Television Guide Wednesday August 15, to Tuesday August 21, 2012 Highlights this week 1. Charlie Sheen stars in Platoon (ABC2, Saturday, 10.05pm) Oliver Stone’s seminal film about the Vietnam War and the horrors of war in general. Stone himself was in the war and his experience of killing an enemy soldier deeply affected his view of life. Platoon is all grit and terror, and no glory. Interestingly Stone had hoped that Jim Morrison would play the lead, and the script was with the singer when he died in Paris. 2. Jean Seberg (sadly persecuted to suicide in 1979 by an FBI smear campaign) and Jean-Paul Belmondo star in the original (1960) version of Breathless (SBS2, Sunday, 10.30pm), streets ahead of the 1983 vanilla imitation starring Richard Gere. Jean-Luc Godard’s movie is regarded as one of the forerunners of the French New Wave, with its amoral anti-hero and handheld camera style. Like Stone, Godard took on the Vietnam War as his subject in other films.
