ICE FISHING Ice Fishing Challenge offers nearly $68,000 in cash prizes
T
he 12th annual Ice Fishing Challenge, sponsored by the Alexandria Sertoma Club and Viking Sportsmen, is set to take
place Saturday, February 11, from noon to 3 p.m. on Lake L’Homme Dieu near Alexandria. In the past 12 years, the number of participants in the Ice Fishing Challenge has increased dramatically. The event is now Minnesota’s second largest ice fishing tournament. More than 2,200 anglers took to the ice of Lake Agnes to compete in last year’s tournament. This year, the tournament will be moved back to Lake L’Homme Dieu near the Krueger’s Creek access, where it has been held every year except last year. Participants will park just off of Highway 29 (watch for signs) and buses will shuttle them to the tournament site. New this year, is a youth fishing expo hosted by professional fisherman Mike Frischt. The expo will last from 9 to 11 a.m. and everyone younger than age 16 will get a prize. Anglers must bring their own pole. This year’s tournament will also include some vendors at the site. Because some prize money is being rolled over from last year, this year’s tournament will have the biggest cash payout in the tournament’s history, with $57,900 in fishing prizes and $9,800 in raffle prizes. Anglers who catch the top 100 fish in the contest will receive a cash prize. Prizes include $20,000 for first place, $5,000 for second place and $2,500 for third place. Fourth through 100th-place anglers will receive cash prizes ranging from $1,000 to $200. One of the best things about the contest is that you don’t need to have a large fish to be a winner; many of the winners in previous years had fish that
weighed less than one pound. In fact, the way the prize system works, even the participant in 100th place can walk away with $1,000. You don’t even have to fish to be a winner because there is also a raffle drawing set for that day with a total cash payout of $9,800. Raffle prizes include $5,000 for first place, $1,000 for second place and $500 for third place. Winners from 4th through 20th place will receive anywhere from $100 to $500. Raffle tickets, which are $5 each, can be purchased from any Sertoma member in the area, and can also be purchased at the Ice Fishing Challenge. Tickets for the Ice Fishing Challenge are $35 each and can be purchased at Elden’s Food Fair and Christopherson Bait in Alexandria, Koep’s Corner in Glenwood, and the Holiday Super Stop in Sauk Centre. To purchase tickets online, or for more information, visit www.icefishingchallenge.org. Proceeds from the event go to local charities.

MILES OF TRAILS Nearly 400 miles of trails criss-cross Douglas County and connect all its cities
M
innesota has more than 20,000 miles of snowmobile trails that criss-cross its
forests, prairies, hills and lakes. These trails, which are often maintained through a partnership between local clubs, trail users and the state, make Minnesota a popular snowmobiling destination. Here in Douglas County, it’s just as wonderful for snowmobilers. There are breathtaking scenes on 368 miles of Douglas Area Trails Association (DATA) snowmobile trails. These trails wind throughout the county, connecting every community in the area and providing connections to trails in surrounding counties as well. The DATA trails also include part of the Central Lakes Trail, the abandoned Burlington-Northern railway that has been transformed into a paved fourseason recreational trail. The 55-mile Central Lakes Trail connects the communities of Evansville, Brandon, Garfield, Alexandria, Nelson and Osakis. The Central Lakes Trail also connects to the Lake Wobegon Trail, which extends from Osakis to St. Joseph near St. Cloud. Together, the two trail systems are about 120 miles long and extend from Fergus Falls to St. Joseph. Studs are not allowed on either the Central Lakes Trail or the Lake Wobegon Trail.
Douglas Area Trails Association Years ago, there were few places in Douglas County to snowmobile safely. Lakes and ditches were about the only option available until DATA was formed in 1974. The association built the first trail that year (15 miles) with help from private landowners, business people and residents, and by 1975 it had a total of 80 miles. The system grew by leaps and bounds, expanding to 270 miles by 1978. The organization was started by a small group of snowmobile enthusiasts who wanted to promote safe snowmobiling in Douglas County. More than 500 landowners have given permission for trails to cross their property. Without their cooperation, there wouldn’t be a trail system. For more information visit the DATA website at www.douglasareatrails.com. A free trail map and additional trail information is available at the Alexandria Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce at 206 Broadway. See the DATA trail map on Pages 16-17.

