Mullum to Bruns Dancing on the lake of swans draws record crowds Eve Jeffery

Sunday saw the dawn of a glorious day for the third annual running of the Mullum to Bruns Fun Run and Walk. Over 1000 competitors took the chance to tread the tar on surfaces usually the realm of cars and trucks. A record number of runners entered the event and youngster Leigh Stewart from Goonellabah took the early lead from the pack starting at the Mullum Bowlo. The sixteen year old led the runners through town and pounded the pavement into the 80km zone narrowly keeping Andrew Arkinstall from Tallai at bay, but the lad lost some of his puff coming out of town and it was Arkinstall running in the 19-29 division who was first up the hills and by the time he reached Uncle Tom’s the race was won.

Last year’s record beaten To his credit Leigh managed to keep up a good pace and his second placed time over the line was a truly respectable 34.51.37 behind Andrew’s 34.18.15, both beating last

year’s record by over 40 seconds. Third placed Michael Ure came in almost a minute and a half behind Stewart and inaugural winner Adam Horton was not far behind with 36.14.69, a drop from his winning effort of 2008, but he has had a broken leg since then. First in the women’s divisions was Sharon Ryder from Currumbin, who past the post in a new record time of 40.42.89, carrying on the tradition of women coming home in the first 20. Hundreds of participants took the option to walk to the event and by all accounts had an enjoyable time, though many also made the event a soft option run without the pressure of competition racing. Crowds gathered at the end of the route to rest, enjoy the festivities and take the opportunity to enjoy a free massage. Organiser Mehil Beckerman thanked all those involved including the rescue service and other volunteers – without their help, the event could not run. All race results are already online at www.mullumtobruns.org.

him permission to speak from the tabletop truck other speakers had been afforded. When the speakers on the truck had finished, Mr Ebono approached the crowd to hand out flyers but a man confronted and abused him, pulled the flyers from his hand and threw them before shoving him hard in the chest and storming off, to the applause of other protesters. The assault was captured by television news cameras and screened on national news that night.

A protest rally at Tweed Heads on Saturday against marine parks turned ugly when Greens’ Richmond candidate Joe Ebono was jostled and shoved by protesters as he tried to explain the issue to them. The rally at Jack Evan Boat Harbour, which drew over 200 people, was organised by the local amateur fishing association but was used by Liberals federal election candidate Joan van Lieshout to campaign and push her support for the anti marineElderly woman stamps park lobby. It was one of the ugliest incidents to on leaflets date in the four-week long Richmond A shaken Mr Ebono was then campaign, sparked when Mr Ebono tried to talk to the hostile crowd after helped by Tweed Greens councilMrs van Lieshout had earlier refused lor Katie Milne to pick up the flyers

strewn around and the pair was heckled by hostile protesters. One elderly woman stomped on and ground in some leaflets which Cr Milne was about to pick up.

Not a political rally Asked by The Echo why she had not allowed Mr Ebono to speak on the issue at the public rally, Mrs van Lieshout said it was for the fishing protesters only and not a public or ‘political rally’ and that Mr Ebono was not invited by the organisers. The Tweed councillor and former mayor, who opened the rally with a fiery campaign style speech and closed it in similar fashion, denied her action of not allowing him the legitimacy of the podium for such continued on page 2
