Indulge yourself with the Northern Rivers’ tastiest offerings! FREE ~ Issue #7, Summer 2024 ~
~ Welcome ~
There is nothing quite like heading into summer in the Northern Rivers. Local or visitor or a blend between, it is the time of year when the sun shines and the evenings lengthen – the perfect time to get out and about enjoying everything from the local cafes to arranging high-end festive season events.
The best part is that you have so much diversity at your fingertips, from beaches to hinterland, from local produce to jazz afternoons – there are just so many options to explore and experience. The beach is always a draw with the long white sand a beautiful place to hang out, from the early mornings till late at night, and with such great cafes and restaurants, from Ballina to Byron to Fingal, there is always a spot to find a snack, a meal, or just a refreshing juice or your favourite cocktail.
While the region is so well-known for its beaches there is no denying the delights to be found in exploring the hills and dales that surround us here. From the amazing walks and waterfalls, to the delightful hinterland cafes and restaurants, there is no shortage of special opportunities, eateries, picnic spots, or waterholes to be discovered and enjoyed. From the
delights of Newrybar and Federal with their local village vibes, to the fun and funky delights of Mullumbimby or the foothills of Wollumbin (formerly called Mount Warning) there is plenty to unearth as you take a trip through the Northern Rivers and everything it has to offer.
Then there is getting into the local produce through local markets, roadside stalls, and the innovative creativity of many in the region. Local stalls make delightful breakfasts at the farmers’ markets, where you can enjoy local musicians. Jazz Sundays at the Three Blue Ducks are accompanied by face-painting and pony rides – there is a little something for everyone.
Now is the time to look around, remember what makes the Northern Rivers so special, and find that experience or place you’ve always wanted to try. It’s time to call some friends, book a table at a great cafe or restaurant, or pick up some local produce and head to a favourite spot to catch up, check in, and relax for a moment or two before getting on with busy lives, getting those festive season orders done, and celebrating life, love and the challenging but wonderful world we live in.

Mullum Farmers Market
The award-winning Mullum Farmers Market is a renowned local institution that is celebrated both nationally and internationally. Every Friday morning, the picturesque Mullum Showgrounds transform into a bustling marketplace. Over 75 stalls showcase the region’s finest produce, from fresh, organic vegetables to artisanal bread and gourmet cheeses. Beyond the delectable food and delicious breakfast choices, the market offers a vibrant atmosphere with live music, kids’ activities, and free workshops on sustainable living and healthy eating.

Organigrow Eggs
Bringing the best eggs to market involves a lot of hard but satisfying work. Before sunrise, the morning rounds check that all the hens are well, the drinkers are cleaned, and chickens that aren’t well are separated from the others and nursed. In large enclosures, the hens are free to roam between the perching houses (where they sleep and nap), the nesting houses, and the feeding lines where they can feed freely, during the day, on choice grain. Later in the morning, the hens are let out to graze all day on the vast pastures, sheltered by the wide variety of fruit and nut trees that Simon, the owner and manager, planted on the farm 20 years ago. In the evening, the feeders shut and the hens return from the pastures to the perching houses where they settle down. The second set of rounds start, to make sure all is still well and to close the chickens in for the night, protecting them from foxes and other predators.
Once a week, Simon loads his truck and delivers his eggs. This means your local store has the freshest real-pasture-fed, free-range eggs, rich in omega-3 and nutritionally superior. A true taste sensation.

