TELEVISION GUIDE Wednesday June 13 to Tuesday June 19, 2012 Highlights this week Since most of the movies this week are crap, we thought we’d look at a couple of new series which have considerable merit. No surprise they’re both on ABC1. 1. Shaun Micallef’s Mad As Hell (Friday 8pm and repeated on Sunday at 10.05pm) has been a consistently funny satire on current affairs (and the English language) so far, as long as Micallef is not inveigled into cross-promotional interviews for movies such as Mabo. The Goon Show is one of his major influences, and you can see it in the style of the program, which is more absurdist than many Australian outings. More at www.abc.net.au/tv/madashell. 2. In our choice of forensic dramas The Body Farm (Saturday, 8.30pm) beats out the American CSI clones and its more lugubrious and self-important British counterpart Silent Witness. Despite some gross examples of latex and fibreglass moulded into human body parts – what fun they must have making those! – this drama has a sense of humour about itself. This is helped by the excellent cast which includes an Asbergic scientist who apologises to insects he kills and a detective inspector played by Keith Allen, the chap who did the best camp version ever of the Sheriff of Nottingham.
