Realize the wedding of your dreams with

PLANNING here are a few things about weddings that cannot be predicted or controlled, such as what Mother Nature will do. However, there are many things within the control of the bride and groom. Proper planning can help ensure the wedding of their dreams. One of the best ways to ease wedding-day nerves is for the couple to get organized and begin planning their event the moment the engagement period begins. The earlier preparation starts, the better the chance that vendors will be able to provide what’s needed, or that changes can be made when unforeseen events pop up. By making a list of things to do, couples can allot time in their schedules for each task, and they can feel a sense of accomplishment and relief each time an item is checked off the list.

T

Decide on a date. Couples should select a date for their wedding soon after becoming engaged. After all, it is the countdown to this day that will help organize and determine planning schedules. Reserve a ceremony location. Traditional weddings take place in a house of worship. It’s best to meet with a pastor, rabbi or other officiant to see if the ceremony site will be available. This person will also help guide couples

Come relax in Bella’s elegant atmosphere..

through religious requirements needed prior to getting married there, as well as any rules and regulations for the ceremony site. Book a reception site. After securing the ceremony location, couples will have peace of mind knowing they can now book the place where their party will take place. This may be a catering hall, hotel, cruise ship or even someone’s backyard. Sometimes the ceremony site is also the reception site. Catering directors are typically on hand to talk about pricing and options. They work closely with the couple to plan and execute the reception. Select a photographer. Photographers tend to book quickly, particularly if they are well recommended. It pays to research and choose one early in the wedding-planning process. Every photographer has a different style. The couple should select one who will not only be accommodating to their wishes, but who will also suggest ideas that may not have been considered. The photographer’s personality is important. He or she will be spending the entire day with the couple and should be likable and personable. Couples should also find out if the photographer they speak with at the studio will be the one shooting the wedding.

Book a band or DJ Another vendor that tends to have a busy schedule will be the wedding entertainer. Early booking ensures your date will be available. Couples should talk about musical selections and the ways to engage the various generations attending the reception. Choose a florist. Flowers add an elegant touch to the wedding day. A florist will often provide flowers for both the ceremony and the reception. The couple should select a florist who offers them helpful, creative ideas about bouquets, corsages and centerpieces – and who will deliver in a timely manner. Select and order dresses. Wedding and bridesmaid gowns can take several months to order and be tailored. It can also take some trial and error finding a dress shop that meets the needs of a bride and her attendants. So it’s best if this fun part of wedding planning is done early. While there are no set rules for gown selection, it may help if the bride and her attendants use the same shop so that styles will be complementary and service and alterations can be organized with minimal fuss. Order invitations. With a bevy of styles of invitations there will be many ideas to consider. Couples should leave ample time to look through sample books or do research on the Internet. They should decide on a style that best suits their wedding, based on its formality, the time of day and the wedding colors. Choose transportation. Many couples forget to factor limousine or car rentals into their wedding-day plans. Whether it’s a limo, Rolls, horse-drawn car-

Timeless Moments Photography

riage, or a party bus, the bride and groom should arrange for transportation for themselves and their attendants to and from the church and reception site. Find formal wear. Tuxedo rentals are quite popular for weddings. If the wedding is taking place during a peak party season, such as prom time, it pays for couples to reserve tuxes several months in advance of the wedding. All of the groomsmen should rent from the same shop to be uniform. With these important decisions made, the bride- and groom-tobe have only a few things left to do as their wedding draws nearer. This includes selecting wedding favors, addressing the invitations and purchasing thank-you gifts for their wedding party. –(MS)

Maid of honor has important role he role of the maid of honor can turn into a dress rehearsal for the day when it is her turn to be the bride. The bride’s maid of honor typically has a close personal relationship with the bride and often serves as confidant and advisor on a variety of issues. Preparations can include selecting wedding colors; choosing the bridesmaid dresses, the caterer and flowers; identifying a location for the wedding and reception; and hosting a bridal shower. This position of honor can be loaded with a lot of work and responsibility as well as a lot of fun. Typical maid-of-honor duties include shopping with the bride, arranging transportation for the bridal party, communicating plans and responsibilities to the bridal party, helping with wedding invitations, ensuring the bridal party gets to rehearsals on time, helping during the rehearsal dinner and other events, and making sure the reception runs smoothly. She also has official duties such as signing the marriage license along with the best man

