TELEVISION GUIDE Wednesday June 20 to Tuesday June 26, 2012 Highlights this week 1. Woody Allen (seen right with Diane Keaton) has had an illustrious career as a filmmaker, albeit a little raggedly in his later years. He has been able to make cinema goers laugh and think, which is more than many directors achieve. ABC2 pays tribute to the man and his work this Saturday, beginning with Woody Allen: A Documentary at 8.30pm and followed at 10.15pm by the very popular Annie Hall, which won four Oscars including Best Picture. 2. Penelope Cruz and Tom Cruise star in a perversely dreamy thriller called Vanilla Sky (Eleven, Sunday, 8.30pm) – an intriguing mix of scifi, erotica, lucid dreaming and romance. This is the American version directed by Cameron Crowe; some reckon the 1997 original Abre los ojos (Open Your Eyes) by Alejandro Amenábar and Mateo Gil was better, but you’ll find much of interest here. The earlier version might have provided inspiration to Richard Linklater’s 2001 Waking Life, a meditation on lucid dreaming. ‘Sanity is a madness put to good uses; waking life is a dream controlled.’ – George Santayana.
