You’re engaged!
NOW WHAT? Top 5 Wedding planning questions to answer
oliday season is engagement season. But after he pops the question and she says “yes,” the reality of wedding planning sets in. Here are the top five questions you will need to answer to make your wedding planning journey a pleasant experience. “After Valentine’s Day, the holidays are the most popular time of year for couples to become engaged,” said wedding planning expert Raymond Miller of My Wedding Reception Ideas.com. “Many brides-to-be who get engaged over the holidays will begin their planning efforts in the first months of the new year. Knowing where to start can be overwhelming.” Brides should begin their planning by answering five basic questions, Miller advises.
H
What is our budget? “Funding your wedding can be one of the most expensive undertakings you’ll tackle in your life together as a couple,” Miller says. “Many couples only spend more on buying a house or car, or funding their children’s college educations.” Setting and sticking to a budget for your wedding is an essential step toward starting your married life on a sound financial footing. Determine where your funding will come from – if your parents can help or if you’ll be paying on your own – and decide how much you can afford to spend without going into debt.
What season works? As soon as you announce you’re engaged, people will start asking
wedding seasons and you may find venues in the destination of your choice are booked a year or more in advance. What kind of venue do you want? Do you dream of a big church wedding? Or saying your “I do’s” in a beautiful natural setting? Perhaps you want your reception to be in a grand hotel. Knowing the type of venue you desire will help you refine your options and choose a specific location down the road.
Who do you want to officiate? Is it important to you to be married by your own church’s minister? Or are you OK with a justice of the peace? Do you fantasize about being joined in marriage by a ship’s captain? Or does your mother have her heart set on seeing you married by the rabbi who was there at your bat mitzvah? Just as popular venues book quickly, favorite officiants also have their dance cards fill fast for popular wedding seasons. As soon as you know who you would like to officiate at your wedding, it might pay to approach him or her and find out about future availability. “Of course there are many, many things to consider when planning a wedding,” Miller said. “But these five points are the basics you must address, and everything else about your wedding will be planned around your answers to these questions. Once you’ve made these initial decisions, it will be easier to refine your options and decide exactly what will make your wedding wonderful, memorable and perfect for you.” (ARA)
what the wedding date will be. To make answering that question as simple as possible, start by considering in what season you would like to be married. Would you prefer a spring ceremony? Or do you dream of a holiday wedding? By narrowing down the season, and selecting it well in advance, you’ll be able to secure a date that will work for everyone.
Where do we want to get married andWill have our reception? you have a destination wedding? Or do you want to keep it local? While wedding planning is usually most successful when done well in advance, if you’re interested in a destination wedding, planning far ahead is essential. Countdown to your wedding day
T
o help you get a better understanding of how to plan a wedding and when you should be making certain decisions, here’s a time frame you can follow that should ensure your wedding goes off as smoothly as possible.
10Iftoyou12haven’t months done it already, this is a good time to announce your engagement and introduce your respective families. Since most reception halls and churches have busy wedding schedules, it is important to book both as early as possible, preferably at least a year in advance of your wedding day. It’s also a good idea to start putting together a guest list around this time and ask your parents whom they’d like to invite as well. Also, since your budget will determine almost every aspect of your wedding, sitting down and determining what you can spend – and developing a savings plan – should be first and foremost.
2 toFinalize 3 months your guest list and mail out your invitations. If your guest list includes many people who are spread out geographically, mail the invitations as close to 12 weeks in advance as possible. This is also a good time to finalize your menu choices for your guests, and find all your wedding accessories such as the ring pillow, candles, etc. Also, since it is tradition to provide gifts for those in the wedding party as well as the parents of the bride and groom, this is a good time to decide on and purchase those gifts. Just to be safe, confirm that all groomsmen have ordered their tuxedos and finalize all transportation, both to and from the wedding and to the airport for your honeymoon.
1 toSchedule 2 months the first bridal-
gown fitting. Also finalize the readings you’d prefer during the ceremony and mail them out to anyone who has agreed to do a reading. If your family prefers to host a small gathering for close family and friends after the wedding rehearsal, the night before the wedding, this is a good time to order any food or drinks you might want to serve that night, or make a restaurant reservation.
6 This to 9 months is the time to start
booking some services, such as a florist, caterer, a DJ or band, and a photographer. However, some of the more experienced DJs, bands and photographers might have their schedules booked a year in advance, so this is something you’ll want to consider doing shortly after you choose a wedding date. Also, this is a good time to inform any guests who will be traveling significant distances of the date of your wedding. The earlier your guests can book a flight, the less expensive that flight will be. This is also a good time to order gowns for both the bride and bridesmaids, as some manufacturers require a few months to ship to bridal shops. You might want to ask someone such as your priest or rabbi to be the officiant of your wedding. And just as out-of-town guests will save travel dollars by booking flights early, you will likely save money, too, if you book your honeymoon early.
4 This to 5 months is a good time to decide on a wedding invitation. Also, now is
an ideal time to start hunting for a wedding cake by sampling a number of different bakeries and their cakes before ultimately making a decision. Just to be sure, confirm that all of the bridesmaids have ordered their gowns and start looking for a tuxedo for the groom and the groomsmen. If you haven’t done so already, purchase your wedding rings and talk to the people that you would like to have participate in the wedding ceremony.

arrangements and see if your wedding rings are ready. This is also when you should get your marriage license and check the guest list to see who has and hasn’t sent an RSVP. For those who have yet to RSVP, you might want to contact them so you can get a closer idea of what the head count will be. You should also prepare and order your wedding program around this time.

