Candidates have made claims of fear and smear as local election campaigning draws to its September 8 climax. A complaint over an electronic sign located on Ewingsdale Road has been lodged with Byron Shire’s election returning officer by Greens mayoral candidate Simon Richardson. The sign, which reads ‘Greens Giveaway Our Pool’ was placed on private land associated with the Woods’ campaign, according to Cr Richardson. Cr Richardson says, ‘Not only is the sign illegal under the electoral act [with] having no authorisation, but it contains a blatant untruth concerning the circumstances of the Byron pool which contravenes the rules for the content of election signage (you cannot tell lies). ‘This type of action is uncharacter- The hills were alive with the sound of harmony as 120 children from four different schools descended on istic of Councillor Woods and would Goonengerry Public for their belated Harmony Day celebrations. It’s been confirmed a Gold Coast developer has now collected the last in the set of retail buildings in the south Woolies plaza after buying the Byron Woolworths site for $18 million dollars last Thursday. And plans are already underway for a total redevelopment of the site, according to his commercial asset adviser and managing agent, Jamie Bourke from First National Commercial on the Gold Coast. Robert Badalotti from Azzura Developments also owns the proposed Dan Murphy’s site and above it the Dendy cinemas, which announced last week it would be closing shortly. But there still remains hope for the presence of the movie theatre on the site. Mr Bourke told The Echo he has already been approached by five separate cinema companies looking to take over the site in the Woolworths Plaza. ‘I am in negotiations with two theatre operators right now’, says Mr Bourke. ‘I have another three who continued on page 3

The unsuccessful bid by Cr Richardson attempted to broaden the independent investigation, specifically to do ‘an appraisal into the appropriateness of the degree of specialisation of licence assessment panel members… the degree to which crossreferencing of tenders was conducted and recommendations as to what
would be a better methodology.’ Additionally it sought to change the licence fee criteria to be a set fee, based on market value, and be recategorised as ‘mandatory’. Concerns from opposing councillors at the meeting was that it would muddy the review process already in action.
