Workshops, panels, parties and premieres form the backdrop for 55 public sessions in four venues across the northern rivers region. In addition to our Festival HQ – The Byron Community Centre BBFF has partnered with what we consider to be some of the best and most charismatic arthouse independent cinemas in Australia - Byron’s Pighouse Flicks, Murwillumbah’s Regent Cinema and for the first time Lismore’s historic Star Court Theatre.

Our team aims to create an event that entices both those with a passion or just a passing interest in film to dive in, try something new or different – to Open Your Aperture.

There is a lot of thought that goes into curating a programme as vast as ours.

Films must complement and support

each other while letting their uniqueness and individual messages shine. The festival is a showplace for the work of over 220 directors, who themselves are part of teams both large and small, and we are thrilled once again to play host to filmmakers from around Australia and the world who join you here to engage and indulge in 10 days of heartfelt, inspiring and cutting-edge independent cinema.

To me, 2013 already feels like a very positive year. Collectively we survived 2012 and now as a society it is time to start planning for our future. There are many films in this festival that encourage viewers to both make and accept constructive change. It’s a sentiment that is shared by our community.

We’ll be rolling out the red carpet for the Opening Night of the 7th annual Byron Bay International Film Festival on March 1. It’s emotional but most of all – it’s tremendous fun. Most of the awards have already been given out during the festival, but now we get to find out the award for the big one, Best Film 2013. Ten days and nights of film. It’s an epic! We should all toast ourselves: Best Audience of 2013.

Cinema among the stars Monday February 25th Films start: 7.30pm Adjacent to the Byron Surf Club, Main Beach Byron Bay. Imagine sitting in a grassy park next to the ocean, feeling that slight salty breeze off the beach and listening to the quiet gentle rhythm of the waves.

Surrounded by your family and a bunch of friends, it’s the perfect place to watch a sensational film on a big screen outdoors under the stars.

Welcome to the Byron Bay International Film Festival’s Full Moon Sunset Cinema. Oh yeah, and it’s free.

The festival launched the free outdoor Full Moon Sunset Cinema in 2012. It was regarded by many locals as one of the most magical nights

of the year. With the threat of wild weather the gods blessed the festival when the moon rose over the lighthouse to a wonderful clear balmy night.

It seemed that the Man in the Moon was smiling directly at the festival. And he, like the audience, was entertained by the likes of Garrett Kato, Ben Livermore, Rusty Miller, Will Conner and Jack Johnson prior to the screening of the fabulous film, Minds in the Water. It was a truly memorable night.

Will the 2013 sunset cinema be as good as that inaugural 2012? Well they say that magic follows magic, so here’s hoping… Bring a picnic rug, a basket of tasty snacks, and a soul full of community spirit for a laidback night of surf films and good vibes with family, friends and the full moon.

Every year BBFF presents a selection of experimental films from around the world. These avant-garde pieces break convention to turn film into art. Experimental filmmakers are asking you to explore the meaning of their films and to draw your own judgments.

(Spain) Moments before the Earth explodes, a woman remembers her relationship with a man at the beginning of the 21st century.

Txiki (Spain) Txiki is a documentary piece structured around artist Txiki Medina and focused on the creative process of an oil painting.

Landscape Duet

(Belgium) (Hong Kong) Landscape Duet takes an interest in Hong Kong territory and reveals both its urban landscapes and natural environment as two dancers physically explore the radically opposite locations.

Dead Reckoning is a poetic film about memory and contemplation.

From Her to Eternity (Japan) An in-temporal and immaterial love story.

Olmeheidutus (Estonia) Polly, Jennifer and Melissa (Australia)

Steam Machines (NZ) Within an old shed housing renovated steam traction engines lies hidden pieces of art; discarded oil cans, rusted and patinated gears and screws, steam gracefully rising towards an illuminated skylight.

An androgyne by the name of Polly recalls an episode of post-coital anxiety while Jennifer confesses to a priest and Melissa poses flirtatiously for the viewer.

Director’s Picks Between January and April this year India celebrates 100 years of cinema and this comes at a time when the role of women in India is being deeply questioned. In addition to our Opening Night film the rich and layered The World Around Her we are also screening the delightful Much Ado About Knotting, an engaging light-hearted Indian produced film which explores modern day match-making.

