MANAGING MONEY 2

together

Among the many decisions newlyweds must make, one of the most important is money management. Here are some strategies for a successful money merger.

1

Honesty is the best policy. Along with trust

and honesty, open communication about finances is important. Each person needs to be aware of any assets or outstanding debts belonging to their spouse. It’s OK for couples to have separate accounts, but having joint checking, savings and credit card accounts creates transparency and requires couples to work together.

Make a plan. Create a budget you can stick

to that realistically reflects future spending. Decide who is going to have primary responsibility for writing checks or how you’re going to share them. Set a time to sit down together every month when it’s time to pay bills to talk about current and future spending so you’re on the same page.

3

Balance the bills. Most likely, couples merging

finances have different incomes and accumulated debt. Couples need to agree on how each person should contribute and to pay of past debts. Previous debts can be shared or remain with the spouse who accumulated them. Spending toward the household or things like vacations can be treated the same as other household expenses while personal purchases might be considered the responsibility of the individual.

rawing up a guest list for your wedding can be very stressful, especially when you start thinking about your extended family and your limited budget. What’s the best way to tackle this difficult job? Two options are available to you. First of all, you can list the names of all the people you would like to be present at your wedding, and adapt the reception or your budget accordingly. Obviously, the longer the list, the more costly it will be. Or, if you feel that the presence of all the people on your list is essential, there are ways of inviting everyone without breaking the bank. You could opt for a more affordable menu or a no-frills reception or a cash bar, for instance. You can also do the reverse. Choose the reception hall and determine your budget, then adjust your guest list accordingly. You’d love to get married in a specific place that can only accommodate 80 people? Compile your list according to your priorities until you reach the maximum number of guests. Start with family and close friends, then add extended family and friends, and end with acquaintances and colleagues if there is room. Don’t forget the spouses (and the children, if invited) of all these people. Whichever option you choose, keep in mind that it is your big day; don’t succumb to the pressure of inviting people you don’t really want to see. Instead, surround yourself with people who are important to you.

THE

Menu

The wedding meal – which takes up most of the evening as well as a large part of the budget – has to be chosen carefully. Here are some mouth-watering ideas that we hope will inspire you. The possibilities abound where wedding menus are concerned: banquet, barbecue, tapas, cocktail party, buffet, etc. Choose a formula and foods that are in line with your budget and your wedding theme. If you opt for a cocktail party, provide an area where guests can sit comfortably and high tables where they can put their glasses. Tapas have the advantage of being suitable for a variety of different serving styles, such as a sit-down dinner, as a buffet or for a cocktail party. When it comes to desserts, the wedding cake is definitely the star of the show. However, not everyone likes cake, so it’s always a good idea to give your guests a choice: cupcakes, a chocolate fountain, a dessert buffet, fruit carvings, pastry trays – anything goes. Want to offer a little “extra” to your guests? To serve a wider variety of dishes, add a grill for stir-fries, or set up a candy or chocolate bar for the enjoyment of young and old alike. You could also have a sundae bar or a lemonade bar to refresh your guests on a hot summer’s day. Whatever type of menu you opt for, be sure to take all your guests into consideration. Do you have a menu that children will like or menu choices suitable for people with food allergies? Your guests will appreciate your kind attention to their needs.

An outdoor wedding? Be prepared

Are you dreaming of a wedding in the sunshine and a reception under the stars? For your big day to be as magical as you’d hoped, you’re going to have to think of everything beforehand.

The layout of the site

Choose an easily accessible area that is as flat as possible to avoid wobbly tables or runoff if it rains. Also, be sure to notify any neighbors of your plans so they can be respectful of your need for a peaceful atmosphere.

The weather

Don’t bury your head in the sand; the weather could thwart your plans in lots of different ways. Choose heavy decorations that will stay in place if it gets windy. A warm, sunny day would be fantastic, but a heat wave could make your guests feel really uncomfortable. For a summer wedding, make sure you have some shady corners, parasols and cold refreshments. In case of rain, a marquis tent or other shelter is essential for guests, musicians and caterers. Be sure to organize a supply of umbrellas at the entrance, as well as mats and towels. The evening could be cool, so providing shawls or blankets for your guests is also a good idea. And don’t forget that mosquitoes could turn up at the party uninvited; it’s another thing to think about and prepare for.