T

and participating in the first dance with the best man, holding the groom’s ring during the ceremony, holding the bride’s bouquet during the ceremony and toasting the newlyweds during the reception. Then there are the tender tasks of helping to prepare the bride just before her grand march down the aisle by fixing her hair, adjusting the veil and wiping tears to avoid smudging makeup, along with the tedious task of helping to keep track of the wedding gifts and money cards. Lest we forget, the toughest task for the maid of honor is the unofficial duty of keeping the bride calm, being a sounding board for the bride and offering thoughtful opinions when major decisions are being made. There is also the responsibility of keeping the bride calm the day of the wedding when nerves and anxiety will be at their peak. On top of all that, the best maid of honor must be a good listener in order to provide the necessary emotional support the bride needs leading up to and the day of the wedding, as she prepares for the start of her new life. –(ARA)

Dress shopping should be fun, not stressful W omen dream of the day they shop for their wedding gown. But the experience that is expected to bring multitudes of joy and be nothing but fun can sometimes turn out quite the opposite. It could bring frustration and stress. Here are some tips to make the experience all you’ve ever dreamed it should be: • Before shopping, spend time looking through bridal magazines. Mark styles that catch your eye. Take these with when you go shopping. • Plan a day to do nothing but shop for that one special dress. Make it fun. Include a special family member or friend and enjoy each other’s company. Be

sure to have a plan – list what shops you’d like to visit, etc. But don’t schedule yourself too tightly – you don’t want the stress that comes from falling off schedule. • Take your time to look at different styles. One idea is while you try on one style, let your friends or family members try on other styles so you can see what they look like without you having to dress and undress so many times. Once you’ve got it narrowed down, then you can try your favorites on yourself. • Be open-minded. You may think you know exactly what you want, but you may be surprised that once you try on a dress in that style it isn’t what you envisioned. Be

open to looking at styles you may not have considered before. Also, be open-minded to those helping you. Don’t be offended if someone tells you a style isn’t right for you. They want you to look glamorous on your day, and you should expect them to be honest and accept their feedback gracefully. • Let the professionals help. There are people with expertise in this area. Listen to their advice and feedback. They have insight into current trends, what style may work well with your body build, etc. Tell them right away about your likes and dislikes to help them tune in to your personal style.

budgeting tips for brides& grooms hen it comes to planning a wedding, finances are first and foremost on the minds of many couples. As the costs associated with weddings continue to rise, the need for a budget only grows more apparent. But how can a couple establish and stick to a budget? Doing so depends on each individual couple, how much they can spend and what they’re willing to sacrifice for their big day.

W

Thinkstock.com

wedding expenses should be drawn solely from this account. This is a good way to monitor how much you’re spending, and your monthly statement will provide an itemized list of how much is being deposited and spent.

Establishing a budget Wedding budgets can vary greatly depending on the couple and the type of wedding they desire. A wedding budget should be established as far in advance as possible. When setting the budget, it’s best to determine exactly how much you can spend, and then set the budget lower than that. For example, if the most you can afford is $25,000, set your budget at $22,000. This will allow you some wiggle room when the inevitable happens and you’re forced to go over budget.

Be ready to spend more Regardless of how well you’ve planned the wedding, you’re going to end up spending more than your initial budget allowed. This happens for a number of reasons, ranging from overtime fees at the reception to tipping the vendors, to larger guest lists than you might have originally intended. Prepare for the inevitable overspending by cutting back on other expenses leading up to the big day. Rather than going out to dinner on weekends, make a home-cooked meal to save some money. Instead of costly trips to a night club, invite friends over for the night. You’ll be surprised how much these subtle lifestyle changes can save you.

