Director’s Statement J’aimee Skippon-Volke, Festival Director Each year the Byron Bay International Film Festival continues to grow and 2014 is no exception. We have more films, premieres and venues. We’re building a flourishing international reputation which means each year we see both esteemed international filmmakers and those emerging vying for a place in our programme. Many of the films in the programmes tell topical stories of acceptance of others and of individuals finding and stepping into their identity and learning that acceptance starts within. Beyond watching entertaining, inspiring and thought-provoking films there’s a diverse slate of other activities for festival patrons to experience. There are parties and the opportunity to get social and meet new people, to meet the filmmakers. Colourful discussions and classes for

The $5000 ScreenZone International Documentary Prize The documentary prize is a cash prize of $5,000 being awarded for a third year at the 2014 Byron Bay Film Festival. Funding the prize, ScreenZone.tv is a dynamic new Video on Demand website that brings a world of films to your browser. ScreenZone and the Prize promote films that question & inspire our understanding of the world around us. For more info go to: www.screenzone.tv Last year the prize went to the Canadian-Indian film The World Before Her by Nisha Pahuja and Cornelia Principe. It makes a breath taking comparison of two extremes for women in modern India from the Miss India pageant to a training camp for Hindu fundamentalists. Judging the prize this year we have Simon Foster, a film reviewer for SBS Film and ABC Radio and ScreenZone’s founder, Michael Weatherhead.

We greatly appreciate the hard work, time and support that has helped create this event from:

GALA OPENING NIGHT GALA CLOSING PARTY Slip into your favourite cocktail dress or party shirt and join us on BBFF’s Red Carpet as we celebrate the start of ten days of screen magic at BBFF’s 8th Gala Opening Night – with Byron’s most glamorous party teamed with the most intriguing film of the festival – When My Sorrow Died: The Legend of Armen Ra & the Theremin. Besides red-carpet grandeur and seeing one of the festival’s best films, the ticket price includes three beverages, live music with the opening styles of talented up-and-comers, Louie and Patrick, our fabulous After Party, which this year is catered by Lennox Head’s gourmet restaurant, Ellenix. Andy Wheeler, Ellenix’s celebrated head chef has designed a bespoke contemporary menu of delicious canapés sourced with local ingredients. The film is a feast as moreish as the evening’s fare – captivatingly eccentric and enigmatic, told with the sharpest of wit, a cutting sense of humour, and deep sincerity. This life-spanning documentary mixes rare concert performances, candid interviews, and archive material with the magical power of music that alchemises ancient sorrow into timeless beauty with such grace that it must be seen and heard to be believed.

We’ll be joined by the legend Armen Ra himself, who last toured with Nick Cave, as well as producer Matt Huffman, who have made the journey from LA for the Australian premiere. Tickets always sell out for these special, one-off events – so don’t miss this chance to meet a living legend and join film industry and film lovers alike for a night like no other.

Raise your glasses to a festival experience like no other – packed full of astounding talent, good vibes and an array of sterling films from Australia and around the world – ten days of innovation, accomplishment and enlightenment. BBFF’s Closing Night Gala is your opportunity to chat to that lauded director of your most-loved film of the festival, and sample a delectable menu from the culinary masters at Ellenix while sipping on hand-selected wines and hit the dance floor. The highlight of the evening will no doubt be the world premiere of Cathy Henkel’s thought-provoking film Rise of the Eco Warriors. We follow a group of passionate and adventurous young people who leave their known worlds behind for the jungles of Borneo. Their mission is to confront one of the great global challenges of our time: saving rainforests and giving hope to endangered orang-utans. This is a story about what it takes it be an eco-warrior, an individual willing to step up and take action to avert a global catastrophe. The eco-warriors represent a new generation, ready to face what is happening on our planet and willing to do something, to build a more humane and balanced world. For them, every individual matters, every action counts. Please note that the screening of Rise of the Eco-Warriors will be held at Palace Cinemas with the session starting at 6.45pm sharp – we’ll then stroll the short distance back to the After Party at the Community Centre together.

