Work to start on Mullum Woolworths Eve Jeffery

Clipboard carrying representatives of Warburton Constructions visited businesses and homes along the northern end of Station Street, Mullumbimby, last week. Project manager Andrew Corbin was one of the reps alerting people to the change in traffic conditions which will affect the town over the next twelve weeks, as work begins on the Woolworths site and surrounding roadworks on June 7. Mr Corbin said that the work would begin on the road and the building site at the same time, with the road

having swale and kerb and guttering installed, along with stormwater drainage and a footpath. The building site will commence with the removal of grasses and the installation of necessary underground services. The most noticeable change for the immediate future will be the upgrading of the island at the western end of Argyle Street near Milk and Honey Pizza. The current small triangular traffic divider will be replaced with a roundabout similar in size to that at the western side if the Tyagarah interchange. Mr Corbin said that the tree in the centre of the area will remain.

Line honours in the inaugural Mullum to Bruns Paddle went to Josh Brown, above, from the Byron SLSC who came first in the board paddle from the Ferry Reserve caravan park. Kurt Tutt, below, was all smiles after the race as winner (and donor) of the first prize money, which he passed along to runner-up Alex Burns, who in turn donated half to the charities of the day. The weather gods were smiling on Brunswick Heads once again on Sunday when over 380 people paddled boards, canoes, kayaks and boats in the inaugural Mullum to Bruns Paddle. Conditions were perfect on the river with the outgoing tide and the run up to the road bridge calm yet competitive for those with the energy to give it all they had. Line honours went to 14 year old Josh Brown from the Byron SLSC who was first home in the SLSC Board Challenge from Ferry Reserve. He was followed closely by runner up Ela Heiniger, 13, from the Bruns SLSC. Once the board riders had completed their event, it was a tense wait for the winners in the Paddle Challenge and the Stand Up Paddle Challenge. The places were very tight with less than a few seconds between them. GoSeaKayak’s Kurt Tutt from Byron

after 45 minutes on the water, only a second before runners-up Alex Burns followed by brother Tom Burns. It was only another few minutes before the Stand Up Paddle (SUP) division had their inaugural champ, Dale Chapman, who had to duck to get under the bridge. Second and third in the section were Gavin Smith and Jay Gates and first woman over the line was also a SUP rider, Simone Horsefield. Hundreds settled in around the Soundshell after the races to enjoy a huge program of events which included free SUP lessons, entertainment, expert kayak advice, water safety and rescue demonstrations, water squirting fun, a rowing challenge and the all important Lucky Duck Race. The turnout for the day was far and Bay was first over the line and will go beyond the expectations of organisdown in history as the first Mullum to ers and the event, after one run, has Bruns River King. stamped itself as another great event Mullumbimby greengrocer Paul Medeiros makes a point at the onsite Land Kurt was first under the road bridge on the Brunswick Heads calendar. & Environment Court hearing in September last year.