Monitor your spending Once a budget has been determined, a good way for couples to adhere to that budget is to establish a separate wedding spending account. This account should be separate from personal accounts, and all

Stick to your guns While you should be prepared to spend more, that extra spending should be saved for things such as tipping the staff and possibly paying more for an additional guest or two. Where couples should be

budget tips

Creative for weddings There’s good news for brides and grooms. Experts say it’s possible to have a wedding to remember without breaking the bank. The key is planning. Here are some tips:

budget-cautious is when vendors try to upsell services. For example, while a top-shelf bar might be a nice gesture, it can be considerably more expensive than just offering beer at your reception and letting your guests pay for liquor. If a vendor tries to up-sell, couples should not hold that against the vendor. After all, that’s their job. Instead, prioritize what you want before you go visit any vendors. You’re much more likely to be happy with your selections. –(MS)

Pare down the guest list. One of the easiest ways to save money is to invite only close family and friends. Choose flowers wisely. Choose flowers in season. Choose a location such as a garden or vineyard that has built-in decor. If your bloom of choice isn’t in season, swap out expensive flow-

Find a sample sale. A popular way to save on the wedding dress is to hit a sample sale, which experts say can help cut costs by as much as 80 percent. If you’re having a fall/winter wedding, check out sample sales during April/May, and if you’re having a spring/summer wedding, hit the sample sales in October/ November.

Save on alcohol. To save on alcohol, consider unlimited beer and wine with a signature cocktail. Get creative with the cake. If you have your baker create a fake layer or two in your wedding cake, and actually serve slices from a sheet cake hidden in the kitchen, you can save about 50 percent per slice. –(NAPS)

Set your priorities. How you budget your money is going to depend on your priorities. If serving a four-course dinner is more important to you than hiring a high-end photographer, then you’ll want to budget more on food.

TUXEDOchoices

T

here are many grooms-to-be who leave choosing their wedding day attire to the last minute. After all, it’s something that doesn’t require much thought, right? Actually, choosing your attire requires careful consideration of several variables. As such, many men are intimidated by the process, which is another reason for procrastination. However, acquiring a few pointers will help make the process easier if you have limited experience with wedding day attire. First, it’s important to consider the style of your wedding. What time is it being held? What is the size of the wedding party and the number of attendants? Will it be held in a church with a reception at a fancy catering hall, or is it a more laid-back affair at a park or on the beach? All of these questions will help determine the formality of the event. Your wardrobe choices should coincide with this level of formality. Tuxedos are often the attire of choice for

weddings that are moderately or ultra formal. A tuxedo with a bow tie and tails is a very formal look. For the majority of weddings a tuxedo without tails, with a matching vest and regular tie, will be adequate for the groom and groomsmen. On some occasions, especially casual weddings, grooms choose to wear a sports jacket and slacks rather than a tuxedo. Tuxedoes are flattering for most men, especially when a black tuxedo is chosen. Black is slimming, and simply slipping into a tuxedo can enable anyone to look sophisticated. Working with a tuxedo shop representative can help you to find a tuxedo that fits well. These garments are available in a number of sizes, but a reputable shop will make minor alterations to ensure a perfect fit. You want to be sure there is no pulling in the jacket and that the pants are a good length. Also, the fit of the shirt – including collar and shirt sleeve length – is important (the cuffs should extend past the jacket a little bit). You want to be comfortable the

entire duration of your wedding. Tuxedo jackets come in many styles, with the basics being single- or doublebreasted. Double-breasted jackets may add a little bulk, which should be avoided by heavy men or those who are very slim. Jackets also come in different lengths. Choose one that is proportionate to your height so your body does not look overwhelmed by the jacket. Here are a few of the styles: Cutaway jacket. This jacket is shorter in the front and tapers to one longer tail in the back. It is traditionally a formal daytime jacket. Traditional tuxedo jacket. As mentioned, this can be single- or doublebreasted and feature varied numbers of button closures. The lapels may also be varied. A peaked lapel forms a “v” at the collar and points upward. A notched lapel has an indentation at the collar in the shape of a triangle. A shawl lapel has no indentation and smoothly curves around the neck.