The facilities

Toilets, water and electricity: Do you have everything you

need? The caterers may need to rent a refrigerated truck, so be sure to let them know which facilities will be at their disposal. Set up a sturdy dance floor as well for all those ladies in stiletto heels. Next comes some ambient lighting: strings of fairy lights, candles with covers for the flames and lanterns will set the mood. And don’t forget to light the paths to the toilets and parking area. Make sure you plan enough time and helping hands to set everything up. Transforming a backyard into an idyllic reception area isn’t something that can be done overnight. You want the most amazing wedding possible? Working with experienced professionals will help you make sure that everything is perfect on the big day.

To look beautiful

Makeup artist, hairstylist, beautician, manicurist – make an appointment now to be breathtakingly beautiful on your big day. Don’t forget to plan test sessions to ensure that the results live up to your expectations.

For a great atmosphere

Who will get your guests out on the dance floor: an orchestra, a string ensemble, a brass quintet or a DJ? For a successful evening, hire musicians and an emcee as soon as possible. Don’t forget the reception hall; a decorator will be able to set the tone for the evening.

partner with wedding professionals

A mouth-watering feast

You’ll need to feed your guests, of course, so which caterer will you do business with? This professional can suggest different formulas and menus depending on your budget and the type of wedding reception you want. A talented pastry chef will take into account your tastes and your theme and make a cake as beautiful as it is delicious.

To immortalize the big day

Don’t leave your wedding photos to chance; after all, you’ll want to keep them for the rest of your life. Take a look at the portfolios of several photographers before deciding which one will create these beautiful memories for you. If you want to be able to relive the highlights of this special day, hire a videographer as well. You’re rushed off your feet with your busy schedule and a wedding to organize? A wedding planner will be able to give you all the help you need and ensure that everything is perfect on your big day.

Choosing the site of your

reception

It’s time to choose a location for your reception. Are you thinking hotel, country inn or cruise boat? A marquee tent, community hall or vineyard? Orchard, art gallery or golf club? There are so many great places to celebrate your wedding that it can be difficult to make a choice. Here are some things you should consider.

1

The wedding theme. The chosen location must be suitable for the theme without requiring a huge makeover; otherwise your budget could explode. Find out about decorating possibilities as well.

2 3

The capacity. Make sure the chosen place can comfortably accommodate all your guests.

The meal. Is there a caterer on site? Can you choose a different one? Can you personalize the menu? Think about drinks: Is there a liquor license? Can you bring your

own wine or if it’s a vineyard, are you limited to certain products?

4

Access and overnight accommodation. Is there enough parking? Is it free? Is the reception hall close to where the ceremony will take place? Are there hotels nearby?

5

Equipment. What’s included? Are dishes, chairs and tablecloths provided or do you need to rent some? Is all the necessary sound and lighting equipment provided? You’ll need to take into consideration everything that is not included in the rental price to calculate your budget. Don’t hesitate to ask questions. Is there a music curfew? Is the dance floor accessible at all times? Who is responsible for cleaning up after the party? One last thing: Be sure to reserve as soon as you’ve made your choice, as your date may not be available for long.

Creating

atmosphere

is the secret to your reception

What makes one wedding more fun than another? There’s no need to look far: The secret is in the atmosphere. Here are some tips on how to organize a memorable wedding reception.

The theme

Begin by choosing the theme of the wedding. This will guide you through your clothing and decorating choices, and it even determines the wedding favors you offer and the meal the caterer serves. The theme can be a color or combination of colors, an era or a season, a country or a culture, an object or a shared passion. Above all, it should reflect both your personalities.

Entertainment and music

If you hire an entertainer along with your DJ or musicians, you’ll have more fun at your own wedding. You’ll both be able to circulate among your guests, and there won’t be any uncomfortable lulls. A good DJ is a facilitator who can adapt to the age and tastes of the guests and keep the momentum going.

Some ideas for surprising your guests

Photos by Timeless Moments Photography

• Set up a photo booth with wacky accessories. • Provide a guest book that can be a decorative item in your home after the reception. • Have a karaoke machine for later on, at the reception. • Release disposable lanterns into the sky when it gets dark, or plan some fireworks. • Serve custom cocktails, poured by a professional flair bartender who can juggle bottles and do some spectacular bartending tricks.

