Back in 2000, Splendour in the Grass started as a boutique festival. According to co-founders Paul Piticco and Jessica Ducrou, they collaborated with the vision to create ‘a little festival’. A camping event. A winter escape. That was twelve years ago, since then Splendour has grown into quite arguably one of the country’s seminal music festivals. There has been much debate about the future of Splendour in the Grass in the Byron Shire, with residents near the proposed Yelgun site clearly unhappy about the event’s future in their neighbourhood. But every year as winter approached it seemed strange that the festival that had forged much of its identity around the counter culture identity of Byron Bay was happening in Woodford and not here. Local businesses and music lovers enthusiastically welcome Splendour back to its birthplace, Belongil Fields for the 2012 event. Splendour has become much more than just a music festival, with organisers ensuring that programming creates a unique cultural event. As Paul Piticco acknowledges in an interview at a Splendour forum back in 2010 ‘people primarily come here for the four or five particular acts’ but it’s the events like the forums, the conversations, the art installations, the street theatre and the environmental profile that is key in expanding the Splendour vision. This isn’t the stuff that sells tickets, this is the stuff that makes a great festival. It’s not about extending the program, it’s about broadening the vision, and Splendour have created an impressive youth event that even old farts like me get a kick out of. At 44 I have to admit when I walk into a festival like Splendour I feel like someone’s mother. I am someone’s mother. I will have kids attending the event. But I can feel the excitement, that primal surge of human connection that comes about with something as joyously pagan as a festival. It’s electrifying. It’s ancient. And its now. Young people aren’t in their bedrooms downloading tunes or uploading their Facebook, they’re together as a generation forging identity. Personally I don’t think anything gets more exciting than that. In my years of attending

Big Easy Express
Featuring Mumford & Sons At the Forum, Thursday 7pm For the campers who are settling into Splendour on Thursday, ease yourself in with a sneak screening of Big Easy Express onsite at 7pm. 3 bands, 6 cities, 1 train, and thousands of miles of track… Big Easy Express documents a cinematic musical journey of Indie folk heroes Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Tennessee’s Old Crow Medicine Show, and Britain’s acclaimed Mumford & Sons. Climb aboard a beautiful vintage train in California, setting out for New Orleans, Louisiana on a ‘tour of dreams’. The resulting film from this journey is nothing short of magical. Part road movie and part concert film, Big Easy Express bears witness to the birth of a new musical era. With poignancy and beauty, Malloy documents these incredible musicians as they ride the rails and wow the crowds, from Oakland… to New Orleans.

Splendour I’d have to say that it’s an idealic foray into youth culture. While some young people get a bit messy, the general vibe of good will is fierce. It’s a chilled-out space. A little utopian break from the dreary slog of the everyday. Kids go to a festival for the headliners, but come away having been exposed to conversations and ideas. Splendour is about music as a whole picture, about the celebration of Youth culture in all its glory. I only wish that I was 21. I predict this year is all about the beard. BYO Beard.

This debate highlights a very important question for the younger generation who’ve grown up never knowing a world without the internet. Everyone knows the Internet is a force for political freedom and democracy, right? After all, we all saw the Kony 2012 video as it went viral, read how Facebook and Twitter messages fed the Arab Spring uprisings and livestreamed the Occupy Wall Street movement as it exploded worldwide. But maybe, considering consumers have only had access to the Internet en masse for about 15 years, we’re actually jumping the gun in declaring the technology the best thing for liberty since the Magna Carta? Hear some of our most expert – and humourous – voices on democracy and technology as they go head-to-head in the Forum’s annual debate. Join Independent MP Rob Oakeshott, currently one of the six crossbench politicians holding the balance of power in the Australian Parliament, The Chaser’s Craig Reucassel, Julian Assange’s close colleague, author and academic Dr Suelette Dreyfus, Hungry Beast journalists and tech geeks Dan Ilic, Marc Fennell and Monique Schafter, securities journalist Patrick Gray, new-breed citizen journalist and professional Twitterer Asher Wolf, whose Twitter account was subpoenaed by the Boston Police Department last year during the Occupy protest, and tech entrepreneur Leon Hill, the self-made 20-something millionaire who founded uSocial, the first company in the world to sell Facebook friends and Twitter followers to corporations and governments, as they vie for your vote on whether the internet is democracy’s friend or foe.
Jack White Jack White is one of the most prolific, unique and renowned artists of the past 15 years. In January he announced the upcoming release of his debut solo album ‘Blunderbuss’, which will drop globally on April 20. He’s performing a string of tour dates across the world in support of this release including a recent blistering set at SXSW and shows at Lollapalooza and Fuji, with a set list that includes a heady mix of White Stripes, Raconteurs, Dead Weather and tracks from his new solo album. He tours with both an all-male and an all-female band and only decides on each show day which band he’ll play with. Jack is back and out of the box.

