todora of Woodbury (5-4) and then Lehman. “I knew Jim would be a formidable opponent so I had to play well,” Constable said. And that he did – notching six birdies and an eagle in the final match to finish 7under par after 14 holes. Lehman, who advanced into the finals with a 5-4 win
over former Alexandrian Jack Dressen of Edina, didn’t play all that badly – he muffed only one hole, a bogey on No. 5 – but he just couldn’t gain any ground. “I was even par for the day but I didn’t hit many great shots,” Lehman said. “I got beat by arguably the best player in Minnesota right now.” Constable finished second in the Minnesota State Amateur Tournament the previous month, won the 2010 North and South Amateur Championship and missed qualifying for last year’s U.S. Open at Pebble Beach by just one stroke. Despite the loss, Lehman said he was “very pleased” with his week. He noted that he’s advanced to the final match of a major match play tournament for eight years in a row now – six at the Northland Invitational in Duluth and two at the Resorters – and is 44 at winning it all. The ConstableLehman match was very close at the beginning. Both golfers parred the first two
holes before Constable drew first blood with a birdie win on No. 3. Lehman tied it on the next hole with a nice birdie putt but Constable moved ahead on No. 5 when Lehman missed a short but tricky par putt. Constable knocked a long, breaking eagle putt on No. 6 to within about four feet of the cup and then drained the birdie to go 2-up. Lehman’s drive on No. 7 hit a tree and bounced near a bunker but he was able to get up and down for par to halve the hole. Both golfers were on the green in two on No. 8 but Constable’s was close enough for a gimme birdie while Lehman ended up missing a tough pin-high putt to fall behind by three. Lehman took No. 9 with par when Constable missed a 12footer, putting the defending champ down by two at the turn. Any hopes of a Lehman comeback melted away when Constable struck for a pair of birdies on Nos. MEN Page 7

Page 1 Scottsdale, Arizona. Mikesh defeated Alexandria’s Tom Eidsvold 1up in a marathon 20-hole battle last year for the crown. Clayton owns six consecutive Masters titles spanning 2004-2009, along with a pair of Senior titles from 1994 and 2000. But Clayton is not the only veteran champion that Mikesh will have to worry about in 2011 as Mankato’s George Cliff and Alexandria’s Dave Harris are both in the field. Cliff sports four titles, having won the Senior Division in 2001, 2002, 2005 and 2007, with Harris claiming a pair from 1998 and 2006. Also in the field is last year’s qualifying medalist, Clayton Pike of Billings, Montana. WOMEN’ S DIVISION Defending champion Sarah Roering of Glenwood will not be among those vying for a 2011 crown, but three past champions will, including last year’s runner-up, Maggie Leland of Alexandria. Leland, the 2007 and 2009 champion and 2010 qualifying medalist, fell to Roering last year 4-3 in her bid for a second straight title. But, instead of battling Roering this season, Leland will need to face St. Louis Park’s Betsy Aldrich, who owns titles from 2003 and 2008, and Goodyear, Arizona’s Connie Sornsin, the 2002 and 2004 title winner. But Leland is a force to be
EXECUTIVE MEN’ S DIVISION A pair of champion brothers will be competing once again for the Executive Men’s title as defending champion Jon Freeman of Chanhassen returns to the Resorters. Freeman defeated Dave Dilley of Alexandria last year in a 6-5 contest to claim the crown. Stefan Freeman of St. Cloud was the 2009 champion, and defeated his brother that season 19-up in the division battle. Also in the field will be former Men’s Division winner, Pete Passolt of Orono, who won his crown in 1989. Todd Wagner of Austin, Texas, who was the top scoregetter in last year’s qualifier, is also in the field. SENIOR MEN’ S DIVISION Jon Empanger of Chaska defeated Greg Mattson of Becker, 1-up in last year’s Senior Men’s Division and returns as the only past champion in the field. Empanger has won seven trophies at the Resorters, including Executive Division wins in 1993, 1997, 2004, 2007 and 2008, and Senior titles in 2009 and 2010. He was also last year’s qualifying medalist. MASTERS DIVISION He’s back! Eight time Resorters Golf Tournament champion Ron Clayton of Sarasota, Florida returns to the tourney after a year’s hiatus to challenge the defending champ, George Mikesh of
reckoned with. She finished second in the 2010 Minnesota Women’s State Amateur Championship, and was named the Minnesota Golf Association’s junior player of the year. As a freshman last season at Augustana College, she was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate (NSIC) player of the week twice. She also earned AllAmerican honorable mention and was named the NSIC Newcomer of the Year as well as being named to the AllNSIC first team and all tournament team after leading her team to the Central Region golf championship. Not a bad resume. JUNIORS 13-15 Matthew Bennett of Marshall defeated Tommy Brandabur of Minnetrista 5-4. Neither are back, leaving the field wide open. Nick Heinen of Edmond, Oklahoma is back and will be looking to regain the crown he won in 2009. Heinen was last year’s medalist as well as medalist from 2009. JUNIORS 10-12 Lincoln Johnson of Chaska defeated Sam Franklin of Maple Grove, 2-up in the Juniors 10-12 Division and is back for another try. Sam Franklin, who was last year’s medalist from the qualifying rounds, has moved up into the Juniors 13-15 Division.