Does your wedding have a

D

o you dream of a fairy tale wedding? A party that features vibrating disco rhythms? Or a cultural-themed wedding? If you haven’t chosen a theme yet, that’s OK. But if you’d like a little pizzazz on your big day, choosing one will certainly help.

A common thread

Organize your wedding with a specific theme in order to have a common thread throughout all the elements. That includes centerpieces, decorations, bride and groom outfits, menu, reception hall and music – the possibilities are endless. A theme also helps you choose from among all the ideas you’re thinking

theme?

of, not to mention that your suppliers will be able to make more appropriate suggestions. You don’t need to choose an extravagant theme; you can simply choose a color that sets the tone for your wedding, from the flowers to the bridesmaids’ dresses, cake, invitations and wedding favors. You’d like a more elaborate theme? Think about something you both like. It can be an era, a country, a passion, a decorative style or a mood. You might also be inspired by the season of your wedding or by the reception hall. In fact, the hall should be taken into consideration when choosing the theme, and vice versa – let’s just say that organizing a wedding with a Western theme in a fancy hotel could pose a few problems. And don’t forget to make sure that your theme fits with the budget that you’ve set. So, will your wedding theme be coral and lime green, eco-friendly, disco, medieval?

connected is

The bride and groom of 2016 are likely to be digitally connected, using social networks and Internet throughout their daily lives. And it’s not because their wedding day is fast approaching that they’ll shut down their computers! Social networks such as Twitter and Facebook are now an integral part of everyday life for many young people. It is easy to combine these modern methods with more traditional wedding preparations. Social network sites can be used to send invitations and reminders and also to express mood. For themed weddings especially, small “nibbles” of information can be sent, little hints to let guests know more about the ceremony. Steer them in the right direction about the dress code or ask them for music suggestions. Post photos and video clips featuring the bride- and groom-to-be and let your friends and guests have a great time commenting on them.

Many future couples create a blog, recounting the organization of their wedding from start to finish. For the uninitiated, a blog is like a private diary that is made public or opened to select friends on the Internet. In fact, many wedding blogs can be found online these days. They are useful for other future couples, as everyone shares advice on how to organize a successful wedding. Perhaps the most useful application of the Internet in wedding planning, brides-to-be can post their wedding gift lists online. This makes it easier for guests to know the needs and tastes of the couple.

tips

for a great honeymoon

A

couple’s honeymoon is their first real chance to relax and unwind after the hustle and bustle of wedding planning. Couples who want to make sure their first getaway as husband and wife goes off without a hitch might want to heed the following advice.

1

Start saving early. Honeymoons are expensive, so it’s wise to begin saving as early as possible. It may be well worth it to compromise and make sacrifices in other areas to ensure you have enough funds for your dream honeymoon getaway. Do not expect cash gifts at your wedding to pay for your trip. If you do, you may be sorely disappointed when the time comes to take off.

2

Read online reviews. Online reviews can paint an accurate picture of a potential honeymoon destination. Look at vacationer-supplied photographs to see how the accommodations match up to the resort’s own marketing materials. You don’t want too many surprises to ruin your trip.

Metro Creative Graphics

3

Plan at least one exciting outing. Try an activity you have never done before, such as snorkeling, traveling a zip line or swimming with stingrays.

4

Pack early. After a long wedding day and reception spent dancing into the wee hours of the morning, you probably do not want to spend time packing. Pack your suitcases and travel essentials in advance of your wedding day so you have more time to sleep in before you depart for the airport. Also, remember not to over-pack. You want to have room for the souvenirs you purchase along the way.

5

Enjoy your surroundings. Put down the smartphone or tablet enough to truly enjoy your surroundings. A honeymoon is an opportunity to relax, and that may not be possible if you’re tied to your devices. Friends at home can wait for your status updates and wedding pictures.

6 7

Splurge on something expensive. Whether it’s an ultra-fancy dinner or an exotic souvenir, indulge.

Leave your itinerary open. After scores of wedding appointments and watching the clock, it’s nice to fly by the seat of your pants.