1 toGet2aweeks final attendance count and submit it to the caterer as soon as you know it, while also providing a final seating chart. Pick up the wedding gown and tuxedo. Make sure the wedding party picks up their attire. Also, finalize your vows and confirm all wedding-day details such as transportation, photo schedules, and addresses. And don’t forget to pack for your honeymoon.
TheThis day before is mainly when you rehearse for the ceremony and make any
final confirmations you might have to make. Also, make sure to get some sleep so you’ll look good in all of your wedding-day photos. – (MS)

he multi-tiered cake is a favorite wedding tradition that’s often presented at the end of the night. The happy couple takes a slice and enjoys the first piece. In recent years, wedding cakes have become more of an artistic centerpiece than just a confectionary treat. Couples often seek out renowned wedding cake bakers for a cake that will amaze the crowd and complete the theme of the wedding. The average couple will spend between $700 to $800 for their wedding cake. Although many catering halls or reception sites will include the wedding cake in a package deal, many couples choose to order their cake from a specialty bakery who creates culinary masterpieces. If television trends are any indication, many people are opting to spend several hundred to thousands of dollars on a customized wedding cake. These fondant and buttercream creations may be elaborate in nature, so much so that they’ll likely need to be

ordered several months in advance. Couples looking for something a bit different for their upcoming nuptials, may want to consider these trends in wedding cakes. • 3-D accents on the cake, such as graphic appliqués. • A black-and-white motif that gives the cake a simplistic, yet trendy appeal. • A lot of bold color in the cake, instead of just white or ivory. • Dramatic monograms that can add class to the cake. • Painted cakes with edible food coloring paint that feature beautiful landscapes or a portrait. • Cakes that mirror the style of the wedding gown, including fondant ruffles and appliqués. Many couples still opt for the traditional cake, and that is always in style. Instead of experimenting with the outside of the cake, couples can be creative with cake flavor and fillings. Imagine cutting open the cake to find red velvet or a chocolate ganache filling. (MS)

Surviving your wedding
expenses he average couple will spend between $20,000 and $30,000 on their wedding, a figure that does not include additional expenses such as an engagement ring or honeymoon. For many, that is 50 percent more than they have actually budgeted for the occasion. Underestimating wedding expenses can lead to financial distress even before the marriage has begun. In the not-so-distant past, weddings were largely financed by the bride and her parents. Things are much different now. Most weddings now are paid for by the bride and groom with little contribution from family. Young couples just starting out in life may find that weddings are more of a financial commitment than originally anticipated. Planning for the expected – and unexpected – can help couples survive wedding expenses.
T
Savings plan With most couples paying for the majority of the wedding themselves, it will be up to them to come up with the bulk of the wedding finances. Starting to save early is essential. Once you have set the date, begin saving immediately. Even if the wedding won’t be a lavish affair, it will still have some expenses.
• To save, consider curbing recreational spending. Cut dinners out, trips to the movies or non-essential purchases. Place the money you would’ve spent into a wedding account. • Consider having automatic transfers or deposits into an account for forced savings. Many employers can deposit a portion of your paycheck into a separate account. • Eliminate debt right away. It may seem counterproductive, but sometimes you have to spend money to save money. Instead of racking up high interest rate charges on credit card balances, pay down credit cards or other bills you have. Once you are in the clear, you can focus more on saving for the wedding. • If need be, have a long engagement so that you have ample time to save.
Setting a budget Many couples want a dream wedding but do not have the finances to afford a platinum event. But that doesn’t mean they still can’t have a lavish, beautiful wedding. Setting a budget means you can prioritize what you want and what you will pass up. It also provides a savings goal and a firm deadline. • Shop around for the average rates of vendors in your area. Work on the big-ticket items first before focusing on the smaller details. Once you have average prices, you’ll have something to base your

budget on. • Add up the average costs of all of the items on your wish list. If it seems out of range, start removing things you can do without. For example, can you have a brunch reception instead of an evening sit-down dinner to scale back costs? • Always set aside a little extra for those incidental expenses, such as tips for the wait staff and donation to the church – items you may not think to factor in. • Don’t expect wedding gifts to cover the cost of your wedding. While some guests are quite generous, others may not even cover the cost of their meal.
Prioritize A dream wedding is a marriage between desires and reality. Today it is possible to recreate the look of designer gowns and other details with less-expensive options. Figure out your priorities and work from there. Consider these cost-saving options. • Think about where you will be living after you are married. A residence takes priority over a lavish wedding. • Have the wedding party carry fresh-flower bouquets, but use less-expensive silk flowers or even fruit as centerpieces. • Ask your baker to create a small wedding display cake you can use for your photos and serve guests from a much cheaper sheet cake that is hidden in the kitchen. • Get married on a weekday or at an earlier time of day. • Limit the bar to wine, beer and soda to save on the expense of top-shelf liquors. • Register for unconventional gifts, such as contributing to the honeymoon. • Handle some items yourself, such as favors or catering, to keep costs down. (MS)
HOW TO SAVE FOR A WEDDING: Consider having automatic transfers or deposits into an account for forced savings. Many employers can deposit a portion of your paycheck into a separate account. Instead of a Christmas club savings plan, you can have a wedding club.

