J’aimee Skippon-Volke Festival Director It’s been five years since 2006 and the inaugural Byron Bay Film Festival. During this time the festival has grown considerably with the number of films we screen leaping from 55 to a staggering 200. It is now embraced by filmmakers from around Australia and the world and each year there are a greater number making the effort to show up at (what is now) the Byron Bay International Film Festival to introduce their films and share their work with our audiences. Selected out of over 800 entries, all of the films screening at BBFF2011 have been assiduously chosen for their inclusion because of the quality of their stories, characters and production. When looking through all these submissions, it didn’t take long to realise that a common theme was surfacing – that it ‘only takes one to create change: one idea, one person, one movement’. Many of the films on offer at BBFF 2011 are about individuals who are passionately engaged in making a difference in their own lives, or in the lives of others, or for those without a voice. The team at BBFF hopes that our 2011 Official Selection will empower our audiences with the knowledge that change begins at home – that each individual is able to stand up for what they believe in, and that starting the wheels of positive change in motion is the beginning of making a difference.

Gala Opening Night Gala Party Friday 4th Saturday 12th The Red Carpet Gala Opening Night will once again set the scene for this year’s spectacular ten-night, nine-day international film festival. The official celebrations begin Friday 4th March with none other than Australia’s very own screen icon, Jack Thompson, opening the 5th Byron Bay International Film Festival. Jack’s latest film, The Telegram Man, (screening Saturday the 5th) is the first short film he’s made and is nominated for BBFF’s Best Short Film Award.

With Sunday 13th March the final day of film festivities, be sure to join us as we wind down the 2011 BBFF with another Red Carpet Gala Party on Saturday 12th. A handful of our top awards will be given out, including the big one for Best Film.

Venue The Byron Bay International Film Festival is held at the Byron Community Centre at 69 Jonson St, Byron Bay. Lismore screenings BBFF’s new 2011 partnership with Birch Carroll & Coyle Cinemas in Lismore offers folks who live inland from the coast much easier access to some of this year’s quality film submissions. 8 Free Events BBFF hosts a series of free events which benefit both filmmakers and film lovers. It is our hope that these events serve to build an appreciation of screen culture, new artistic media or a new skills base for those who attend.

Turning Point – at the Top Shop Turning Point is a photographic exhibition by Rusty Miller, showcasing a significant collection of his surf photos from the 1970s which includes many photos from Lennox/Byron of the days in which Paul Witzig’s film ‘Sea of Joy’ was being filmed: the p eople, the dogs, the old cars and the pure uncrowded atmosphere. The exhibition opens march 3rd at the Top Shop at 5:30pm until March 11th.

Experimental Film Showcase As the digital divide diminishes and more of the world’s population gains access to technology, new versions of creative expression can be experimented with on screen. Throughout the festival in the evenings when the Filmmakers bar is open we will screen a selection of experimental films from around the world. Serafinell by David Roupell is a musical and visual journey where the separate artwork images dissolve into each other and create a third magical image in the process.

“Outback and Beyond: A Live Australian Western” is a new collaboration between Mike Cooper and Grayson Cooke. It is a meeting of cultural and musical traditions as much as a melange of digital and analogue media; to Mike’s soundtrack of deconstructed Blues, lap-steel guitar and processed electronics, Grayson performs a live re-mix of archival footage of the Australian outback, from titles from the 1920s to the 1950s held by the National Film and Sound Archive. The unique result is a live “Australian Western,” a meditation on Australian iconography and mythography, the dusty, hard-bitten DNA of national identity.

The Doors by Raimond de Weerd consists of numerous scenes from Film Noir genre movies and shows the viewer that this classic film genre relied on very simple means to create suspense, drama, anger and revelation through clever use of doors. Free Live Audio-Visual Performances Light and sound – those are the heart of the movie. Recorded on celluloid or digital media it can travel the globe at the speed of the national broadband network. But it wasn’t always that way. The early days of film often had live pianists or organists accompanying. Later, enhanced sound systems enhanced the visuals. Now, BBFF is delighted to

Tralala Blip, fresh from Disembraining Machine, will sonically explore current concerns such as “soccer in outer space” and “dinosaurs versus robots”. Co.polymer will weigh in with the ‘Sound of Concrete’ and will tell you ‘Why Robots Make Good Lovers’ before chilling you right down with a sneak Byron preview of their magnum opus “The Ice Suite”.

PROGRAMME Free Workshops & Discussion Panels BBFF seeks to augment the festival experience by providing free events for filmmakers - whether you are a professional, a fledgling filmmaker or a curious film buff, we have something for you. 2011 sees us hosting a forum from Arts Northern Rivers for Artists too. Being held in the SCU Room upstairs at the Byron Community Centre, our workshops and panels are run by top specialists in their field and admission is free.

Workshop: Switching On New Screens Gil Scrine, founder of Antidote Films, explores how video-on-demand is switching on new screens for doco makers. A recently formed partnership between Brisbane-based distributor, Antidote Films, and Sydney-based Pan Pacific Interactive will carve out a new niche in the VOD market after receiving funding under Screen Australia’s Innovative Distribution program to research and develop a new VOD, documentary-focused, multi-platform distribution pipeline. Alongside an impressive slate which includes McLibel and The Corporation Antidote Films are distributors for the NZ doco, This Way of Life. Gil will discuss the challenges of bringing this Oscar-shortlisted film to Australian screens. This workshop is followed by This Way of Life at 4pm.