Wedding experts recommend renting attire three months before the wedding. Mandarin jacket. Mandarinstyle jackets do not have a lapel but a collar that stands straight up. There are six buttons along the front. It is worn with a mandarin-style shirt without a tie. Long coat. The long coat is best worn by tall, broad-shouldered men and is traditional in colder weather. The coat extends beyond the fingertips of the wearer. Dinner jacket. This is a variation on the regular tuxedo jacket, but it is usually ivory or white in color. This can set the groom apart from other members of the wedding party. Many grooms-to-be opt to rent their tuxedo instead of purchase one. Wedding experts recommend renting the attire three months before the wedding. All groomsmen should rent

their tuxedos from the same shop for a uniform look. It is also customary to coordinate the tuxedos with the gowns bridesmaids will be wearing. One way to do so is with a similar colored tie, vest or cummerbund. Take a color swatch of one of the bridesmaids’ gowns with you to the tuxedo store for assistance with matching the look. Pick up the tuxedo a day or two before the wedding and try on every piece, including the shoes, to check for fit. This way you have time for an exchange if something is not right or to pick up a missing tie or cufflink, which is apt to happen. Rented tuxedos usually need to be returned the day after the wedding or the next business day. Elect a member of the wedding party to handle tuxedo returns. –(MS)

Photographing your wedding experience picture can indeed be worth a thousand words, especially when it comes to weddings. Most brides and grooms have undoubtedly booked the best photographer their budget will allow to capture priceless memories from their wedding day. Many couples also realize that it is important to capture the special moments leading up to and following the big day – such as the engagement and bachelorette parties, showers, the rehearsal dinner and honeymoon. Although a professional photographer may not always be on hand for these happenings, newlyweds will probably want to make certain that after the honeymoon, they have a variety of photographs to fill their albums. Here are a few simple tips to help preserve the memories from this special time:

A

Capturing the preparations. Some of the most entertaining moments occur months, weeks or days before the wedding. Therefore, many brides, relatives and friends should bring a camera to capture the preparations, such as dress-shopping excursions and hair/makeup sessions. Photos of such memorable occasions can be part of the formal wedding album, and also will help the bride compare wedding-gown options and select those she likes best. A bride’s stylist can then use these pictorial reminders to assist them in re-creating her desired look. Power at the ready! With the mainstream popularity of digital cameras, shutterbugs take a lot more photos than ever before, especially when it involves a special event like a wedding.

As guests snap away during the ceremony and cocktail hour, many will end up with a dead battery before the first dance. That’s why it is always a good idea, whether at the favor table or in the vanity baskets, to provide guests with plenty of disposable batteries to keep their cameras powered when there is no time to recharge. The most popular sizes for today’s cameras are AA alkaline batteries for digital cameras and photo lithium batteries for film cameras. Because professional photo proofs often take several weeks to arrive, guests’ photos are typically the first the bride and groom will actually see, so it is in their best interest to keep their guests ready to capture their best moments. Instant albums. Another growing trend among brides is not only that of documenting their wedding experience from the engagement through the honeymoon, but also preserving those moments in personalized scrapbooks or instant albums. An instant album is easily created by pre-decorating album pages, then bringing a portable photo printer to special occasions, such as the engagement party or bridal shower. Friends and relatives can snap digital photos, print them, and instantly affix them to the album pages along with personal notes. With this option, no time is wasted – each section of the photo album will be complete before the champagne runs dry.

Cyber brides. Many brides and grooms are creating their own website to serve as both a prewedding information center (e.g., for RSVPs, directions, gift registry) and a cyberalbum for uploading photographs complete with captions, to share with family and friends. Several sites also allow guests to download images for their own enjoyment. One of the most popular and modestly priced hosting sites is www.ewedding.com. –(BNN) With these simple suggestions, each memorable moment can be made to last a lifetime.

honeymoon planning A fter months of planning and saving for a wedding, a honeymoon offers one-to-one time for the couple to have fun, develop a deeper relationship, and enjoy some much needed rest and relaxation.

Among couples who enjoy a traditional wedding, statistics say that 99 percent take a honeymoon. The average honeymoon costs approximately $5,000. Since a honeymoon will account for at least 14 percent of the total wedding budget, couples want to ensure that theirs is money well spent – especially in an economy where every penny counts. One of the keys to honeymoon success is preparation. Here are some additional tips: Do your research. Timing plays a large role in honeymoon travel. It’s important to research the average weather conditions for prospective honeymoon locales during the month you’ll be traveling as well as any events that may take place at that time. This way you book your honeymoon during an optimal time for the best conditions, both in regards to weather and the local culture.

Save money. Putting honeymoon plans into the hands of an expert could add up to considerable savings. Travel agents have relationships with tour and package providers that they can leverage in ways the average consumer cannot. Turn to a honeymoon expert for honeymoon planning needs so your honeymoon can truly be a trip of a lifetime.