How to IMMORTALIZE

YOUR WEDDING

Y

our wedding is going to be overflowing with meaningful gestures: bountiful affection, tender gazes, knowing smiles shared between the two of you, not to mention the kiss that seals your vows. Weddings are filled with a panoply of intimate moments that you’ll want to capture for posterity. If it’s documented well, it’ll be an exciting day that you can live and relive, over and over again.

A few clicks of the shutter

Make sure the best moments of your wedding are captured by a professional photographer who knows how to be unobtrusive. But what if the weather’s bad and the lighting in the hall is terrible? Don’t panic; a photo session can be scheduled a few days before or after the wedding. A good photographer will know how to immortalize your union in an unusual and stunning way, worthy of a glossy magazine. With a photo booth and a few accessories at the reception, your guests can also pose for posterity. A few crazy snapshots will definitely help them remember the event. You can even ask your guests to send you a few of their favorite photos that they took during the festivities.

A wedding filmed from every angle

Guest interviews, staging, backstage cameras at the ceremony: It sounds like Hollywood! A wedding videographer will trace the history of this unique day as if it were a movie. You’ll be filmed from the moment you start your wedding preparations with your bridesmaids, making the final product a treat for all the people you love. So, would you like a wedding album or a movie? Why not both!

What a bride wants:

Favored choices for bachelorette parties

A

s a rite of passage, the bachelorette party has long gotten a bum rap. Stereotypes persist of the bride’s night-before-the-wedding gathering as a ladies-only version of the raucous bachelor party. Yet the truth is, a growing number of brides crave a tasteful, relaxing and personal send-off for their single days. In fact, a relaxing getaway ranked high as an ideal bachelorette party for 59 percent of brides-to-be in the Ultimate Bridesmaids Census. Sixty-seven percent wanted dinner, dancing and time spent with their closest friends, and 23 percent wanted something non-traditional that really reflected their personal interests. “Bachelorette parties are as unique as the women they celebrate,” says Michael Belot, general manager of Destination Kohler – home to AAA five-diamond and Forbes five-star hotel that hosts scores of brides, bridesmaids and weddings each year. “We’re seeing an emphasis on relaxation for the bride and companionship with her friends in today’s bachelorette parties.”

So what are the things that brides and bridesmaids tell the Destination Kohler team they must have for their bachelorette soirees? Belot points to five in-demand elements:

1

Spa time

Whether it’s a group mani-pedi, a yoga class or a lunch of delicious, healthful spa cuisine, bachelorette groups crave spa time. Parties are looking for spas that offer a comprehensive list of salon services, familiar and new massages and body treatments, and easy access to luxury accommodations. For example, bachelorette groups often book rooms in the Carriage House, which is located above the Forbes fivestar Kohler Waters Spa. Participants can spend the day in their spa robes if they choose. “Kohler Waters Spa is by far the most popular request and activity among bachelorette parties, and is often the center of the trip,” says Garrett Mersberger, manager of Kohler Waters Spas. Playing to this trend, many resorts have created female-centric spa packages like the Girls Getaway.

2

Great food

Forget the pigs in a blanket, deviled eggs and other foods long associated with bridal showers. Modern bachelorette groups are looking for dining options that are luxurious and delicious, or that accommodate needs such as gluten-free or low-calorie diets. Spa fare often fits well with this preference. Resorts with multiple dining options afford bachelorette guests the opportunity to dine lightly for lunch and then enjoy a more indulgent dinner.

3

Bonding activities

Hitting the bar and dancing the night away are no longer the only bonding activities for bachelorette groups. From yoga classes and golf outings to wine and chocolate pairings, brides-to-be are looking for more diverse, sophisticated activities they can do with their girlfriends.

4

“Away from it all”

Nearly a third of respondents in the Bridesmaid Census said they didn’t want to go crazy for a bachelorette party, they just wanted to enjoy time with their friends. Perhaps it’s because their lives are about to change dramatically. Maybe

it’s a need to reaffirm the girlfriend bond that has seen them through life’s ups and downs to reach this happy point in their lives. Whatever their reasons, a growing number of brides are looking for a bachelorette experience that transports them and their closest friends far away from their daily routines. Some fulfill this wish by choosing a resort location far from home. Others may choose accommodations that are more intimate.