Because his family had a lake home on Lake Darling, Jon Freeman of Chanhassen spent the summers of his youth growing up in Alexandria. And that meant spending a lot of time on the Alexandria Golf Course. All that experience paid off in last year’s Resorters Golf Tournament when the 47-year-old finance director won his first Resorters title – the 2010 Executive Men’s Championship. Freeman knocked off Alexandria’s Dave Dilley 6-5, avenging his 19-hole loss in the division final the previous year to his brother, Stefan Freeman of St. Cloud. “I played solid,” said Freeman after his big win. “I didn’t give him [Dilley] much room.” Freeman, who earlier that morning defeated Steve Tax of Sartell 5-4 in the semifinals, jumped out to an early lead against Dilley, winning two of the first three holes. Going into No. 7, Freeman was 3up. He appeared in danger of losing the “Minnesota Green” when his drive ended up on the cart path, but after a free drop, he made a nifty chip onto the green to save par, halve the hole and remain 3-up. Dilley came close to slicing into the lead on the next hole when he just missed a birdie putt and had to settle for a gimme par. On No. 9, Dilley’s tricky downhill putt rolled way beyond the cup and he dropped four back. Freeman kept his hot streak going with another win on No. 10 to go 5up. After halving No. 11, Freeman

Empanger is Senior Men’s crown winner Hoisting a trophy at the end of Resorters week has become more than routine for Chaska’s Jon Empanger – it’s become expected. Like he has six times in the past, Empanger delivered again in 2010 with his second straight Senior Division championship. It’s the fourth straight Resorters title for the Island View Golf Club member after taking Executive Division championships in 2007 and 2008. His win over Becker’s Greg Mattson in last year’s Senior final did not come easy. It took all 18 holes to decide it as the two went into the 18th all even before Empanger scored a par victory to wrap up the match. That put the finishing touches on what was a back-and-forth round. Neither player led by more than one hole throughout the day. Empanger struck first with a par win on No. 4. Mattson answered right back with a par and a birdie on Nos. 5 and 6 to take a 1-up lead. It’s a lead that lasted until the 9th. Empanger made the turn with a par win in his back pocket to even things up. The drama only intensified once they hit the back nine. The two players had an answer for every hole the other took. Mattson struck first with a win on 11 before a birdie on 12 for Empanger evened things up again.
Two holes later, Empanger struck with another birdie win only to be followed with a Mattson birdie on the 15th. Empanger proved to be a little steadier down the stretch. He took another lead with a par on the 16th, but Mattson wasn’t finished. His birdie on the par 3, 17th set up an intense 18th hole. Empanger knows how to close out titles in this tournament, though. He did it again when he made par after Mattson opened the door with a bogey. Another year, another title for the perennial champ. SENIOR MEN’S DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP Jon Empanger def. Scottsdale’s Mikesh claims Masters Division honors The Masters’ Division has a new champion after six years. The former champ, Ron Clayton of Sarasota, Florida, was not among the entries in last year’s Resorters Golf Tournament due to a scheduling conflict, which left the door open for any comers. George Mikesh of Scottsdale, Arizona claimed the prize, edging out Alexandria’s own Tom Eidsvold 1-up in a marathon
20-hole battle. Neither golfer had ever won the title before, and both were hungry for the crown. Eidsvold was the first to gain ground in this contest, winning the second hole on a par after the pair shared the opener. Mikesh, however, rebounded quickly to win Nos. 3 and 4, with the second win coming on his first of two birdies for the match.