Workshop: Navigating The Rapids Producer Gabrielle Dalton (Soundtrack to War, Rampage & The Miscreants of Taliwood) has worked on documentaries where the choice of decisions made all the difference, Gabrielle will share some of her own examples of how to deal with critical situations that may arise. She invites you to take out your paddle and open your mind to riding the opportunities for decision making that exist – day to day – while in production. In the end these decisions define the style and success of your film. So instead of seeing these ‘rapids’ as something to dread and resist, allow them to open you to the inventive and creative possibilities they afford.

Discussion Panel: The Evolution of Surf Film How has surf filmmaking changed since it emerged as its own film genre? And where is it heading to from here? From the early days of scratchy celluloid footage of waves, wax and babes, surf films have come a long way. Gone are the days when surf film making was just about ‘living the dream’. The dream has become a reality, and it’s brought a whole lot of awareness along with it. This insightful panel features Byron’s own surfing legend Rusty Miller; along with First Love’s Claire Gorman & Clare Plueckhahn; Derek Hynd & Surfer Magazine’s editor-at-large Steve (Barlo) Barilotti (Wave of Compassion, Minds in the Water, 180 South, and the Emmy-winning Kokua).

The overwhelmingly positive feedback from the schools that attended last year definitely provided us the incentive to keep these sessions happening. Film culture is alive and well and extremely popular amongst our growing youth! The only challenges for the BBFF team related to selecting these specific programme sessions. Not that we had to hunt to find the right films, as so many of the submitted films offer ageappropriate themes as well as being entertaining and inspiring. Westall ’66: A Suburban UFO Mystery

Economic globalisation has led to a massive expansion in the scale and power of big business and banking. It has also worsened nearly every problem we face: fundamentalism and ethnic conflict; climate chaos and species extinction; financial instability and unemployment. For the majority of people on the planet, life is becoming increasingly stressful.

The Economics of Happiness describes a world moving simultaneously in two opposing directions. On the one hand, an unholy alliance of governments and Big Business continues to promote globalisation and the consolidation of corporate power. At the same time, all around the world people are resisting those policies, demanding a re-regulation of trade and finance and starting to forge a very different future. Since the year 2000, over 4,300 Palestinian and 1,000 Israeli lives have been lost in the conflict in Gaza. In 2006, Israel and Egypt sealed the borders USA | 83 min | Alexander Klein while Palestinian militants targeted Israel’s | Alexander Klein | Surf | 2010 | civilian population with deadly rocket strikes. The Australian Premiere Israeli Army countered with air strikes, targeting militants, but often claiming the lives of innocent residents. In 2007, word reached Israel about a small group of young men surfing in Gaza, sharing battered surfboards. A group of Israelis and Americans delivered a dozen boards to their Palestinian counterparts and, in the spring of 2008, they would attempt to deliver 23 more surfboards. The border was still sealed, with increased military activity on both sides. Documenting 50 days of an area filled with hate and war, where in the middle people are surfing. At a time when tensions are high, this film investigates the attitudes and aspirations of a small pocket of people where surfing removes socio-political divisions and lets the ocean carry their aspirations for peace.

The Great Calm

The Great Calm is a unique film that captures a rare look at one of the most adventurous and elusive creatures living today. Proudly introducing a first look at Tallow and ‘The Great Calm’.

This is a short surf documentary that focuses on four kids who are talented young surfers from the island of Bali. They are a part of a wonderful surf community that helps one another and their beach. These four want to continue with their education and hope to one day study at the local university. The goal of this film is to to raise money to pay for their education, and hopefully others, who have the need as well in the community! Director Scott LeDuc will be in attendance.

A story of surfing and survival. Thirteen-year-old Fabio and his best friend Nama live at Favela do Pavao, an enormous slum near Arpoador Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Pavao is home to the Red Command, one of Rio’s most heavily armed drug gangs. It’s the Red Command who sets the rules and regulates life in the community. While the drug trade boss is often in his twenties, most of the soldiers on the ground are teenagers. Fabio lives in ‘Vietnam’ – the poorest and most violent part of the slum – and is a prime candidate to become yet another gun-toting teenager. For many of these favela kids, surfing means spending time in the water and away from the poverty and violence of the hills. It means a water-bound escape, whether just for one day or, if they’re successful at it, for the rest of their lives.

What do you need if you are to look after the very old, or the very young? Patience, discipline, perseverance, but also compassion and a sense of fun! Filmmaker Roger Villarroya will be in attendance.

Filmmaking is not just a profession to Daniel Burmeister; it is his life. He drives around Argentina in a beat-up old car, going from village to village and approaching the local mayor, offering to make a feature film there in 30 days, in exchange for room and board. He assembles the cast from local villagers; the equipment (a camera and a lamp for shooting at night) is his own. For each film, he adapts one of his five screenplays, and ultimately makes his money from ticket sales for screening his movie to the villagers/actors. This documentary follows the tireless and irrepressibly optimistic Burmeister from the moment he arrives in yet another little village. In voice-over, Burmeister talks about his life and shares his refreshing philosophy.

Dirty Bloody Hippies is a fascinating, funny and often poignant hippie trip back to 1970s New Zealand. Four Strokes of Luck

Hipsters won the 2009 Nika Award (Russia’s answer to the Oscar) for best film, best cinematography, costume design and sound editing.
