Adding to the Lehman legacy Thomas makes first run into the Men’s Champ semifinals By Eric Morken emorken@echopress.com

homas Lehman admits that there has been some inherent pressure that comes with playing in the Resorters Golf Tournament every year. After all, this is the course his dad – fivetime PGA Tour winner and 1996 British Open champion Tom Lehman – grew up on. Saying the Lehman family has history at the Alexandria Golf Club is an understatement. “Sometimes,” Thomas said of feeling that pressure to win here. “Just because this is my dad’s home course, home town. Everyone knows him and they know I’m his son, so there’s expectations. There’s definitely some pressure.” At this point, Thomas is starting to brush that pressure aside. In his early 20s now, he has played the

Resorters for years and has been a part of the Men’s Championship Division the last handful of those. This year, with his dad on the bag with him, he is playing the best golf he has ever played at this tournament. “His game has really progressed,” Tom said. “He really didn’t play golf until after he graduated from high school, so the last five years have been a real progression for him. He’s now getting to the point where he’s doing a lot of things really well. Not perfect, but his good golf now is extremely good.” That was on full display on Friday. Thomas secured his first-ever spot in the Men’s Championship Division semifinals with a 6-5 win over Dylan Naylor of Fargo. Joining him on Saturday morning from the 1st tee at 6:50 will be Cecile Belisle,

It’s a field that anybody could win, but Lehman is playing as well as anyone as he tries to capture his family’s third championship at the Resorters. Thomas took off on No. 6 during his quarterfinal round against Naylor. He hit a 7-iron 220 yards to within five feet of the cup. That putt dropped for eagle, and the rest was history. He took over from there, birdying holes

Everybody who is still left is a really good player, so no guarantees. Anybody can be beaten, but I know for a fact there’s nobody we’re afraid to play. If he can go out and play his game and is fortunate enough where things go his way and the putts drop and he can sneak out a victory, I think that would be a pretty sweet celebration. A new champion will emerge

Lehman, Belisle, McCarthy and Lindberg square off on Saturday By Eric Morken emorken@echopress.com On Thursday, one of the hottest golfers in the field went down when Cecil Belisle knocked off second-seeded Ben Sigel. Then on Friday, it was the defending champion who faltered. Such is life in match play, and a Resorters field that looked pretty wide open in the Men’s Championship Division coming into this week played out just like that with a new champion sure to be crowned on Saturday. Thomas Lehman, Miles McCarthy, Belisle and Andrew Lindberg are the last four standing. Lehman blew open his match with a torrid stretch after a bit of a slow start. Belisle, McCarthy and Lindberg all had a long fight on their hands before they could take a sigh of relief. Here is a closer look at how all four reached the first tee box at 6:50 a.m. on Saturday when Lehman and McCarthy battle and Belisle plays Lindberg for the right to play for a title in the afternoon.

McCarthy def. Brian Choe, 2-1

McCarthy, a junior at the University of St. Thomas this fall, got the start he wanted against defending champion Brian Choe of Coppell, Texas. McCarthy struck first with birdies on Nos. 1 and 2 before his par win on three put him 3-up. “I was focused on getting off to a good start,” McCarthy said. “I played with Brian (Thursday) and knew what he did last year. I knew getting off to a good start was big. I hit a really good tee shot on the first hole that got me going. Had a nice putt on the second, and then Brian kind of went into a lull and I kind of took advantage of it.” McCarthy needed to take advantage of those opportunities because Choe came on late. McCarthy’s eagle on No. 11 put him 5-up, but then Choe got going. An eagle on the par-five 12th hole gave him a little momentum, and he followed it with a birdie win on 13. Another birdie on 15 for Chose, and all of a sudden the two were separated by just two holes with two left. “On the back nine, he pushed hard,” McCarthy said. “I just stayed steady and knew it would be nice to win 5-4, but 2-1 is just as good. He’s a really good player. He didn’t have it, and he was telling me that, but he brought it together at the end. That just shows how good he is.” McCarthy was calm and steady on 17 when he needed to be. After Choe stuck his drive on the green for a look at birdie, McCarthy did the exact same. It was all but over

