Rukkus fully sick Last week was Youth Week and on Friday the Rukkus Youth Festival was held in Mullumbimby. The skate comp was a great success with many local skaters enjoying the Mullumbimby skate park. In the evening the dance party at the Mullumbimby Leagues Club grounds saw about 700 local youth enjoy a drug and alcohol free night with DJ entertainment. Byron Shire Mayor Jan Barham said, ‘I want to applaud the organisers of the event, especially Mullumbimby High student Baylee Johnson. I was so impressed with

the positive environment that was created for the event and Baylee obviously put in an enormous amount of energy to create a successful event. Also the many volunteers who supported the event deserve recognition also. ‘There are few opportunities for young people to have events and they can’t happen successfully without the support of the whole community. So thanks to youth coordinator Belle Arnold and a team of volunteers as well as the Mullumbimby Leagues Club and the sponsors of Youth Week events.’

Story & photo Lou Beaumont Saturday April 28 is the NSW Fire Brigades’ (NSWFB) annual Open Day, with fire stations across the state opening their doors to the public between 10am and 2pm. Bangalow Station Commander Westblade wants to invite residents to visit their local NSWFB fire station to meet the fire officers, inspect the fire engines and obtain fire safety tips. Commander Westblade

said now was a good time to take simple fire safety precautions in preparation for the cooler months. ‘Open Day is a great opportunity for the entire family to learn about how to protect themselves from fire and what to do if there is a fire in the home, including calling Triple Zero (000) for the NSW Fire Brigade,’ said Cmdr Westblade. ‘Winter is the worst season for fires. Between June 1 and 31 August

31, 2006, there were 1,328 residential fires, which represented 30% of all home fires, or 4,433, for the entire year. ‘As we move into winter, it is important that people make sure their smoke alarms are working, that they prepare and rehearse a home escape plan, and check electric blankets, power cords and heaters for damage. continued on page 2

Byron Coastline Management Committee. The Plan will be based on the work already undertaken as part of the Coastline Management Study and Plan process as required under the Coastal Protection Act 1979. Byron Shire Mayor Jan Barham said Council has already identified the environmental and recreational, landscape and amenity values of the Byron Coast in the Coastline Values Study and examined the nature and extent of coastal hazard in the Hazard Definition Study.

Both these studies were adopted by Council in 2000. ‘Council identified coastline management issues and assessed the options for management of coastal hazards in the Coastline Management Study,’ Cr Barham said. ‘Council will continue with planned retreat to manage risk associated with coastal hazards. This policy has been in place since 1988. ‘The development of the plan is being overseen by the Coastline continued on page 2