5

Personalization

Twenty-three percent of surveyed brides said they wanted a bachelorette party that was deeply personal and tailored to their individual tastes and interests. For some, that’s a spa experience. For others, a golf getaway. Even when they’ve booked a bachelorette package, brides and their bridesmaids are looking for ways the resort can customize their experience. Add-ons are popular, from spa treatments to wine tastings. ridesmaids, mothers of the bride and groom, flower girl: How should all these people dress in order to create a harmonious wedding party? Should the bridesmaids all wear the same style of dress? And what about matching colors? The bridesmaids The bridesmaid dresses should blend in with the wedding colors but not with the tablecloths. In other words, be inspired by the decor, but don’t replicate it. Even better, for everyone to feel comfortable, avoid imposing one particular dress on your bridesmaids, unless they all have the same figure and enthusiasm for the idea.

Instead, think about choosing a color, fabric and basic style of dress and allowing each bridesmaid to choose the model that suits her best. This way the visual harmony of the wedding party will be maintained while you still have beautifully unique bridesmaids. Note that specialty stores offer collections of different dresses cut from the same fabric. The mothers of the bride and groom The mother of the bride plays an important role on the big day, and it is essential to differentiate her from the bridesmaids. This can be done especially with the color of her dress. Her outfit could take into account the main colors of the wedding party and blend in with them; however the style of her dress is always her own choice. When choosing her outfit, the groom’s mother’s goal should be to harmonize so as not to look the odd one out in the wedding photos. The flower girl The little flower girl, walking down the aisle in front of the bride, is usually dressed in white. She’ll love wearing her perfect little princess dress! Groom’s

Wedding Planner Checklist The bride is not the only one with planning to do! Take care of these before the big day:

6-12 months before

4 months before

 Purchase the bride’s engagement ring.  Discuss with fiancée the date and type of wedding.  Start on your guest list.  Choose best man and ushers.  Start planning and making necessary arrangements for the honeymoon.  Discuss and plan, with fiancée, your new home together. If fiancée is moving in with you, start cleaning out closets, cupboards and drawers to make room for your bride and wedding gifts.

 Shop with fiancée for wedding rings.  Complete your guest list, including full names, addresses and ZIP codes with phone numbers.  Check requirements for blood test and marriage license in your state or the state in which you are being married.  Select and order men’s wedding attire with your fiancée.  Finalize all honeymoon plans and send in deposits if required (don’t delay – some resorts fill up fast in popular months).

Don’t forget to honor the groomsmen

W

eddings are all about the brides, or so it would seem. While all eyes are on the bride, the groom sometimes goes unnoticed. One person who shouldn’t fail to notice the groomsmen is the groom himself. Groomsmen can and often do have significant responsibilities. A good groom should recognize the efforts of his groomsmen and give gifts as an acknowledgement of their efforts. Following are some gift ideas:

Commemorate the reception.

Men tend to focus on the celebratory aspects of the day. Grooms can give a personalized gift as a means of commemorating the day.

Back to the bachelor party.

These days, weekend getaways are a common theme to many bachelor parties. Consider gifts that evoke memories of that special weekend where you were the guest of honor.

Go the more fanciful route.

For grooms whose wedding will be an elegant affair, celebrate that elegance by giving each of your groomsmen an engraved pocket watch. (MS)

24 Wedding Planner 2016

2 months before  Meet with officiant to finalize ceremony details.  Assist parents with plans for the rehearsal dinner party.  Discuss the amount and the financial arrangement for the flowers that are the groom’s responsibility.  Arrange accommodations for out-of-town attendants.

1 month before  See that all attendants have been fitted and wedding attire has been ordered.  Purchase gifts for best man and ushers.  Purchase wedding gifts for fiancée, if gifts are being exchanged.  Pick up wedding rings. Make sure they fit.  Take care of business and legal affairs (add bride’s name to insurance policies and medical plans, make a new will, add her name to joint checking account or joint charge cards).  If you have both agreed to a pre-nuptial agreement, have it drawn up and signed.

 Reconfirm accommodations for out-of-town guests.  If moving, give change of address card to post office; arrange to have utilities and phone service turned on in new home. If not moving, finish cleaning and reorganizing your home; help your fiancee move her things.  Have your hair cut.