Invite only Pare down your wedding guest list ouples are faced with many decisions when planning a wedding. One often overlooked decision concerns the guest list. Ideally, couples would love to invite all their friends and family to share in their special day. Realistically, however, budget often dictates just how many guests a couple can invite. That reality has led to a disagreement or two over the years, as both the bride-to-be and her future husband make their case for whom makes the cut. To help avoid such disagreements, couples should consider the following tips when paring down their guest list.
C
• Make a master list as early as possible. It’s impossible to pare down a guest list if there’s no list to begin with. Once the planning process begins, couples should separately write
down all the guests they would like to invite. Once each is finished with their list, the hard work of paring that list down can begin.
• Consider who’s footing the bill. If Mom and Dad are paying for the wedding, then their suggestions for the guest list should carry most of the weight. The same principle can be applied if the couple is paying for their own wedding. If the costs are being split down the middle, then both the groom- and bride-to-be should be allowed to invite the same number of guests. • Ask that kids stay home. Many couples request that their guests leave the kids at home. While nieces and nephews might make the cut, it’s perfectly acceptable for couples to state their preference that children not attend. This can be noted on the invitation, addressing friends as “Mr. John Doe and guest” or “Mr. and Mrs. John Doe.” Guests should take the hint, but if any RSVP with their kids, be sure to call them immediately and explain the situation. Friends and family should understand the preference, particularly in the current economic climate. • It’s not a reunion. Couples are often tempted to invite long-lost friends to their wedding. But cost-conscious couples must recognize their wedding is not a reunion. If the goal is to keep the guest list under control, only invite close friends and family members who have kept in touch with you over the years. • Stick to your guns. Couples vary greatly in what they want in their wedding. Some want a grandiose affair they can share with their whole family and all of their friends. Other couples want a more laid-back affair with only those closest to them in attendance. Whatever their preference, couples should remain firm and not feel guilty no matter how many guests they choose to invite or not invite. • Cut back in other areas. If it’s proving simply impossible to agree on a reduced guest list, consider inviting everyone and cutting back in other areas. Before signing any contracts, closely examine each one for items that can be removed without drastically changing the ceremony and celebration. Chances are there are savings to be had, and those savings might make the difference between inviting and not inviting another friend or family member. (MS)

This may include but not be limited to the following: • Names of all wedding party participants so they can be properly introduced. • Name of the married couple, including pronunciation of the last name, if necessary. • The title of the couple’s song. • The titles of songs to be danced with mother/son or father/daughter.

while guests are dining and when there are opportunities for dancing. It’s essential to listen to musicians or DJs before hiring anyone to ensure what they’re offering will fit in with the wedding. Also, it’s helpful to confirm the person or people being auditioned will be the exact individuals at the wedding. Some entertainment companies hire out contract musicians, meaning the preview musicians may not be the same person who will perform at the ceremony. That can potentially prove disastrous. If a certain musician or DJ is requested, be sure it is put down in writing in the contract.
• Whether a bouquet and garter toss will take place, and which songs should be played during these traditions. In most cases, wedding musicians are professionals who have handled many weddings and are very accustomed to what should be done to make the night a memorable one. Trust in the expertise of the musicians, and provide guidance where necessary. (MS)

Scent-sational ideas for wedding favors
unting down the perfect wedding ensemble, negotiating seating arrangements with squabbling relatives, honeymoon flight reservations that change on a dime – how did something that should be so joyful become
H
so stressful? Planning a wedding can be a high-pressure time, even for couples with a clear vision of what they want and the budget to accomplish it. One aspect of your wedding that doesn’t have to cause stress is choosing wedding favors. Go with something simple, elegant and timeless that will fit the lifestyle of virtually every guest – aromatherapy. Scent is a mood-setting gift that can help establish the tone for your reception, and remind guests afterward how much they enjoyed sharing your big day. You don’t have to give every guest a pricey personal essence or resort to costly scented candles to achieve the perfect aromatherapy wedding favor. Making your own favors not only saves you money, it puts your personal stamp on the mementoes your guests will keep long after the wedding day has passed. What’s more, says Tom Havran, an aromatherapy expert with the personal products company Aura Cacia, “making aromatherapy favors together can help a harried couple slow down, refocus and remember what’s really important – that they’re about to begin a wonderful life together and that the special guests they’ve assembled will bear witness to it all.”
Havran offers some tips for using aromatherapy to combat wedding-planning jitters and create memorable favors: Surround yourself with scents that soothe. A potpourri that features real lavender flowers is a wonderful way to bring comforting, peaceful aroma into your home. Sprinkle the flowers with lavender essential oil and tuck a sachet of the mixture in with your bed linens. Place a bowl on the dining room table. Store some in a mesh bag inside the luggage you’ll be using for your honeymoon. Make the same lavenderbased scent the centerpiece of your aromatherapy favors by placing it in small, handmade sachets that guests can carry home. Planning a holiday wedding? Create a “wise men’s favor” by recycling an empty tea tin. Paint it with your wedding colors or cover it with festive gold paper. Fill the tin with coarse salt and sprinkle with 16 drops of eucalyptus essential oil, 16 drops of lemon essential oil, 16 drops of frankincense and/or myrrh essential oils, and replace the lid. Include instructions to release this ancient sacred scent by removing the lid and placing the tin in a warm location. Another idea that’s good year-round is a soul-warming spa kit. Create a home spa kit with a mineral bath and a body and massage oil. These gifts have a green, lemony-balsamic aroma that revitalizes the body and chases away the blues. Wrap these items in a small basket, adding a loofah or other bath items. Or present them in a personalized mini-tote that features the wedding couple’s name and marriage date.