Belisle made the semifinals by winning a close, 1-up match against Alexandria’s Noah Boraas. from there as both players two-putted to halve the hole and send McCarthy home a winner. “I knew grinding out pars and getting a couple of birdie looks would get it done,” McCarthy said of finishing off the match. “That’s all I was really trying to do.” McCarthy made some putts early on Friday that keyed his hot start, but it’s been his driver that has carried him much of this week. “I was struggling with speed all week, but my driver has been pretty spot on,” he said. “It’s been nice knowing I’m

going to be in the fairway and be able to get some of these par fives because Brian hits it far. Keeping up with him a bit and not feeling like I’m 40 yards behind was nice.” McCarthy has played in the Resorters about seven times but never made it to a semifinals before. Now a little older and more experienced, he felt he was ready to do exactly what he’s done through three matches. “My game has been feeling good this week, so I kind of felt like this could be the week to get to Saturday and keep pushing,” McCarthy said.

“I’m really excited. I know a lot of the guys in the field, and it’s cool to have people out and watching you like this.”

McCarthy will play another player in the semifinals who fits a similar description to him — someone who has played in the Resorters many times but is probably playing the best golf he has ever played in Alexandria this week. He eagled No. 6 by hitting a seven iron 220 yards to within five feet of the cup and then sank the putt. “The eagle on 6 (was key) and then I hit a bad shot on 7 and we ended up tying the hole even though I made bogey,” Lehman said. “After that, I kind of went on a run.” That’s an understatement. Lehman won the next five holes from eight through 12 with four birdies and another

eagle on the par-five 12th hole. “Today it was wedges, irons and putting is what worked,” Lehman said. “The driver at times was a little erratic, but overall I was able to put it close to the hole. The last seven holes I played really solid, and that’s kind of what did it.” The win puts Lehman into a position to try to capture his first title at the Resorters. It’s a tournament that his dad, Tom, won in 1980 before going on to a long career on the PGA Tour. The Resorters is also an event that his uncle, Jim Lehman, won in 2009. That’s why a couple more wins on Saturday would mean a lot for Thomas and his family. “It would mean so much to me,” Thomas said. “My dad won it all these years back. It would be huge. I’d be ecstatic.”

Belisle def. Boraas, 1-up

The closest match in the division belonged to Belisle and Alexandria’s Noah Boraas on Friday. This one went to the 18th hole where both players ended up parring, and Belisle secured the 1-up win. The turning point came on 17 when Boraas three-putted for bogey, and Belisle got out of there with a par. Both players graduated from high school this past spring, so the experience of playing in front of a big gallery as the last match out on the course

on Friday was enjoyable for both. Boraas liked the way he played for much of the day. His birdie on No. 2 gave him an early lead before Belisle used a birdie of his own on 5 and an eagle win on 6 to go 1-up. That’s where things stood until the 10th when Belisle again birdied to increase his lead. Boraas had a rally in him from there. His birdie win on 14 and a par win on 15 pulled him even. Belisle had just a little more down the stretch as his three straight pars on 16, 17 and 18 were enough to get the win.

Andrew Lindberg of Coppell, Texas has been a regular at the Resorters over the years, and he went out and took his match against Jim Hoselton of Phoenix, Ariz. Both golfers played well. Hoselton shot 35 on the front.

Hanson and Larson advance to finals By Jared Rubado jrubado@echopress.com The final matchup of the Junior 10-12 Division tournament will take place on Saturday at 8 a.m. on the 10th hole between top-ranked Charlie Hanson and thirdranked Carver Larson. The semifinal matchups began on the Larson Hanson 10th tee on Friday morning. The nine-hole match play was tightly contested before determining the two winners.