The delight of eating in nature
We are blessed to live in a region of rare natural beauty, so make the most of it – pack your picnic basket with luscious goodies and get amongst it!
Australia is about sunshine and outdoors as we head into the summer season, and that gives us an amazing range of opportunities to enjoy plenty of outdoor foodie experiences.
Whether it is a sophisticated al fresco dining situation, gathering the best local produce at the market to eat on the grass while listening to some music, or enjoying a special picnic basket at your favourite waterfall, there is no shortage of options for having fun over the summer months with partners, family, and friends.
If it is picnicking that delights your senses then there are a great range of opportunities to pick up fresh produce and enjoy it in style, either at the renowned beaches throughout the Northern Rivers or at a delightful river spot – or perhaps a hidden waterfall?
Killen Falls is one spot where a picnic is a great option. To walk to the bottom of the falls, enjoy your delights and return, make sure you leave yourself at least an hour. For those who might be into taking along a prepared picnic then look no further than The Velvet Pear and their delicious grazing boxes.
Not everyone is into a bushwalk and The Velvet Pear can also recommend a romantic picnic spot tucked away in the hinterland, a riverside dining spot with family and friends, or help you deliver a delightful beach gathering.
‘We are able to provide you with what you need for a wide range of outside eating adventures,’ says Stephanie from The Velvet Pear.
‘The Byron Bay region is a playground of inspiration for al fresco dining and picnicking! Our grazing boxes are curated with the freshest seasonal local produce, premium artisan cheeses, delicious accompaniments
and sweet delicacies, and we can also create a styled experience with full set-up and pack-down included.
‘A recent client requested an abundant, fully-styled grazing table for her milestone birthday in a paddock in Mullumbimby with 40 guests, a band, and a hot-air balloon to boot!’
If you are looking to choose your own produce then there are some amazing farmers’ markets in Mullumbimby and Byron Bay that provide visitors and locals alike with some of the freshest produce in the region.
‘What people love about the Mullum Farmers Market is that we are so shaded here by beautiful fig trees where we have seating for about 150 people. With all the best fresh produce, music, and drinks, it is one of the best breakfast places around,’ said Allie Godfrey, the Mullum Farmers Market manager.
From Japanese and Indonesian to rustic Argentinian food there is an amazing range of food and drinks stalls at this market that can either give you a great outdoor foodie experience or supply you with amazing ingredients to make your own favourite dishes.
Kylie from the Byron Farmers Market says they provide a great range of produce that local market stalls also use to turn into delicious meals that can be eaten on site, or off on your beach or hinterland adventure.
‘Using local produce from the local farmers our stallholders create everything from delicious Asian food, or rustic Italian, to the favourite bacon and egg roll. There is a whole bunch of stuff to buy that is such great quality that you hardly have to do anything. You can pick up fresh seafood to take onto the beach, or enjoy amazing heirloom tomatoes with mozzarella cheese, basil and oil
to make a perfect picnic and beach fare. Or just enjoy something as simple as rice cakes from Marlivale Farm (local dry rice farmers) – just spread a nut butter such as pecan or macadamia, then maybe add cheese and tomato and top off with some edible flowers? One young woman was recently just sitting listening to the music and enjoying a dozen oysters – what a great way to start your day.’
If you are thinking local then you can really take advantage of some of the most beautiful picnic and dining spots throughout the region. You can explore the foothills of Wollumbin (formerly Mt Warning), the beaches at Fingal, Ballina and Byron, or the walking trails, or take a chance to see Minyon Falls or Hells Hole. If you want to get up close and personal with these beautiful spots you need to be ready to take your picnic for a walk – but at Minyon Falls you can also just enjoy a gentle walk to the head of the falls and the picnic spots, in the rainforest and by running creeks, that abound and are accessible to all ages and abilities.
If you are going to pick up some delicious local produce to accompany your market purchases, for a picnic or outside dining experience, at home or on the beach – or just something special to keep in the cupboard – then you can’t go past adding some of the most delicious and enticing sauces, relishes, chutneys, and Australian tea. You can accompany any successful al fresco dining or picnic experience with the locally-produced delights found at Lambruk Pantry. They have been working with the freshest produce to make high-quality local products.
‘We use one cup of sugar to 20 kilos of produce and this is what makes our products a good option, for everyone but also they are diabeticfriendly and low sugar,’ explained proprietor Paige Brierley, who has
been running Lambruk Pantry for the past four years.
‘We are also using produce that is straight from the farm – high-quality produce that is naturally ripened. Our pear and blackberry sauce is the most tart and you can use it with cheese like a quince paste, or it nicely sweetens up with cheese. In comparison our mango, blackberry, and sparkling sauce goes well on pancakes, waffles and those kinds of things; but people switch it coming to Christmas and summer and use it with lamb roasts,’ said Paige as she talked about the wide diversity of uses for their products.
If making your own meal from scratch isn’t quite what you are looking for, or perhaps you have a range of fussy children and adults, then you should be looking up Dinner is Served.
Claudia Lawrence originally began the business with the idea of helping mums on holidays with getting healthy, fresh meals on the table with minimum fuss.
‘We started supplying high-end prepared meals for people coming to the Byron region, especially for really busy mums and families,’ explained Claudia.
The impact of Covid meant that Dinner is Served had to change with the times and Claudia has expanded to providing ready-made meals to order for delivery as well as directly to customers from their shop in Ballina.
‘We do fresh lunches, take-out meals, or take-home meals, and people come from far and wide to access them,’ she says.
It is a great way to have a meal, or a range of meals, that you can eat while you are on holidays, out in nature, or just when you are having a busy day and need an extra bit of help to get things done.