Honeymoon registry. Not just for budget-conscious bridesand grooms-to-be, consider creating a honeymoon registry to give your wedding guests an alternative to crock pots, toasters and blenders. Wedding guests can improve a honeymoon experience by gifting the activities, excursions and dining experiences that make the trip memorable. Read reviews. There’s a reason review sites are so popular – they help people make better, more informed decisions. Advertising gives you one perspective, reviews give you another. Make sure that you read reviews of the places you are considering for your honeymoon so that you get a variety of viewpoints. we ing music usic is an integral part of both the wedding ceremony and the reception. Music conveys emotions that are difficult to put into words. Additionally, songs and music help us to remember certain key moments more easily. That’s why we often associate rites of passage with the sound track of that time in our lives. Because music is such an important part of the wedding, you want to take the time and necessary precautions to avoid wedding day music slip-ups. As with most parts of the wedding process, preparation and planning – as well as some reputable word-of-mouth recommendations – can make selecting musicians and choosing songs much smoother. Consider the following:

M

Ceremony Can you picture the bride and her attendants walking down the aisle without any music? Many couples give careful consideration to the reception music and then make the mistake of leaving the ceremony music to chance. Ask your house of worship if they have any rules regarding song selections, as well as regulations on house or outside musicians. Then work your music selections according to those guidelines. While traditionally brides enter to Here Comes the Bride, stricter houses of worship may not allow this tune, or brides simply may prefer something else.

Classical, hymnal or other processional music is often appropriate. Just keep in mind the tempo and length of the song so that it will match the gait and size of the wedding party. Chances are the ceremony musicians will be different from those who are playing at your reception, which may require a little extra planning. If your house of worship provides the musicians, arrange to sit down with them to talk about styles and what to expect. Also arrange to have payment or a tip provided for their services. Reception Depending upon the venue, you will likely have more wiggle room with your choices for music at the reception. Brides and grooms usually use either live performers or DJs who play pre-recorded music. Some performers offer a combination of both. Consider the style of your wedding. Will it be formal or informal? Traditional or contemporary? Aim for music that suits the style or theme of the wedding. A full-piece orchestra may seem out of place at a casual party. When you are choosing music, consider not only your tastes, but the tastes of your guests as well. While you won’t be able to please each and every person, the wider the range of music you have available, the greater the chance of people getting up to dance and enjoying themselves.

Contracts Once you decide on your ceremony and reception musicians, it’s important to sign a contract and work out payment agreements. Having the information in writing protects you in case the musicians don’t deliver what was expected. Here are some points that should be covered in the contracts. • Price, deposit amount, additional charges (travel, food requirements, etc.), and overtime rates. • The number of musicians who will be attending and what instruments they play. • Names of specific people you want, such as DJ, lead vocalist and master of ceremonies, as well as what compensation will be made if these people are not available. • Date and hours they’ll be working. • Additional services, such as dramatic lighting, dancers or party favors. • Number of breaks and how the break time will be covered, such as with recorded music. • Style of dress or costumes. • Specific music requests and a list of your wedding attendants so they’ll have the right names if announcements are being made. Be sure to ask friends, relatives and others for musician recommendations. When you attend weddings, take the cards of performers you enjoyed. Contact prospective performers early on to ensure your wedding date is available. –(ARA)

Before you tie the knot... peak to anyone who has been married for years, and you will find that communication is the key to a successful relationship. However, many couples enter marriage without really knowing their spouses, or how they feel about certain beliefs, hopes, aspirations, or even financial concerns. After the glow of the wedding is over, couples who haven’t discussed these important topics may find that stress or arguments arise from miscommunication or misunderstanding. Taking time to sit down with your fiancÊe or fiancÊ prior to planning the wedding can help you learn even more about your compatibility and potential for a long-lasting marriage. Here are some of the questions you can ask each other, which may spark meaningful conversation. (Questions courtesy of WeddingPlanningWorksheets.com) – (MS)

Bridal registry re you one of the thousands of couples who got engaged over the holidays? This is an opportunity for you and your future spouse to get everything you ever wanted. Now is the time to start from scratch – to upgrade, expand and replace, and to turn a whole bunch of mismatched mine and yours into a lifetime of ours. A lot of couples become overwhelmed, feeling they have to get it all done at once. According to the experts, this is totally normal. When it comes to registering, they suggest you relax, take your time and have fun. Go back to the store as many times as needed, or update your registry online. Here are some additional tips to make wedding planning a breeze:

A

1

Plan ahead:

Start a bridal registry as soon as you say “yes.” This way you will be prepared for your engagement party and bridal shower, as well as your wedding. Periodically update your registry by adding more products if you need to, even after the wedding. Be kind to procrastinators.