Eidsvold balanced the match on No. 6 as he countered with a birdie of his own, then won 7 and 8 on pars to go 2-up. The Scottsdale golfer cut the lead to one as he parred No. 6 and the two halved No. 10 on the back nine before Eidsvold won 11 on a par, pushing his lead to 2-up. Again Mikesh rallied, cutting the lead to one as he won No. 14 on a par, but Eidsvold continued to push, staking claim to the 15th
hole on a par. But Mikesh evened the match with a birdie and a par on the ensuing holes, and after both golfers notched pars on the 18th, the match went into extra play. Heading back onto the front nine, both golfers shot an even par to stay tied after No. 1, but Mikesh closed the match out on No. 2 as his opponent bogeyed the hole, leaving him with a 1-up win in 20 holes.

Copies will be located at various places around the club and as usual are free of charge. It will be greatly appreciated if all championship flight players

will fill out their cards during the tournament and match play. We know this takes some extra time but it is easier to write stories and conduct interviews following the matches. If you know of something exciting or newsworthy that happens during the tournament in any of the flights that we may not be aware of and may not get much publicity, please pass it along. We want to make this as successful as possible and wish all the participants in the 2011 tournament the best of luck.

Roering claims Women’s crown It was a much anticipated event as the Women’s Division championship in the Resorters Golf Tournament last year featured a pair of local golfers vying for the title – defending champion Maggie Leland of Alexandria and first-time player Sarah Roering of Glenwood. The two golfers have been friends and competitors. Leland’s only loss of her senior year came at the hands of Roering on May 20, 2010 in St. Cloud. She rebounded the next day to beat Roering at the Red Wing Invitational when she set a new tournament record at 2-under-par 69. Both players are state champions – Leland in Class AAA and Roering in Class AA – and both players compete on teams that are consistently ranked in the state polls. In other words, they are exceptional players. All that added up to a very interesting championship match. It proved to be Roering’s year as she unseated the defending champ 43 at the Alexandria Golf Club, using her play on the front nine to gain the advantage, while Leland struggled with her short approach shots through most of the day. Both players felt out the course by halving the first hole, with Roering just missing a birdie as her putt rimmed out of the cup. The first move went to the Glenwood golfer who then birdied the second hole as she sank a fivefoot putt. It looked as if Leland would even the match as Roering found her second shot landing in the trap on No. 3. She blasted out of the bunker and her ball hit the flag stick on the fly, bouncing into the rough. Leland, who now plays at Augustana College, sank her putt
and notched a par, but Roering then sank her chip shot, again hitting the flag, and this time dropping the ball into the cup to save par. A three-putt on No. 4 gave Leland a nice par win to even the match as her opponent bogeyed the hole. The Colorado State University golfer then picked up three straight wins to close out the front nine. On No. 6, Roering recovered from an errant tee shot to birdie the hole and go up one. The next two holes saw Leland struggle with her putting, including a three-putt on No. 7 after a stellar tee shot onto the green, leaving Roering up three at the turn. The two players halved the first three holes of play on the back nine with pars before Leland bogeyed No. 13. Roering edged her out on that hole after reaching the green on her tee shot and putting out for a par to put her 4-up with five holes remaining. From there, the players shared Nos. 14 and 15, ending the match at 43 and giving Roering the title. WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP FLIGHT OPENING ROUND Maggie Leland def. Jenna Westerham 7-5 Molly Noser def. Annual Pro-Am is Sunday at 2 p.m. Veteran golf pro Mike Barge of the Hazeltine National Golf Club is back to defend last year’s Pro-Am crown as the 22nd competition once again kicks off action for the annual Resorters Golf Tournament. Barge has five titles to his name, but isn’t alone in holding multiple honors, as Don Berry of Edinburgh USA is also on the competitors’ list and is the owner of seven Pro-Am titles at the Alexandria Golf Club. Bill Israelson of the Vintage Golf Club is in the field as well and sports three titles, while Ben Meyers of the Medina Golf and Country Club, Jeff Sorenson of the Columbia Golf and Learning Center and Lisa Grimes of the Geneva Golf Club have one each. For the first 16 years of the ProAm, it served as the kickoff for the annual Resorters Golf Tournament, but moved away from that event in 2004, playing on a different weekend. But for its 21st season in 2009, the Pro-Am returned to the Resorters Golf Tournament to kick off a week of exceptional golf in Alexandria. The Pro-Am is sponsored again
