Is it time to change your

COUNTERTOP? I

s your kitchen or bathroom countertop discolored, stained, chipped, cracked or warped? Or is it simply outdated? Then the time has come to bid it farewell.

CUSTOM MADE

Many companies that specialize in the manufacture of countertops will come to your home, show you samples and take all the necessary measurements in order to create your new countertop. So, will you opt for granite, marble or laminate?

To remove the old one First, cut the seal around the counter with a sharp tool. Then remove all the screws from under the countertop. Remove the sink using a sturdy metal spatula or a crowbar, then you can remove the old countertop safely. Be sure to check with your municipality about how to properly dispose of it. An important tip: Don’t forget to turn off the water supply to the kitchen before touching any pipes.

Installing the new one To install your new countertop (preferably custom made), ask for help from someone who is good with their hands. Get yourself a level, some Teflon tape, some screws and a screwdriver. Keep in mind that you don’t want to use screws that are too long, as they may create ugly bumps on the surface of the countertop. Position the new countertop with the help of your assistant and adjust it so it is level and perfectly aligned. Lastly, apply a layer of Teflon tape around the edges, where it joins the wall, to ensure that it will be waterproof. And now all you have to do is sit back and admire your handiwork.

Tips for installing

crown moldings

Crown molding must be cut at a 45° angle, an art that often requires a few trial runs.

Crown moldings are a beautiful addition to any room but require patience, know-how and skill to install. Ready to try? The following tips could prove useful. YOUR TOOLS Once you’ve purchased enough crown molding for the dimensions of your room – allowing yourself an additional section of at least eight feet for test cuts – gather together the following items: miter saw, template, hammer, finishing nails, wood glue, latex caulking and a pencil. CUT Crown moldings have to be cut at a 45°angle if they are to fit properly in right angle joints. To avoid costly mistakes, do a trial run on the portion of molding you bought for this purpose. Pressing firmly, stabilize the crown molding on the template and cut it with the miter saw. After placing the test moldings

in a corner and making sure the joint is to your satisfaction, draw some reference points with your pencil. GLUE Once all your final moldings are cut, ask a willing volunteer to help you install them. Start by spreading wood glue over the entire surface of the back of the crown molding before applying it to the wall. Then hammer in the finishing nails approximately every 12 inches. After joining the moldings in the right angles, wipe off any excess glue with a damp cloth. Lastly, before painting your crown moldings, fill the nail holes and cracks with the latex caulking and allow to dry.

WINDOW TREATMENTS for your home

C

Shutters

leverly designed window treatments add personality to every room in the house. Here are the highlights of this year’s trends.

Shutters continue to be popular and are suitable for any type of decor: rustic, sophisticated, contemporary, etc. This year, several international designers have been inspired by Eastern or Mediterranean styles, adding beautiful perforated (or openwork) shutters to their collections.

Natural materials

Raw fabrics, such as silk or linen, give a Zen appearance to modern decors but are very high maintenance. In addition to wrinkling easily, these delicate materials usually have to be dry-cleaned. Similarly, advocates of eco-responsible decorating prefer bamboo, a plant that grows in abundance and at lightning speed. In the form of roll-up or slat blinds, bamboo immediately adds an exotic and cozy look to your home. As a bonus, it’s a real breeze to maintain.

Solar shades

Solar shades are very fashionable at the moment and come in a variety of models to enhance any type of style. In addition to protecting your furniture and carpets from UV rays – and prying eyes – these shades look great when combined with decorative curtains. Visit your local stores to find the perfect window treatments for your home.

island

a customized

T

as the focus of your kitchen

hese days, islands are central elements in most kitchens and come in an infinite variety of configurations. This contemporary key element in today’s kitchen can be adapted to the needs of any size of household. Multipurpose The primary purpose of an island is to add work and storage space to a kitchen. People use it for preparing foods, as an eating area or as a place to hide garbage cans, small appliances or cleaning products. Small islands on wheels are popular because of their convenience, especially in small kitchens. And many busy families appreciate models with a removable or retractable extension – they’re perfect for eating breakfast during the week. Islands are also great for creating a visual division between two areas of an open floor plan.

Custom-built Keep in mind the following factors when designing your island: Plans. Ask a professional to prepare plans for you after you’ve discussed all your requirements. Height. Double check that your counter makes sense ergonomically. You don’t want to get a sore back from bending over to prepare food or have to stand on a footstool to chop vegetables. Construction. Choose materials that are low maintenance, resistant to stains and shocks and that blend in with the rest of your kitchen. You can choose from many materials, including wood, ceramic, laminate, granite, quartz and more.