2

Don’t be shy:

Register for gifts in a range of prices and categories. This will give guests and group givers lots of options to choose from.

Check out our gift registry checklist on page 38!

Sweet it is...

How

Remember... if you choose bold patterns for your linens, choose simple patterns for your dinnerware. Timeless styles will be appreciated long after the wedding.

3

Do the math:

Here’s an easy rule of thumb: Add up all the gift-givers for both your wedding and bridal shower. Register for at least two times as many gifts as givers. Your guests will appreciate having lots of choices when they shop for you. Be sure to refresh your list regularly as gifts get purchased.

4

Register now, because you won’t buy it later:

You may think you will, but you probably won’t. Now is the time to let others get you the stuff you’d never buy yourself. Your friends and family might even get together to purchase a higher priced group gift.

sets is a win: Register for at least three sets of sheets: one for the bed, one for the linen closet and one for the hamper. This way you won’t be forced to do laundry.

5

Remember the rule of three:

When it comes to setting your table, if you choose bold patterns for your china and flatware, pick a more simple style of glassware. Prefer intricate stemware? Pair it with simpler patterns of china and flatware. So, it’s bold/bold/simple or simple/simple/bold. Congratulations and best wishes on your engagement. Now get registering and let the gift-giving begin. –(MS)

the Roles of wedding party participants wedding can be a wonderful and memorable experience for all involved. That’s why you ask friends or relatives to share in the event and serve in your wedding party. Your offer is a wonderful honor, one that requires varying degrees of responsibility depending on the role each person will be playing. To help you decide who to ask to be in your wedding party, here is a list of titles and responsibilities for each participant’s role.

the reception site or the donation for the house of worship, and take care of any final financial details. He also holds the bride’s wedding ring during the ceremony.

Bridesmaids

Along with walking in the wedding procession, bridesmaids attend the shower and contribute to the bridal gifts. Bridesmaids, who are typically sisters or friends of the bride or groom, also dance with the groomsmen during the reception. To be further involved, each can be given specific roles, like reading a religious passage at the ceremony, providing assistance with choosing wedding vendors, or helping to address wedding invitations.

Maid of honor

The maid of honor is a role typically filled by a sister or a close friend. It is the equivalent of the groom’s best man. The maid of honor’s role, therefore, is typically very involved. Among her many responsibilities, the maid of honor accompanies the bride on shopping trips for her wedding dress, while also planning the bridal shower, bachelorette party and coordinating the bridal party gift for the bride. Also, the maid of honor helps the bride get dressed on her wedding day, holds the groom’s wedding ring during the wedding and may also help in the writing of invitations. The maid of honor will also typically act as a witness to the wedding and dance with the best man at the reception.

Groomsmen Timeless Moments Photography

If the woman you’re asking is married, her title will be matron of honor.

Best man

Perhaps the most wellknown responsibilities of the best man are organizing the bachelor party and giving the toast at the reception. But the best man, who is typically a

brother or best friend of the groom, also has many other responsibilities. In addition to helping the groom choose his tuxedo and get dressed before the wedding, the best man also coordinates the couple’s gift from the groomsmen. The best man may also hold onto any payment that’s due to

Groomsmen are the male equivalent of the bridesmaids, typically having nearly identical responsibilities. Sometimes, groomsmen can act as ushers for guests arriving at the ceremony. Groomsmen walk in the wedding processional and attend and help organize the bachelor party as well.

Flower girl

If the bride has a sister who is especially young, that sister typically fills the role of flower girl.

Since most flower girls are very young, their responsibilities are generally limited to carrying a basket of flowers during the processional and, depending on the bride’s preference, tossing flower petals on the ground to mark the bride’s entrance.