FOOD FOR THE SOUL

FAMILY-FRIENDLY FILMS

Feast not only your eyes but all your senses at BBFF’s 2014 gala parties. What better accompaniment to film than fine food and hand-picked wines. This year’s local chefs extraordinaires are from Ellenix. Driven by high end quality and creativity, they are inspired by the variety and simplicity of coastal food culture around the world. Using ethically caught and grown produce and gourmet ingredients, they aim to provide more than just a meal; they strive to provide you with a sensory experience.

BBFF is not just for grown-up film buffs! Nurture your young ones’ appreciation for independent screen culture and entertain them for a fun-filled afternoon at the screening of one of our family-friendly films. Our programme contains many, including the ever-popular Family-Friendly Shorts Session. Please note: it is a requirement that children under 15 are accompanied by their parents or an adult guardian, please. Film classifications can be found on our website www.bbff.com.au.

Owner and head chef Andy Wheeler has designed a contemporary menu bursting with fresh flavours and perfectly complimenting the selection from Fox Creek Wines. Our Gala Party guests will enjoy a seasonal menu of local seafood with regionally sourced produce, all the while marrying a fusion of coastal European flavours with a spicy Asian influence. Look forward to a culinary Two treat! distinct

BYRON BAY INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2014

BYRON BAY’S MOST ROMANTIC NIGHT OF THE YEAR Who could pass up this great night under the crystal-cut full moon? BBFF once again shared the love and said a big thank you to the northern rivers community for their ongoing support, which has allowed BBFF to now proudly grow into Australia’s largest regional film festival, representing the heart and soul of this community through film. Glinting stars, ocean breezes and the sound of soft crashing waves made this a magical, laidback night for all who attended. The iconic outdoor screening to the backdrop of Byron Lighthouse included a fantastic local turnout of thousands who

joined the beachside festivities for a heart-warming evening of great live music and short films hand-picked from the last seven film festivals. Families, couples and friends relaxed on picnic rugs with baskets of snacks and lounged under the night sky to watch the diverse selection of films around the themes of connection and relationships. A night that makes you fall in love with Byron’s spirit every time, the 2014 Full Moon Cinema was once again thoroughly enjoyable and thank you to all who attended and made it such a fun, friendly and wonderful evening.

Photo: Sarah Lee

As just a taste of what is on offer throughout the festival, the Full Moon Cinema showcased the best of previous years – with the enduring message being that the magic has just begun! With venues throughout

the northern rivers region, unforgettable gala events and a programme jam-packed with amazing film – this year’s BBFF looks sure to be our best yet. If you liked what you saw under February’s full moon, just wait till you see what else we have in store in this programme!

BEST OF FEST COMES TO LISMORE AND MURWILLUMBAH BBFF brings the best in independent Australian and world cinema to Byron Bay, but there is no reason why some of that love cannot spread to our friends and cohorts around the northern rivers! We want to share this global cinematic experience with our neighbouring communities, and that’s why Lismore and Murwillumbah can both enjoy their own mini-festivals celebrating all that is great and good in the spectacular world of film. The Star Court Theatre in Lismore and the Regent Cinema in Murwillumbah will both be screening a stellar

selection from the overall Festival programme. This includes the official BBFF opening night movie – When my Sorrow Died: The Legend of Armen Ra and the Theremin – a film as haunting, ethereal and full of life as the notorious instrument itself. Catch it at the Star Court Theatre on Thursday 6th March at 7.30pm – a must see! The Star Court in Lismore will also be screening a short documentary, The Lismore Lantern Parade, a call to arms to support for LightnUp – the local lantern artists behind the iconic parade. Last year LightnUp Inc was given notice to leave their home of 12

years. A search for alternative rental accommodation was fruitless, and without a place to store the lanterns and a workshop to build them in, they faced closure. It had long been LightnUp’s dream to find a permanent home, so they decided to purchase a building to continue its work with lanterns and light. LightnUp is desperately trying to raise a $30,000 deposit to move into a new premises to house their work and activities for the community. Come down and show your support for this unique home-grown initiative and ensure that their beautiful lanterns continue to lighten up your winter solstice every year! Lismore Lantern Parade

is screening before the familyfriendly feel-good musical Felix, on Sunday 9th March at 5.30pm.

