The annual Bangalow Billy Cart Derby is under a month away, to be run on Sunday May 17. The main street of Bangalow becomes a race track for one day a year and this year there is a new attraction. The Schools Billy Cart Challenge Race will be run as a separate race. All primary schools are invited to enter, and as an added incentive $1,000 in prize money will be given to the P&C association of the
Bikram
winning school and $500 to the runner-up school. The cart drivers will be primary school students 12 years and under. Organiser Tony Heeson said, ‘We are very keen to introduce these races as we feel that teaching children road safety can’t start early enough. The NSW Police Department, NRMA, youth services, local community Groups and shire councils all support this event. Just imagine brightly painted billy carts with catchy names, then add scores of kids cheering for their
school, competing in traditional rivalries, such as Byron v Mullumbimby. It’ll be fantastic fun.’ Mark your calendars for Sunday May 17. If you are interested in spon-
soring, volunteering or participating please contact Tony Heeson 6687 2580 or 0419 715 098 or at wallaby@nor. com.au. Visit www.bangalowbillycart. com.au for the derby schedules.
CORRECTION: In last week’s Echo the front page story regarding the Fletcher Street development misquoted Mayor Jan Barham, and as a result might have implied that Tom Mooney wanted trees removed when he was the sole developer. In fact while the Land and Environment Court assessment regarding traffic impacts and road works approved the removal of five trees under the original DA, Tom Mooney is still a member of the development group that has negotiated with Council to save four of those five trees, while still complying with DA conditions. The Echo regrets the error.