Hanson def. Sladek, 3-2

Ashton Sladek went up one on No. 10 following Hanson’s early bogey. Hanson squared the match when Sladek had a bogey of his own on No. 11, but Hanson’s pars on holes 12 and 13 put him in the driver’s seat with a two-hole advantage. Sladek trailed by two heading onto the 16th green. After he barely missed his par putt, Hanson saved par and secured the win. Hanson was one stroke above par through six holes.

Larson def. Boe, 2-1

Hanson wasn’t alone in winning three straight holes. After a double bogey on No. 10, Larson rebounded by winning holes 13, 14 and 15. Both he and Carson Boe of Cottonwood shot par in their final three holes as Larson advanced to the finals with a 2-1 win. Catching fire on the back Battey, Blanchard both rally late By Al Edenloff aedenloff@echopress.com Two wiley AGC veterans with a history of playing tough matches against each other will clash for the Resorters Masters’ crown on Saturday. Dave Battey knocked out the division’s defending champion, Randy Johnson of Alexandria, 4-3 while Norty Blanchard escaped with a 3-2 victory over Tom Ryan of Minnetonka. The two have squared off twice before in the Resorters and last August they competed for the AGC Championship. Battey came out on top by two strokes, 75-72-147, to Blanchard’s 73-76-149. As part of their prize, they each won prime parking spaces at the club, right next to each other. “We are buddies,” Battey said. The buddy story will continue tomorrow when they square off for

all the marbles from the No. 1 tee at approximately 12:30 p.m. Here’s a look back at Friday’s matches:

Battey def. Johnson, 4-3

Battey, the number four seed, had to battle back against Johnson after finding himself three down after just seven holes. “That guy is a bulldog with the putter and is a competitor,” Battey said of his opponent. “He got on a roll in the beginning.” The first hole showed how Johnson never gives up on a hole, Battey said. Johnson’s tee shot almost went out of bounds but he recovered, saved par and halved the hole. Johnson won Nos. 2 and 3 with par, bogey and added another par win on the par-3 7th to go 3-up. Battey bounced back, taking Nos. 8 and 9 with par and added a clutch birdie on No. 10

to draw even. After halving No. 11, Battey caught f i r e , Blanchard Battey winning the next four holes with birdie, par, par, bogey. That last bogey was good enough to win the hole and seal the match. “He just missed a few putts he normally makes,” Battey said about the defending champ. “He’s a great guy.” This is the deepest Battey has gone in the Resorters, although he has made it to the semifinals four times in the past and was a medalist once.

Blanchard def. Ryan, 3-2

Like Battey, Blanchard also had to stage a rally on the back nine to stay alive. He did by blistering the course with four birdies in the final six holes. “My putter was working well,” said

Blanchard after the match. “I hit some really good putts.” Blanchard was quick to change the topic to his opponent. “Tom is a fierce competitor,” he said. “I was just hanging on for dear life until I hit those birdies.” Blanchard won the first hole with a birdie but Ryan surged out front with back-to-back par wins on Nos. 3 and 4. After both golfers halved the next hole, Blanchard squared the match with a birdie on No. 6 only to fall behind to Ryan’s par on No. 7. They both halved the next two holes, which put Ryan 1-up at the turn. Ryan made par on No. 10, but Blanchard bounced right back and won 11 with birdie, 12 with birdie, 13 with birdie, 15 with par and 16 with birdie, which lifted him to a 3-2 victory. won a 5-4 match against Will Harris to add another one. Thomas has had to wait awhile to be in this position. He is at a point now where he entered this year’s matchplay portion of the tournament as one of the favorites after qualifying as the fourth seed by shooting 4-under par through 36 holes. “It feels amazing. Years past, I’ve had a couple of tough draws on the first matches and ended up playing some good players,” Thomas said. “Being able to win three in a row after not making it past the first match the last few times really feels good. It feels nice to have everyone supporting me, and I can’t wait for (Saturday).” Thomas and his dad shared a couple special rounds in mid-July when Thomas caddied for Tom at the British Open. Past champions get an exemption into the Open Championship, but there’s an expiration date on that. It only applies to former winners 60 and younger. With Tom turning 60 in March, he knew the tournament at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland would likely be the last time he played in the event that was his only major championship. “Having him caddy for me at the British Open, my last one, was special,” Tom said. “We’ve had some good weeks together when he was caddying for me.” Tom is returning the favor this week by being on the bag for Thomas. “He’s been awesome,” Thomas said. “He’s helped me quite a bit reading greens and choosing clubs. Just him being on the bag with me means so much if I could end up winning this.