At the Drive-In
Undeniably one of the one most influential posthardcore bands of all time, iconic Texan punk rockers At the Drive-In are back. It has been over a decade since the band released their seminal album ‘Relationship of Command’, blew away Aussie fans on the 2001 Big Day Out tour and announced their decision to call it quits. After blowing fans away at Coachella Splendour feature At the Drive-In performing their only Australian show.
Howler Minneapolis five-piece and NME favourites Howler are a band to watch in 2012. The brainchild of the band’s 19-year-old front-man Jordan Gatesmith, who always had a natural affinity towards early 60s American rock and pop, as well as 80s punk, Howler’s debut release ‘America Give Up’ was a triple j feature album earlier this year. They just pulled out some blazing shows at SXSW and they’re set to do the same at Splendour.
DZ Deathrays We’re only just past the halfway point of the 2012 but it’s fair to say that DZ Deathrays have already had quite the year. Having released their critically acclaimed debut album ‘Bloodstreams’ earlier this year, Shane Parsons and Simon Ridley have spent the majority of this year doing what they do best… tearing up venues with their ferocious live show all over the globe. It’s scary to think that things are only going to get more brutal. Having just completed a six-week tour and 30+ shows in North America with Bass Drum of Death (Fat Possum Records), DZ Deathrays have been turning heads over and over again including most recently those at Pitchfork and SPIN who both gave the band’s debut LP favourable reviews (7.4 – Pitchfork). Soon after Splendour in the Grass the Brisbane duo will be packing their bags once more and relocating to the northern hemisphere for the rest of the 2012 having just been announced on the prestigious Leeds and Reading Festival.

PANEL: “Rock Gods: Supernatural Talent or a Talent for the Supernatural?” At the Forum, Saturday 2pm From ancient tribal worship chants and baroque hymns to the slavery origins of gospel songs, music and spirituality have long been intertwined. The Beatles experienced one of their most creative periods after a visit to the Maharishi in India and Johnny Cash was a devout Christian for much of his life, penning his signature song The Man In Black at least in part about Jesus. More recently, Beck’s Gamma Ray is believed to have been inspired by his belief in Scientology while for Ben Lee and his mentor, late Beastie Boy MCA/ Adam Yauch, creativity was stirred by their Buddhist meditative faith. But what comes first – musical genius or divine inspiration? Does it take supernatural talent to be a rock god? Or just belief in the supernatural? Join the flock as they gather to hear the gospel and heresy according to Australia’s favourite faith-prodding documentary film-maker and broadcaster John Safran, writer/comedian/star of the award-winning comedy show God Is Bullshit Catherine Deveny, The Chaser’s Craig Reucassel, triple j breakfast host and atheist Tom Ballard, singer/songwriter Kav Temperley (Eskimo Joe, 50 Years of Dylan), Spiderbait’s Kram (who once penned a punk anthem about going on a roadtrip with Jesus) and World Vision’s national advisor for youth, faith and activism Jarrod McKenna.
It’s been three years since Bloc Party toured Australia – stampeding across the country and selling over 40.000 tickets. They’ll head back to Splendour in 2012 with a set list that includes tracks from a new album as well as all the tunes we love them for!
Hilltop Hoods The Hilltop Hoods return! Their album ‘State of the Art’ was the biggest selling Australian Hip Hop album of all time holding the number one spot for two weeks and winning two ARIAs. Their new album ‘Drinking From the Sun’ was sitting at #1 two weeks from debut with the first single ‘I Love It’, featuring the amazing Sia, released to widespread acclaim and reaching double platinum status in no time flat.
Lana Del Ray Introduced to many of her fans through her DIY video for ‘Video Games’, few contemporary artists have generated as much hype as Lana Del Rey. Her darkly glamorous album ‘Born to Die’ debuted at #1 on iTunes in eighteen countries and attracted over a million in sales worldwide. A force of nature: Lana Del Rey.
Muscles His debut album Guns Babe Lemonade established cult status worldwide and turned this musician into an in-demand live music festival machine. His new album Manhood is a tour de force of ‘no holds barred’ electronic post-punk, euro-dance and Italo disco and is sure to burst your eardrums at Splendour. Get ready to get sweaty.