Make your home bigger –

N

eed more room? Before you consider moving to a larger home, remember that it is often possible to optimize your interior space with just a few renovations and simple modifications. Here are a few tips.

1

Knock down some walls. It is normal to feel a little cramped in a house where all the rooms are enclosed. Having lots of walls creates a barrier, both visually and in terms of movement. For these reasons, many architects and designers favor open floor plans. If this idea appeals to you, you could ask a couple of renovation professionals to inspect your home and identify which walls can be removed without affecting the solidity of the structure. A load-bearing wall can be

from the inside

removed, but it will take more time and money. Check with your municipality to find out if a permit is required for this type of renovation before starting any demolition work.

2

Optimize storage. To help increase available space in your home, go through every room and decide what could be stored more efficiently. Could all those pairs of shoes lying around on your floor be kept on a shoe rack in the closet? Could the DVDs that are gathering dust in your living room be stored in the garage or the attic?

3

Hang some mirrors. In addition to capturing light, mirrors give the illusion of space. Hang some large mirrors in cramped rooms to create an instant feeling of spaciousness.

The benefits of a

water filtration system

T

hese days, you can never be 100 percent sure that the water flowing from your tap is safe to drink, whether you live in the city or the countryside. If you want to know that your drinking water is free of impurities and contaminants that affect its quality and your health, your

best option is to purchase a water filtration system. Water treatment systems eliminate: • Chlorine • Lead • Herbicides • Pesticides • Pharmaceutical residues

A central system

Some companies market filtration systems that can purify all the water that circulates through a home. These devices trap the particles that affect the taste and smell of tap water and help prevent your pipes from corroding. In addition, some of the more sophisticated models have a remote display so you can verify and monitor the condition of the filters, no matter where you are in the house.

Individual systems

There are all kinds of individual water filtering systems. You can see that for yourself just by going to any hardware store or big box store. Some models are simply containers fitted with a filter that you fill with water and place in your refrigerator. Other models are designed to be installed directly on faucets. Most modern refrigerators include water and ice dispensers equipped with a carbon filter. Be sure to replace your filters according to the manufacturer’s recommendations to ensure that your tap water remains pure.

A

re accessories, toys and all kinds of other stuff cluttering up your home? Great news: There are lots of clever ways to hide everything, all while enhancing your decor.

PLAY ROOM Children’s toys can be stored in sturdy multi-colored containers. Keep them on low shelves or under a bench. A colored net or hammock

attached to the ceiling is also a smart way to free up floor space. Just think of all those stuffed animals you can put up there!

KITCHEN Have a large perforated peg board (like those used in garages or workshops) cut to size. Paint it the color you want, attach it securely to the wall and use hooks to hang all your large pots and utensils on it. Apart from giving your kitchen a modern look, this arrangement will free up a lot of space in your cabinets.

LIVING ROOM Remote controls, video gamepads and magazines can be stored in an ottoman designed just for this purpose. Some models come with wicker baskets or stylish racks that make it possible to hide all the odds and ends cluttering up your living room. BATHROOM This room is often short on space, so individual shelves and shelving units are ideal for optimizing storage. Lay out your best towels – rolled or folded like at a hotel – and arrange them with your handmade soaps and bath salts. Lastly, for a clutterfree counter, gather all your various bottles and compacts together on a pretty tray.

Backsplashes THAT ENHANCE A KITCHEN Where home decorating is concerned, the space between your countertop and your cabinets is the perfect place to express your personality. Backsplashes are more popular than ever and are elements that can transform the look of the most important room in your home.

1

Brick A brick backsplash gives an instant traditional, Europeaninspired cachet to your decor. The installation requires a layer of cement, or mortar, and the kind you use may differ depending on the material the wall is made of. Ask an expert about how to proceed.

2

Hardwood Hardwood gives a warm, Zen touch to any decor. However, this material must be suitably waterproofed when used as a

backsplash so it doesn’t get damaged by the inevitable splashes.

3

Decorative tiles Stores stock decorative tiles in a wide variety of sizes, styles and colors. With geometric patterns, glass and ceramic imitations, there’s something for everyone. If you have a limited budget and aren’t very handy, self-adhesive wall tiles are easy to install and give a nice effect at a reasonable price.

4

Wallpaper and glass Hang some gorgeous wallpaper and then have professionals cover it with a glass panel to create an eye-catching backsplash. The made-to-measure glass panel will protect your wallpaper while providing a beautiful, transparent finish. Compliments, guaranteed.