Even if I don’t pull it off, this whole week has been amazing with him on the bag.” Tom called it a huge advantage for him having grown up in Alexandria and playing at AGC forever. He knows the greens and how the ball reacts

out of the rough. That’s different in different parts of the country, including around Scottsdale, Ariz. where the Lehmans live. “You almost never hit a ball that doesn’t jump out of the rough,” Tom said of AGC. “He’s not used to that. I

think I’ve been really helpful to him reading the greens and then selecting the right clubs. He’s hit some great shots out of the rough where instead of hitting eight iron, he’s hit wedges or something. That was a big adjustment for him.” Tom said Thomas’ natural golf swing has always been pretty good – a product of growing up around many of the best players in the world while following along with his dad on the tour. Being right beside him on the course all week has been beneficial for both father and son as Thomas continues to try to grow his game and his dad tries to help with that. “I love to see this with all of my kids,” Tom said. “The girls were competitive cheerleaders. My two boys played football and golf. Just to kind of be a part of what they do and help them along the way, that’s what I love. “To be able to carry the bag for him, I learn more and more the way he thinks on a golf course. What you may take for being down on himself is more being angry at himself and motivating himself. The more I know how he thinks, the better I’ll be able to give him good advice.” The two hope they have a couple more rounds to play together this week. Thomas is well aware of his family’s history at the Resorters. He’ll try to add to it on Saturday. “It’d be kind of coming full circle,” Tom said. “I’ve won, my brother won, but there’s two tough matches ahead. Everybody who is still left is a really good player, so no guarantees. Anybody can be beaten, but I know for a fact there’s nobody we’re afraid to play. If he can go out and play his game and is fortunate enough where things go his way and the putts drop and he can sneak out a victory, I think that would be a pretty sweet celebration.”

Moen upsets Boraas; Gogel keeps rolling By Jared Rubado jrubado@echopress.com Charlie Moen is in a similar position to the one he was in last summer. After four rounds of golf, he is one of two players that remains in contention for the Junior 13-15 Championship Division title on Saturday. Last year, Moen took home the top prize in the Junior 10-12 field. Now, he has his sights set on making back-to-back summers memorable. “I tell myself to stay calm,” Moen said. “Winning last year has definitely helped me because I know that anything can happen. A hole is never over until it’s over.” Moen advanced to Saturday by beating the top seed in the field. Alexandria’s Hannah Boraas looked strong through two rounds of bracket play but had trouble overcoming Moen on Friday. “We both were playing really well,” Moen said. “Credit to Hannah because she played great. It was a difficult match but it feels good, really good.”

Moen got the start he wanted by going up three after winning holes one, three and four. However, Boraas would par No. 5 and birdie 6 to cut Moen’s lead to one. Boraas squared the match on the par-three No. 7 after Moen bogeyed. Moen took a two-hole lead again after back-to-back birdies on Nos. 11 and 12. Moen protected the lead as he matched Boraas hole-for-hole on his way to a 2-1 win. Heading into the Junior 13-15 final, Moen’s confidence is high after beating a great player.

“ M y putting and driving has been really good for me this w e e k , ” Gogel Moen Moen said. “It’s exciting. This is a really fun tournament and I’m ready for tomorrow.”