Time to celebrate family, friends and lots of festive season cheer
It is that time of year, and as we head into the festive season the calendar is filling up with work Christmas parties, catchups with friends and planning the big family Christmas lunches and dinners. It’s important to sneak in a little one-on-one time with the ones we love.
There are an amazing range of places you can book your Christmas work party or book a more intimate venue to get together with some friends to catch up. You could be down by the coast in Ballina at Kelp restaurant with a great bar, delicious seafood, and mix of personal dining or function venue, or you might head into the hinterland at Buckley’s Chance or Harvest.
‘We are currently doing evenings called “Buckley’s by Night”, with a sexy, sharing-orientated menu curated by our executive chef Bret Cameron (formerly Harvest and Three Blue Ducks),’ said Buckley’s’ Nat Taubman.
‘The evenings can be enjoyed either in our historic dining room or out on our deck under our cute festoon lighting.’
The dynamic spaces of Buckley’s Chance provide an extensive range of options for events of all sizes –whether you have less than ten, or 120 guests.
The Ocean Shores Tavern is definitely worth checking out for cool, free spaces to hold your festive season get togethers. They have a range of spaces for events both large and small, and of course have a great bar with a range of catering options to suit all budgets.
If you feel like heading to the hills then you can take a peek at the
historic Newrybar Village, relax and enjoy a delicious breakfast, lunch or dinner at Harvest – but that is certainly not where your options end. Harvest is thinking ahead for those big ‘family and friends’ events and has lots of delicious food you can order to make your day special –from Christmas Day hams to salads, sweets, pastries and more.
‘Our deli is always stocked high with Christmas goodies such as Mt Warning hams, glazed in our beautiful 120-year-old wood-fired oven, fruit mince pies, rocky road and everything you could want for the Christmas table along with gifts,’ said Harvest’s Samuel Dalgarno.
‘Perhaps the most exciting and loved part of what we offer here at Harvest is our online ordering for Christmas Day. People order online via our website, harvest.com.au, (we just launched a new website too), everything that they need for their Christmas tables, and then they come and pick up in the days leading up to Christmas.’
The pressure of putting those important meals on the table, and clearing up, can take its toll and for anyone looking for a special way to celebrate in a beautiful location can take advantage of the inspired menus at Azure Bar and Grill at Elements of
Byron. Not only can you book your end-of-year work celebrations there, you can also take family and friends to celebrate Christmas in style and indulge in a sumptuous Christmas buffet lunch or Christmas dinner.
‘Azure Bar and Grill this Christmas promises a memorable holiday experience featuring the finest local ingredients, all set against the beautiful backdrop of Elements of Byron where you can gather with loved ones and enjoy a festive meal,’ said Elements of Byron’s Leila Stephenson.
For those looking to have a bit of a relax with kids, some music and catch up with friends and family, Three Blue Ducks has a great range on offer from Thursday’s ‘locals night’, to Sunday Jazz and kids’ pony rides on the weekends, to daily free animal feeding tours at 10.30am on the farm.
‘On Sunday there is jazz on the grass in the afternoon, then live music and a Sunday roast every Sunday night,’ said Three Blue Duck’s Jeff Bennett.
‘For big groups, and businesses we have an event team here on site that tailor packages to the client. We do a lot of book-out events, with large groups in the restaurant, and also a fair bit of offsite catering at some of the epic properties in the area.