ouglas County, located just two hours northwest of the Twin Cities, has a lot to offer with its plentiful lakes and abounding
recreational opportunities. The county got its start in 1858, the same year Minnesota became a state. The area was a wilderness of woods, prairies and lakes, and was home to Sioux and Chippewa Indian tribes. The Red River Trail, used by early pioneers and wagon trains, passed through the county northwest to Fort Abercrombie in Dakota Territory. That summer, brothers Alexander and William Kinkead established a settlement along the shore of Lake Agnes, built a log cabin and hotel, and named the area “Alexandria.” A mail route was set up between St. Cloud and Fort Abercrombie, and soon afterward a road was cut from Fort Snelling to Abercrombie, which allowed for a stage line, and increasing numbers of new settlers. In 1862, news arrived that Indians were massing and war parties were forming. Many settlers headed east to safety, while others combined forces to defend their property. The uprising proved too powerful, however, and the county’s settlements were abandoned. Later, settlers began trickling back into the county and soldiers arrived to build a stockade in Alexandria. Treaties were later signed with the Sioux, and by 1866 things had calmed to the point where the soldiers left town. That same year, Douglas County’s boundaries were officially set. A government land office was even-

Within seven years almost all the county’s tillable land was claimed. In 1878, the railroad was connected from Melrose to Alexandria, and by the next year to Brandon and Evansville. The rail allowed tourists and sportsmen from the east to get to the county easily, and the wealth of fish and game soon made the area a popular vacation spot.

G R E AT I N D O O R S Runestone Museum The Runestone Museum, located near “Big Ole,” is home to the controversial, world famous Kensington Runestone Some consider the Kensington Runestone one of the more significant archaeological finds of the 20th century. They say the large, flat rock was used by Viking explorers to record their visit to the area more than 100 years before Columbus set sail for the Americas. Others think it’s a hoax. But no matter where you stand on the authenticity issue, the fact is that the stone exists – here in Alexandria. Scholars have spent hundreds of h o u r s studying r u n i c inscriptions on the stone and researching other historical data. To this day, the stone is still being examined by professionals, and the controversy continues. Start your museum tour with an eight-minute video telling the history of the Kensington Runestone and the Viking explorers. Then enjoy the story of the

The Knute Nelson home in Alexandria was the home of one of the area’s most “famous” residents. Knute Nelson served the people of Minnesota in public office for more than 50 years. He was elected to the Minnesota Legislature, serving two terms in the U.S. Congress before becoming the state’s first foreign-born governor. He then served in the U.S. Senate for 28 years. Nelson built a small house in Alexandria in 1874. As his career progressed, he made several additions to the house. After Nelson died in 1923, his house was given to the Norwegian Lutheran Church and became a “home for the aged.” In 1978, the house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1987 the “Knute Nelson House” became the headquarters of the Douglas County Historical Society. Hours are Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Guided tours are $2 per person and are available from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information call (320) 762-0382 or visit www.dchsmn.org. Located at 1219 South Nokomis in Alexandria.

The Big Splash offers a wide variety of water activities to choose from including: •Three four-story waterslides that twist and turn inside and outside of the water park. •A lazy river inner tube ride. •A lily pad water walk. •A tropical whirlpool spa and waterfall. •A children’s play fort in a zeroinch-entry pool area, which includes three slides, water blasters, geysers and deck bubblers. Formed in 1967, the Alexandria Downtown Merchants Association (DMA) strives to enhance, beautify, and promote the diversity of the city’s thriving downtown shopping and business district while protecting and preserving its historical past. Rich in history since the late 1800s, downtown Alexandria encompasses 3rd through 8th Avenues on Broadway and is a popular shopping destination for antiques, unique boutiques, gift shops, eateries, museums and theater. In addition, DMA organizes projects and events that take place downtown, and takes care of beautification projects, such as the purchase and maintenance of the colorful flower baskets that hang along the streets in the summertime and the “Historic Downtown Alexandria” banners that were put up a couple of years ago. With the DMA’s support, garbage receptacles and more benches were added to the downtown to accommodate shoppers. For more information about DMA, including upcoming downtown events, visit its website: www.downtownalexandria.com. The group is also on Facebook.