Traditional & non-traditional ways to celebrate a wedding
S
ome couples want to celebrate their weddings in traditional fashion; others want everything to be unique, new and exciting. Today’s weddings are largely planned, financed and executed entirely by the couple getting married. Therefore, it is up to them how to celebrate their special day. Here’s a look at some of the traditional wedding elements and how they can be shaken up for a different spin. Traditional: Father walks the bride down the aisle. Alternative: A son, daughter, friend, or even both parents walk the bride down the aisle. She can also traverse the white carpet solo, if desired. Perhaps the groom meets the bride halfway and they walk the rest of the aisle together.
Traditional: “The Wedding March” (“Here Comes the Bride”) plays when the bride enters. Alternative: Any favorite classical or modern song is played when the bride enters, as long as it is approved by the venue where the ceremony is taking place. Traditional: Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. Alternative: Wear all new items, all antique items or borrow all of your wedding day apparel – it’s your choice. Traditional: Mother-son, father-daughter dances at the reception. Alternative: Welcome everyone present to dance with a special member of their family so all eyes are not on the bride and groom, who may be self-conscious about dancing with their parents. These dances also can be skipped.

Traditional: Bouquet toss for the bride and garter toss for the groom. Alternative: Toss beads or treats in the style of Mardi Gras to all of the guests, so it’s not only about single men and women. Traditional: A three-tiered wedding cake all in white. Alternative: Choose cupcakes, a festively colored cake that matches the wedding theme or another desired dessert. Traditional: Reception at a catering hall or hotel. Alternative: Reception at an alternative site, such as an aquarium, zoo or museum. Once a couple thinks about what is important at their wedding, they can cater the event toward their personal interests. Tradition can be followed or they can do something completely unique. (MS)

peak to anyone who has been married for years, and you will find that communication is the key to a successful relationship. However, many couples enter marriage without really knowing their spouses, or how they feel about certain beliefs, hopes, aspirations, or even financial concerns. After the glow of the wedding is over, couples who haven’t discussed these important topics may find that stress or arguments arise from miscommunication or misunderstanding. Taking time to sit down with your fiancée or fiancé prior to planning the wedding can help you learn even more about your compatibility and potential for a long-lasting marriage. Here are some of the questions you can ask each other, which may spark meaningful conversation. (Questions courtesy of WeddingPlanningWorksheets.com) – (MS)
• Will we keep our money in joint or individual accounts? • What kinds of things will we talk about first before buying? • Who is going to be in charge of paying bills and other expenses? • How much time do we expect to spend with each other and when? • Where will we live? • How much will we be able to afford? • What if one of us had a career opportunity that required a move to a new city? • What if one of us, or both of us, got fired or laid-off? • How important is money to our relationship and marriage? • What type of material possessions are important to you (each other)? • What is your definition of financial security? • How much is enough for a “safety net” or “rainy day” fund? • How much of our income will we save or invest?
Entertainment/friends: • Will we have a special “night” together? Once a week, once a month? • Who is responsible for cooking or will we share that and how? • Do we have conflicting ideas of style? • How often do we like to go out with friends alone? Together?
Family: • What do you like, or dislike about my family? • Is our individual relationship with our family going to stay the same? • How will we share time with our families during the holidays?
Intimacy and children: • How do we deal with each other’s sexual expectations and needs? • Describe your idea of the ultimate sexual experience? • Will we have children? When and how many? • What will we do if we can’t have children together (adoption, other options)? • How might things around the house/home change once a child is born? • Will one of us give up our career to stay home with our child/children?
Our relationship: • What do you love about me? • Why are you marrying me? • How might previous relationships we’ve had affect our marriage, if at all? • What about me drives you crazy or makes you frustrated? • What about our personalities is different and might be a source of conflict? • How would we know we’re having problems and what would we do about it?