Rejuvenate your appliances Your appliances look old-fashioned but you can’t afford to replace them? No problem: You can easily revamp them yourself without having to spend a fortune.

right position. Then peel off the protective film and attach the decal by smoothing it carefully with a plastic squeegee.

DECALS

Changing the color of an appliance is simpler than you might think. Clean the appliance thoroughly with a water-andbleach mixture and then sand it with a fine-grain sandpaper. Clean the appliance again, making sure you remove all the dust. Cover with masking tape all the parts that you’re not going to paint. Set up your work area outside for the next step of the project, or at least in a well-ventilated area, and then apply aerosol paint according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Ask a hardware store professional about which type of paint is best for your appliance.

Self-adhesive (or peel-and-stick) decals add instant style to the most ordinary of appliances. You’re sure to find something you like among the huge range of styles and models available in stores. Shop around and you’ll see. Before applying a decorative sticker, clean the surface and make sure it’s completely dry. Then cut out the pattern, if necessary, and secure it with painter’s tape to determine precisely where you want it. Take a few steps back to see the result from a better angle and move the decal around until it’s in exactly the

LOOKING FOR THE

SAFEST CAR ON THE MARKET?

S

pring is the busiest time of the year for buying a new car. While fuel economy is one of the most important factors in the choice of a new vehicle, safety is another criterion at the top of the list of requirements. In the past, very few brands bothered to try and be the safest on the market. Also, many consumers thought that buying the strongest built car meant they were buying safety. Studies have now proven that sturdy cars are not as safe as well designed vehicles that are engineered to absorb impact. Today, other safety factors come into play as well. Electronics, for example, have

taken an important place in the engineering of the modern vehicle. Electronic developments permit the use of airbags that can pop up milliseconds before a lifethreatening impact. In fact, these days, many car makers install multiple airbags within the structure of new vehicles. But don’t just count on airbags for your safety when shopping for a new car or light truck. Many other electronic accessories can save lives and save the vehicle itself, as well. These include lane departure warnings, stability control, and brake assistance. Some new cars even come with light collision avoidance systems and accident warning alarms.

CAR W

Prepping your

for summer

inter can sure be rough on your car, even if it was stored in a nice, dry place. Any vehicle that has been kept unused or, worse, one that has been run during the harshest season of the year needs to be carefully detailed. Each and every mechanical maintenance chore has to be done every spring, from the oil change to the tire inspection, and don’t forget the visual inspection for any loose or missing parts or burned lights. Cars and light trucks need to see their drive train maintained, but more time must be spent cleaning and detailing the body. Even unseen parts

of the car might be covered with salt, sand, and road dirt that have accumulated in the undercarriage and the trims. This requires a complete wash of the vehicle, starting with a going-over or two in a no-contact car wash (a car wash using only water spray, without brushes). This step will remove the bulk of the grime, but often leaves behind a film of dirt or some light deposits behind the trim. That is where a manual wash comes in handy. Only the human eye can detect hidden dirt and give the vehicle the tender loving care it needs to stay nice and shiny. And only the human hand can give a car the super detailing touch it deserves.

TIRES

CHOOSING THE RIGHT

C

hoosing the right all-season tires is one of the most important things you’ll do for your car and for your safety. Just as winter tires are designed for special conditions, such as driving in heavy snow or on ice, regular tires can be chosen for specific needs as well, including for performance enhancement or for wet climates. Keep in mind that there is a difference between summer and all-season tires, and that winter tires are a design all on their own. Tire manufacturers generally install all-season tires on most of their cars and light trucks, but remember that they are really not made for the Minnesota winers. True summer tires are mostly

destined for performance cars. When choosing a new allseason or summer tire, don’t just look for the cheapest price. Try to get the best value for your budget’s dollar. Remember that your life and the lives of your passengers depend upon those four

points of contact with the road – a patch of tire that is no larger than the palm of your hand. That is especially so if you like to drive over 65 mph.. A performance car that was created to run on performance tires should always be shod with real performance tires,

no matter how expensive they are. So, remember this piece of information when shopping for a new car: Although they might look like regular sedans, some cars were designed and built with performance in mind, and they absolutely require performance tires. Do not choose less expensive ones that will not meet the car’s engineering in certain situations. Lastly, when looking for a new all-season or performance tire, try to find one that can disperse water very efficiently. That might just be the best advice an expert could give to a car owner living in any area where it can rain at any moment, and very often.w