The Regent in Murwillumbah kicks off its festival on Friday 7th March with the widely acclaimed The Deflowering of Eva van End, a satirical look at a dysfunctional family whose doubts and insecurities are turned on their head by an Adonis-like German exchange student. A witty, sincere and moving film, it has already been nominated for several international film festival awards. And there are plenty more great flicks to choose from in the coming pages. Enjoy!

Photo: Jensta

Besides the anticipation of the Oscars awards ceremony, BBFF will also be launching a very special new award in recognition of incredible talent. During the evening we will be launching the 2015 Best Actor Award – symbolising BBFF’s gratitude, acknowledgment and respect for an actor displaying unique and rare skills during next year’s 2015 festival. Festival Director J’aimee

Skippon Volke says, “At BBFF we believe that awards should be based on merit, not gender – and that’s why we are proud to launch the Best Actor award, regardless of gender, for the 2015 festival next year.” To date, non-gender-specific awards in major ceremonies are a rare commodity. The Grammys have in recent years consolidated their awards for best artists in various categories into one award

However, today, the majority of awards ceremonies celebrate acting, with a clear distinction in gender. EXPERIMENTAL SHOWCASE In a drop in and out gallery setting each year BBFF presents a quirky collection of experimental films from all around the world. Stay for five minutes or sit back and allow yourself to drift to into the sub-consciousness of 20 cinematic artists asking you to share their strange new worlds. These films will be screened free upstairs in the Filmmakers Lounge from 1 till 4pm on Thursday March 6th. The films to be screened include:

Cinamnesia Australia Cinamnesia draws links between the twenty-four vertebrae in the human spine and the twenty-four frames per second in 16mm film while exploring the effects of film on the nervous system.

Collateral Atmospherics Australia

A poetic re-mapping of the natural landscape; recording the luminous, textural and fluid qualities of altered anthropogenic landscapes.

Cosmic Flower Unfolding USA

A constant flow of emerging and dissolving oceanic, futuristic, and mandala forms. It is a tribute to abstraction, its connection to the inner space we inhabit and how it can be externalised.

Dark Shadows Of The Gloom Serbia/Montenegro Past is meaningless, future is pointless and the present is dead, frozen eternity. Stuck in a place, its own mind, burdened by the empirical perspective, the human being has to break out.

Faustus: incident #375 Canada

Mephistopheles enlightens Faustus. 10 BBFF PROGRAMME GUIDE

Y2O

Kako Sam Ostao Bez Krila (How I Lost My Wings) Serbia/Montenegro

Resistance of the common man against all oppressive regimes as they change from Stalin, Tito, Milosevic up to Tadic, shown through surrealistic chronological and ritual inclinations.

Kırda Karanlık (Darkness In The Meadow) Turkey

LightSpin

Meat Head Australia

Meat Head is a fun and slightly horrifying interpretation of death and what happens to us afterward.

Nervous Person USA

The entwined stories of both a man anxiously waiting for someone at a strange event and of the little man inside his body who runs the gears and levers of his inner workings.

Sedna Of The Sea United Kingdom

The Liver United Kingdom A man dreams of his death and rebirth. The guardians of life and death accompany him through a surreal journey. As he calls on the spirits to linger awhile, he is re-birthed in various forms, identities and reflections.

The Moving Trilogy USA Four years in the making, each film was shot from a different wheeled land vehicle at varying speeds from the passenger side. Each has its own sense of rhythm and world.

Virtuos Virtuell Germany Synchronising to the music, abstract ink drawings ‘grow’ in an interplay of curiosity, timid encounters, dynamic pursuits and confrontation, stimulating many emotions.