Groom’s Wedding Planner Checklist The bride is not the only one with planning to do! Here’s what the groom should do before the big day:
6 to 12 months before the wedding ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒
Purchase the bride’s engagement ring. Discuss with fiancee the date and type of wedding. Start on your guest list. Choose best man and ushers. Start planning and making necessary arrangements for the honeymoon. Discuss and plan, with fiancee, your new home together. If fiancee is moving in with you, start cleaning out closets, cupboards and drawers to make room for your bride and wedding gifts.
W
Don’t forget to honor the groomsmen
eddings are all about the brides, or so it would seem. While all eyes are on the bride, the groom sometimes goes unnoticed. One person who shouldn’t fail to notice the groomsmen is the groom himself. Groomsmen can and often do have significant responsibilities. A good groom should recognize the efforts of his groomsmen and give gifts as an acknowledgement of their efforts. Following are some gift ideas:
Commemorate the reception.
Men tend to focus on the celebratory aspects of the day. Grooms can give a personalized gift as a means of commemorating the day.
Back to the bachelor party.
These days, weekend getaways are a common theme to many bachelor parties. Consider gifts that evoke memories of that special weekend where you were the guest of honor.
4 months before ❒ ❒ ❒
❒ ❒
2 months before ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒
Meet with officiant to finalize ceremony details. Assist parents with plans for the rehearsal dinner party. Discuss the amount and the financial arrangement for the flowers that are the groom’s responsibility. Arrange accommodations for out-oftown attendants.
1 month before ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒
Go the more fanciful route.
For grooms whose wedding will be an elegant affair, celebrate that elegance by giving each of your groomsmen an engraved pocket watch. (MS)
Shop with fiancee for wedding rings. Complete your guest list, including full names, addresses and ZIP codes with phone numbers. Check requirements for blood test and marriage license in your state, or the state in which you are being married. Select and order men’s wedding attire with your fiancee. Finalize all honeymoon plans and send in deposits if required (don’t delay — some resorts fill up fast in popular months).
❒
See that all attendants have been fitted and wedding attire has been ordered. Purchase gifts for best man and ushers. Purchase wedding gifts for fiancee, if gifts are being exchanged. Pick up wedding rings. Make sure they fit. Take care of business and legal affairs (add bride’s name to insurance policies and medical plans, make a new will, add her name to joint checking account or joint charge cards). If you have both agreed to a pre-nuptial agreement, have it drawn up and signed.
2 weeks before ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒
❒
Together with fiancee, gather necessary documents and get your marriage license. Arrange wedding day transportation. Reconfirm accommodations for outof-town guests. If moving, give change of address card to post office; arrange to have utilities and phone service turned on in new home. If not moving, finish cleaning and reorganizing your home; help your fiancee move her things. Have your hair cut.
1 week before ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒ ❒
Discuss all final details with fiancee; offer to assist if needed. Pick up and try on wedding attire. See that attendants get their wedding attire. Pack clothes for honeymoon. Reconfirm all honeymoon reservations. If flying, make sure you have plane tickets. See to it that you and your attendants are at the rehearsal and that they know their duties. Go over special seating or pew cards with ushers. Make sure luggage is in the car or the hotel where you will stay your first night. Attend rehearsal dinner. Relax and enjoy yourself.

Realize the wedding of your dreams with
PLANNING
here are a few things about weddings that cannot be predicted or controlled, such as what Mother Nature will do on the wedding day. However, there are many items that are well within the control of the bride and groom. Proper planning can help ensure the wedding of their dreams. One of the best ways to ease wedding-day nerves is for the couple to get organized and begin planning their event the moment the engagement period begins. The earlier preparation starts, the better the chance that vendors will be able to provide what’s needed, or that changes can be made when unforeseen events pop up. By making a list of things to do, couples can allot time in their schedules for each task, and they can feel a sense of accomplishment and relief each time an item is checked off the list.
T
Decide on a date Couples should select a date for their wedding soon after becoming engaged. After all, it is the countdown to this day that will help organize and determine planning schedules.
Reserve a ceremony location Traditional weddings take place in a house of worship. It’s best to meet with a pastor, rabbi or other officiant to see if the ceremony site will be available for the wedding. This person will also help guide couples through any religious requirements needed prior to getting married there, as well as any rules and regulations for the ceremony site.
Book a reception site After securing the ceremony location, couples will have peace of mind knowing they can now book the place where their party will take place. This may be a catering hall, hotel, cruise ship, or even someone’s backyard. Sometimes the ceremony site is also the reception site, as is the case in many second weddings. Catering directors are typically on hand to talk about pricing and options. They will work closely with the couple to plan and execute the reception.
Select a photographer Photographers tend to book very quickly, particularly if they are well
with at the studio will be the one shooting the wedding. Some companies have several photographers on hand.
Book a band or DJ Another vendor that tends to have a busy schedule will be the wedding entertainer. Early booking ensures your date will be available. Couples should talk about musical selections and the ways to engage the various generations attending the reception.
Choose a florist Flowers add an elegant touch to the wedding day. A florist will often provide flowers for both the ceremony and the reception. Select a florist who offers helpful, creative ideas about bouquets, corsages and centerpieces – and who will deliver in a timely manner.
Select and order dresses
Wedding and bridesmaid gowns can take several months to order and be tailored. It can also take some trial and error finding a dress shop that meets the needs of a bride and her attendants. So it’s best if this fun part of wedding planning is done early on. While there are no set rules for gown selection, it may help if the bride and her attendants all use the same shop so that styles will be complementary and service and alterations can be organized with minimal fuss.
Order invitations With a bevy of styles of invitations, there will be many ideas to consider. Couples should leave ample time to look through sample books or do research on the Internet. They should decide on a style that best suits their wedding, based on its formality, the time of day and the wedding colors.
Choose transportation Many couples forget to factor limousine or car rentals into their plans. Whether it’s a limo, Rolls, horse-drawn carriage, or a party bus, the bride and groom should arrange for transportation for themselves and their attendants to and from the church and reception.
recommended. It pays to research and choose one early in the wedding-planning process. Every photographer has a different style. The couple should select one who will not only be accommodating to their wishes, but who will also suggest ideas that may not have been considered, such as artistic black and white prints or photo journalism-type images. The photographer’s personality is very important. He or she will be spending the entire day with the couple and should be likable and personable. Couples should also find out if Image Courtesy of Coenen Photography the photographer they speak 28 • Wedding Planner • January 2011
Find formal wear
Tuxedo rentals are quite popular for weddings. If the wedding is taking place during a peak party season, such as prom time, it pays for couples to reserve tuxes several months in advance. All of the groomsmen should rent from the same shop to be uniform. With these decisions made, the bride- and groom-to-be have only a few things left to do, such as selecting wedding favors, addressing invitations and purchasing thank-you gifts. –(MS)
hen two people decide to get married, they’re not only combining their possessions, but they’re also bringing together unique ideas about personal finance. These ideas may bring challenges to the relationship and should be discussed beforehand for the best start to the marriage. Planning ahead can build a strong financial foundation for a new marriage. Before a couple becomes a family unit, each person has his or her own way of saving and spending, as well as their own approach to finances. Additionally, one person may be bringing more debt to the relationship than the other. How finances will be handled should be one of the first conversations – even before a reception venue is booked or a wedding gown is chosen. When joining finances, consider these factors:

Tips for couples about to marry
FINANCES
Estate planning Just because a couple is relatively young and newly married doesn’t mean they shouldn’t begin planning for their future – including a family – immediately. Couples should explore the options on life and medical insurance plans. Sitting down with a financial planner can help, and he or she may be able to spell out options in retirement savings or education savings. It’s never too early to begin investigating these scenarios.
Keep the lines of communication open Bank accounts Money often makes or breaks a relationship. Having similar goals Generally couples will find that a combination of joint and personregarding saving and spending is often the key to couples melding together. The best way to work through difficulties and avoid problems concerning finances is always to talk through all of the options. al accounts makes finances easier. The joint account is used for monthly bills, housing expenses and things the couple does together. Separate accounts can be used for discretionary spending, like vacation accounts, dabbling in investments or simply for splurging. This enables each person to have an independent identity but also share the responsibility of being a couple.

Creative, Budget-Friendly Tips For The Big Day T
oday, more couples are looking beyond standard wedding packages and exploring customized, do-it-yourself options. According to The Wedding Report, couples spent 10 percent less on their big day in 2009 as compared to 2008, and spending from 2007 to 2009 fell by more than 30 percent. By choosing handcrafted wedding touches and forgoing pricey extras, creative couples are mixing and matching a surprising combination of one-of-a-kind wedding elements to create unique and personalized celebrations. From the centerpiece display to the wedding favors, more people are realizing that personal touches can elevate that special day from a cookie-cutter event to an intimately beautiful affair. Here are four fun and budget-friendly ideas to create a wedding that is anything but generic:
Snip and style. If funds are tight but you want to have lots of flowers, enlist your florist to put together some of the more difficult floral pieces – such as the bride’s and bridesmaids’ bouquets – but ask your wedding party or family members to help create some fun floral centerpieces. Purchase the flowers in bulk from your florist – or cut them from a relative’s flower garden if the season is right – and create your own unique centerpieces. Pick and choose. To spend wisely, couples are also turning away from one-size-fits-all wedding packages and demanding more flexibility in the types of wedding resources available. From mixing and matching options such as guest stays, reception celebrations and ceremony settings, couples can handpick amenities and services that fit their budget and wedding needs. Eat and drink. Family and friends can also be offered an inside look at the preferences, passions and experiences enjoyed by the happy couple. Wedding favors could include a favorite chocolate or something that symbolizes the couple’s life (such as local honey, jam or a unique trinket from their hometown). For the aperitif, wine could be poured from a vineyard the couple likes to visit. For the main meal, dishes or drinks can be tailored to represent the cultural heritage of the couple (paella for the Spanish side of 30 • Wedding Planner • January 2011
the family or vodka for the Russian side of the family). Weddings provide the chance to celebrate the special values and history of the couple, through small details that personalize the event and make the setting more intimate.
Capture and share. A professional photographer should certainly be considered for the most important portions of the wedding (ceremony, bridal party and family pictures, etc.); however, guests can also help capture the rest of the special moments. Before the big day, family and friends can be asked to bring their digital cameras to document the memories, along with a few disposable digital cameras on hand for individuals who do not own or forget their cameras. A free online photo service prior to the wedding can provide the couple, the wedding party and guests with the link to upload, download and share their photos after the special day. Printing costs will be slashed in half and everyone can immediately and automatically have a vast selection of images to choose from for their wedding scrapbooks. (NAPS)
Have a Great wedding
FOR LESS
• Plan the wedding for an offpeak time of year, or for a day of the week other than Saturday. • Know someone who has a beautiful home or large garden? Consider having the wedding there. Don’t forget to figure in the cost of renting tables and chairs. • Don’t forget the option of borrowing! Many recently-married friends may have items you can borrow to will cut costs.