For Moen to finish off a championship, he will have to go through the second seed in the field after taking care of the first. Thomas Gogel advanced to the finals after another dominating performance over third-seeded Leo Werschay. “I’ve had consistency with my irons and my short game has been good,” Gogel said. “I’m taking everything stroke-by-stroke and just trying to play the best I can.” Werschay was able to keep the contest close for the first half of the front nine. Gogel took a one-hole lead but saw it slip with a bogey on No. 4. Gogel flipped a switch and finished out the front nine the way he wanted to. He took a four-hole lead with wins on Nos. 5, 6, 7 and 9. Werschay did everything he could to battle back. He cut his lead to three by winning the 10th hole. Gogel responded with a birdie on No. 11. Werschay made one last push, but fell short. After a birdie on hole 12, Gogel clinched the win with a par on No. 13. Gogel says one of the reasons he’s playing so well is because of the time

The semifinal matches played together, giving the winners a preview of what’s to come on Saturday. “I like match play because I can see what I need to do to be better than whoever I will face,” Gogel said. “Tomorrow, I can’t make big mistakes.

Herzog domination Leah and Madison Herzog breeze through semifinals By Jared Rubado jrubado@echopress.com Last summer, Leah Herzog played in the final round of the Women’s Regular Championship Division but came up short. What made that title match unique was her opponent. She went up against her sister, Stephanie. After losing 4-3, the University of Nebraska sophomore is back in the same position. This time, her opponent is her cousin, Madison Herzog. “It’s fun to play with family,” Leah said. “Everybody is out there watching and cheering everybody on. It was the same when I played my sister last year so it should be a fun day tomorrow.”

What made Friday’s round so impressive for Leah was she never lost a hole. She dominated from start to finish by winning Nos. 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 10 and 12 on her way to beating Amanda Woodhull 7-6. Leah had two birdies in 12 holes. She was 2-over on the day. On Saturday, all eyes will be on Leah once again. After playing under that spotlight for a year, she knows what it’s like to have the gallery watching. “I think it’s fun having all of the people around,” Leah said. “I’ll get to the course and warm up like I usually

do. I just want to keep a clear mind and try to have fun tomorrow.”

Much like Leah, Madison was nearperfect in her semifinal match on Friday. She won five holes on the front nine including her birdies on Nos. 5 and 8. The only blemish was on the 10th hole when she could not match Alexis Guggisberg’s birdie. Leah and Maddison will tee off at 12:15 p.m. from the first tee alongside the Women’s Executive Championship Division final. Madison is the thirdranked player in the tournament after shooting a 75 in the qualifying round. Leah shot a 78 and earned the fifth seed. The Resorters is a weekend that Leah circles on her calendar. Not only does she enjoy the format, but she also likes having a good time with family and friends. “I always look forward to coming here,” Leah said. “I love doing match play and this weekend is my last tournament of the summer so I try to make it a good one. Aldrich, Sullivan square off for third time

For the third straight year, Betsy Aldrich of Minneapolis will tangle with Jodi (Krafka) Sullivan of St. Petersburg, Florida for the Resorters Women’s Executive Division title. Aldrich was the 2017 winner, 2-up, while Sullivan took home the prize last year, 1-up. Both are pumped for today’s final. “Betsy was playing really good today,” noted Sullivan on Friday. “I hit my driver perfect earlier this week but my irons and drives were off-tempo today, so I’ve got to get my act together tomorrow.” Sullivan added that the match will come down to who is scappier and able to rebound from mistakes. Aldrich is looking to win her third trophy in the division; she also won it all in 2007. Sullivan also has a strong track record at the Resorters. She won the Women’s Division in 1985 and 1987 and was the runner-up in 1989. Sullivan built a steady lead against Alexandria’s Nancy Syverson, the division champion in 2000 and 2001, and didn’t look back. Sullivan won the first hole with birdie and added a par win on the next hole to go 2-up. After settling for bogeys on No. 3, Sullivan struck for a par win on the 4th hole. Syverson won Nos. 5 and 6 with pars to get within one, but Sullivan quickly shut the door, taking Nos. 7, 8 and 9 with pars to go 4-up at the turn. Syverson tried to mount another comeback with a par win on No. 10 but once again Sullivan squelched the rally by winning Nos. 11 and 12 with pars to go 5-up. Both women matched pars on Nos. 13 and 14 to end the match. Sullivan found herself in three divots out on the fairways yesterday but was able to make long putts and save par. She wasn’t entirely satisfied with how she played. “My game was not as solid,” she said. Overall, Sullivan said she’s playing a lot better at this year’s tournament than last year. “I’ve been trying to play

