Tourist accommodation Kids get their own space at Show on the cards at The Pass Tourist accommodation at The Pass is one of the options the Cape Byron Trust has in mind in its amendments to its management plan. The draft amendment notes: ‘A range of options are [sic] available to provide refreshments at The Pass including a café or kiosk and/or mobile vendors. ‘Depending on the outcome of investigations into the provision of refreshment facilities, it may also be appropriate to consider redevelopment of the existing café building for visitor and tourist accommodation. ‘This option will have the benefit of providing an additional income stream to the Trust as well as providing an additional facility for visitors. All revenue raised on the Reserve is retained on the Reserve for the ongoing maintenance and improvement of visitor facilities and environmental protection. ‘The traffic management and site design of the car parking, vessel launching and picnicking areas is also being investigated to ensure improved
traffic flow, maximum car parking within the existing area, improved pedestrian access and visitor facilities. ‘Expressions of Interest are being called for a number of options for the provision of refreshments at The Pass. The options include continued use of the existing building as a café, redevelopment of the current building as a kiosk, a new kiosk in the existing picnic/ toilet area, and/or a mobile refreshment vendor.’ In a press release Cape Byron Trust chairperson Yvonne Stewart said, ‘The current lease on the building commonly known at The Pass Café has expired and repairs and environmental assessments are being undertaken on the building. In the meantime the Trust is keen to use this opportunity to consider the best options for the location and the users. ‘We are also looking at improvements to the carpark, vessel launching layout and visitor facilities at The Pass to maintain existing car parking areas continued on page 5
Kids in violent fight at Mullum Victoria Cosford
What started out as a harmless Halloween Party on Saturday night for a Year 9 Mullumbimby girl exploded into violence – with an 18 year old youth fighting to save his eye in a Brisbane hospital. According to Inspector Owen King, around 100 teenagers converged on the event, held at the Old Drill Hall. Police attended firstly at 9pm and confiscated water bombs, eggs and alcohol; they remained in the area until about 11.30pm. Three youths were taken home due to their intoxicated state and the 18-year old conveyed to a Brisbane hospital after a fight broke out with ‘unknown persons’ during which he was punched and kicked. Inspector King emphasised that ‘police have major concerns because no security was allocated to the event and due to its poor organisation’. At
this stage enquiries are continuing and a number of witnesses are being interviewed. The identity of the offender remains unknown and anyone with any information which might assist is asked to come forward. The Media Unit at Lismore Base Hospital had ‘no comment to make – it’s a police matter.’ According to one parent, the fight was due to ‘too much alcohol. An argument starts between two guys, one an “invader” from Byron, the other a turf-conscious lad from Mullum. ‘Another boy has head injuries from a beer bottle smashed over his head. Other kids are nursing injuries as well. My 15 year old son watched sickened as the boot went into the boys on the ground on Saturday night. ‘What is it going to take before this community wakes up to itself and seriously tackles this complex problem?’