Sumaglla

Y2O Canada

Cecilia is a woman enmeshed in a fantasy world of surreal objects. She is the custodian of Sumaglla, a living museum of antiques, arcane paintings, curios and collections in a beautiful but crumbling villa in Cuenca, Ecuador.

FRIDAY FEBRUARY 28 – SUNDAY MARCH 9, 2014 BBFF.COM.AU

HIGH SCHOOL & PRIMARY SCHOOL SESSIONS Each year we host screenings for hundreds of northern rivers students with the aim to educate, entertain and inspire. This year’s exciting selection highlights the diversity, creativity and innovation of filmmakers globally. At the heart of the festival’s schools program is an intent to encourage an informed, inspired and imaginative community with social equality. Film is a powerful means to open both the world, and the world of film, to our community’s youth. Films can expose young minds to different ways of seeing the world and expressing ideas. They can also inspire future careers in filmmaking! We’d like to thank the Star Court in Lismore, the Regent in Murwillumbah and the Byron Community Centre for providing the venues to host these important sessions. The films we will be presenting will include:

BYRON BAY INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2014

SISTERS ARE DOING IT FOR THEMSELVES Workshops and panels Saturday 8th March is International Women’s Day – an annual flagpole inspired by gender equality and to advocate change throughout the world in the advancement of women. And BBFF are celebrating womankind in our own way – through the visual creativity and eye-opening accomplishments of women filmmakers on our screens. According to one American study, the number of female directors of the US top 250 grossing films dropped to just 5 per cent in 2013. Big names such as Kathryn Bigelow and Sofia Coppola aside, female directors are woefully absent in most roll calls of new-release film in Hollywood. But this is not so at the Byron Bay Film Festival. We proudly offer around one-third of our programme from women directors – works that are wide ranging, eclectic and totally inspiring. And frankly, we’d like to see that number up at 50 per cent in years to come. In 2014, BBFF presents top picks such as the fast-paced peep into female sexuality A Woman’s Deeper Journey into Sex, directed by Brisbane filmmaker Sally McKenzie – a documentary mixed with animation and graphics, which follows the thread of whether women need emotional connection for good sex. Featuring porn star Jesse Jane, Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss, women paying for sex, Miss Cougar International and a scattering of rent-a-dreads. From an easily identifiable topic to a film exploring an element of female counterculture, Pretty Brutal takes us inside the intense world of roller derby, with self-styled skaters such as Pieces of Hate and Kid Vile immersing themselves in a full-contact arena that celebrates a female

community and then pits its members against each other come match day!

It’s hard not to become absorbed and inspired by Leslie Branagh’s intimate documentary, A Life Exposed, about the creatively brilliant Australian-born photographer Robyn Beeche, who transformed her career after visiting India’s Holi Festival, and then moved from a cutting-edge UK career to India permanently in 1985 to document the festivals and the region. Then in Bety Reis’s haunting A Guerra da Beatriz, East Timor’s first feature film, we are offered gripping insight into the troubled new nation’s women in combat as they defend their country torn apart by war and invasion. And don’t miss our new Spotlight on Byron Talent session, which highlights the acclaimed work of local filmmaker Hattie Dalton. However, ultimately, BBFF is delighted to present this exceptional 2014 selection of films that is both engaging and thought provoking, regardless of gender, celebrating a phenomenal wealth of talent both at home here in Australia, and throughout the world. All of the feature films directed by women will be playing at the Byron Community Centre on International Women’s Day, Saturday 8th March. Please come along and enjoy these excellent works. Tickets available from the Centre, or online at www.byroncentre.com.au. And if you think you might have an important story to tell through film, be sure to check out our workshops and discussion panels for new insights, inspiration and connections into the world of film.

Join some of the most notable and innovative figures in the film industry at BBFF this year as they share their unique insights and experiences, introduce you to new markets and possibilities, and expand your knowledge through a range of workshops, panels and networking opportunities focusing on the art and business of film. We hope you enjoy the programme! Additional information regarding the workshops and panels can be found at www.bbff.com.au.