on the weekends and living in Florida, I’m able to play golf year-round.”

Aldrich trailed Pam Marlow of Wichita, Kan. by one after three holes but quickly found her rhythm to coast to a 6-4 win. “I birdied four of the last five holes,” Aldrich said after the match. “Pam Marlow played great all the way to 14. A 6-4 score sounds like I cruised but I really didn’t. I played well. It was a great match.” Marlow, who was a finalist in the Women’s Executive Division in 2000, jumped to an early lead with a par on No. 1. After halving the next two holes with pars, Aldrich birdied No. 4 to draw even. After swapping pars on No. 5, Aldrich kicked her game into high gear, taking Nos. 6, 7 and 8 with birdies and then matched Marlow’s par on No. 9 to maintain a 3-up lead at the turn. Aldrich won No. 10 with par, tied Marlow’s par on the next hole, won No. 12 with par, matched Marlow’s par on the 13th hole. Aldrich put the match away with a par win on No. 14. The Men’s Grand Masters championship match was determined on Friday morning after Clayton Pike and Tom Eidsvold survived the semifinal rounds. Pike advanced with a win over Gary Obele while Eidsvold defeated Dave Harris. The Saturday finale will take place at 11:15 a.m. off the first tee.

Eidsvold def. Harris, 5-3

The match couldn’t have started better for Eidsvold. He went up three with a birdie on the first hole. Harris’ slow start didn’t last long as he matched Eidsvold until the ninth hole. Eidsvold went 4-up into the turn after Harris bogeyed. Harris kept pace with Eidsvold until No. 15 when a bogey ended his run for a title. Eidsvold completed his 18 holes and shot a 76. Friday was Eidsvold’s second win of the tournament. On Wednesday, he eliminated Pike, 3-2.

Pike def. Obele, 1 up

To earn a rematch with Eidsvold, Pike had to win in thrilling fashion.

Obele’s birdie on the first hole put him up one. However, a double bogey and back-to-back bogeys gave Pike a two-hole advantage. Pike would extend his lead to three with a par on the sixth hole. The end of the front nine was one Pike would like to forget. After holding a three-hole advantage, Pike’s two double-bogeys cut his lead to one. Despite shooting the lower score of 42, Obele went to the back nine trailing. Pike regained his two-hole lead, only to lose with this third double-bogey of the day on hole 12. After Pike bogeyed on 14, the match was squared when he double-bogeyed again on No. 15. With two holes remaining, Pike went 1-up again with a birdie on No. 17. Obele had his chance to tie the match on the final hole. For the fifth time on Friday, Pike shot a double-bogey. However, Obele’s double-bogey on the 18th hole was just enough for Pike to earn a spot in the championship on Saturday.