Ring bearer

Like the flower girl, the ring bearer is typically a young member of the family. His role is to carry a pillow with the rings sewn on it during the processional. Some choose to have the ring bearer and flower girl walk next to one another during the processional.

Parents of the bride

The bride’s parents may be responsible for hosting the wedding, if they will be completely financially responsible for the event. In some cases, the father of the bride escorts his daughter down the aisle alone, but in other instances or in religious ceremonies, both

parents may accompany the bride. In all cases, it’s her preference. The mother of the bride may help fund or contribute to the planning of the bridal shower if the maid of honor needs assistance. These parents may also foot the cost of an engagement party or dinner to meet the groom’s family

Parents of the groom

The groom’s parents should host a rehearsal dinner prior to the wedding. They may also contribute to the wedding if they desire. In most cases, the groom’s parents have limited responsibilities, but can be involved as much as the wedding couple would like. Traditionally, the groom’s mother confers with the bride’s mother on what color gown she is wearing, so as not to go with the same shade. The groom’s parents may walk down the aisle in advance of the rest of the wedding processional. –(MS)

Groom’s Wedding Planner Checklist The bride is not the only one with planning to do! Take care of these before the big day:

6 to 12 months before

4 months before

Purchase the bride’s engagement ring. Discuss with fiancee the date and type of wedding. Start on your guest list. Choose best man and ushers. Start planning and making necessary arrangements for the honeymoon. Discuss and plan, with fiancee, your new home together. If fiancee is moving in with you, start cleaning out closets, cupboards and drawers to make room for your bride and wedding gifts.

Don’t forget to honor the groomsmen eddings are all about the brides, or so it would seem. While all eyes are on the bride, the groom sometimes goes unnoticed. One person who shouldn’t fail to notice the groomsmen is the groom himself. Groomsmen can and often do have significant responsibilities. A good groom should recognize the efforts of his groomsmen and give gifts as an acknowledgement of their efforts. Following are some gift ideas:

W

Commemorate the reception.

Men tend to focus on the celebratory aspects of the day. Grooms can give a personalized gift as a means of commemorating the day.

Back to the bachelor party.

These days, weekend getaways are a common theme to many bachelor parties. Consider gifts that evoke memories of that special weekend where you were the guest of honor.

Go the more fanciful route.

For grooms whose wedding will be an elegant affair, celebrate that elegance by giving each of your groomsmen an engraved pocket watch. (MS)

Shop with fiancee for wedding rings. Complete your guest list, including full names, addresses and ZIP codes with phone numbers. Check requirements for blood test and marriage license in your state, or the state in which you are being married. Select and order men’s wedding attire with your fiancee. Finalize all honeymoon plans and send in deposits if required (don’t delay — some resorts fill up fast in popular months).

2 months before

Meet with officiant to finalize ceremony details. Assist parents with plans for the rehearsal dinner party. Discuss the amount and the financial arrangement for the flowers that are the groom’s responsibility. Arrange accommodations for out-oftown attendants.

1 month before

See that all attendants have been fitted and wedding attire has been ordered. Purchase gifts for best man and ushers. Purchase wedding gifts for fiancee, if gifts are being exchanged. Pick up wedding rings. Make sure they fit. Take care of business and legal affairs (add bride’s name to insurance policies and medical plans, make a new will, add her name to joint checking account or joint charge cards). If you have both agreed to a pre-nuptial agreement, have it drawn up and signed.

2 weeks before

Timeless Moments Photography

Arrange wedding day transportation. Reconfirm accommodations for outof-town guests. If moving, give change of address card to post office; arrange to have utilities and phone service turned on in new home. If not moving, finish cleaning and reorganizing your home; help your fiancee move her things. Have your hair cut.

1 week before

Discuss all final details with fiancee; offer to assist if needed. Pick up and try on wedding attire. See that attendants get their wedding attire. Pack clothes for honeymoon. Reconfirm all honeymoon reservations. If flying, make sure you have plane tickets. See to it that you and your attendants are at the rehearsal and that they know their duties. Go over special seating or pew cards with ushers. Make sure luggage is in the car or the hotel where you will stay your first night. Attend rehearsal dinner. Relax and enjoy yourself.

Congratulations! You’re ready for a wonderful wedding day!

Together with fiancee, gather necessary documents and get your marriage license.