1 week before  Discuss all final details with fiancée; offer to assist if needed.  Pick up and try on wedding attire.  See that attendants get their wedding attire.  Pack clothes for honeymoon.  Reconfirm all honeymoon reservations.  If flying, make sure you have plane tickets.  See to it that you and your attendants are at the rehearsal and that they know their duties.  Go over special seating or pew cards with ushers.  Make sure luggage is in the car or the hotel where you will stay your first night.  Attend rehearsal dinner.  Relax and enjoy yourself. Notes:

2 weeks before  Together with fiancée, gather necessary documents and get your marriage license.  Arrange wedding day transportation.

Gift ideas to thank your guests Gourmet, eco-friendly, original, unusual – there’s no lack of choices when searching for the perfect wedding favor for your guests. Your small gesture will go a long way in thanking them for being with you on one of the most important days of your life. But despite all the choices, choosing the right favor is never an easy task. Here are a few ideas to point you in the right direction. Start by setting your budget; this will narrow down your choices and save you time. Then think about the theme of your wedding, if you have one. You could have pretty candles for a romantic wedding, a small cactus for an eco-friendly or exotic wedding, wine glasses for a wedding reception at a vineyard, packs of cards for a wedding with a Las Vegas theme – the possibilities are endless if you use your imagination. There are gourmet treats (truffles, candies, jams), decorative trinkets

(photo frames, magnets, vases) and useful objects (coasters, fans, notepads). You could give a shortlived gift, such as a box of cookies, or an object that your loved ones will be able to keep as a souvenir for a long time. Don’t forget that the gifts should include the date of the wedding and both your names. And get some colored pencils, lollipops or soap bubbles to treat your younger guests. Go window shopping and search through some specialized stores to find inspiration. You could also ask friends or family which favors they prefer among those they’ve received at other weddings. Also, think about what you would like to be given if you were a guest, and then add your personal touch. After all, your gifts should reflect your personality. So, bath salts, coffee, a travel diary – what will you be giving your guests?

Remember those

who make your day special

It is customary for the bride- and groom-to-be to show their gratitude to the people who make their wedding day special. Thank-you gifts should be something thoughtful and enduring. These are customarily given at the rehearsal dinner. Crafting personalized remarks is a nice way to call attention to the unique tasks of each participant. Don’t simply pass the gifts out in one fell swoop. The gift will have more meaning through a personal message.

honor with a more lavish gift. Younger bridal party members can get a similar gift in scale with their ages. Clergy Many couples choose to make a financial donation to their house of worship. Additional tipping or monetary gifts for musicians, altar boys/girls, etc. can be a thoughtful gesture. A donation toward an officiant’s vestments may also be appreciated.

Groomsmen When selecting gifts for groomsmen, think about a gift they would like, but probably wouldn’t buy themselves. This can be cuff links, a fine watch, a money clip, or a high-quality wallet. Feel free to splurge a little more on the best man.

Parents of the bride and groom The couple may choose to bestow a gift on their parents, which can be especially meaningful if the parents are taking care of the financial responsibility of the wedding. Consider engraved picture frames that can house a wedding portrait down the road.

Bridesmaids Traditional gifts are jewelry, monogrammed stationery or a spa treatment. As you have with the best man, feel free to bestow more thanks on the maid of

Others Readers, soloists, ushers and others can be given a small token of your appreciation, like a gift card or a personalized memento.

Be smart about beauty preparation

A

ll eyes are on the bride and groom on their wedding day. Feeling beautiful and dapper can boost a couple’s confidence and ensure they look back on their wedding photographs and videos with pride. Certain beauty basics and makeup and hair strategies can help any bride look spectacular on her wedding day. The following are some dos and don’ts of wedding day beauty preparations.