Three Johnsons and Schomer to battle Can Dan or JT pull off an upset? By Eric Morken emorken@echopress.com JT Johnson knows exactly the kind of work he has cut out for him if he’s going to get his first Resorters title on Saturday. At age 55, he’s played both the Senior Division and Executive Division the last handful of years and he’s been close to winning a championship. If he gets over that hump this year, it will come at the expense of one of the more dominant players in any of the Resorters divisions. Daryl Schomer and Troy Johnson will play each other in the Executive Division semifinals on Saturday morning. That will have the feeling of a title bout with Schomer owning four Resorters championships and Troy Johnson being the defending division winner. “I am playing good golf, top-level golf, and I’m not a favorite against either one of those guys if I make the final,” JT Johnson said. “That tells you. I might not even be a favorite in my (first) match.” That first match for JT will come against another Johnson — Dan of Elk River. He knocked off second-seeded Geoff Klein on Friday afternoon. “If you had guys watching how Dan has been playing these last two days, it would be an even-money bet, and I might be an underdog tomorrow,” JT said. “For sure, though, whichever one of us wins is not a favorite going into the finals. They are that good. Daryl knows this course that good and Troy has an unbelievable pedigree. He’s just that good.” Troy Johnson and Schomer may be the favorites, but whoever comes out of the JT and Dan Johnson match won’t have to face both of them. One of them will be looking to pull the upset against whoever they play. The Men’s Executive Division semifinals get going at 7 a.m. before the finals at 12:45 p.m. Here’s a look at how Friday’s matches played out.

the end result was a 4-up lead over Jeff Johnson of Chaska. That was enough to go on and secure the 5-4 win. JT’s birdie on that opening stretch came on JT Johnson def. Jeff Johnson, 5-4 the third hole. Jeff cut it JT Johnson shot back to a 2-hole deficit 1-under through the first with a par win at 5 and four holes on Friday and a birdie win at 7. That

was the final hole Jeff would take as JT used par wins on Nos. 8 and 11 before his birdie on No. 13 helped end the match one hole later. “I drove the ball really, really well,” JT said of his round. “I was not very solid with my irons, but I had a 9-iron in on

my second shot on (the par-five) 6. I just bombed the drive, and still made five. Those are the kinds of things where if you’re playing medal play, it’s a different story. I stopped being aggressive. If you stop being aggressive, bad things can happen. “Jeff was upset at himself. He could have played a lot better. Match play is not necessarily about playing great. It’s about playing better than the guy you’re playing today.” JT did that on Friday. He knows he has a challenge ahead of him if he’s going to do it again on Saturday. “I’m going to have to continue to drive it well,” JT said. “I’m going to have to hit a lot of greens, and I’m going to

have to make some birdies. I could shoot even par (Saturday) and not win. From the back tees, if you shoot even par, you’re usually going to beat everybody. Not when you’re in the final four.”

Three straight birdies on the front nine helped 10h-seeded Dan Johnson earn a spot in the semifinal round on Saturday. After losing the third hole, Johnson birdied Nos. 4, 5 and 6 to go up two. A bogey on No. 9 cut his lead to one heading to the back nine. Secondseeded Geoff Klein had only one bogey but still found himself trailing Johnson. Johnson went up two

after Klein bogeyed the 10th hole. After a par on No. 11, Klein eagled the 12th hole to cut Johnson’s lead to one. His first birdie of the day came on No. 14 to square the match. Klein would like to have the end of his Friday round back. In his final three holes, he finished with three bogeys. Johnson shot par on all three and took a 3-1 win.

Jerry Vetsch of Becker had pulled off a couple of upsets to get to the quarterfinals. The 28th seed in the field had his hands full with fourth-seeded Daryl Schomer. After two birdies, Vetsch took an early two-

hole lead. However, two bogeys cut his lead to one going into the fifth hole. That’s when Schomer took control. He showed why he’s one of the top players in the field by winning the next six holes. In those six holes, he had three birdies and three pars. After his hot start, Vetsch tried to make a comeback by winning the 12th hole, but Schomer took Nos. 13 and 14 on his way to a 6-4 win.

Haugen, a 2-up winner over Mark Lindberg in the Men’s Senior semi-finals yesterday, is eyeing his third straight division title. Herzog, who scraped out a 21-hole win over Greg Mattson of Becker Friday, owns Resorters trophies from 1984 (Men’s Division), 1992 (Executive), 1993 (Men’s Division), 2012 (Men’s Senior) and 2013 (Men’s Senior). There will be a feeling of deja vu when the two Alexandrians square off for the 2019 title today at approximately 12:30 p.m. from the No. 1 tee.