Our region’s thriving cafe culture
There’s something a bit magical about our region. Is it the natural world?
The incredible oceans, the ancient forests? Yes.
Is it the cultural dynamism of our local community? Yes.
Is it the beauty of the bay? Yes. Is it the sand on our feet, the hand out hitching, the bucket of fresh berries from the market? Yes.
Is it the cafes? The fact that we live in a regional area with a cafe culture that rivals Melbourne? Yes.
When we say ‘meet you at the cafe’, that could be one of many establishments. The only challenge is choosing which one! We are literally spoilt for choice.
And now we have beautiful, bright and breezy, outdoor summer dining. In winter it's nice to huddle indoors, but in summer, I want to be on the street. It's where the action is! In the Northern Rivers our cafes love to take their shoes off and stretch their toes. They say: relax, bring your dog, try our matcha latte and flip open your laptop and write your opus.
Or bring your friends and connect. Bask in the vibe!
When I first came to Byron Bay I went to the Byronian cafe. It was an institution. I’d sit and chat with singers and poets,
hat makers, glass blowers and real estate agents. It was where we found our common ground. It’s where we truly connected. The Byronian no longer lives in that foundation place, but the spirit lives on in Little Byronian.
Still located on iconic Jonson Street, but now at Mercato on Byron, it is out on the street – where the action is! Savita is a born-and-bred Byron local and the coowner, who has spent the last 20 years in the hospitality industry. The menu is a combination of Middle Eastern street food, pita pockets, and Modern Australian cuisine. And great coffee. I mean really great coffee. Roasted locally of course!
There are plenty of cafes around the Northern Rivers that are tucked in from the hustle and bustle of the street but also right there in the middle of the action. It’s coffee and community in a cup!
For a place to connect with authors, read a few books and have great conversations you can head to Miles & Henry Bookstore Cafe in historic Alstonville. Like the coffee houses of old you can get together with friends, chat about politics, or your favourite books, all while enjoying their fresh local produce from the cafe. It’s coffee and community in a cup!
If you prefer a setting that gives you a little bit of Aquarius Fest vibe then you might want to head to Mullumbimby and check out the range of cafes that have sprung up that let you connect
with vegan, vegetarian and outright alternative lifestyles.
One of the vibiest is Paséyo, which in Spanish means ‘a leisurely stroll, especially one in the evening when you talk to friends’. With a casual Mexican influence on the menu and a gorgeous outdoor hang, it’s perfectly named. There’s people everywhere talking to their friends!
If you are looking for the perfect blend of Australian cafe and culture then head over to Broken Head Caravan Park’s Aunties Cafe – it’s a great way to blend the two. The Aunties Cafe brings together a delicious menu inspired by local native foods. The cafe is named for the four Aunties that claimed Native Title for the Arakwals: Aunties Dulcie, Lorna, Linda and Yvonne. Part of the vision is showcasing Aboriginal foods so that everyone can have an authentic cultural experience through their taste buds.
The cafe culture throughout the Northern Rivers is diverse and inclusive, giving everyone the chance to taste, discover and experience the delights; from inner Byron cafe chic to sitting on the grass and enjoying a house-made blend of turmeric, roasted dandelion root and organic cacao.
So this summer, stretch your legs, and find yourself in one of our free open-air cafes. Pull up a seat, put on a smile. And let this magical place do what it does best. Deliver magic.

Crowd favourite menu items include smoked chilli scramble or a deluxe brekky roll for breakfast, delicious sticky chicken salad for lunch, or for dinner you’ll have trouble choosing between ‘The Big Prawn’ – grilled Ballina king prawns in smoked chilli butter, wood-fired pizza bread, or chicken liver parfait with red onion marmalade, Davidson plum and wood-fired bread.

Husk Farm Distillery
The home of Ink Gin and Husk Rum, Husk Farm Distillery, is nestled on the Messenger family’s beautiful 150-acre farm in the Tweed Valley. The destination was recently awarded the gong as the most popular experience in the wineries, breweries and distilleries category of the NSW Tourism Awards.
A scenic 45-minute drive from Byron Bay township, Husk has a strong farm-to-bottle philosophy, practising ‘full circle distilling’ where almost all waste is returned to the land via the cows, composting or collected for recycling. With a kitchen garden, cocktail bar and beautiful views, Husk is the perfect day trip from Byron for lunch and relaxation. Husk’s multi-award-winning classic, Ink Gin, is crafted and bottled at Husk Farm and was one of the first Australian gins on the market. Striving to capture the taste of local botanicals and the beauty of nature, Ink Gin was one of the first coloured gins and the first gin in the world to change colour naturally with tonic water.
Another pioneer, Husk Rum is Australia’s first and only single estate farm to bottle rum. This French style rum is made entirely from sugar cane grown, crushed and distilled on site, capturing the terroir of the region in every bottle, and now being exported to France and Europe. Come and explore how it all happens with tours, lunch and gorgeous views every day from 11am. Bookings recommended on weekends. 1152 Dulguigan Road, North Tumbulgum 02 6675 9149 www.huskdistillers.com @huskdistillery
