RTN ‘shines a light on violence’ against women Reclaim the Night will be held in Byron Bay after a two year break and will be hoping to shine light on the issue of sexual violence and violence against women and children. Reclaim the Night will take place on Friday October 29 in Denning Park, Main Beach Byron Bay (near the peace pole) and will include an array of activities, speakers and entertainment. This year the theme is about ‘shining a light on domestic violence’ and so a lantern parade has been planned to commence at 6.30pm, which will weave through Byron township taking the message of freedom from violence for all women and children in our streets. Activities and entertainment will commence from 4pm, including badge making, lantern decorating, face decorating and there will be hip hop performers, the Songbirds choir and The Arawkal Dubay dancers. The Chrysallis Girls Group will be speaking and an open mic session for women to share their stories and experiences on the day. In the event of wet weather, the Reclaim the Night event will be held on the Verandah at the Byron Bay Community Centre from 4 pm to 7 pm. Reclaim the Night is a global movement which organises

peaceful protests against violence against women and children. Reclaim the Night also promotes strength and survival. It represents a claim for basic human rights to live in freedom from discrimination and fear of violence. ‘In 2010, violence against women is still a big issue affecting the social, emotional, physical and financial wellbeing of individuals and families,’ say RTN organisers. ‘Fifty-seven per cent of Australian women have experienced at least one incident of physical or sexual violence, and domestic violence is the largest risk factor for women’s health between the ages of 15 to 44. ‘Women have made great changes over the last 30 years‌ Unfortunately there is still more work to be done as women still live with the threat of sexual violence.’ Men wanting to support Reclaim the Night are asked to gather along the line of Jonson Street to cheer. If you are interested in getting involved, please contact Neroli Jager from the Women’s Resource Service on 6684 4299 or Belle Arnold at Byron Shire Council on 6626 7225.