HoneymooN planning how-to ith all the work that goes into planning a wedding, it can be easy for couples to overlook their own honeymoons. But in the middle of all those seating arrangements and reception hall negotiations, couples also need to plan and look forward to the rest and relaxation that awaits once the wedding has come and gone. Couples can take the following advice to ensure their getaway goes off without a hitch. • Be budget-conscious. After all the stress of planning and paying for the wedding, couples will likely just enjoy the time away. Take this into consideration when planning a honeymoon. If a dream trip isn’t in the budget, don’t fret. A less expensive getaway is still a getaway, and couples will enjoy their welldeserved break no matter where it is. • Plan an off-season honeymoon. That dream honeymoon might be affordable after all, if couples can wait until it’s not the height of tourist season. Most weddings occur dur-
W
ing the summer months, when tourist season is in full swing. Couples who can put off their honeymoon until the off-season will find their dream honeymoon is much more affordable. • Start early. The earlier couples begin to research destinations, the better feel they will have for what they can and can’t afford. But don’t book any flights or make any reservations too far in advance. The best deals are often available a few months before the trip. • Spread the news that you’re newlyweds. Hotels love hosting newlyweds, and many will upgrade rooms for recently married guests. Couples should not be too brash about it, though, as fully booked hotels won’t be able to upgrade their guests. • Think outside the box. When asked about a dream honeymoon, couples will often bring up Hawaii or even Paris. While those are beautiful places, they’re also expensive. Fortunately, there are a bevy of locales that aren’t nearly as pricey, but will still make for a honeymoon getaway that won’t soon be forgotten. (MS)

Most Popular Honeymoon & Vacation Destinations For many couples a honeymoon is just as important as the wedding ceremony. These couples seek the best in a vacation destination – and understandably so after surviving the stress of planning a wedding. Here are some of the top spots for honeymoon destinations. • Hawaii: This group of islands consistently ranks as one of the most popular honeymoon destinations. Once outside the tourist areas, there are plenty of places for serene reflection and one-to-one privacy. With its mountainous landscape, beautiful foliage and awe-inspiring ocean, the islands of Hawaii can be the perfect locale for honeymoon bliss. • Italy: Italy is the perfect marriage of Old World charm and modern conveniences. Honeymooners can pick from retreats in the country to cliffside resorts. • St. Lucia: St. Lucia is one of the Caribbean’s most lush islands. Picturesque plantations and lapping waters are just some of the attractions of this island paradise. • Tahiti: There’s something quite alluring about this South Pacific locale. Tahiti towers over the ocean with mountainous ridges but also lush, tropical areas. Tahiti is known for fine dining and plenty of water-based activities.
• Mexico: With close proximity to the United States, the tropical resorts of Mexico entice many honeymooners each year. • Jamaica: What better way to spend a honeymoon than on the laid-back tropical island of Jamaica? • France: True romantics may desire honeymooning in the city of romance: Paris. With spectacular sights, fine cuisine and many historical points of interest, France is often a top destination for couples. • Bermuda: This island is a British territory in North American waters. Bermuda’s nearest land mass is Cape Hatteras, N.C. Bermuda has a very affluent economy, with finance as its largest sector, followed by tourism. It is a popular cruise ship port of call. Sandy white beaches and close proximity to the U.S. make it a favorite for honeymoons. • U.S. Virgin Islands: If you want a tropical honeymoon getaway without the hassle of passport travel, consider the islands of St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix. It is surrounded by pristine waters and spectacular ocean life, so honeymooners who want fun in the sun need not look any further. • South Africa: Experience aweinspiring wildlife on safari or modern cities and exclusive neighborhoods. Beautiful Wedding Day
Tresses
hat bride doesn’t want to be heads above the rest in terms of her wedding day ‘do? The trouble is, many brides-to-be don’t take adequate steps to ensure their wedding day tresses will be up to par, including doing a practice run and being confident with their stylists. While your hair may look picture-perfect in your mind, getting through the wedding day with hair intact takes some time and effort – and the planning process doesn’t start a week before the wedding, either.
W
Start early Once you know your wedding date and have the venues booked, start shopping around for a stylist that you’ll stick with through your wedding day. You want to make sure this person is in consistent charge of your look, tailoring haircuts and coloring appointments toward the end goal.
Set a schedule Certain hair tasks should occur at specific times. For example, your final color should be done at least two weeks before the wedding to allow for color blending. A final trim should be around the same time also so that your hair hasn’t just been snipped. You’ll want haircuts at regular intervals, even if you’re growing your hair out for the wedding, to make sure it looks healthy.
Do your research Browse through magazines and make a look book of styles you like. Discuss with your stylist if they will complement your facial structure, style, hair type, and wedding gown. Talk about the venue and what will be expected of your hair. If you’ll be on the beach with blowing wind, a tight up-do might not be practical.