DO employ the services of a professional hairstylist and makeup artist. Professionals have the experience and tools of the trade to help you to look your best. From contouring to make your face seem slimmer to enlarging the appearance of small eyes, some tricks of the trade are best left to the pros. DON’T forget to schedule a trial run. Make this appointment several months before the wedding day so you have ample time to work with your stylists and experiment with colors and hair arrangements to fit your personality and the style of your gown. Take plenty of pictures and notes so you will remember what needs to be on hand for the wedding day. DO allot enough time for the wedding day beauty appointment. If you will be going to a salon, block out two or more slots instead of one. This way the stylist does not overbook and will not feel rushed. Many brides opt to have stylists come to their homes. There may be an extra charge for this service, but it may be well worth the cost. DON’T make any drastic changes to your appearance right before the wedding. This includes changing your hair color or texture, extreme tanning, using colored contact lenses, or chopping off all of your hair. It’s better to wait until after the wedding to change your style. DO bring a veil, headpiece, hair extensions, and any other accessories to your hair consult. This enables the stylist to practice working with these items. DON’T tweeze or wax brows too close to the start of the ceremony. Redness and swelling are common side effects of tweezing and waxing, and they can be difficult to mask with makeup. Instead, take care of hair removal a day or two prior to the wedding.

DON’T wash or condition hair the day of the wedding. Intricate styles tend to stay better when hair has a little grip. “Dirty” hair is easier to work with than shiny, freshly washed locks. If you must wash, remember to thoroughly dry your hair before going to your appointment.

We have a great selection of engagement rings and wedding bands

DO wear a little extra makeup than you are accustomed to wearing because it will show up better in photos. However, do not wear so much that you look clownish. A makeup artist can help you achieve the right balance.

DO exfoliate your skin prior to the wedding. This doesn’t necessarily mean you should endure a harsh fruit acid peel or another procedure. You can exfoliate with a gentle washing of your skin with a nubby washcloth to remove any dryness and errant flakes. Moisturize well to ensure a smooth palette for makeup application.

DON’T have bridesmaids wear makeup that is bolder than yours, especially red lips. No one should upstage the bride. DO experiment with any products you haven’t used before to test for allergic reactions and see how well they wear. Thinkstock

Maid of honor

has an important role

The role of the maid of honor can turn into a dress rehearsal for the day when it is her turn to be the bride. The bride’s maid of honor typically has a close personal relationship with the bride and often serves as confidant and advisor on a variety of issues. Preparations can include selecting wedding colors; choosing the bridesmaid dresses, the caterer and flowers; identifying a location for the wedding and reception; and hosting a bridal shower. This position of honor can be loaded with a lot of work and responsibility as well as a lot of fun. Typical maid-of-honor duties include shopping with the bride, arranging transportation for the bridal party, communicating plans and responsibilities to the bridal party, helping with wedding invitations, ensuring the bridal party gets to rehearsals on time, helping during the rehearsal dinner and other

events, and making sure the reception runs smoothly. She also has official duties such as signing the marriage license along with the best man and participating in the first dance with the best man, holding the groom’s ring during the ceremony, holding the bride’s bouquet during the ceremony and toasting the newlyweds during the reception. Then there are the tender tasks of helping to prepare the bride just before her grand march down the aisle by fixing her hair, adjusting the veil and wiping tears to avoid smudging makeup, along with the tedious task of helping to keep track of the wedding gifts and money cards. On top of all that, the best maid of honor must be a good listener in order to provide the necessary emotional support the bride needs leading up to and the day of the wedding, as she prepares for the start of her new life. The Perfect

wedding band to tie the knot

S

ince time immemorial, wedding bands have symbolized the continuity of marriage. Legend has it that a wedding ring is customarily worn on the left ring finger because of the vena amoris, or “vein of love.” It was thought to have a uniquely direct connection to the heart. We know today that all the fingers have similar privileges, but your choice of wedding ring is still as important as ever. After all, you’re hoping that it will adorn your ring finger until death do you part. Your tastes, your gender, and especially your budget are the main factors to consider in choosing the right band. The metal Gold. Whether it’s yellow, pink, or white, gold is always a safe bet. The price varies according to the number of Karats (abbreviated by K or kt). Platinum. This metal is attractive and very durable, but more expensive.

Titanium. It’s less expensive and doesn’t scratch or fade, but it isn’t as shiny as gold or platinum. Silver. This is typically the most affordable option, but pure silver oxidizes over time. Discretion vs. extravagance You might enjoy having a ring that’s striated, bejeweled, or engraved with a personal message from your beloved. There’s nothing to stop you from being creative and commissioning tailor-made wedding bands from your jeweler. Men typically prefer to opt for discretion and comfort; jewelry without gemstones is less fragile and thus more popular with them. And even though rings are available in an endless range of possibilities, most women still choose diamonds, which are, of course, forever.