this year by Sprint All-State Wireless. Other sponsors include the Echo Press newspaper and State Bank and Trust. Bennett claims 2010 13-15s championship It was quite a week for Marshall’s Matthew Bennett in the 2010 Junior 13-15 Division championship flight. The Marshall Golf Club member was the last one to make the cut after shooting an 82 in qualifying. Four rounds later, he left Alexandria as a Resorters champion. Bennett’s run through match play started with a win over defending champion Nick Heinen of Edmond, Oklahoma and ended with a 5-4 win over medalist Tommy Brandabur of Minnetrista. Bennett took control from the getgo and never looked back in the win. He was in complete control after a birdie on No. 8 put him 1-under par through his first eight holes and 5-up on the scorecard. Pars on Nos. 1, 2, 4 and 7 gave him four wins and an early cushion to work with. Brandabur tried to make a run. He took two straight holes with a par and a birdie on Nos. 9 and 10. It was just too late at that point. Brandabur struggled to make par on a consistent basis. That opened the door for Bennett, who earned par wins on Nos. 11 and 12 before the two players halved Nos. 13 and 14 with pars to wrap up the match. Lincoln Johnson is 2010 Juniors 10-12 champion Chaska’s Lincoln Johnson may have been the smallest in stature but his game proved to be better than his older counterparts in the 2010 Junior 10-12 Division championship flight. Johnson, at just 10 years old, battled 12-year-old Sam Franklin of Maple Grove and persevered in a tight match for a 2-up win. Franklin was the division medalist after shooting a 42 in qualifying, but Johnson never trailed on his way to the win. He finally broke through on their fourth hole by taking No. 13 with a par. Franklin responded with a win on the 14th before Johnson answered right back with another par win on 15. It’s a lead he never lost again. Both players halved the next two holes with bogeys to set up an intense final hole. Franklin needed to take 18 to force a playoff. Instead, Johnson found a way to make bogey and pick up a win on the hole to put the finishing touches on his championship. JUNIOR 10-12 DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP OPENING ROUND Lincoln Johnson def. Alex Golf Club is ready The staff and course are prepared for the 90th event
Echo Press file photo
The Alexandria Golf Club has its course ready for the opening of the 90th Resorters Golf Tournament this week, including the signature No. 7 green shaped like the state of Minnesota.
For 89 years, the Resorters Golf Tournament at the Alexandria Golf Course (AGC) has been providing memorable moments of great golf. But it goes far beyond that. It’s an event that binds families together, keeps drawing new generations of families into the lakes area and establishes proud traditions that connect the past to the present. This year, the tournament celebrates its 90th anniversary and again, many of the best golfers in the state will be competing in the week-long event. The galleries will be filled with family and golf enthusiasts, all on hand to share the beautiful drives, the errant shots and the game-winning putts on a course filled with history and signature holes. The tournament will include not only some very serious competition that kicks off with the annual ProAm on opening Sunday, but some lively fun as well with a putting contest and the ever-quirky derby, sure to coax a laugh from even the most serious player. Many high profile athletes have competed in this tourney, most notably professional golfer and Alexandria graduate Tom Lehman, who won the Resorters title in 1980. The Alexandria Golf Club is the place that the PGA Tour
AGC IS HISTORIC The Alexandria Golf Club is the oldest golf course in the Alexandria area, dating back to 1915 AGC is an 18-hole facility that plays 6,504 yards from the back tees with a course rating of 71.9 and a slope of 132. It boasts a signature green – No. 7 – which is shaped like the state of Minnesota Professional and USA Ryder Cup Captain learned the game of golf. More than 300 golfers will take part in the tournament again this year. The Alexandria Golf Club and the Resorters Golf Tournament are nothing short of spectacular. Of the three largest golf competitions in out-state Minnesota – the Pine-toPalm in Detroit Lakes and the Birchmont in Bemidji – the Resorters is the longest-running tournament. The most famous hole on the course –the 7th hole – has an elevated tee that plays 172 yards from the back tees. The shot to the green, shaped like the state of Minnesota, is over a creek, protecting the putting surface. So be sure not to miss this signature event in the lakes area. If you’re a golf enthusiast, it offers some of the best free entertainment around.