And then there’s Penny Vozniak’s Despite the Gods which marries Bollywood and the world of modern day Indian Filmmaking with one fascinating lady – director Jennifer Lynch, daughter of David Lynch.

Cinema can be a doorway into other realities where we lose ourselves but also actively observe – absorbing the intricacies of the simplest of movements and actions. Eastern European cinema catches this masterfully in films such as Co Raz Zostalo Zapisane (Written in Ink); Kichot; Rogalik. Catch the animated Father and Co Sie Dzieje, Gdy Dzieci Nie Chca Jesc Zupy (What Happens When Children Don’t Eat Soup). And then there’s the Polish master filmmaker Roman Polanski, in Roman Polanski: A Film Memoir.

Underground cinema pushes the boundaries of film culture and we are presenting Going Undergound with five sessions of sex, magick, UFOs and brainwashing at Pighouse Flicks. Back at our HQ (the Byron Community Centre) catch Into the Zone, if surrealist anarchy is your thing or 2 films which cut to the heart of indie-filmmaking - The Naughty

Room and How to Make a Film.

Virtuosi engages us through dance while the power of music is demonstrated in the films McDonald Masada which is paired with Michael Altman’s American Songwriter. Lost and Sound looks at music, deafness and the way our brains relate to music.

Then, of course, there’s Electrick Children, one not to miss.

Films such as Elemental, Quem Se Importa? (Who Cares?) and Sanctity of Sanctuary; and our Sustainable Shorts inspire and encourage change in our own lives. Surf Films such Isolated, Szorffilm, Otelo Burning and Surfing and Sharks explore the lengths some will go to find freedom in the waves.

We have a number of thought provoking films which seek reconciliation, social justice and ask the viewer to reflect after viewing Gudu (Alone), Touch Bond, Private, Stories from Lakka Beach, The Women of Fukushima and Precarious which we’ve programmed at 4pm. We believe it’s important that these be told and so as a little incentive for we’re offering 4,4,3@4. Which is four tickets to any of these 4pm sessions for the price of three. There is so much good stuff I really can’t limit it to one page. Twenty-five years ago Reactor No. 4 at Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant exploded. In the aftermath, people, and radiation, were dispersed across the Soviet Union. Over 600,000 people participated in the cleanup. 8,000 people still work there to contain the contamination. Further on, houses lie buried, ghostly, under a layer of toxic clay. The power plant itself sits in a vast iced-over lake, its structures terminally damaged. The abandoned city of Pripyat, blanketed by thick snow and heavy silence, is a place after the end of the world. For locals, ice and snow provide protection against radiation, trapping radioactive materials that still linger on. With the spring, flooding will occur, and once again contaminated water will run from the Pripyat River to the Black Sea. Avoiding the conventions of a standard documentary approach, Precarious is a haunting evocation of mankind’s capacity to endure.

Filmmaker Trevor Graham is an Australian ‘hummus tragic’. Every week in his Bondi Beach home he observes the hummus-making ritual, mashing chickpeas, lemon juice, garlic and tahina. But when the Hummus War erupted in 2008, among the usual suspects, Israel, Lebanon and Palestine, Graham was hungry for more. But this war ha no soldiers, bullets or tanks.

Just chickpeas and hummus. Make Hummus Not War is a humorous homage to the chickpea’s most distinguished dish. But there’s a personal story, how Graham became a hummus tragic, a father who served in Palestine during WW2 and two lovers in his life, one Egyptian, one Jewish, with whom he shared a great culinary passion.

Their parents are nowhere to be seen. The three little girls send their days working in the fields or wandering in the village. With masterly control, Wang constructs his filmic chronicle on the toil and rhythms of daily life and the girls’ irrepressible youthful exuberance.

When their grandfather appears there is a new future ahead for the girls, and their family.

The film goes in-depth to portray the experiences and insights of both teachers and practitioners in the US and around the world. Along the way, it illuminates the wide-ranging dialogues taking place between Buddhist teachings and science, psychology, gender theory and the arts. The film creates a vivid and entertaining portrait of the world of Tibetan Buddhism, as it is manifesting in the West, and asks the vital question – inn these increasingly chaotic modern times, can these age-old teachings help us to find genuine happiness and create a saner, more compassionate 21st century world?