Director’s Picks Our vast and varied programme has many highlights but one we’re especially proud of is the Australian premiere of Gasland Part II, the sequel to the EmmyAward-winning, Oscar nominated documentary that first shook the world and alerted communities worldwide to the issue of CSG mining. Director Josh Fox chose to have his Australian premiere here in the northern rivers in recognition of the passion of those in the anti-CSG movement in our region. Our Opening Night film When My Sorrow Died: The Legend of Armen Ra and the Theremin is not to be missed. It is many things including a feast for your eyes and ears, as is Covelong Point, from the makers of BBFF2008’s Best Film The Laya Project and Goldfrapp’s The Tales of Us. We have a number of amazing animations including the colourful Shave It, The Master’s Voice and Peleda, and the stunning The Rose of Turaida. Angels and Ghosts cleverly explores the effect of mental illness on loved ones while Endtrip gives us a taste of the beyond. I found Nordfor Sola (North Of The Sun), Gyre: Creating Art from a Plastic Ocean and the delightful Bricolage greatly inspiring. They represent a new genre of environmental films that delight while sharing important stories and points of view. New ways of thinking and relating to each other feature as themes throughout Chimeras, Crossroads: Labor Pains of a New Worldview, The Wisdom to Survive: Climate Change, Capitalism & Community and The Hot Potato. When My Sorrow Died: The Legend of Armen Ra & the Theremin Graphically stunning this is incredibly moving, entertaining, and revealing story of Theremin master Armen Ra’s extraordinary origins. A truly remarkable being, Armen tells his life stories, which read like mythology, yet are painfully true, with the sharpest of wit, a cutting sense of humour, and deep sincerity. His story is encouraging to the discouraged, his music is the soother of the sad, and his mission is to bring beauty and compassion into a world in chaos. He recounts his dynamic journey that mixes rare concert performances, candid interviews, and archive material with the magical power of music that can alchemise ancient sorrow into timeless beauty. Armen Ra & Producer Matt Huffman will be in attendance

The Gala opening film and party are held at the Byron Community Centre.

Gala Closing Film & Party BBFF’s Closing Night Gala starts with the film at Palace Cinema and the catered party will kick off over at the Byron Community Centre after. We’ll toast the creatives and talent behind our 2014 festival and enjoy some very special musical entertainment.

Rise of the Eco-Warriors A group of passionate and adventurous young people leave their known worlds behind to spend 100 days in the jungles of Borneo. Their mission is to confront one of the great global challenges of our time, saving rainforests and giving hope to endangered orangutans. Their task is enormous and the odds are against them. Jojo, an orphaned baby orangutan, is entrusted in their care and they must find a way to return her to her forest home. To do this, they need to build an orangutan rehabilitation centre and work with the local communities to protect their forest. They start a reforestation nursery and create a musical education show for local schools. Under the guidance of their mentor Dr Willie Smits, they introduce an innovative satellite monitoring system called Earthwatchers and enlist the help of school students around the world. The system is put to the test when the bulldozers move in and threaten the future of a nearby community living in a traditional longhouse. This is a story about what it takes it be an eco-warrior, an individual willing to step up and take action to avert a global

catastrophe taking place before our eyes. The eco-warriors represent a new generation, ready to face what is happening on our planet and willing to do something, no matter how small, to build a more humane and balanced world. For them, every individual matters, every action counts. Filmmakers in attendance

9

USA | 1:29:00 | Dir/Prod: Nicholas D. Wrathall | Documentary | 2013 | Byron Bay Premiere | Best Documentary Nominee