Weddings by the Numbers
Have a hair rehearsal Schedule a rehearsal of your wedding day hairdo with your stylist after you come up with a look that’s agreed upon. Not only will this help your stylist get his or her technique down pat, it’ll enable both of you to fine tune what works and what doesn’t. You can also get a feel for your hair so there won’t be any surprises once you are ready to walk down the aisle. Make sure to bring your veil with you and make-up your face so you’ll get an accurate view of the finished product. Take pictures from all angles to ensure that you’re happy with the look from every direction. Remember, you’ll be photographed coming and going, in action and at rest, during the wedding.
Pack reinforcements Some brides opt to invite their stylist to the reception hall for a few touch-ups between venues. If this isn’t an option, ask what products to bring along and how you can repair any minor flyaways, etc.
Put it in perspective Remember, just like everything that you’re planning for your wedding, while you hope things go on without a hitch, there may be some snags along the way. Remain calm and go with the flow. Guests are more apt to remember the joyous tone of the day rather than minute details that could frazzle you – like an errant bobby pin or a pull in your stockings. Wedding Day
Transportation Options Abound ouples have many decisions to make regarding their wedding ceremony and reception. One of those decisions concerns transportation to and from the special event. There are many options in wedding transportation. The more traditional options include renting a car or limousine. The Bridal Association of America reports that the average couple spends $400 to $500 for an automotive rental. However, prices may vary depending on geography and the type of vehicle rented. Wedding transportation is perhaps something grooms-to-be can get excited about. After all, we’re talking about cars – some fancy, some large, and many decked out with different fea-
C
tures. Plus, it’s traditionally the responsibility of the groom to arrange transportation to and from the ceremony, reception and the hotel or honeymoon destination. Grooms responsible for arranging transportation can consider the following options.
Limousine: A limo is one of the most traditional methods of transport on a couple’s wedding day. A limousine’s size enables it to carry the bridal party in its entirety. Because the bride and groom often do not see each other before the ceremony, two limos may be rented, one larger for the bridal party, and one smaller for the bride and her parents, depending on personal preference.

Classic car: Sports car enthusiasts may want to make an entrance – and exit – behind the wheel of a sporty vehicle. These can include a high-end Ferrari or an Aston Martin. Because of their high purchase price, sports car rentals may carry a premium price. Stretch SUV: The traditional limo has morphed into the stretch SUV. Because of their popularity, these rentals may be snatched up quickly. Be sure to book well in advance of the big day. Party Bus: Many couples are leaning toward a party bus rental, which may be a single- or double-decker bus that can fit scores of people inside. These are particularly attractive to couples with a very large bridal party, or those who hope to begin the celebration even before reaching the reception hall. Horse-drawn carriage: Some couples truly want the fairytale feel on their wedding day. A horse-drawn carriage can evoke feelings of a Cinderella-type day. The carriage tends to be best suited to warm weather. For winter weddings, a horse-drawn sleigh might make a better alternative.
Motorcycle: Couples looking for excitement may want to ride off into the sunset on the back of a roadster or sports bike. Horses: Horses can haul more than just a carriage. A bride and groom atop a handsome steed can make for a memorable wedding transportation option and equally memorable photos. Boat: Individuals getting married by the sea or another body of water may want to consider attending the festivities via boat, be it a large vessel or a more intimate canoe or rowboat. Wedding day transportation varies depending on each couple’s preference. Here are some other things to keep in mind concerning transportation. • Be sure to have transportation options ready for guests who may have overindulged on alcoholic beverages. • Wedding party participants who arrived at the wedding by a limo or other source will need a ride home somehow. • Find out if a hotel nearby offers complementary transportation to and from the reception hall. Develop a wedding
floral plan eading up to their big day, couples have lots to worry about before they finally get to walk down the aisle as man and wife. Planning a wedding is no small task, as even the most minor details must be accounted for. Such is the case with the floral arrangements, particularly when it comes to the more individual aspects of a floral plan. For instance, the following components must be considered: • The bridal bouquet. It’s tradition for bridal bouquets to contain white or creamcolored flowers such as stephanotis, roses, orchids, or lilies. Many bridal bouquets also include fillers like baby’s breath, some green or ivy and ribbons or additional accessories. • Bouquets for attendants. Attendants’ bouquets should be identical, and it’s best to coordinate these bouquets with the attendants’ gowns. Only the maid of honor traditionally receives a slightly different bouquet, as it’s customary to give her one apart from
L
the rest, though not significantly so. • Boutonnieres for groomsmen and ushers. The guy’s side of the wedding also needs to be part in the floral plan. Worn in a buttonhole or lapel, a boutonniere should be on the left lapel and match a flower from the bridesmaids’ bouquet. The groom should also wear a boutonniere, though his should match a flower from the bride’s bouquet. When wearing boutonnieres, men should not wear additional accessories such as pocket squares. • Flowers for special guests. Certain special guests, such as grandmothers and mothers, should receive corsages. While the corsages do not need to be identical, they should match the bridesmaids’ bouquets. It’s best to consult with a florist for a corsage color that matches all dresses, as typically the corsages must be ordered before the bride and groom know what their mothers, grandmothers and other special guests will be wearing. A corsage that goes with anything, therefore, is ideal. - (MS)
