To build or to renovate? Angela Cornell There are two main choices people face when finding a home to live in: They can buy a block of land and build a home or they can buy an existing home and renovate it to suit their needs and reflect their personal style. As one of the area’s leading real estate agents, Sharon McInness from First National Byron Bay has seen many amazing homes. Most of Sharon’s real estate dealings are with people she has helped before because she is known not only for her professionalism but also for her empathy and wisdom when it comes to buying and selling. Sharon has bought, sold, built and renovated many times, so she understands what people are going through. Here are her insights on the question of building or renovating.

Sharon says her approach to renovating is always the same: ‘Work within the existing constraints of the property as much as possible and have empathy not only for the style of the property but also for the locale.’ ‘This approach will help you keep to your timeline and your budget and help to maximise your resale value.’ Sharon has also built homes and she appreciates the ability to customise the design to your needs, although she acknowledges that, with both approaches, sometimes you’re faced with things you weren’t expecting. About 18 months ago, ready for their next move, Sharon and Tony started looking at what was available to buy. Although they were open to either building or buying an existing home, their not-negotiable criterion was that they had to be able to walk to the beach. After some looking, Sharon and Tony bought a block of land at beachside Suffolk Park, expecting once again for the process to be relatively smooth and that they would be living in their new home by now. Unfortunately that is not how it has unfolded.