Sunday 2nd, 4.00pm – $12

This film balances Gore Vidal’s personal life and political views as we examine a man who lived at the centre of 20th century culture and politics in the US. From his friendships with Eleanor Roosevelt and President Kennedy to his famous debates with William Buckley and Christopher Hitchens. Through new interviews and historical footage, Gore draws dramatic conclusions on the fate of the nation in the modern age. This is an unashamedly candid and opinionated film. Clunes | 1:30:00 | Dir/Jeff Canin | Documentary | 2013 | NSW Premiere | Best Environmental Nominee 2 Degrees is about nothing less than the fight for the health of the planet we call home. The abstract idea of climate change is explored through the weaving of real and emotional. Our characters battle to mitigate the potential disasters of climate change and fight for climate justice, for it will be the developing world that bears the brunt of our profligacy and short sightedness. While An Inconvenient Truth alerted us to the problems facing the earth, 2 Degrees is the gripping and vital fight for a solution. Filmmakers in attendance

Byron Bay Elders tell us what love means to them. This short film is part of a larger Healthy Ageing Project being run out of the Byron Community Centre. Filmmakers in attendance

I’ll Miss You Someday Canada | 0:13:29 | Dir/Prod: Louis Lazaris | Short | 2013 | World Premiere During their first reluctant blind date, Addison and Ellis catch glimpses of a potential picture perfect future together when a disposable camera shows them all they could be if they were to give their relationship a shot.

Timor-Leste | 1:40:57 | Dir: Bety Reis & Luigi Acquisto | Prod: Stella Zammataro & Luigi Acquist | Feature | 2013 | Byron Bay Premiere | Best Dramatic Feature Nominee East Timor’s historic first feature film is the haunting, passionate story of one woman’s conviction to remain true to the man she loves and the country for which she fought. It is a bold reworking of the 16th century French ‘Martin Guerre’ story. This adaptation is transposed to Portuguese Timor during the Indonesian occupation. Sixteen years after Beatriz’s husband disappears during a brutal massacre by occupying Indonesian forces, she is troubled by his mysterious return: is he the young man she’d lost or is he an impostor? Chimeras

Australia | 0:05:00 | Dir/ Prod: Riley Blakeway | Young Australian Filmmaker | 2013 | Australian Premiere

Finland | 1:29:10 | Dir/ Prod: Mika Mattila | Documentary | 2013 | NSW Premiere

A short, splice-of-life piece documenting Californian street artist Evan Rossell during a painting trip to Detroit City. Shot entirely on 16mm and Super 8mm film stock.

Liu Gang, the only child of a humble rural family, gets a dream start for his art career as an American curator invites him to exhibit in the most prestigious art gallery in China. The film follows his metamorphosis from a humble photography graduate into a rising art star. While enjoying his new life within Beijing’s jet set world of westernised luxury, he starts to wonder who he is and where he is heading to. Every member of the van End family is preoccupied with his or her own peculiar fixation – be it father Evert’s Skype relationship with a boy in Africa (seemingly his only functional relationship), or mother Etty’s relentless tirades against her dope-dealing youngest son or praises for her eldest son about to marry. Trapped in the middle is the youngest – 15 year-old Eva – struggling for any attention or affection at all. When Veit, the Adonis German exchange student Eva invited, moves in, the family is shocked and each family member must confront his or her own doubts, insecurities, fears and desires. During Veit’s two-week stay, all five family members begin to reinvent themselves, led by former wallflower Eva, who begins a dramatic transformation.

Coney Island: Dreams for Sale

Offers a rare, sensitive glimpse of real poverty in New Zealand. It’s a picture of a place where people only go as a last resort; where hopes have evaporated into a limbo of emotional and physical subsistence. The film would be heartbreaking if it weren’t for the pride and humour of the people themselves.

Like Byron Bay, this once magnificent playground has survived many battles, but now faces its greatest enemy: corporate greed. Centre stage in the passionate struggle to protect the amusement park from an unscrupulous developer and a group of misguided politicians is newly turned political activist Dianna Carlin, owner of the celebrated Lola Star boutique. This Davidand-Goliath tale chronicles the courage and determination of a community to preserve the spirit and authenticity of a legendary American icon and an entire way of life against the threat of ruthless real estate development.
